DOG PARK! We've come here on sunny afternoons, and our 9-year-old pup has loved it every time. There's sun, there's shade, and lots of rocks, bushes, and trees to mark. The park provides poop bags, a trashcan, and a water pump and bowl for mid-romp drinks. There are always plenty of doggy friends of all sizes, and so far both owners and dogs have been super friendly. The big dog fenced area is the perfect size in that I can stand in the middle and easily keep an eye on my dog, no matter what corner he's sniffing.

I wish this dog park was a little bigger, but it has everything you need to let your four-legged baby off leash. There is a smaller section for smaller dogs, and a larger section for larger dogs. There's a nice bench in the shade and plenty of parking.

And ditto to what a previous reviewer said about google maps not giving the right address, because we ended up at the offices of CH Parks & Rec, who then gave us the proper directions to the aquatic/dog park. For once, Google failed me.

(7/6/10 UPDATE: Address/map issue corrected thanks to the CM!) IMPORTANT NOTE: I think both the google map address and the listed address don't jive. The map on Yelp shows this park as being at the intersection of  Dairyland and Homestead. THIS IS WRONG. This park and included dog park are located near the intersection of Homestead and MLK. So, just be aware if you're new to the area. Just ask for directions to the Homestead Aquatic Center since they share the same parking lot.

After a failed attempt at letting our dog socialize with Cary dogs....see my review of Godbold Park (http://www.yelp.com/bi... )...we decided to fall back to the safety of CH and their awesome community facilities - i.e., the Homestead Park's dog park section. As Adrienne E. said, this is the closest off-leash dog park for us. Else, we'd have to drive to Southern Community Park to go off-leash.

Personally, i love dog parks. Why? B/c you actually meet people from all walks of life with a common interest - dogs. They don't care what you do for a living, how much you make or what your wear. In fact, that idea holds true for dogs too. All they (dogs, not humans) want to do is sniff your butt and maybe lick your face. And that was our beef with Godbold. You had to be a member to use the facilities. Well, in contrast, CH parks don't require membership AFAIK. And unlike the Godbold dog park, there were no high security gates here requiring you to scan your badges for entrance into the dog park. Good thing, b/c that gate at Goldbold looked like it cost a fortune!

Rant aside, this dog park was full of dog owners and dogs on a slightly warm Saturday afternoon. No complaints since the whole reason to be here was to get some social time for our little dog. Like most dog parks and as Adrienne E. said, there are 2 areas - one for small dogs and pups and another for med/large breeds. No restrictions exist other than common sense and courtesy. No aggressive dogs, etc. It's all outlined on the sign outside the fenced-in area. Even tho our smaller dog could technically go to the small pen (by weight), there was no dog in that area. So we opted for the med/large breed area instead. Our little 13 lb dog held his own easily against larger breeds like a border collie mix and a lab. Overall, our little chi-wiener dog enjoyed his 1.5 hours there running, sniffing, frolicking and licking other dogs, people, the grass, etc. We showed up at 1:30 with 2 dogs already there. 30 minutes later, more came until we peaked at a total of 6 dogs. A good time was had by all including ourselves as we chatted w/ owners and petted other dogs.

The one bad thing about this particular park (and why they're not 5 stars) is that there is limited shade area. Not so bad today, but still at mid-afternoon, every dog owner was crowded up against the shady tree area in the far corner. Also, water and doggie bags (for you know what) are provided. Aside from the dog park, there are paved trails to the other area of the extensive park including a baseball field, basketball court and the relatively new aquatic center.

No membership fee is required here. So this makes a great spot for you and fido to socialize with other dogs and their owners. Besides, this is the kind of park that I want to be a member of - one that promotes a community based on interactions with people and their pets. Overall I found the pet owners here responsible and super nice always checking on their dogs and how they interacted with the other dogs. I felt very safe and secure even with our smaller dog amidst the larger breeds.

The dog park part is very nice. We have paid for a park in Durham for a few years then discovered this, it's free and much nicer that the other one. Very big. Small and large dog areas. Wooded area grassy area mulch area lots of bushes and slopes the dogs love to hide and play in.

Homestead Park is probably best known as the home of Chapel Hill's only dog park. It's a pretty nice set-up, with high fences (so nobody jumps out) and some shady areas. I love that the doggy play area is divided into two sections: one for medium/large dogs and the other for smaller breeds. In case you're unsure of where your dog should be, there are posted weight and height guidelines. There are no breed restrictions, but dogs in heat are not allowed and any dog that displays signs of aggression must be removed immediately. Outside the fenced area, dogs must be kept on a leash.

Even if you don't have a dog, Homestead Park has a ton of fun outdoor facilities. There's a skate park, a climbing wall, and baseball and soccer fields. They also have pretty and well-maintained walking/running trails surrounding the area. It's a great place to spend a sunny afternoon with your pet, kids, significant other, or just a couple of friends.
