Honfleur Home featuring Marimekko
4 reviews for Honfleur Home featuring Marimekko
I have been a huge fan of Marimekko for years so I was over the moon when they opened up this store in Silver Spring back in May. I sleep every night under their classic Unikko (big blue flowers) pattern comforter and I'm so glad they still stock the store with plenty of Unikko furnishings.
I came here today for their DIY bag event. For $55, you get to pick one of the hundred fabrics that they have from their classic prints to their contemporary prints. It was stressful to only be able to pick one when each and every one is so unique and pretty. I decided on the Turbulent Blue fabric from the 2007 line because it is a more modern take on their classic large flower patterns. It's bright aqua blue on dark olive green background.
Then you get to choose which type of bag you want to make - I chose the satchel (an over-the-shoulder hobo style bag). The other choices are a clutch with change purse and yoga mat bag. They cut you a few yards of fabric and lead you to a table with the design templates, chalk, scissors and pins. You trace the templates and then cut out the patterns. You place it all in a bag, hand it over to the sales person and call it a day. They take care of all the sewing. It takes a few days and you can pick it up in the store or pay an additional $6.95 to have it shipped.
This was fun to do once because of the novelty of picking out the fabric and style that is you and 'making' your own bag. However, their ready-made bags aren't that much more expensive and they're much better made. The DIY sample bags weren't well constructed and kinda flimsy because the bottoms and sides were not reinforced with any type of thick material. I believe some of their patterns are sold only as textiles so the only way (for someone who can't sew) to get a bag in those patterns is at this event. I can't wait until my bag is finished!
I was mildly put off by the confusion between the sales people of the whole flow of the process. I was being sent back and forth across the store and at certain points, they weren't sure what the next step was. I'm just surprised since this was their 2nd DIY event and I would have thought all the kinks would have been worked out then. Maybe by their 3rd event, they'll have a streamlined process in place.
They have events regularly and I'm looking forward to see what's next.
Great staff, great stores, great everything.
Too bad I missed the most recent Do It Yourself Handbag session. But I can't wait to go back for the next event!
There's free parking at the garage right around the corner!
Here's their blog, stay tune for upcoming event: http://marimekkodc.blo.../
i bought this very ornate black and white fabric (i forgot the name but the texture is very similar to canvas) and i must say its quite pricey for a yard but soo beautiful. alot of the fabrics are more on the home decorating side than commercial clothing wear. the store itself is white white white and shiny shiny shiny(its like mr clean blew up in the room), with high ceilings and wide open windows its very modern. what i dont get is all the random toys and other random things they have in there but hey whatever sells right? :p i havent been to any of their sewing events but ill try to catch one when i can cause i wanna make me a cute bag :P
simply gorgeous! was at the store's gala opening this evening and touched probably every item in it. streamlined white shelves and (i'm told) custom architect-designed clothing racks are the backdrop for a glorious mutiny of color -- dramatic, modern-retro, boisterous-refined color. you can't feel grey in a marimekko store.
you may recognize the brand's "big flower" print or one of the other iconic prints (crate+barrel sheet set, anyone?) they have trailblazed over the last 50 years. for the conservative, there are simple graphic stripes and dots, and adorable kids stuff; for the mod folks, which the opening definitely attracted (so... many... cute... dresses!) the graphics get waaay bolder and brighter. for your inner interior designer, the store sells fabric as well as plates, ceramics, linens, and decorative objects -- pretty much anything you could possibly screenprint on. (my friends hung a fabric panel as a kickass room divider in their apartment.) plus the website says they intend to continue hosting events, art receptions, readings, and classes for the local arts community, and they donate part of their profits to local arts organizations and scholarships...
granted one of their dresses runs about 40 percent of my paycheck -- so i got myself a cute mug and stuffed my face on hors d'ouvres. hooray! at least i can't get too fat for my mug.
5-star earners: the friendly staff, the awesome "kitan" dress, and the "closs" coat in red. yes, please!
