San Diego, CA
I've been here twice. I love it here! Oh it's in the Vinh Hung supermarket, just fyi.
The first time I went, the lady at the cashier was super friendly. She's really sweet and nice. I told her it was my first time here and she helped me out a lot! She mentioned the lunch specials they have for the next time since it was past 5pm. [Lunch specials are from 11pm-5pm]
I got the BBQ Pork Lo Mein. Super good! Tons of flavor, saucy and greasy but good.
The second time, I decided to eat in. They have specials for dine-in only too! Nice! I got the steamed flounder for 6.95. It was super moist as it is a soft, white fleshed fish. The meat kept breaking apart so I had to be really gentle with it, hehe.
I also got the BBQ pork steamed bun from the dimsum menu. I haven't been to too many dimsum places so I can't say whether it's good or bad in comparison, but I really liked it. I don't remember the last time I had a steamed bun. Soft, fluffy bun with sweet red pork, yumm!
Since it's really close to where I live I just walk here, but parking seems a bit small. Definitely coming back! -

My recommendation: pork shumai
This chinese restaurant is a divided-off section of Vinh Hung market (off to the right as you come through the entrance)
Dim sum here was...OK. Prices were good but food was nothing to really write home about. I ordered the pork shumai, shrimp dumplings, pork-buns, and something else I don't really remember. Out of all of those, the pork shumai was the only stand-out dish.
This place is also super-asian...which I associate with poor service. So if you want anything, make sure to be aggressive about it and either flag down a server or get it yourself. -

Dim Sum Experience:
The dim sum isn't that bad, but isn't all that spectacular either. I've gone after the lunch crowd on a weekday and to my disappointment they were all out of the pork and shrimp shiu mai. (Hot sellers I guess.) I didn't have time to wait 20 minutes, so I had to pick something else. Generally speaking it's affordable, although $2.50 for 4 pcs of har gaw is on the pricy side. That's over $0.63 each plus tax!
The ladies behind the counter are very friendly!
Dinning Experience:
Just walk right in and plop yourself down at one of the many empty tables. The menu is quite extensive for such a small restaurant in a weird location. (There are Szechuan dishes on the menu, although they lack the real spicy KICK that I enjoy.) Portions are very generous and the food comes out hot and fast.
The past two times I've dinned they've given us sesame balls for dessert. That's right, no fortune cookies here!
Service is really lacking. There's only one waiter who has to take orders, bring the food out, and bus the tables! -

Num num num num nuuuuum!
My name is Andrea. I am addicted to dumplings.
So there we were, inside the Vinh Hung Supermarket, a converted theater, staring at a barbecued pig's head and whole barbecued smiling ducks in the place where popcorn and Goobers were once sold. A display that says "close to the food source" Three dumpling addicts...too lazy to drive down to Convoy, too hungry to search for parking on a Sunday morning at Pearl.
Enter Hong Kong BBQ and Dimsum. Char siu bao, shumai, ha gau, oh my!
No need to dress up. An unpretentious spot, our server was friendly and helpful with ordering. We were hungry so we ordered quite a few dim sum plates AND lunches, which in hindsight was a bit of a mistake. Still, the dumplings were fat...stuffed with all sorts of good things! Our lunches were still delicious, but we ended up taking most of them home. We'll be enjoying them for a few days.
Next time, maybe just dumplings and a hot pot, but we'll definitely return! -

I wasn't sure what to expect, I mean reading the reviews I knew it wasn't a standard dim sum place, but I wasn't sure how it was going to be. The service was poor as expected, and the food was decent. It seemed like it was all just heated up though as oppose to being made recently? quality was definately not up to par, but not bad if you've been deprived of dim sum. Fairly cheap as well. What i didn't like was the a lot of the meats in the dumplings and stuff were very fatty...I know dim sum usually isn't the healthiest but this just seemed particularly unhealthy

i come here for delicious snowpea leaves in garlic sweet sauce (when available), braised tofu w/mixed vegies, house fried rice. i like how its a hole in wall and never crowded. only reason 3stars is particular service waiter can be rude and neglectful service unless its Alex serving us. i've had to getup and get silverware or to-go container due to negligent service.
overall delicious food, never crowded, but service could be more humble and satisfactory. i guess that's the trade-off. -

LOVE this place that I have just recently discovered. It's located inside of Vinh Hung supermarket and though I go in here often, I have never eaten at Hong Kong BBQ & Dimsum before but since I've tried it, I'm hooked!
Instead of giving you the traditional water cups like everywhere else, they give you a nice, warm pot of tea which I love! The food here is good but I especially loooove the dim sum menu! Everything is extremely cheap. There's not as big a selection as a bigger restaurant like Jasmines but for this price, you seriously cannot beat it!
I love the shiu mai, the chicken feet, the egg tart,... nevermind, just give me everything! I have to say though, their shiu mai and chicken feet is FANTASTIC and it is one of the best I have had.
My friends and I adore this place and every time we leave here, we are always so full and satisfied! Plus, this place doesn't destroy our wallet either ;) -

This time I got the bbq pork lo mein and the bbq pork chow mein dry style. The flavor of the lo mein noodles were very good. This is probably my fav place in town for lo mein. The bbq pork was also very good but they didn't put that much in this dish.
The flavor of the chow mein dry style was great! These noodles are thinner like the pan fried noodles. The sauce they use combined with the spices give it a bit more kick but not too much kick. Also there was alot of bbq pork which was delicious.
The tea was pretty good and the dessert of sesame balls was very good.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

The building this restaurant is located in looks to be old movie theater, it still has the old marquee old front.
This time I got the seafood fried rice with XO sauce it was one of the better fried rice dishes I had.
The roast duck I had was cold just like the 1st time, this may be a health code violation, but after I warmed it up it was delicious.Listed in: Mira Mesa San Diego

Yes, the fan and the buddha are still there. In fact, a row of colorful child booster seats now adorn the stairs with it's red, ripped carpeting. And how could I have missed the standard red, Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling? Add the fake, vine swags on the wall the seperates the restaurant from the supermarket and you are all set for some seriously mismatched restaurant decor.
But seriously, I did not come here to redecorate. The food is GOOD. Still ordering the same old stuff ... salt baked pork chops, duck rice, hakao, pan fried seafood noodles (the house chow mein). I think we are regulars now because we got a complimentary egg pie dessert and a smile (!) from our server.
Interesting addition of birds flying INSIDE the restaurant though. I guess they are going for the aviary look now. Kept my little one entertained, that's for sure!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Palo Alto, CA
After a quick search on yelp, I decided to give this place a shot. Seemed like cheap, good dim sum. I threw the address into my GPS and off I went.
Upon reaching the location my GPS gave me, I was really confused. I saw a sign that said "DIM SUM" at the entrance of the mall-like parking, but I couldn't for the life of me find a dim sum restaurant.
After driving around the parking lot and passing a very empty and dilapidated vietnamese market, it finally dawned on me - the dim sum place was inside of the extremely-shady looking market.
Fortunately, I was determined to get my dim sum, so I ventured in with my girlfriend (who probably wasn't very impressed so far). Inside, I saw a tiny cafeteria-like counter where only a few of those steaming pots (which typically hold dim sum) were visible.
At this point, I started to panic. What if they didn't even have the barest necessities to be dim sum (ie ha gou, shu mai, etc)? I nervously went up to the counter to ask what they had.
At this point, things started to turn around. I asked if they had a few simple things in english, which the (old) lady smiled and said yes to. My girlfriend then took over and spoke to the old lady in cantonese, and the old lady's smile grew even bigger. We ordered bbq pork buns, ha gou (excuse my terrible englishification of the words), shu mai, turnip cake, and those sticky rice wraps.
The food was excellent. It could have been a little hotter (it was hot, but not quite hot enough), and the overall selection was slim. However, the dim sum quality was great, and it was dirt cheap. We ordered $15 worth, and had enough to take home for a microwave dinner.
It's definitely going to be my go-to place for dim sum from now on. -

This place is great! The cashier is such a sweet lady! Even though I haven't been here in awhile because of work, she still remembers me! She definately cares about her customers and has great customer service. The waiter's aren't bad, they just have a hard time understanding English, which I think is the main reason why people misunderstands them as being rude. The food is DELICIOUS. Yummy, yummy. The cripsy fried chicken is my FAV. Overall, I highly challenge you to try this place. It's a hole in the wall, and worth the try.

this place has got me thinking about changing the way i right reviews. You know how theres that debate that giving a "low" quality restaurant 5 stars isn't justified b/c its not really that good b/c only fine dining restaurants should get 5 stars. well, i think my new criteria will simply be that if i go to the same place more than once in one week, or even weekend in this case!!, its getting 5 stars!
Its simple chinese food with no frills. There's a couple waiters around that take your order as if you were sitting in there backyard. There's no formalness to the place, but they are plenty nice and helpful. Some food is leftovers from lunch and just gets microwaved (like the free sesame ball desserts you get at the end) but everything is deliciously tasty and the prices are good. Its simple, tasty, good priced food. 5 stars it is!

Orange County, CA
This is our go-to place for a cheap Sunday dim sum brunch. It doesn't have the biggest variety of offerings, nor is the quality top-notch (e.g., sometimes the dishes can come out lukewarm instead of hot), but all of the classic items are on the menu, and for the price, it can't be beat. They do an especially good job with egg custard tarts, fried sesame balls, and har gow.
We also love the sauteed Chinese broccoli with garlic. It is our go-to dish when we want to bring some greens into our diet. They also serve porridge/congee, which we like getting to go when we are sick and need some comfort food.
Service can be practically non-existent or very slow when they're busy with takeout orders at the counter, but I'm willing to overlook that to some extent when the food is yummy and a great value. -

This review is for dinner only ..
i LOVE this place! the food is REALLY GOOD and SUPER affordable! We paid $24 which included tip.. We ordered:
- pan fried noodles
- cashew chicken
- hot tea (i love their tea here too!)
- 1 bowl of rice
.. and received 1 red bean sesame ball/each when we got the bill. the service is a little slow.. but don't come here expecting 4 star service, the restaurant is in a grocery store for heavens sake. sorry, just saying!
it's good Chinese food and cheap! I haven't found many other good Chinese places, so don't judge this place by the outside, give it a try! I DEFINITELY want to try them for Dimsum, i hear its good and can get crowded.. -

San Diego, CA
Came here because bf and I wanted dim sum and we weren't familiar with the area. Spotted the extremely large sign for "dim sum" and in we went.
Food court-ish, inside a Vietnamese supermarket, however I was undeterred because I've had not-so-bad dim sum within another supermarket before. Place was much cleaner than expected and the tea was piping hot. Dim sum however... terrible. No chong fan, and har gao skin is super thick and semi-tasteless... we couldn't finish it. Siu mai looks creepy with yellow residue and the bbq pork rice platter had meh rice. The best item we had was the yolk custard bun which was warm, flavorful and crunchy on the outside.
Basically everything else was lukewarm which is really unacceptable considering we went there at ten in the morning. The waiter was friendly.
Can't stand lukewarm food so won't be coming back. -

Review on Dim Sum only
I was tempted to go higher with this review because it is a place that I frequent, but I just feel the dim sum quality is not high enough to do so. It's not prepared fresh, so while that makes the service very fast it also means your eating food that has been sitting out and stays heated by steam. That being said, the dim sum is good enough to be average, at least for San Diego standards, and the fact the prices are so low (most are $2, some are $3) this has quickly become my go to spot for Dim Sum.
Places like Jasmine and Emerald have better quality dim sum, but I spent twice as much when I go there for the same amount of food. For me, unless I'm going on a date or something, the difference in price is just not worth it. I live in Mira Mesa so this location is very convenient to me and I can usually be quite full after spending only $10.
Bottom line: If you like Dim Sum and don't need care too much about ambiance or presentation, this place will get the job done at a much cheaper price. This is a great place to get dim sum to go as well. -
Review from Mike L.
Easily the best Chinese food in Mira Mesa - though you would never guess by its location (inside a supermarket that resides inside what seems to be an old movie theater?). The service is bad, but somehow, service and food quality are negatively correlated with Chinese food - so I can't ding them for it.
My favorite dish is the pan fired noodles - yes, im a white-washed banana. stop hating. -

San Diego, CA
It's very good. It's well priced, and it's fast. There is little BS involved, the owner is sweet, and the location is within short walking distance to my place. It's my go-to chinese place when I'm near home. Slightly less awesome than Mandarin in Chula Vista, but with probably the best Orange chicken in San Diego, not to mention the superior quality bbq pork.
The Orange chicken is not heavily breaded with tempura or sweet donut batter, like all of the other places around SD, its sweet, but in a ginger and orange zest kind of way, it isn't full of dehydrated chilis, and it has a delicate sauce, albeit a bit heavy in the portion.
Excellent Americanized Chinese in Mira Mesa, not to be missed if you are craving the Chinese food we all grew up on in the late 80's and early 90's. Order the Chicken Chow fun dry style, they are heavy handed with the sauces/gravies here.
Get in there and grab some...the portions are very big, and definitely satisfying. -

This is a small Chinese restaurant inside a Vietnamese supermarket, Vinh Hung. They have an extensive list of Chinese food and dim sum. Their dim sum is okay. I usually go there for the salted and soy steamed chicken. Super moist and lots of flavor. Their stir fry noodles are also awesome. The price is very reasonable and portions are HUGE.

This place is part of a Vietnamese grocery store (Vinh Hung). It's not that much to look at, but the food is good. My friends and I come here and always get an order of duck and also the eggplant dish with rice. The flavors match perfectly and are ooh so satisfying! The seafood chow fun is good too and there's always enough food leftover to take home. BBQ pork is decent - tender and juicy. Got the fried tofu once and I wouldn't get it again. I'd also skip the dim sum - very bleh.
Just be a little patient - there's usually only 1 guy working there and he's the host, cashier, and waiter!Listed in: Mira Mesa dining

Wow.....inside a supermarket what can you really expect? I've had divey Chinese food before but this place was a real dud.

San Diego, CA
Geez, I absolutely LOVED this place when I was pregnant! Probably b/c I didn't really pay attention to what I was eating.. I just shut my eyes, opened my mouth, and stuffed it! (Keep it clean..)! I went there yesterday cause I happened to be thinking of it. It was raining and pouring and I thought some Hot & Sour Soup and Chow Fun and Dim Sum would hit the spot. It was ALMOST perfect. Can anyone tell me why they put Bean Sprouts in their Chow Fun? First they brought me what looked like Chow Fun, except it had BBQ Pork in it; I had asked for Fresh Pork so I sent it back. When it came back again, it had Fresh Pork in it, but also Bean Sprouts, and no Broccoli. Is it a different style? So I asked the server at the end how I need to order what it is that I wanted. He basically said just list what I want in my Chow Fun dish. OK. WILL DO.
I docked another star for the typical Chinese service. Reading his newspapers at the counter, and I had to go up to him for more Dim Sum and to pay the bill. (Which reminds me to throw away the extra newspapers and magazines at the restaurant I work at). -

Hong Kong BBQ and Dim Sum is another favorite of mine in San Diego. It's located inside Vinh Hung Market. The service is somewhat lacking... it may look a little run down... but if you look pass that... the food is pretty good.
You won't find much westernized Chinese food here, it's more of authentic Chinese food. For Dim Sum, they don't have wide varieties like some of the bigger Dim Sum restaurants in LA. But it's sufficient. I love their chicken feet there... it's so... soft... and meaty... yum! Sometimes the Dim Sum is not super hot and steamy... but it's ok.
For lunch and dinner, they have Hong Kong style Congee and Wonton Noodle soup. It's not perfect like the one in Hong Kong... but it will do. The Sea Food Chow Mein (two side crispy), Beef Chow Fun and Beef Brisket Noodle soup or rice is really good.
But the best of all... the price is reasonable.
Oh oh oh .... IMHO, they have the best Egg Tarts in San Diego, it's big, and the crust is flaky and crispy!!!!! Their Egg Tarts get sold out often! -

I came here because I called in search of a dim sum place and they said they were serving dim sum til 9p! I think I've always expected good quality dim sum since I've spent most of my life eating at dim sum restaurants in Oakland and SF chinatowns. The food was not hot or fresh, and I noticed a yellowy tinge to the siu mai and the gow choi dumpling. It felt like the fast food version of dim sum. I was hoping for the full dim sum experience D: The server was nice enough to put up with my half-chinese half-english sentences. Speedy service. I would go back to try the other items on the menu, but I probably would not get the dim sum again. Maybe it was just bad timing. Dim sum that isn't served during brunch hours should be questionable haha

Came here once again because my boyfriend and I were craving Peking duck and Singaporean noodles.
The service again was the same as my previous review. Everything is the same. So this review is all based on the food that we ordered.
The Peking Duck was FANTASTIC! We ordered the half duck and the portion was large for only $9.99! Enough for two meals!
The Singaporean noddles ($10) weren't as great. I was quite disappointed because everything we ordered here is normally very tasty. The onions were too sweet .. and it just didn't do justice on the taste buds. Singaporean noddle is one of my favorite dishes since I traveled to Singapore.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I try VERY hard to not eat dim sum in San Diego. I just try to save it until I go to LA; however, sometimes a brotha just wants his shaomai. This place does not change that, but for those of you in San Diego, I would recommend this place above all others.
The food is certainly not the best here. In fact, of the Dim Sum places in San Diego, Jasmine is my favorite (and I've tried all 3 of the "major" ones on Convoy). So why do I recommend this place above Jasmine? Because the value here is FAR superior to Jasmine. I spent here for 2 people about what I spent at Jasmine for myself, AND I had left overs here. No, their selection isn't great, but they have pretty much everything I'd order at Jasmine anyways. Maybe they're missing a dish or 2, but Jasmine's certainly not worth the premium you pay for it.
If you don't care much for value and just want the best Dim Sum, go to Jasmine. If you do care for value, this is your best bet (other than just saving it until you make a trip to LA).Listed in: SD Asian

This place is ok. Its located inside of a supermarket and they have roast duck and other Chinese bbq items.
When I lived in mira mesa and I was too lazy to drive down to Convoy, I would come here for take out, as it was pretty cheap and it was close.
I would not recommend shopping at the supermarket. Maybe for dry goods or canned products but the seafood section should be avoided at all cost. I almost called the Health Dept on them once. -

No cart ladies here. We came here after 3 pm on Sunday, well after dim sum hours but you can still get it. It's a little strange. You can order your dim sum at the glass counter and have the lady walk it to your table or you can get it to-go. Table side service is generally speedy. Their buns (football shaped) and har gow is good. I also like the pan fried vegetable cake (two big pieces)-if you like dim sum filling with lots of pork. My favorite is the egg custard tart-3 pieces. It's so good, I can eat two. What's the best part? It's cheap.
Caution: If you are anal, the fact that it's in the inside of a grocery store that used to be a movie theater may bother you. Don't look up! Wait, I said not to look up and you just did! Water spots all over the ceiling. What's up with that?
I haven't had dinner here so I will need to have that soon which may skew my ratings. -

I came here in search of a good chinese food take-out place in mira mesa. They having both dim sum and bbq as well is a nice plus. Their dim sum menu isn't very large, but if you're looking to get a quick fix this place is worth a try. The shu mai isn't too bad for $1.99 and the steamed spareribs were good. I've uploaded a picture of their dim sum menu. Next time I'll have to try their BBQ side of things.

What 5-star for a Chinese restaurant inside a supermarket. Yes, it's one of those hidden secret place nobody knows about. Even people who have lived in Mira Mesa all their never thought about eating at a place like this. However, we discovered it was a hidden gem. Love their food especially the fried tofu. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Add a little soy sauce and its delicious.

the three of us ordered in hoping to get our Chinese fix on. Ordered the roasted pork (which hangs beside the roasted ducks), fried squid, some shu mai, and salt baked pork chops.
Our waiter was some dragon ball Z lookin dude and gave good, friendly service. The pork was really good as was the pork chops. The squid was okay but tasted unusually funny.
Prices are fair here and its not a bad place to eat at. The selection of dishes was surprisingly low. I think i like Golden State 5 minutes away better however.
I think i will just come back here to order more of the roasted pork or duck to go. -

Pretty good. Just don't plan on dining in and expect amazing service. There's only one guy that handles it all and he tends to ignore you sometimes. Your best bet is to grab a menu or two and leave one in your car and another one at home. Why? You should phone in your order so you don't have to wait there, unless you're going to go shopping at the market it's connected to.
As for the food, the dim sum is okay. Tends to be a bit dry. The stewed chicken feet is good though. I've also ordered BBQ Pork Fried Rice and that was a bit on the dry side. I have also tried the XO Fried Rice or something like that and it's decently good, again a bit dry. The 1000-year old porridge hits the spot on a cold day though. If you eat there, it's a huge bowl. Their to-go for porridge is monstrous as well, so that's worth your money.
Now, I only go there to order their salt and pepper chicken wings. There's 12 of them and they are really good. Crispy and juicy and salty and peppery. With a side of medium white rice, I now have lunch and dinner. Maybe even breakfast. 12 wings for $6.95 is your best bet. And these aren't those dinky wings. Full of meat so you know you're getting your money's worth.
As for the other things, I have no idea. They offer combination plates at certain times (lunch, I think). Other than that, a fairly good place to grab some food and still have enough to share. -

Authentic Hong Kong cafe food - it has hot pot, porridge, rice, noodles and some small selection of dim sum, also you can get roasted duck or BBQ pork here as well. Similar to Sam Woo but no wait and close to Mira Mesa. It is actually inside of Vinh Hung Market. The "restaurant' didn't have much of deco so don't expect much. The service is typical hong kong style service which don't expect much neither. But the food is simple and authentic, at least close enough for me and my wife.
