Review Highlights
I love that this place is so close to my house, because I have had to rush here for emergency fondant in the past (they open at 10 am on Saturdays and there's usually a line of people outside with their own cake emergency waiting to rush home). This place has almost everything you need, and if they don't have it, you can easily have it ordered. It's packed to every nook and cranny, and sometimes it just is overwhelming (and a bit unorganized). You will probably find things you didn't even realize existed and "absolutely HAVE" to have.
The lady that owns this place is very helpful. She will stand there and talk you through every project you have and even will talk you out of buying unnecessary products as well so you don't waste your time or money. She was amazingly wonderful and patient with me when I was making my first wedding cake order, and continues to be ever so helpful with each new order I take as well. Heck, she's even so trustworthy that one time I realized I forgot to grab something and I had already paid that she said, "oh I know you'll be back, just pay for it next time." I didn't know whether to think she was crazy or not, but then I realized, "oh wait...I've been coming here every other day for the past 2 weeks...she knows I'm coming back...damn, I'm a regular now."
I absolutely adore this place and could live here and spend hours going through the stuff here. The boyfriend is driven crazy by what he considers "clutter and unorganized mess." I say this only to warn those of you who are totally OCD before entering.
I knew it was a very bad idea coming here.
I thought to myself oh, I'll just check it out, after all, it is only 4 blocks from the apartment.
OMG! Are those the sugar footballs I've been looking for to put on cupcakes?!!!
SHUT UP! Jumbo leaf sprinkles?!!!
ACK! Cute Halloween cupcake toppers?!!
Home Cake Decorating Supply - I kinda love you.
You know why I love this place? The owner is incredible generous with her time and information. Talk about going beyond good customer service.
A few years ago I popped in here while pursuing the daunting task of deciding on a cake for my own wedding.
I was obviously not there to find my own cake supplies, but she went out of her way to get an idea what I was attempting to find and gave me a list of her favorite bakers in town. Low and behold, I found a couple who ran a small independent business, who that made us an incredible cake (that tasted superb)- exactly what I was looking for.
Now that I am discovering baking as an alternative sport, I need to make a visit for my own purposes....although I fear the multitude of choices! A veritable baking rabbit hole.
I don't think there's another place quite like Home Cake in Seattle. Seriously, this is a must stop if you're a beginner attempting to make your own cake. Well, I should clarify and say attempting to decorate your own cake. Because, let's face it, the cake part is almost a no brainer. But decorating the cake and having it look really beautiful, that's the hard part.
Here you can find, not only the most extensive selection of cake decorating supplies I have ever seen, but you also get to consult with the owner who is someone generous with her knowlede and passionate about cake decorating. You always feel a little bit more inspired and confident that yes, you can do it.
It is a tiny little place and it is crammed with lots of fun goodies, but I enjoy it and like other have said, it's nice to support a locally owned small business.
If you like to bake (even remotely) you will love this store. I heard about it through a random blog and decided to check this place out. As soon as I entered, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff that is crammed into this place!
It's total chaos and is a mess, but you are bound to get what you need and then some. I love to just stroll through the aisles and I end up finding all of these cool little tools!
They have a great selection of cake boxes (which they sell individually, should you only need one), cake rounds, powders, fondant, stands, etc!
Prices are good and the owner is EXTREMELY helpful. Mind you, she'll make others wait (and it sucks to have to wait) but it is definitely worth it! She saved me some moolah by telling me I didn't need a few things and could get away with others!
Best. Place. Ever. for baking supplies. This is my go-to place for supplies. The place looks like a hoarders' dream filled from floor to ceiling with everything you need. And I mean everything. Do not be overwhelmed - just ask the nice owner for help.
In my search to find a place that has good quality and selection of cupcake supplies I stumbled across Home Cake. This place is awesome and the owner even more fantastic. Admittedly, the place is a disaster and you definitely have to be willing to spend a lot of time there but it is by far the best bakery supply shop around. If you're really looking for something specific just ask the owner, she is a wealth of info and amidst all the chaos she knows exactly where everything is. The prices are great, super competitive. I wish she had a little more selection for mini cupcake decorations but that's about my only complaint. I'll definitely be coming back here for all my baking needs!!
Forget the chain stores and try this place. I am a second generation Home Cake supply customer, my mom shopped here when I was a kid when the owners mother ran the place. They have everything but the best part is the owner because she is like a baking dictionary. I walked in there today and picked up 3 tips just listening to her help 3 other customers....and she is not just after your money...she is the best! Anyone looking for citric acid for ice cream - they have it. I brought in a picture of a cupcake and asked which tip was used and she had the answer. It is a small store but packed with a punch and good vibes!
Like most others, I love this store! Just a bit of advice, have a snack before you go and don't go if you're tired. It takes a lot of energy to go through all of the piles of stuff in the store whether you're looking for something specific or just browsing. I love that they sell individual cake boxes, cake rounds, meringue powder, glucose, etc. that you'd normally have to buy large quantities of.
Four stars rather than five because, well, it's not all that clean for a place you'd buy food-stuffs from.
I too love this place like others! This place is just around the corner from my house and I bake a lot, but I didn't know about this place for a long time.
The owner of the place is very helpful and every time I go there, there are people asking her questions and poking around the store. I always buy some extra things I don't need but who cares! It's a dream store for bakers.
First time customer soon to be long time. Great stuff, cluttered but good. I love supporting local businesses, and this is a great one to support. The owner is the only employee and she'd got tons of advice and is really friendly. Seattle is an impossible city to find baking supply's in, Home Cake Decorating Co. offers a huge supply of all your baking needs and its cheap! For instance; those colored sugars that retail for nearly $5 for 2oz at the grocery store and "other" cooking stores costs $2 for 4oz, twice as much for more than half the cost.
My new favorite place to shop!!
As I'm getting more into baking- I'm stocking up on supplies as I need them. :) There are so many decorative & creative things you just cannot find in the baking section at your local grocery store or dept store.
The owner is very helpful. I have a hundred questions and each time she is patient & gives me the best options. When I was in there the other day this guy came in that had lost a bet with his cousin and needed to make a pineapple upside down cake. He picks up a pineapple shaped baking pan and is clueless on the rest! As I was looking around I heard her walking him through what he needed to make his "punishment". Although, it sounds super fun to me~ Maybe he'll find that he enjoys it. :)
The parking lot can be a little tricky. I parked in one spot that had a divot and caused me to scrape under the bumper. I hate when that happens.
I love this store... It's the cake pan equivalent of my favorite yarn shop: Acorn Street (A little cramped/slightly confusing, but chock full of goodies you didn't know you needed). No matter where you go, baking supplies (pans, pastry tips, cake stands, etc) are going to be spendy. That's just a fact of life. If I'm going to shell out the bucks for any of it though, I'd rather spend it here than a Sur la Table or Williams and Sonoma (not that I don't enjoy lusting after the goodies there too).
The woman who runs this shop is super knowledgeable/helpful, and quick to offer suggestions or substitutions if you can't find quite what you're looking for.... though if you can't find it here, you're definitely not going to find it in any of the chain shops around town.
This place has saved me from wedding cake trauma more than once! Well the store... and vodka... Combined, it's amazing how much better they make me feel about my decorating skills! Magic! ;-)
If you need baking supplies, this is the place to go. Relatively small shop crammed full of pretty much all the essential needs for decorating sugary treats! The customer service could not be better. The woman who runs the place is extremely helpful and willing to offer free advice and doesn't try to sell you things you don't really need. She made me feel less intimated by materials I haven't worked with and helped inspire courage. Really above and beyond.
My specialty is cookie decorating and I was so excited to stock up on all the supplies and colors I needed at great prices!
Extremely fun to peruse, even if you're not actually baking anything but want some inspiration. Also, one of the only places I've been to in a while that has gold and silver, as well as multicolored, dragees- a vital part of proper holiday cookies, if you ask me.
I am NOT cooking person what so ever, but last Valentine's day, I decided to make chocolate for my boyfriend. I was looking on line for bake supply places and this place came up. I didn't have time (it was 3 am when I was on line ....) so I just pick this place. WOW! This place is small and easy to miss it, but has everything. like EVERYTHING. The lady was so nice too. well she would've said like "buy this book and it will tell you what to do." But instead of that, she was showing all the pictures in the books and telling me what to do and say, "you don't really need this book. Just try and if you are having hard time then call me and ask."
OH MY GOD! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!
This place saves me every time I have a special cake or a wedding cake to make! they have EVERYTHING here that you can possibly imagine, and today, I even managed to find rice paper here for some Torrone that I will be making..the owner is so helpful and friendly.. I cant imagine my baking life without Home Cake..
Great place to get all your baking, caking, candy and decorating needs!! I don't make cakes (I would if I could but my oven tells me its not going to happen) but I like to make things with chocolate molds for the holidays. They have a ton of molds and good melting chocolate too! The staff is really helpful as well. Only bummer is the hours cause I can never make it there during the week from where I live and work so I have to plan ahead of time when I want to make something to get there on a Saturday since they are closed on Sundays.
Wow wow wow!
What a neat lady, what a fun place.
I'm no baker but sometimes a girl just needs to pretend she's the great cake-inator.
This little tiny place is CRAMMED FULL of stuff for making cakes, cookies, pastries. You name it.
Plus miscellaneous decorating thingies.
I particularly liked the coloured sugars (for rimming cocktail glasses, duh!), and when she saw me with the gold sugar (making lemon drops this weekend) she told me about this edible sparkly gold dust that bartenders use -just a smidgeon in a champagne glass and the bubbles come up gold! (cha-CHING!)
Also found I couldn't do without a gold scallop-edged cardboard base to put the cake on, and another cooling rack, AND an instant read thermo 'cause like a dork I left my old one stuck in a roast at 400 degrees and MELTED the friggin thing.
Score. What a place.
Remember how crowded the old Arche McPhee used to be? This place makes that look like an empty warehouse by comparison. If she don't gots it, you don't needs it.
You know you've got some cake-ination in ya.
Get it out!
Despite the fact I'm a Food Network addict, my cakes suck. The cake itself is fine, but they look like a 5 year old did the decorating. On a tip from my sister I stopped in here and found SO MUCH stuff to decorate with there's just no way I can screw up the next cake. Or cupcakes, 'cause they have the greatest pans to make them with. Sprinkles you can't find anywhere else, like little animal shapes. Sugar flowers. Icing bags and tips. Pans. Sugars. Colors. Flavors. I had no idea. I really want to try a cake covered with fondant. Anyway, this place is easy to miss and not at all fancy, but word of mouth keeps lots of customers coming in the door and it's easy to see why.
This is the BEST most AMAZING source for cake making stuff in Seattle! The store is small and cramped, but that's only because there's so much good stuff crammed between its walls. They have everything you need for birthdays, weddings and odd and end baking projects. More pastry tips than you can shake a stick at!
