5 reviews for Homer's Music & Gifts
The biggest loss that we have experienced with the trend towards large corporate music stores and away from independently owned operations is the expertise of employees who really like music. Homer's still has this, and that's why I shop there.
If you shop at Best Buy, Target, or god forbid, Wal-Mart (white trash - always), the people that work in the music department know less about music than anyone else on earth. It's almost like they give a music quiz to all new employees and those with the lowest scores end up in the music department.
Not the case with Homer's. Support local music and music stores who hire people who actually listen to music.
Homer's has one of the best record selections in any independent music store, and they're great at supporting the local scene with deals on albums and information about shows. My only beef is that the selection for these somewhat smaller stores pale in comparison to other independent record stores I've been to (Independent Records in Denver, CO and Amoeba Records in San Francisco, CA). Overall though, they're a good value and beat anything else in town for records - especially when the only other options are Best Buy and Target.
Sadly, I don't really by cds anymore. I just don't want them. It's a shitty format anyway. If I need my music in physical form, I will try to buy it on vinyl. So I guess I'm contributing to the problem of music stores going the way of the dinosaur. But I think and hope there will always be that one place to go in town to buy records, and hopefully it will be Homer's (and the Antiquarium).
I used to work here! I really miss it because it was a great place to work, very fun, and very loyal customers. People who come to this store know what they are looking for, and are willing to engage the staff (and other customers!) in conversation about all things music. Definitely a central meeting place for audiophiles. Great used section. They also buy used cds. I believe they also sell dvds now at great prices.
this particular homer's has my favorite used rock section....
