Well, I didn't follow my own advice and went back to the home depot in Watertown this morning.Again people, this store is the PITS!! Today I needed to rent a floor buffer.although the price was right, the service was again horrendous. I was behind this man who was renting a hammer drill. The sales person was explaining how to use the machine and change bits. Both the customer and the sales person had no clue.I got sick of waiting and explained to both how to use this machine. You would think I would at least get a thank you.Instead when I got the machine I was renting home , the thing was missing parts!Back again I went. They wouldn't even give me a break off the rental for the aggravation. The only reason I go to that store is because it is close to my house. From now on, I'll spend the extra $ on gas and go to WestRoxbury. If I were you, do the same.

i've had very good experiences here. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the whole Rent-a-Van situation. We were going to rent a van and I didn't realize that it was a first-come-first-serve sorta thing. So i came by to rent the thing because we were picking up a washer and dryer, and even though they had a van in the parking lot, they were all used up. I asked, well, what about the van in the parking lot, the service dude said that the Home Depot workers needed it. WTF? It's the Home Depot for Pete's sake, wouldn't they have trucks/vans specifically set aside for Home Depot usage?

Anyhoo, the other day i went in to buy some wood. Ok, even though I am really into cars, video games.....i am very girly girl when it comes to making anything or fixing anything. I was dumbfounded when I found the wood. i had a shopping cart and found a piece of wood that was about 2 stories high. For an entire aisle, i was carting around this piece of wood until a Home Depotan was nice enough to cut it for me.

I couldn't find anything I needed in here without help. Maybe I was just being pathetic, and my friend who loves DIY stuff loves this place because he walks around and gets excited by this and that, but I just feel like an overwhelmed bunny in the headlights and want to run home.

I did manage to buy a white-painted wooden side-cubby for my bedside table here for a very low price (and put it together horribly badly myself - Ikea is more up my alley with instructions and DIY I think), and they have some really great wooden hangers here for cheap so I love that. My friend bought a $100 AC here once that served her well in hot summer months.

But otherwise: it's really hard to find anything in here. It's also a bit hard to get someone's attention to help you. Checkout is slow and makes me a bit sad. I'll only go here if I really need to, but never just for fun. And I'm getting sick of those tv ads for them too: "You can do it, we can help." No I can't and no you can't!

What about "can I please have a quart of this in eggshell finish" makes one think "I bet what this girl really wants is to listen to me prattle on about boring presidential debates for five minutes?". This was my experience at Home Depot. While tethered to the Paint Center counter as I awaited my paint's removal from the shakeamajigathingy, I had to listen to this guy talk about how Hilary is going to trounce Barack if they have another debate. Fighting flashback of my days as a Political Theory major (what was I thinking), my eyes glaze over as Kristen F. and I emphatically nod our heads and say "yeah uh huh" intermittently.

On the plus side, one guy was very helpful in helping us locate the wallpaper remover. (Aisle, side, brand name). Checking out was quick, the debit/credit machine works FAST!

If it weren't for Chatty McChatterson, we would have been in and out in a snap. But I can't let one bad apple spoil the bunch.

Your typical Home Depot.  It's impossible to find anything.  Seriously why don't they put a kiosk at the entrance so you can enter in what you're looking for and it will tell where it's located?  It takes forever to find someone if you need help.  It takes forever to find someone to help you because they're understaffed.  The odds of finding a friendly employee are no better than 50-50.  Quite frankly this places borders on sucking completely.  All of this for someplace that I should like...

I went in two summers ago with a simple question: do you have cedar boards in stock (with which to build garden beds).  It took 30 minutes to find someone who could answer this question (answer = no).  I asked if he could recommend anything else, and he suggested deck stock. I'd heard that you're not supposed to use that for gardens containing edible plants because it can leach arsenic and other bad stuff into the soil.  I asked him if this was the case. He began to read the manufacturer's label--or at least to stare at it. After a minute or two I asked if I could look at it, and one of the first things it said was don't use it for garden boxes with edible plants.

I ended up getting cedar from Arlington Coal and Lumber--they're great.

In general I hate Home Depot.  Service can be nonexistant, and many of the brands they carry are inferior.  That said it's sometimes a necessary evil, so they get a second star.

Your typical warehouse department store. I was impressed that when my roommate and I asked one of the salespeople where wallpaper remover was, he knew what aisle, which side, and what the product is called right off the top of his head. It didn't take long to get our paint either but while it was mixing the employee decided to start talking politics with us. Luckily, her and I couldn't care less but come on!! When I go shopping for home do-it-yourself stuff I want to be in and out and not feel pressured to engage in any type of debate on the presidential debates. I've never said "yeah, uh huh" so many times before.

I want an orange apron!

Okay, the key to Home Depot is to speak very slowly and in very simple, no-more-than two syllable words. Also, it helps to have a clue about construction and general handyman-ship, and you'll survive without having to really interact with the clowns who work here.

This Home Depot is always empty whenever we go, and it has a perpetual sawdust smell, which remind me of barn raisings and square dances... Well, if I lived in prairie times, it would.

After working for a general contractor for three+ years, I've learned to use and abuse Home Depot. For starters, never take one of their "How To" workshops: These are run by professionals who give you just enough instruction to make you feel empowered, but they secretly hope and wait for you to totally eff up you bathroom so you're forced to call them, and they get a remodel job since you suck. Don't do it folks. This is what books are for... And a book isn't a scheming middle aged man desperate for work in a slowing economy.

Find the instructions / professional advice online before you go. Make a list, check it twice before you leave, and be sure to hang on to your receipt. Oh, don't try to joke with the cashiers. They're bludgeoned with questions all day long, so by the time you get to the register, their souls are gone and they just want the day to end. We walked up as the guy was doing a cash deposit into one of those little banker tubes behind his register. We watched him count about $1000 worth of bills, put them in the cylindrical container, and press a button.

Me: Do you ever put stuff other than money up there?
Him: Huh?
Me: Like a stapler? Do you ever put a stapler up the tube?
Him: No. You'll get fired.

(That made us feel like someone's tried it before.)

If you desire the hardware-store equivalent to a mall walk -- you know, get the heart rate up -- this is your place.

If, on the other hand, you require a specific hardware-store item, stay far, far away. After speaking to **nine** different employees, who sent us to **five** different places in search of reflective tape, we walked out empty handed. The last person we spoke to said: "tapes and adhesives"
Us: "tried it"
Him: "plumbing"
Us: "been there"
Him: "the end of aisle 28?"
Us: "nope"
Him: "hmm....well I guess we're out."

Hmmm...I guess so. And so am I -- out of the Home Depot customer base....never again. From now on I'll only be visiting to get a little workout.

I don't think I have given too many one star review but this place is the pits for customer service. I come here now and then and every time I need help finding something, I think the customer service completely sucks. The staff are friendly, yes, but they have absolutely no training and seem to hardly know where anything is. Once they had me buy the completely wrong type screws and I had to bring them back. When I was here a few days ago, the whole cash register system had failed throughout the store and there were huge lines and no one had the basic courtesy to say anything to the people on line. Very frustrating overall.

I'm not a big fan oh Home Depot just for the fact that I prefer to support small business instead, and Home Depot supports Bush (ew!).
Having said that, I can not find most of what I need at small local hardware stores, Lowe's is too far away, and Home Depot is basic easy one stop shopping. I think in general they have pretty knowledgeable employees, but more so at this store. It's laid out really well, or maybe I just know this one better than other ones.
They have a pretty good gardening section, and did you know you can return dead plants? even 3 years later, if they die, you can return them!
I am surprised by the bad reviews. I visit this place about once a week and have had 95% of them be good trips.
oh, PS. do not have them do your roof. I have heard bad things about that, and they quoted me a really high estimate.

I shop here every week in my job as a facility supervisor for a major natural foods store. If I ever need help from an employee, I am likely to be left without an answer, frustrated, or alone.

I have actually heard a sales person yell at a customer to "stop asking me so many questions!"--
-I spent 30 mintues trying to return an item I had a receipt for.

Oh of course, they are clueless about the items in the store as well. The only guy who knows his stuff is the Russian guy who works the tool rental area. Fend for yourself or be prepared for punishment.

I'm going to agree with just about everyone here and say that while I normally have no qualms with Home Depot, the service at this one is absolutely horrendous.
Awful.

I generally really like Home Depots, but this one falls short of my expectations.  The main reason for this is the staff.  They are aloof, and unwilling to go to any great length to help you.  Even when I call in with a question, I spend most of the time being redirected to other people, and then end up no better than I began.  The main reason I prefer Home Depots to mom and pop hardware stores is the generally outstanding staff, but not at this location.

Very rude employees -- act like they are doing a huge favor for you if you ask for help. Also, seem to give you attitude if you try to return anything - even with a receipt.

Everyone knows what home depot is but even in a large metropolitan area like Boston it is still your only option for picking up construction materials.  Here you have a good selection to choose from plus all the extras like paint, gardening supplies etc.

Need some concrete mix? some lumber? some chicken wire? Only choice is home depot.  This one is located right  by the arsenal mall.
