It's a whole new honey, child! After being totally turned off from this River North salon 2 years ago (stale stylists, steep prices), a tip from a friend prompted my recent visit. Call me impressed! My color and styling were fabulous and completed in less than 2 hours. Prices are far from bargain basement, but are in line with other similar salons.
"Round of applause" Eva (stylist), "bravo" Mari (colorist) and "hello" Honey Child, I'm back!
I started going to Honey Child for Hair Services after moving to Chicago in December. My stylist was friendly and professional and my hair looked amazing! Although pricey, I believe the end result was worth every penny. Hell, the shampoo alone was worth it! I'm so happy to find a salon in my new city!
I love Honey Child Salon and Spa!
I have been visiting this salon for 2 years and have always had a wonderful experience. The service I go for is a relaxer. Erica is my stylist and I will not go to anyone else in Chicago. She's friendly, personable and her services are quick. I never feel like I'm waiting around for an unreasonable time at any point that I'm there.I feel so relaxed and comfortable the whole time I'm there. Oh and my hair has never looked better!
Santha is the best bikini waxer ever. She also does awesome facials, very thorough. I would love to try their pedicures, but they are out of my price range. But Santha is just FANTASTIC!!!
I went to honey child for about a year, but sadly, i had to quit going. they dont treat their customers well. once i had an appointment mysteriously disappear from their books and they acted as though i had entirely made up the phone call with the receptionist. my stylist (who i wont name for kindness sake) was regularly late to all of my appoitnments and often left me waiting, for up to an hour sometimes! I am sorry, its not worth the wait or the price. the salon itself is pretty dingy, the music is constantly blaring, and the shampoo bowl is always dirty. not a salon atmoshpere at all. on the other hand, the wax/massage area is much more well kept and they really know what they are doing in that respect. still...better places in chicago for half the price, half the attitude and MUCH BETTER customer service.
I am so picky about my estheticians-- eyebrows can make or break your face, as far as I'm concerned...
so after years of awful salons with skin rips and misshapes, I was happy to find Santha at Honey Child!
I wouldn't trust anyone else...she spends at least 20 minutes on your brows, with magnifying head gear and the perfect arch.
It's a little pricey, around $25, but worth it to me.
oh and like most salons, you can't tip on the credit card, so come prepared with cash...I always feel bad when I'm sans tip, and come back later.

I have only been to Honey Child once and I was very fortunate to have Mia do my pedicure. I went to them after reading a review in Timeout or Chicago Magazine. The pedicure was WONDERFUL and Mia's hands were magical.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone!!!

I've been to Honey Child twice, and I am thinking about making a third trip back. I like the fact that it is an African American owned business, however, whenever I go I have to deal with some snotty receptionist at the front desk. It's never the same one, but to me if the receptionist is not "friendly" and that's the first person you see when you get there, it can kind of mess up the rest of the experience.
My first visit was for a citrus pedicure and manicure where they used fruits...it was great, they did an awesome job. My second visit, I was going to a spa party with several other people and some way they lost my reservation (just mine, no one else's) even after I had called to confirm. Since it was their fault, the offered me a 30 minute massage instead of the hour one that I had scheduled. It was still nice but I was a little upset that I had gone through all the trouble of verifying this appointment and it was still wrong!
If you have the money, I would recommend Honey Child. The services that I have had so far were good, I do like the ambiance in the spa area located downstairs. It was very relaxing.

I recently went for a Swedish massage before taking a big test and I have to say that I forgot how great it felt to be sooo relaxed!!! The atmosphere is calm and inviting. I felt very comfortable and at peace at Honey Child. I had some knots on my neck/upper back which Martha the massage therapist diligently worked on minimizing. One of the best parts was when a pair of heating pads were placed on my neck which was very soothing. The music was outstanding, so much so, that I couldn't help but wonder where I could get a copy of that cd. The smell of lavender (one of my favorite scents) which Martha used towards the end was the perfect touch to the end of a great massage. Contrary to some of the other reviews the receptionist was pretty friendly. My only regret was not booking a longer massage. I would definitely go back again.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Whether I go for a "corrective" facial or a Brazilian wax, I know I'll leave happy. Santha, I believe her name is, has always taken care of me. Last time I went for a facial, I ended up getting a free hand massage while waiting on something to warm up. Everything smells so good here!

I got a deep tissue massage here last night and it was amazing! They've got a really great relaxing atmosphere in this salon, everything is really clean, it smells great, the lights are dim, and the staff is quiet while you're getting your treatment. Their treatments are reasonably priced too, they've got package deals and gift certificates as well!

This place is always advertised on the news as one of the best spas in Chicago. You get the celeb treatment and great skin afterwards.

I got a gift certificate for a massage from Honey Child for Valentine's Day last year and because I can't really afford to get spa services on a regular basis, I waited for months to use it until just the right occasion. I ended up making an appointment for the day after I moved, thinking that I would probably be sore from all of the lifting and it would be a perfect opportunity to get a nice relaxing massage.
However, from the moment I walked in the door at this spa, I had a really disappointing experience. The receptionist who was working was very unfriendly and actually acted like I was intruding on whatever it was she was doing. I was then directed to wait on a bench in a dark hallway until my therapist came. No locker room, no robe, no offer of tea or water - nothing. When my therapist came to collect me, I was totally taken aback - he was a huge (6'5"ish and probably close to 300 lbs.) and looked more like a football player than someone who works in a spa. I guess it really shouldn't have mattered, especially since I hadn't requested a female (although when I made the appointment they didn't bother to ask me if I had a preference, which most spas do), but not only was this guy intimidating looking, he was also not very nice.
The massage itself was nothing short of horrible, although to be fair, I can't really blame this entirely on my therapist. I was really sore from moving the day before and the whole thing was exceptionally painful, I honestly just wanted it to be over, but it was definitely made worse by the fact that I just felt really freaked out by this giant who was working on me. I tried to chat with him a little bit to put myself more at ease, but he was totally unresponsive. It was made worse by the fact that when I turned over so that he could work on my chest and shoulders he didn't use any kind of eye pillow or cloth to cover my eyes (which I have usually had in the past), so that not only did I have the uncomfortable task of keeping my eyes shut while I could feel someone looking at me, but also the ceiling light was shining directly on my face. Add to this being in an an advanced state of undress and you get the idea of how unpleasant the whole situation was.
When the massage was over I had to change in the room and put my work clothes back on, despite the fact that my entire body was now covered in massage oil. When I went to check out I noticed that there was a small sign indicating that gratuities were accepted in cash only (which they also neglected to mention when I made the appointment), so despite the fact that I had an extra $15 left over on my gift certificate, I had to trudge down the street to an ATM to get cash. Even though I still have that $15 left, I don't know if I even want to go back to this place because it was so awful.
I should add to this review that I have worked as a spa coordinator in two different upscale spas in the past, so I have a fairly good idea of how the industry works. With Honey Child's prices, they should really be offering better service. I think that when you go to a spa, it should be about the whole experience. There should be a nice relaxing atmosphere designed to put clients at ease from start to finish. You should be greeted by someone pleasant at the front desk, you should be offered something to drink as soon as you come in, you should be able to relax in a designated area with a nice robe and slippers and the person performing your services should attempt to put you at ease. I experienced none of these things at Honey Child and although I am not particularly familiar with any of the other spas in the city, I can imagine that there must be a million better options in this price range.

Pretty good. A little snotty for my taste. I like a spa to be personable. I did have a massage and it was great. It is hard to find a place that is quite enough for a great massage...Honey Child is one of those places.
