I've had their Holy burgers on a couple of occasions. They're good juicy burgers, but the holy sauce is a bit salty and little overpowering for my taste - so plain mayo on mine. I like to taste the beef not the sauce.
I will be back for sure to try their other sandwiches.
Yuck. Just ... yuck. Naming this place holy burger must be some sort of sin. The puns would be forgivable if the food was good, but they're not. And maybe it was an off day when we came, but it was a regular weekday lunch, around 1 o'clock, and there was only a few people around so it couldn't have been because they were rushed. Our food took a while to get regardless.
I had a regular holy burger. My bf got the epiphany (cheese) burger. The meat itself was decent, but the bun was cold and stiff on both of our burgers. It really ruined the entire burger for me. I don't really expect them to toast the bun, however, if it weren't entirely COLD that would have improved it at least a little. Our fries tasted like they had been fried that morning and left hanging around on a counter. Maybe once upon a time they had been good, but by the time we got them were simply cold and not at all fresh.
I won't come back to this place, although I work in the general vicinity. The only good thing about it is the mints.
Just checked back on this burger joint and came away smiling like the cat that caught the mouse, and it was fat! I ordered the basic burger with Swiss (baby Swiss at that!) and an order of fries with a fountain diet coke. I was number 75 and they'd just called 65 so I would have a few minutes to kill. I walked down the street and grabbed today's Examiner and came bact to Holy Grill and every seat was filled with happy campers but I soon found a stool at the tiny counter and sat down to read the bad NEWS of the day.
In just minutes my order was up, number 75, and I got a tray with my burger boxed and a tray brimming over with perfect fries. I had a fry and was hooked, had to pry myself away to take a bite of their ass kicking good beef cooked just as I ordered it. I've been super impressed every visit by QUALITY and this place. Good meat, really good meat! A great bun and I mean that. It is a perfect density for the meat, quality cheese, tomato, onion. lettuce, pickles and their sauce which tasted better than ever before.
I went at 2:30 pm and they're in an area that is lightly populated so I was kinda surprised they were packed, but they deserve the throngs of satisfied customers, their food is GREAT, the staff is terrific, the joint is clean and well maintained and it's my winner of the day!

Disapppointed in miscommunication w/staff :((((((((
Letter to Holy Grill:
I'm writing to let you know how disappointed I am in my experience at Holy Grill, something I'd been looking forward to after seeing a friend post a pic of the veggie burger on Facebook.
I had called in to ask if the veggie burger was vegan, and the person who answered said yes, if I got it without the cheese slice. I thought great, that's what I'll have. I'm lacto-vegetarian and I can eat some dairy products, but most definitely not EGGS.
I got there and ordered the Yoga Burger with the cheese slice and garlic fries. I brought it home hungry and excited to eat it, then I opened it up to put ketchup in in and saw a white creamy sauce. I called Holy Grill to find out what the sauce was. I didn't know it would be Holy Sauce which has mayonnaise! :( The girl on the phone told me to wipe it off. I told her I would take off the top bun which had the sauce, and take off the cheese, and just not eat them. I didn't know there was sauce on the bottom bun too.
I had looked at the menu in the store, but not seen the Holy Sauce description. I found it later on your website.
Anyway, I'm writing this to you so that you can train your employees to communicate with customers better. Mayonnaise is not vegan!! I'll do my part to be more careful about reading menus and asking questions in the future, although I thought I'd already asked the right questions the first time :(
Disappointed and out $10
I had some friends that raved about how good their garlic fries are. by the time we got there, i totally forgot to order that but went with the guru (mushroom and caramelized onions), root beer float and shared a virgin fries with the bf. the guru isn't that bad. it has a big yellow bun and yes it is yellow. then there are layers of the cheese of your choice (i chose pepper jack), mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, the patty and the juice from the burger. the first time i tried to pick up the burger, it totally fell apart. everything in the middle of the burger slipped right out because it was super juicy. but when you bite in it, it just taste like any other mushroom burger.
this place is really small. they would not be able to fit a large party because they do have limited seating. they price is good and i would come back to this place if i am in the neighborhood.
This place rocks. friendly people and GREAT food. I go there at least 3 days a week. I get the Ahi burger, the fried chicken sand, and the cheesburger. this place is off the hook.
My office is nearby, so our choices in the area are few and far between. After moving from downtown, the choices around the South Beach/SOMA area aren't that great for weekday lunch. This being said, Holy Grill is okay, but not great. Their fries are delicious. skin on potatoes with sea salt, but that by itself isn't exactly a meal...or is it? Anyway, they have many combinations of burgers, but unfortunately the combinations aren't that great. It takes them to damn long to prepare (hint: call ahead), and when you get it their buns are soggy from the burger run off. Their staff seems pretty anemic, with no real sense of urgency. There are tons of folks standing around waiting for lunch, but they still don't really hurry. Oh well...when your choices are limited what can you do?
had the Ahi Burger today and almost threw it out after 1 bite. Now, the fish was great....it was the oversized portion of "wasabi mayo" they poured on the burger which tasted like a combination of gym sock + wet dog.
keep it simple and order the beef burger and a shake and you'll be pleased but I recommend staying away from the Ahi Burger...it's a definite cruelty to fish.
I'm giving this place a 4-star rating because of the value and variety and flavour. It's not fancy Kobe beef but it's a great burger for a few bucks.
The best part is that if I can't make up my mind, I just order their special.
You can totally customize it so the idiots who wrote poor reviews deserve to be ignored. I am very selective and I like this place. It's close to home and it's quick and reasonably priced.
I've tried their buffalo burger, turkey burger and AHI salad and regular burgers from Diablo to triple bypass.
It's all what you crave and that's what I love.
The menu can be daunting but the staff are friendly and make it easy.
Their Diablo with blue cheese, no mayo rocks!! Careful with the Jalapeno but they don't call it Diablo for nothin'!!
I personally don't like burger that much, but I love the Salmon burger at Holy Grill. I feel angry while i am eating it. Because the burger is so big, and i have to eat it separately. I felt so messy regardless of the great taste. The juice, grill onion drops all the time...I just hate being messy , that's all. Last, it takes more then 20 mins to get my burger. then, i don't have much time less for my lunch break :(....
This is a pretty good burger deal for the buck. Cheaper but not as good as Slow Club, pricier but yummier (and way bigger) than In n Out. I'm still not sure about the buddha/enlightenment/spiritual thing re:ground up animals, but hey -- I'm only here to judge the food, not the ideology. I'm not a vegetarian, but if I were, I would still come here for the cheese fries. This stuff is all better "to go" since the place is tiny and they usually have mid-80s/90s soft rock piped in.
recommendation: whatever you order, get it on the whole wheat bun. It's tastier than the neon yellow bun they normally serve.
I walked into this place and took a look at the menu. It has an interesting theme of somewhat religious words and other things. They don't have that much seating. Probably about a nice 20 or 30 people can sit inside. Pretty much after that, our going to have to sit outside or just take it to go.
I ordered a Guru burger and a Nirvana garlic fries. The Guru burger has caramelized onions. That burger was really great. But I had one complaint. The caramelized onion was grill on the grill with oil. They pretty much splashed all of that onto the burger, oil and all. So, while I was eating, huge amounts of oil was dripping off the burger making me feel unhealthy. I would rate this place a higher rating if they just took the time to drain out the oil a bit. The Nirvana garlic fries was really good, but still have the same complaint about the oil on the garlic.
Nevertheless, a good place to eat. A bit on the pricey side, but still good.
Houston, we have a big frickin problem here.
Let me say that I frequent the Holy Grill often. Their Ahi Tuna burger gets 5 stars. The garlic fries - 5 stars.
What happened today? Really crappy. So I call and place my order, they tell me to come in 10 minutes. I get there in 10 minutes and the line is out the door. So I go to the end of the bar and ask the guy working if we have to wait in line to pay if we've already ordered and he tells me to go to the end. I asked what the point of calling in is if you don't get to pick up your food, and he says," So it's ready when you get here."
Well that's great, but when you tell me to come in 10 minutes just to put me in a line for 15, my food isn't ready when I get there, it's cold. And cold Ahi burgers make me sad.
Moreover, as this realization went through the line, several people expressed displeasure toward that policy, including others who were disgruntled in line as well.
If you can't offer a service to clients, don't offer the service. Half-arsing it is just a way to make some girl drop your 5 star to a 2.
Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich. Blue cheese. No pickles. Please.
This is what you say to the angel behind the counter. Then you sit on a pew against the opposite wall and wait, patiently, listening intently as they call out ready orders over the babble of conversation and music. Your number is called and you walk, no, float to the other end of the counter to collect your tray. Time stops, noise dissolves, mortality fades: you come to behold the greatest creation of any Supreme Being this side of the afterlife.
It is perfection. A divine construct. The golden ratio meets golden brown. Fibonacci in food form.
A truly religious experience with none of the guilt.
I haven't had a good burger in a while, let alone an organic buffalo burger.
HG has a pretty good variety of burgers (including turkey and veggie ones), and they aren't puny like some places in town. It has the feel of a burger joint that you would find outside of the city. For maybe a dollar or two more than Burger King, you certainly can't complain.
Have tried the Tadasana w/ cheese (turkey burger), The Enlightenment w/ cheese (organic buffalo burger) and the Epiphany (cheeseburger) and liked every single one. The have a great sauce they use and I like the roll and being given lettuce, tomato and onion. Too bad the sides are pretty slack. I tried the fries, but found them to be hard as a rock. Kinda felt they were not worth the calories. Another time I tried the onion rings. they were not crispy and only so-so on flavour. Bottom line, go for the sandwich, but skip the sides. I hear that Saffron 685 has the killer fries and they are right next door.
At the suggestion of a coworker I dropped by here yesterday after work to pick up a sandwich to go on my way to another event. First impressions: small but cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious sounding menu. I really had a hard time deciding (I was wavering between the Plain Jane, the Yoga burger, and the Guru burger).
I finally settled on the Plain Jane which was a chicken breast on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and holy sauce (some combo of ketchup, relish, and mayo I think). I decided to add avocado for $1 extra and after mentioning how good caramelized onions sounded the friendly cashier offered to substitute them for the regular onions on the sandwich. The result: pure bliss. :) The sandwich was large and juicy and delicious. I don't think I would add avocado again though, for an extra $1 I couldn't really taste the difference, especially with the delicious flavor added with the caramelized onions.
I like that they make every sandwich made to order, but it did take a little longer than I had hoped for my order so I ended up asking for it to go because I had to catch a bus. I'll definitely be back when I'm not in a hurry. Everything sounded so good I want to try it all, and as I was quite satisfied with my Plain Jane (which with the special onions was no where near plain tasting) I'll be adding that to my list of go to sandwich orders in the neighborhood.
I have not had a burger yet from here but I did have a pretty good chicken sandwich with some spicy sauce which is pretty good. I thought it was a little expensive though, 8 bucks, mot really gourmet and there are 5 or 6 other things I rather go to in the area. I will write an addition once i get a burger
After our weekly run at the Golden Gate bridge, my fatty friends and I love to reward ourselves with a fatty meal. That's the whole point of working out, right? My friend who lives in SF swears by this place! We ordered the burger with mushrooms, caramelized onions, and avocado (I forgot the name) and of course their garlic fries. The portions very generous, even my bf and I split the burger and fries and barely finished the fries! I would've liked the food better, but I got mine to-go and my burger and fries were already soggy. I would try this place again but this time I would dine in!
This is a great lunch place. I work at the college nearby and a group of us will go here every once in a while.
This place was more remarkable because you can get a burger for under 5 dollar, which a great deal for lunch. You can get fries & a soda combo, but then you would just be a fatty, which I am on occasion.
And let's face it, where else are you going to get a real milk shake in the area?
However, I do not go there anymore because they do not have a recycling or compost bin. I applause them for getting the green cups. But they forgot the following step of recycling them.
I look forward to when they improve their waste management.
The blonde girl working was SO nice.. which is just icing on top of the cake. The food is GREAT. not overpriced and just scrumptious! kind of hidden in the Soma but go find it! its great!
Ok, I've been addicted recently. Divinty burger + fries + a drink. It's one of my favorite times of the day when i get it. I just sometimes grunt when i get charged 10.25$ for that order.

So we go into the Holy Grill for lunch in SOMA. It's a few doors down from Patisserie Philippe, a great French Bakery.
To our surprise, this place was packed. Come high noon, it seems everybody is thinking the same thing. Where can I get a good burger so close to work? I get the St. Patty's Burger, which is 1/3 lb Angus Beef burger on sourdough with lettuce, tomato, onion. We couldn't figure out what makes this a St. Patty Burger other than the holiday coming up. Whatever - it was delicious but to me it seemed small for a 1/3 lb. burger.
I get a salad with my burger thinking it would be good to cut calories from having french fries. Mistake! My salad was drenched in dressing making a zero gain for me. In fact, after a few bites I couldn't eat the salad and tossed it in the trash. Shame.
My burger was good, but next time the fries. Will try the fish or chicken sandwich then too.
ok, so the food is not exactly 5 star worthy ...BUT i've factored in the fact that this place opens till 10p on most days and is one block from where I live. beef patty: juicy; sauce: forgettable; onion rings: oily; garlic fries: out of this world!! so what I'm trying to get at is not everything on the menu is fantastic, but there are a few worthwhile items. It's my neighborhood joint so you know I'll be back to show my support.
If I was holding a baby, I would drop it to get my hands on one of their tuna burgers....
Wasabi mayo and onion rings on a fresh piece of tuna??!!
They have lots of options on their menu as well if seafood ain't your thing. They have plenty of delicious normal burgers, and their sides are delicious and cheap. Garlic fries, FTW!
The staff has always been cool, and the prices are cheap, in comparison to the usual inflated prices in SF.
My only beef with this place is their consistency... Once I got my beloved tuna burger home and... I had to cook it. Something was off with it. It wasn't that the inside was raw, that's fine, I eat sushi, but ... there was something definitely wrong with this one, and my unemployed butt would rather fix it than waste food. :b
I'm a huge burger fan, and the reviews here are exceptional. I'm wondering why i had such a mediocre experience today??
The bun was toasted to the point of stale. i asked for no ketchup, but received no sauce, so it was a bit dry. And even if it didn't have sauce, it should have still been juicy, but it wasn't. Within 10 minutes of eating, the burger seemed very dry, overcooked, and that along with the non-heated bacon, stale bun (which i tossed) and end cuts of the lettuce, non-ripe avocado... it was not very pleasant dining experience. Either way, the fries we're fresh and great.
I'll give it another shot at some point and express to them my experience since i know they have to be able to do better. They are obviously highly regarded... it just didn't cut the mustard (or ketchup, special sauce... nothing).
I have never eaten at the restaurant, but one day a few weeks ago, Rob brought me a take-out burger from this place.
Rob on phone: "Are you hungry?"
Grace: "Not at all,"
Rob on phone: "You SURE?"
Grace: "Yep."
Thirty minutes later, he brought it over.
And - - I ate.
We have discussed this situation. He thinks, because I did eat it, that I was lying about not being hungry. I explained that my eating something is not evidence of hunger - - it looked good, smelled great, and simply to show gratitude for going out of his way to bring me food, I ate it. How fast and voraciously I ate it, also, has nothing to do with the fact that I was not hungry. It's a cheeseburger - as IF I need to be hungry to down one of these.
The burger is, first and foremost, HUGE. That's not to say I could not finish it, but simply that I'd be QUITE full if I did. It had all the right trimmings on it, fresh and crunchy - with a big patty and good cheese, minimal sauce, but the latter is probably because Rob knows I don't like any sauce on my burger. The bun could be daintier, I am not big on big buns - - but it was good bread. 3.5 stars for the burger.
Most outstanding, though, were their fries. Thick-cut fries, perfectly seasoned, still piping hot and absolutely delicious. When I say delicious in regards to fries - - don't picture healthy. Nothing about these fries were "healthy" - which is what made them outstanding. I didn't finish those, either - but at 4 in the morning when I decided I needed something to munch on while catching up on Tivo - - I nuked the remainder fries and went to town. STILL GOOD. 4 stars for the fries.
Not having been there, I can't comment on the restaurant itself, but based on the two things I did have, I'm inclined to go back for try more fattening things.
Sure, I don't need the calories or the fat, but you know what - - they sure do make me happy!!!
Wild salmon burger.
Wild Salmon Burger.
WILD SALMON BURGER!
A++++ will stuff in my belly again. And again. And again!
And the fries...oh god, the fries.
This place is pricey for the kind of food it serves, I can't deny, but we all know we'll dish out the dough for our 15 minutes of omg-orgy-in-my-mouth food heaven.
[EDIT 11/20/09]: Even though I hear this place is under new management, the salmon burger is still as delicious as it was the first time I had it. It's messy, you'll definitely get some caramelized onions + avocado + onion juices all over your fingers, but you'll be licking them by the time you're done so who cares! The fries were also fresh and came in even bigger portions than I remember.
Why people want them to hurry things up is beyond me. This is a locally owned place, not a Burger King. I mean, it's not gourmet by any means but it's definitely a step above your average burger joint. And it doesn't even take that long either; 10 minutes at most, if you're not ordering for your entire office. Get out of your fast food mindset and be patient. :)
Tasty Burgers! Near my work. Mandatory stars right there.
This is your run-of-the-mill fancy burger place, a few interesting burger recipes temp and confuse you as you read the menu. Everything's got a kitschy holy related name (too bad Holy Gelato! never did that). It's a bit pricey but most burger places like this are.
Um, yeah. The fries with Sea Salt are very good also.
BEWARE Holy Grill is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!
As I write this review I am on the verge of a food coma because I just left my favorite burger place in the city. OMG the Divinity Burger... it's sooo damn divine! Call me a glutton but it should be a sin to have a burger here without fries. Their fries are sprinkled with sea salt and probably a lil crack to get you hooked-well it worked! I run Nob Hill in the afternoon just so I can enjoy a burger at Holy Grill a couple times a month. I've only come for dinner but I hear that lunch can be a little packed so if you plan to come here for lunch just place your order ahead of time.
Yeah, this place makes a pretty damn good fried chicken sandwich and the burgers are great, but . . . the service is soooo sloooow its nearly maddening. I've worked in short order business when I was a kid and I know the manager would've killed me for the rate of speed these guys work at. Their saving grace is the food, but if they can't get an order together with call in with 45 minutes to do it in, and have it on the counter . . . .
Just LOVE their crispy butter milk fried chicken with crispy onions.....I go there all the time for this YUMMY sandwich & the combo onion rings & fries !!!
& the PRICE is right too its under $10.00
Delicious burgers! Fantastically meaty, hefty, juicy, beefy, cheesy, so bad for you but so damn good! Luckily I work just a few blocks from this place. I used to think Burger Joint on King Street had the best burgers in SoMa until I found this place. I had a sit down meal the first time I came here and it took quite a while to get our food. They have a sign in the restaurant that states they take their time to make each burger. I dig that but when you only have an hour for lunch and the place is packed, you can end up with a tummy ache from chowing it down so fast. Subsequent times I've always called in my order and it was ready when I arrived to pick it up. The meat is fresh and so are the veggie toppings. The buns are yellow and soft. The fries are a bit hard and starchy but who needs the extra carbs anyway. They also have the cutest names for their burgers like Epiphany, Sacrilege, Guru... I'm a simple guy so usually order the Epiphany which is just a plain cheeseburger. Highly recommend.
I went into this place because it was packed, so I figured the food was gonna be great. The turkey burger I had was okay...I've had better. The worst were the fries. They were HELLA crispy and hard, and room temperature. Shouldn't you be serving fresh food during peak times? I went in at 1PM today. I wouldn't eat here again if someone else was paying for it. Dang, I think I have a stomach ache from those nasty ass fries!
This place canNOT get an order correct. I SPELL IT OUT and still you put the fucking shit on the burger! I tried to order online, WRONG. I have ordered on the phone, WRONG. I have walked in and watched the guy start to fuck it up, stopped him from fucking it up and still he managed to hide the goddamn tomato (that I said 4 times NOT to put on it) under the lettuce.
If they could make it correctly it would be a so-so burger. The fried chicken sandwich is pretty damn good. Shakes blow.
I give up.
Food is pretty OK and prices aren't bad considering what you get. People are nice, counter service decent. It's the kind of place you get lunch when you don't know what else to get in the area. Not great, but not bad either.
I visit the Holy Grill often for their beefy, juicy, get-all-over-your-hands drippy burgers, but I recently discovered a sandwich on their menu that has become my favorite without getting all over my hands.
The sandwich comes with chipotle mayonnaise and barbecue sauce, but I found that it is just as delicious if I order it dry. I'm talking about the Holy Grill's Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). It's a lightly battered fried chicken breast served on top of thin deep fried onion rings with lettuce, sweet pickle chips and fresh tomato on a seeded bun. The juicy chicken breast and the fat tomato slice keep the sandwich moist without the drippy condiments.
Order a side of their massive skin-on Virgin Fries (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) for only $1.25 and you have enough food to keep you stuffed for hours.
They open until 10 PM now, and since I often don't leave work until midnight Holy Grill's late hours are a big plus. I'm bumping these guys up to a 5!

Come here often after work or for lunch. The onion rings are great, the garlic fries are extremely garlicky (your breath will smell like dead pigeons!)
I recommend the Guru. Its my fave. W/ Pepperjack cheese.
decent burger joint out in the soma area. The bun was alright, meat was tasty, and they had pretty good garlic fries. The burger was huge. I ate way too much for one meal.
OK, It's been over a year-and-a-half and I decided to give place another chance since Balompie have closed a few months ago and dying for a good burger. Well, I have to say that after coming here 6 times in the past 2 months is a good indication that I am a HUGE burger fan of HG. Never disappointed in all the times I've had it here. I've been doing online ordering and that is a huge plus! Fries galore! It seems like there's 2 orders in every one order. I've only been getting the burgers, and will try the salmon burger soon. Thank you HG for being one of the best burger joints near the office (8th/Bryant).
