went for dinner on a monday night.  my meat was gooood.  the fries that came with the meat were hella good.  i said hella.  i'd prefer the spaghetti at emmy's but it was still decent.

and it wasn't crowded.  next time, i will try the mac and cheese.  love my carbs.

I had to drop a present off to a friend near Home today. When I arrived at her work, the door to her business was locked. I left two messages, and decided to head into Home.

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I walked into Home alone and ordered the mac and cheese. Just the mac and cheese.  The waitress pointed out a great looking special - but I just wanted the mac and cheese.

I mumbled something to the waitress about ordering dessert, but we both knew that I was just going to have the mac and cheese.

Right after I ordered it, and they were literally bringing it my table, my friend called and said that she was finishing something, but if I hurried, I would just catch her. I apologized profusely to the wait staff and said I would be right back. Confused they stared at me as I ran out. The mac and cheese ready in their hands.

After fifteen minutes I stumbled back into Home from the rain. I tried to explain in frantic Jessica talk,  that I was' back' to the new host, but she just smiled and said. "So.....are you ready  for it now?"

No questions asked. I sat back down to my glass of water and they brought out my side order of the mac and cheese.

The famed macaroni and cheese. Piping hot cheesiness, topped with breadcrumbs. All for me.

So....was it good? It was good. Very good, but I have to admit, it was no "this must be the manna from the skies" mac and cheese moment.  I had high expectations  for this beautiful cheese and pasta concoction.

But that being said I would not kick this mac and cheese out of bed. Nuh uh - this was definitely some quality stuff.

Once done, they cleared my one plate away promptly, and brought me my check with a genuine smile. I had no cash so I paid with credit card for a simple side order of mac and cheese.

I was by far no big spender at Home and I dashed out from my order, right as it came - but Home gave me nothing but good food and love.

And that's what good comfort food is all about. The love.

I'll take my mac and cheese with a side of real smiles any day.

After a prosperity seminar that went into the evening, a dinner out seemed like the thing to do.  Union Street was jumping last night, and a lot of bars and restaurants were full.  We spotted an empty table in the window at Home, and walked in to claim it.

I wasn't expecting a California menu, but there it was.  Margaret ordered an iceberg wedge and duck spring rolls, and I ordered clam linguine.

The iceberg wedge was much better than I expected.  What can I say about iceberg?  It was fun to play with, as I cut into it pieces came off in unexpected shapes.  The ranch dressing was light, and the bacon bits created an interesting accent.

The duck spring rolls were delicious, according to Margaret.  Too delicious to share.  She swears she forgot.

The linguine was nice and spicy, with chili instead of garlic.  That was a welcome change to the Bay Area cuisine I've seen too much.  The tomato sauce had a thick texture that reminded me of sun-dried tomatoes, even though they weren't.

Total tab for two, without drinks:  $40.

Sitting in the window watching all the party animals walking down the sidewalk gave me in interesting impression:  Everyone is beautiful on Union Street.

Bottom line:  Would I eat here again?  Yes.  I'm looking forward to it!

Cutie: "Just decide. I'm hungry! I told you I'd eat at Home!"
Me: "What? Is our date going that badly? Sh*t. I already got our tickets for the movie."
Cutie: "No, over there! Home! That place *dumbass*(subliminally)."
Me: "Oh, I never thought I'd be at Home on Union St."
Cutie: "You gonna stick with that one?"
Me: "Yeah, I'm good." (my snappy comeback-don't try)

I have a love/hate thing with Union St., mostly because its denizens don't seem to support unions at all. Irony.

We sat down at 6:00. By 6:07 we had our orders, piping hot on the table before us. The service was very warm and attentive, almost to a fault. Eh, who am I kidding? The place is called 'Home' and that's how they made us feel.

I had the nicest plate of Gnocchi Carbonara. The gnocchi was super fresh, soft and light with plenty of pancetta to compliment. Thoroughly enjoyable. Cutie played safe with the portabella/red pepper/goat cheese. Predictably good, and a light foccacia roll made it even better.

Cutie: "You gonna stick with that?"
Me: "Yeah, I'll eat at Home anytime you want."

****Review based only on their brunch****
Good, but not great.   At noon on a sunny Sunday afternoon, they had plenty of seats.  By 1pm, it started to fill up, but no wait unless you wanted their sidewalk seating.  Waiter recommended Wild Mushroom Scramble with goat cheese ($9), which was pretty good.  It came with breakfast potatoes which was so-so.  Disappointment was their fresh fruit salad, which wasn't fresh at all.

Service was friendly and competent.  The best seats are in their sunroom, which face Union Street.  Large sliding windows provide you with a breeze, if you like.

I need to come back here for dinner to make a more comprehensive review of this place.

My dad took me to hang out on Union St. this past weekend for my birthday, and we ended up having lunch here. The layout of the restaurant is so cool - I love all the windows and the little terrace they have. The service was excellent, but the food wasn't stellar. My dad ordered eggs benedict, which he was very happy with, but my brioche french toast came out completely soggy - totally undercooked. I sent it back, and they brought me another plate which was only slightly more cooked on only one side - the bottom was still soaked in raw egg. Maybe this is how people eat their french toast nowadays, but to me it was completely unappetizing. Other than this, I liked the place - if I'm in the area again, I would go back, but I wouldn't order this dish.

oh and the "breakfast breads" (which were just different kinds of pound cake) basket was so good! i would be happy to just eat this!

Home is fine as far as the food goes, but overall not a good choice for me.  I get bored too easily, and when I go out for a meal, I need that little something extra that keeps me wanting to come back for more.  Home is like decaf coffee and non-alcoholic beer.  The taste is there, but I need more kick.

We came here for a department holiday lunch, and it served that purpose just fine.  It works if you are trying to please people with very different palates.  The service was good and the food was consistent.  The mac & cheese was delicious and everyone was practically fighting over the last morsels.

You would be best served to stick to classic American comfort foods here.  Mez platter?  Not so much.  The burgers and salads are good  - I have had them at the Market Steet location.  My meatloaf was just OK, I actually expected it to be much better.  Bland bland bland.  Can you see my eyes glazing over?  The carrots were sweet and the mashed potatoes were creamy.

Just thinking about that carb overload makes me want to nap on the couch.  And there's nothing wrong with a good afternoon snooze with a full belly.  OK, that lunch was almost a week ago, but I can feel that nap coming on right now....

A friend of mine drove up from Palo Alto and upon departing the Peninsula told me, "I'm HUUUUUNNNNGGRRRYYYY!!"

This is not a sentiment I take lightly so I told him to call when he was near so I could be waiting outside. I also asked him what he was in the mood for, food-wise. He gave no hint, choosing instead to say he'd "eat anything." One of my biggest pet peeves is when somebody tells me that they'll "eat anything." I have a massive index of resources to draw upon and "anything" doesn't help to narrow things down whatsoever.

So, when people say they "have no preference" or "don't care" my mind interprets that to mean "Whatever makes you happy, dear Miriam!"

And on this night I thought of a few things that would make me happy so we headed from Nob Hill to Russian Hill. When, after 10 minutes of circling, we could not find parking I suggested we head for Union Street. As we commenced a new search for parking my friend remembered a meal he'd had at Home. Having never tried their Union Street location (but a big fan of Home on Market) I thought it was a good choice.

Miraculously we secured parking and breezed right in and were seated immediately. We skipped appetizers in favor of sides of Brussels sprouts, macaroni and cheese and corn bread. All were good but the corn bread was fantastic. I am not a huge fan of corn bread but this stuff was like cake and slathered in butter it was like a dream come true!

For dinner I had the pot roast, three-fourths of which I ended up taking home (too full from corn bread maybe?)

The pot roast passed my ultimate test and served as a delicious breakfast the next day.

Home on Market will always be my top choice, but if you're near Union Street this location is a good choice and the space is significantly quieter and better laid out than the original.

Delicious home-like yummy food! Think portobello mushroom sandwiches, meatloaf, and ravioli.

Great sidewalk tables with heat-lamps that come in handy on freezing SF nights!

Nice waiters, serve 209 gin, and they make the perfect "cheesy-gooey" mac and cheese. "Cheesy gooey" is a highly specific adjective used to describe a very specific kind of food. You guessed it - it's the cheesy gooey kind!

I hear this place is quite different from its Castro fraternal twin.  The menu is a little more creative, the service is friendlier, and the place is supposedly in general cleaner.  But what do I know - I still haven't been to the one in the Castro.

But I love Home on Union.  Perfect for people watching, there's a nice area to sit both inside and on the sidewalk so that you still have a great view of passers by on the street.  We went on Saturday before Halloween.  Saw some fantastic Kiss costumes, more than I can count random slutty Marina girl costumes, and a collection of too-cool-for-Halloween non-spirited people.  Boo on them.

I get the mac n' cheese every time - indulgently cheesy.  And the roast chicken - juicy and big - you can share.

And I just learned this, but brocolli rabbe is not broccoli at all.  Fancy that.

    1) 2 for 1 drink specials NICE!!!
    2) Mac and Cheese that might actually be Heaven
    3) did I mention 2 for 1 drink specials?

Stopped here with my friends after a day at the Observatory, and enjoyed the 2 for 1 drink specials, mac and cheese, and great wait staff! I have been to the Castro location as well, but the Russian Hill location had a better "fun" feel to it... maybe that was after the 4th drink, but that's how I remember the night starting.

Food is great and very much "Home"- coming here when you're home sick is perfect! Meat loaf, baked potatoes, mac n cheese, all stuff Mom would cook for you.

And 2 for 1 drink specials.

*update 1/2/2007*  I finally had the Home burger and was a bit disappointed, especially considering the $12 price tag.  The meat lacked flavor and was cooked through even though I ordered it medium rare.  I doubt I would order it again with so many other great burger options in the neighborhood.  2 stars for the burger.

A couple of my close friends love Home (as in eat there once a week)  Me?  Not so much.  Pretty pricey for comfort food and good luck finding anything remotely healthy on the menu.  Service has always been fine but I feel no really reason to return unless someone drags me there.

I just got home from a wonderful dinner at Home on Union Street.   Our group of girls had reservations, but there were plenty of tables open on a Wednesday night, I'm sure we would have been seated had we just walked in.

Excellent creative cocktails, wines were good too!  We split the Sloppy Joe dip and the Mediterranean Platter as appetizers.  Both were served quickly and devoured within minutes.  The sloppy joe dip was served with tortilla chips that tasted "home"made, and the dip was delicious.  The Med. platter had warm pita slices, hummus, and a cucumber yogurt dip with some olives, and while it was great, it was too small a seving in my opinion.  Well, it would have been too much had I ordered it for myself, but for sharing as a group it wasn't quite enough.

We wanted to save room for dessert, so we skipped the entrees and had salads for our main course.  The beet salad and the mixed greens were our choices, both of which were delicious!  We also tried a Margarita Pizza, which had a thin crust with a small amount of tomato sauce, mozzarella slices and slices of tomato and basil.

For dessert we split the dessert Trio, where you can pick any three desserts for $18 (I think, I'd had a couple drinks at this point).  Our choices were the Black and White souffle cake with cookies and cream ice cream, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and the Banana Bread Pudding.  In a word - amazing!

While I was there I checked out the Brunch menu, and I will definitely try to convince my boyfriend to take me there this weekend, because it looked terrific!

Update:  I have now been for brunch, and I though it was delicious.  My boyfriend complained that the portions weren't large enough, but for the normal-sized appetite it was plenty of food.  We split the fruit salad, then had an order of the Mac and Cheese (which was good but is better at Acme Chophouse) and some sort of Greek Scramble which was really good.  I'll be back, but probably with some girlfriends next time!

Home is a solid place to eat when you don't want to bother with a wait and need something good in your belly.  Love the glass veranda in the front equally for a sunny or a rainy day.

I personally love the breakfast croissant: Home has fantastic bacon, plus the cheese and butter soak into the croissant so that it stays on the delicious side of greasy.  Home's burgers are good as well, and they are open reasonably late for dinner, so that you can get your late night snack fix coupled with a tangerine mojito.

The nightly specials end up usually being pretty tasty, especially the Sunday night tri-tip with bacon-y beans.  I wasn't overly thrilled with the fried chicken breast...while the meat itself was tender and most, it lacked that crunchy shell and there was an oddly overpowering herb taste to the cornflake crust (I think it was thyme, which I usually love, but there was simply too much of it).

As far as the service is concerned, I've never had a bad experience at home...nothing outstanding, but certainly nothing to make me loathe it, either.  As a general rule everybody is friendly and  accomodating.

I had been to this spot on New Year's Day 2005 when it was a fancy french restaurant.  I love this location's sun room and general feeling of airiness.  I am glad Home is here.  With that said, however, I am not totally sold on the food.

I had to try the mac and cheese since I have heard some people rave about it.  I was not impressed.  It was bland and a bit oily.  Cheese seemed to be a secondary feature.  The crumbs were the best part.

I also tried the field greens salad with feta and cranberries.  The berries were so fresh and plump!  The feta was also very tasty.  The  grilled portabella sandwich was super good and the goat cheese was the perfect touch!   Basically..they did the cheese right with everything but the mac and cheese.

The service was also pretty poor.  Perhaps poor is too strong of a word.  But "nothing to write home about" is exactly on target.

I kind of wish I could give it 2.5 stars.

I just went there this past Sunday and I have to say this is the Worst service I have ever had in the city.  I am not one to complain about restaurant service but here are the things that happened:

    1. Waited 20 minutes for the waiter to come over and take our first drink order
    2. We asked for some bread and after 15 minutes we finally just got up and and found a busboy to get us some bread.
    3.  We then asked for a really major thing like Butter and that never came.
    4. My friend ordered soup and guess what, there was no spoon and no waiter to be found.  Once again got up and went to the bar to get one ourselves.
    5. Bill showed up right on time, shocker.

I will give them credit that the food like the Mac and Cheese, Burgers and Salads I have tried are good, but I seriously will walk out of there if I have that same waiter.

Home on Union st. is like a Marina Chick. This place entices you with
its dolled up facade but once you get to know it all it does is blow.

I sat down to brunch on a sunny warm day, one of those windless days which make San Francisco the best place to live in the Country for the moment. I was able to score a parking spot a block away and got the sole remaining empty table on the sidewalk right in the sun-- perfect for Union St. people watching and working on that tan. Mystic is for posers.

A few minutes after we sat down the Hollywood like perfection of the morning ended and my experience at Home was a bit more Van Nuys (the chick with the see through white skirt sitting next to us added to this analogy). Service was super slow-- they had about 15 bus boys topping your water off every time you took a sip (like at any Chinese Restaurant on the East Coast) but no one you could actually order anything from. In fact I felt like I was at home; I walked in to the bar a few times to get my drinks.  The Steak and Eggs was good but cooked way over order and not quite $15 quality.

While the service sucked on this particular day I would probably go back on another super sunny day and give it another try. Listening to Buffy at the table to your right describe her prior night out with a high pitched "Oh my God...and then" every other sentence and Landon at the table to your left "Dude that chick was so hot...bro you're so cool I can't believe you got her number".....has some entertainment value....maybe twice a year.

UPDATE:  They appear to be closed now... with a new name above the place... (6-12-2007)

We stopped by here before walking to see the Queen Mary 2 go under the GG Bridge for the first time.  That was amazing, by the way, and I have never seen so many people on the beach.

Anyway, I had a tasty burger and delicious french fries... the skinny, crunchy salty kind, you know?  Oh and I had a Mandarin Lime Cooler - you must try that on a warm day.  This day was like summer.  Hello, global warming!

They also have a lovely atrium-like patio - perfect for feeling a nice breeze but avoiding direct sunlight.

The french toast also looked amazing, coated in crushed corn flakes!

I am often wary of these all-around American food places, but I must say I was pleasently surprised.

Much to my surprise, they have this lychee drink there.  Lychee juice mixed with sake and lemon juice.  It was GOOOOOOOOOOOD.

The french fries arn't very good.  It tastes like Burger King fries.  What I mean by that is, it tastes more oily then anything else.  Not potatoey or salty.

You probably walked in here not expecting much.  So, what was surprinsly good was mac and cheese (buttered bread crumbs on top) and ceaser salad.

They also have happy hour every day.  2 for 1 at the bar from 5 to 7pm.

Okay, so I went to the one in the Castro, but couldn't find the place listed here.  I'm going to assume that this is one and the same.

Without a hint of irony, since the night I went it was definitely Upscale Gay Female night (It was like I was dropped into a site location for the L word), but I had the best damn tuna casserole EVAH.  Seriously.  And I don't even like the stuff that much.

I love this location so much more than the Market Street spot. I've been here three times now for different occassions and each time was perfect. They are great with large birthday parties (even with an infant), walk-ins, and eat-at-the-bar types. The fish is good, but if you eat red meat, the steak and frittes rock. Their real specialty is comfort food--meatloaf, lamb shank, and mac and cheese.

Great and changing wine list and fun cocktails (try the Homegirl and/or the Cucumber Cosmo).

    Very friendly service ...

Had a fun for the girls with our moms and my cousin.  Moms had a warm latte, while my cousin and I had a nice bottle of red.  For dessert we succumbed to the moist chocolate cake, hmmmm, to die for.

The waitress, busboys, bartenders and all the rest were wonderful!  We had a nice cozy fun evening.  To note, the ambience was quite, hmm, too red?  too dark?  nothing striking ... crowd gradually vanished as the evening transitioned from dinner to Friday night bar hopping.

Fantastic brunch place.  Lots of sun, outdoor/indoor seating with modern and racy decor.  Cloth napkins and designer stoneware complete the experience.

Never had dinner here yet, but the breakfast and lunch items are quite tasty.  Moreso on the fancy side, the items are delicately put together.  The smoked salmon eggs benedict is off the chain.  Crispy muffin, fresh eggs, savory salmon, and great tangy hollandaise to top off.  Large and in charge too.

My personal favorite is the Brioche French Toast, with cinnamon apple compote, whipped cream and strawberries.  Just imagine an inverted french toast with very light syrup with a crunch.  Very interesting textures and quite tasty.  (I always ask for more syzzzzurp.)

The fruit bowl side isn't anything eclectic, but it's a great way to end the meal.

On another trip, I had the Denver scramble, that was anything short of small.  Definitely was piled 'mile high' with good eats.  I've actually ordered the granola before.  Don't ask why.  But it is good topped with fresh seasonal fruit.

I have heard the morning drinks are stellar (bloody mary/mimosas) and by the look of the mini-bar (with plasma TV), I would imagine they use top shelf liquor.

Dorothy Gale said it best.  ;)  "There's no place like..."

Honest to good hearty food that warms your stomach.  The pot roast I ordered could have been a bit moister (I blame the lack of fat), but the mashed potatoes swimming in a moat of gravy made up for that.  The definite winner of the plate was the gravy... beefy and salty.  Now the horse radish was a lil weak... I like a good sinus clearing heat.

We followed our tummy-rubbin' meal with the Black & White Molten Chocolate Cake, a fairly standard dessert staple in most restaurants.  But it came with a different twist -- cookies n cream ice cream and a white chocolate marble swirl in the ooey gooey center.  Wow!  Really divine!  Perfect crunchy crust too.  A must for the sweet teethers.

I'm definitely coming back to try their mac n cheese... and possibly get a good seat under their short atrium.

This is an FYI of the imminent opening of the Union Street location of the popular Home Restaurant of Market Street. SF Chronicle, Zagat, SF Station, SF Weekly, and San Francisco Magazine all sing praise of this inexpensive, comfort food eatery. The opening of this new location should be promising. The drink prices and wine list are very reasonable and the food is well, comforting. I will review Home of Union Street after the opening night on the 16th of June. I just wanted everyone to know that Home is now closer, for some, than you think.

I very much loved this restaurant. The Mac n Cheese with the yummy baked bread crumbs on top was delicious!! I mean, it really makes it even more a comfort food than you ever thought Mac n Cheese could be. The happy hour 2 for one drinks was also a highlight. My friends and I aren't huge drinkers but we do enjoy the occassional drinking night and this was a perfect end to a day walking around San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts (is that what it's called? where EVERYone seems to be getting married)
Definately try this place out if you want a home-y feel and aren't necessarily looking for a low-cal meal, although I'm sure you could find something. My fish and vegetables was very good!

I've always been a fan of Home Restaurant in the Castro, and this place is pretty much the same save the location.  Great American comfort food, great drinks, and nice lively and loud atmosphere.  The mac and cheese is the perfect gourmet gooey kind, and the pot roast is so tender.  They have a few vegetable-only dishes so vegetarians have options as well.

We called late on a Friday night, and they were able to seat our party of 8 within the half-hour.  Our server was slightly rude to a person in our party (they forgot his beer repeatedly, they served his tequila wrong, she was not cordial or understanding when he was not satisfied with his portabello mushroom sandwich) but considering that we were a large and loud group, it wasn't a big deal.

Yummy... Home is my all time favorite spot for comfort food and bread pudding! I usually have dinner here, but I came here for lunch this week for my work's holiday lunch. Since we were a pretty large group, we were able to try a bunch of appetizers. The mac n' cheese was delicious!! Cheesy and crispy on top from the bread crumbs. I also really liked the corn bread. It was warm, moist and filled with corn bits. The Mediterranean platter was ok... nothing special.

For my entree, I couldn't decide between the nicoise salad and the Asian chicken sandwich, so luckily me and my co-worker decided to share. The nicoise salad was huge! Filled with seared tuna, avocado, green beans, potatoes and egg. The chicken sandwich was really unique. The chicken breast was sandwiched with spicy peanut sauce and "cold slaw." It was really good! It also came with a side of fries. Yum!!!

I love this restaurant. My friends and I were recommended this restaurant by this girl at the Tejava Tea Place and I should hug her!

The Cucumber Martini was deliscious and the pork chops were a def highlight!

I just started an internship with an architecture firm this fall and I had my first free lunch at Home with a principal architect and his associate.  Talk about nerve-racking!  But Home made me feel at home.  DING DING! I answered the million dollar question.  Why yes! It is supposed to do that.

My superiors (altho, I really wouldn't call them my superiors) did the usual look around and critiqued the setting.  They loved the little dining with direct views of the sidewalk and yadda yadda.  It was nice booth sitting and nice light coming in above with the skylights.

The diners leaving suggested Mac and Cheese and the Tuna Melt.  We were about to order cornbread and honey, but the server told us we get a free complimentary one and to ask her if we wanted more. SUH-WEET.  And by golly, that was the best cornbread ever!! I'd so come back just for the cornbread and honey.

Our food was brought to us pretty quick.  I was very impressed, but then again the diner was half empty or half full, depending on how you wanna look at it.  The Tuna Melt was eh... I am biased about tuna sandwiches, because I have had the ultimate tuna sandwich (see other review for Ruddell's) but the fries were great (kinda like BK Lounge fries, but served on a plate!)  The others had a burger and mac and cheese, also equally great.  *suggest getting burger medium-rare, doi!

Anywho, with the reviews about dinner being great., I'd come back here again.  Oh and price-wise, I dunno.  They paid for me.  Extra-sweet.

I'm a big fan of this place, but I was dissapointed that they ended their "buy 5 entrees get 1 free" promotion.

They have this amazing "jewish dream" or that's atleast what I call it.  It's a big potato latke with sour cream spread on it (like sauce on pizza) with lox layered on top, capers and diced red onions - TO DIE FOR.

I've gone 3 times, I also liked their mediteranean plate, if you're looking for something small.  Service is good, but the food is pricey.  The spaghetti squash didn't convince me that I liked squash, just a note.

I love cheese. I love bread and things involving butter. I'm not allowed to eat these things often, and rarely for dinner. So I've only been to Home at night a couple of times. Drinks- decent. Mac and Cheese- a dish of cheesy fatty goodness. Mmmm.
I am allowed to make poor food choices on weekends at brunch. First off. Breakfast breads. Very good. We've talked a lot about just coming in for the bread and a coffee sometime during the week, but it has yet to happen.
As for the real food. The eggs Florentine- good. Though it was room temperature when it arrived. A better choice is the mushroom and goat cheese omelet. If you're really hurting from the night before, though, I'd go for the egg and cheese croissant. I get mine with no bacon (they put pig in that I think) sub avocado. Good stuff. Get a napkin.

    I'd give it a 3.5

The restaurant is actually a lot bigger than it seems, but it has a cozy feel to it.  On a rainy night, we went to get some comfort food and ordered a side of the Mac and Cheese and special of the night: Pork Chili with Guacamole.  The mac and cheese was very good...but i don't think it's worth the trip alone.  The chili was very good also, we asked for extra spicy and it wasn't a thick chili, more like a light mixture of pulled pork and lots of beans.  I think it's a little overpriced...the mac and cheese side is $6 (kind of small) and the chili was $14.  Service was good but I did not think there was much to choose from on the menu...at least nothing that I couldn't make myself at home.

Delicious and affordable food!  Home always delivers on their comfort food - I'm a HUGE fan of their corn bread (corn kernals, moist, and cake-like), their pork chop (plump, juicy, served with yummy applesauce), and their desserts!  The bread pudding is killer and their molten chocolate cake is served with homemade cookies and cream ice cream.  What's better than homemade ice cream?

I definitely recommend making reservations and expect to get a drink at the bar for parties of 4 or more, especially on weekends.

    UPDATE 6/7/07:
I was just there last night so I think they're still open through this weekend.  Mac & cheese was as good as it was when I first had it.  Yay!  So now I'm sad that Home is closing.  It will reopen in about a month as Palmetto.  The owners have decided to go upscale. We saw a sampling of their new menu items and nothing inspired me!  Give me comfort food anyday...

    -------------------------------------------------- -------------------
Had dinner here tonight and it was as though the kitchen misplaced their saltshakers, tastebuds, whatever.  The entrees here are usually lackluster but they seemed even more so tonight.  Even my beloved macaroni and cheese was a disappointment!  About a year ago, I worked in the same building as Home and constantly ordered the addictive, yet heavy, macaroni and cheese for lunch.  Hence, the enlarged waistline.  But I digress...  Mama needs her macaroni and cheese back!

I will return to Home someday soon and I hope whatever's happened in the kitchen has been fixed by then.  Other items of note: the cornbread with honey butter and the banana bread pudding in a yummy bourbon sauce.  The 2-for-1 happy hour before 7pm (in the bar) is also worth mentioning.

***update: I hear they are closing after the Union Street Festival and will reopen a week later as something else.

    -----------

Home sweet home, this is not. How disappointed I am to still not like this place, despite giving it several chances. I'd heard so much about its sister restaurant. :( The mimosa's are tasty, but really, how can you get those wrong? Other than that, the brunch is nothing to rave about. My mushroom and goat cheese scramble wasn't to die for... something was definitely missing in the flavor department. The sweet breads you can order for $4 weren't really worth it, either. (Think thin slices of pound cake.) Plus they took forever to arrive and practically came out with the meal, as opposed to beforehand. Now I will say I had dinner here when it first opened and the menu/food seemed much better. But for brunch it just doesn't compete.

Home fits perfectly in the Marina. Carries the Marina attitude, people, and disappointments. I almost felt awkward and out of place eating here today. The food is hit and miss. I suggest eating there for brunch, NOT dinner.

My siblings and I went here for bunch today. We got seated pretty quickly. The waitress took our order, which was only orange juice, but did not come back till 15 min later. We ordered some food, which came out pretty quick. The food is spectacular. The French toast was amazing! It was so fluffy, so sweet. The banana pecan pancakes were to die for. Everything tasted great. So we were done, the bussers took our dishes quickly and boxed what we had left. We waited another 15 min for our waitress to bring our check. She brought the check and we plopped down our money. She brought back our change, but it was wrong. She gave us less than what was owed. Good thing my sister noticed (we gave them $100).

Summary: Brunch food was amazing. Service was horrible. If you want slow service with  a dull waitress, come here.

I've had dinner here. Not that great. If its home cooking, shouldn't it taste good? Not like dog food?

I found this place completely hokey.

I just don't get it. Back in the South (I'm from Atlanta), places like this (called "meat and threes" because you get a big plate of comfort food: a meat and three sides) are a dime a dozen.

    And cheaper.

    And better.

But most importantly, they don't have this fake ass contemporary-spin-on-comfort-food-just-like-your-m oms-but-better trip. Isn't that what Applebee's and Friday's and Shenanigan's and Schleppy's (or whatever those places are called!) try to do?

Don't be fooled: Just because this is in San Francisco and it looks cool, it's no damn different. Home just has less phony Americana on the walls, and It's just easier to talk your friends into going with you.

Love this place.  Its nice on the eyes, the food is kind to the stomach, but the bathrooms are designed to trick you!  (If you use both in the night - they are unisex - you will undoubtedly confuse the cold/hot water taps - since they are on opposite sides in each bathroom)

The Iceberg wedge w/ bleu cheese dressing is fantastic!
