On a quiet afternoon a while back, I was bored and broke (actually, I'm still pretty broke).  I called up the best friend and we both decided that we needed to get out of the house.  So we decided to take the Metro all the way to Hollywood and hang out at the farmer's market.

I had so much fun that day.  We didn't stay too long at the market because we kept wanting to buy everything.  All the food vendors were really friendly and would answer my questions even though they were super busy.  Whenever I make it out to the market, I would make a point to purchase some organic fruit juice from one of the vendors.  It's delicious, healthy, and not too expensive.

Anyway, I highly recommend this Farmer's Market because it's really friendly, clean, and is close to the Metro Red Line.  Also, once you are done, you can ride the Metro again to Hollywood and Highland and just act like tourists for a day.

Best farmers market ever! The Hollywood farmers market is HUGE...and full of so many wonderful pieces of amazingness that I can hardly stand it! If you want farm fresh organic eggs, they've got 'em, 200 different kinds of sprouts...no problem, raw kombucha...yep...pickled carrots (my FAVORITE!) they have the best...any and every type of produce you might want, you can find here.

But the best thing about the Hollywood Farmers Market? The 'Kimchee' booth! No, it's not just kimche...it's homemade tempeh, tofu, pickled ginger and so much more...made in more ways that you could imagine (the spicy tempeh is AWESOME!). I recently bought a huge jar of fermented garlic...which is pretty much the best thing you can eat as far as your immune system goes...and it's tasty too! I also recently bought a jar of ginger tea...though it looks more like jam than tea. You take a tablespoon of the concoction and mix it with 8oz of water...and bam! Fresh Ginger tea...AMAZING for your immune system...drink it to keep from getting sick and for getting better when you are sick!

The second best thing about the farmers market is the 'Taste of Life' booth. 'Taste of Life' WAS a Vegan soul food restaraunt that recently had to close it's doors due to financial issues...but is still selling their wares at the market! You can get a Vegan 'egg/sausage McMuffin' or a whole plate of delicious that  includes vegan Bbq tofu, lasagna, kale, blackeyed peas AND cornbread. Yum!

The Hollywood Farmers market is just a lovely way to spend a sunday morning...even if you don't buy anything. Sip your coffee, wander the wares and people watch. You'll be happy!

I'm addicted to the Hollywood Farmer's Market (HFM). Between episodes of the Biggest Looser, Top Chef, and going to the HFM on Sunday's, I might make somebody a sexy wife/homemaker some day =). This place has culture, a variety of healthy produce, and some good places to grab a bite while you're there. The vendors are helpful and reasonably priced, and if you look close enough you're pretty much guaranteed some type of celebrity sighting (if that's your thing). I usually end my shopping trip with some old fashioned kettle corn, or some fresh watermelon juice.
All-in-all I can't recommend this place enough. I've dragged everyone of my friends (sometimes the Sun morning hangover can be a Bi*@#) and now they wake me to go. =)
Oh and try to be a good sport and bring your own bag. Lots of the regulars are green and it makes you want to be green too (every little bit counts).
See you Sunday =)

I love this place! The ambiance, the food, the veggies, the people, the free movie previews - all of it!

I have been going to this market since it opened in 1995. The vendors are nice; they will actually have a conversation with you and do not seem fake about it at all. Vendors will remember things about you which leads to great disounts, freebies, etc. Most of them are there from 6:30 to 2, even though the market is open 8-1. With that in mind, they have had a long day, with several vendors on the road since 4 am!!!!!!! But you would never guess that, would you?
Vendors to visit:
Peacock Family Farms = BEST EGGS EVER; sells eggplants, peaches, persimmions, raisins, WALNUTS and has, hands down, the best looking stand in the whole market!
Tutti Frutti Farms = best and most variety of tomatoes (when in season). Their tomatoes are sold in Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Pavilions, to name a few, but here they are cheaper & fresher! Also, if you decide to buy in bulk (a box, maybe more), you're bound to get a discount!
They also have the best coffee stand ever. They have 2, one in the center of the market, but that's not the one to visit. The one you do need to stop by is the one on Cosmo street, in the area with all the food vendors. They make organic coffee and they make something called a Cafecito! Sooooooooo good. Must visit NOW.
Pupusas are great, coconut cakes too, danishes are sweet :), and roasted corn is a fave of many. But they have many more vendors, such as Mexican food, Greek, Humus, Thai. You'll see for yourself, next time you're there.
I love this place; unfortunately im in SD and can only visit the HFM when I go home :(
ENJOY!

I said it's moderate, because it depends on how much you buy & from what vendor (some are more expensive than others)

My mom would go broke here if the prices weren't so reasonable! I literally had to yank her away from this poor little asian man before she purchased his entire selection of Bok Choy. This farmer's market makes the farmer's market in Plummer Park near my house look uneventful and picked over.
I love the energy here, everyone is so friendly and even being crowded and hot, it is one of those few places that is worth it because of the amazing selection of produce. I got some beautiful Roma tomatoes, white corn, and Bok Choy, (of course). The veggies look more tempting than the fruits, a lot of the peaches and nectarines were small or bruised. However, the vegetables were so abundant, I could almost see myself becoming a vegan (which was hard to imagine before coming here).
Thanks to this Farmer's Market, my mom will most likely be visiting me every Sunday, as this Market is her new religion.

Great farmers market with a good variety of vendors and some unusual finds. Good for produce as well as cooked food. Gets crowded around the prime time. Just wish we could bring our dog, however we did see a few people bring dogs regardless.

Yep. It's bomb. I'm there every Sunday stocking up on veggies for the week.
I love the Asian ladies for their fresh eggplant, bok choy and mustard greens, and I love the mushroom guy. His "Lobster Mushrooms" need to be tasted to be believed. Go great in a frittata.

Also, the cooked food stands are bomb- the Thai, Indian and coffee places are all next to each other- and that corner is my fave!

Plus fun people watching, haggling, and checking out the weird arts and crafts. Great way to spend a Sunday morning after getting your brunch on.

This is the best farmers market ever! Before moving here I had frequently walked through the farmers market in Union Square in NYC.. wow, they have nothing on Hollywood. I've been several times and enjoyed purchasing fresh berries, various herb & vegetable plants, and lots of delicious food. Those yellow raspberries are crazy! Taste of life is there, along with lots of tamales, pupusas, fresh lemonade, and flan. (This is how you get my boyfriend to come along) Just hop on the subway and get off at Hollywood & Vine.. then you don't have to deal with parking!

Such a fun way to spend a Sunday morning and afternoon.

This might just be one of the better ways to spend your Sunday mornings.  One of the best farmer markets in the LA area.  Everything is so fresh and the choices are great.  Its worth it to wake up early and it's recommended because it gets very hot and busy later in the day.

Def. GO THERE, worth the drive.

WINNER!

I assume all of my dedicated readers will know that I was on a city-wide hunt to find the best weekend farmers market. Well, after a mere month of trials and tribulations, I have found it. Hollywood, you rarely impress me but this market, what with its fantastic selection, tempting prices, and great vibes has soared to the top of the list.

This is an excellent farmers market. Parking is a little tough to find free street parking, but there's a couple of lots with reduced price parking for the market goers. It's relatively one of the bigger ones and it's a cool way to spend a Sunday morning. There's lots of great produce, not many cheapo bargains any more, but very high quality produce. Usually great selection of ripe/delicious fruits and veggies, excellent bread vendors, great mushroom man, delish hot food vendors and they recently opened up a Farmers Kitchen that uses the vendors produce, so you'll get great fresh ingredients. This last time here for a one day only sale, there was a great cookbook sale/fundraiser going on with hundreds of cookbooks for sale from 50 cents to $3 max.

Go here early to beat the crowds and find easier parking. Oh, there's also live music, flowers, live herb plants... it's actually a destination market, but if you are local, all the better.

Gotta love summer fruits / veggies that are in season right now.
We picked up some pluots, purple carrots, yellow watermelon, heirloom tomatoes (green zebra, brandywine yellow) and those little tiny yellow sweet 100 tomatoes. Oh, and let me not forget the fresh yellowtail we got from the fishmonger. I cant wait until they have summer white truffles.

Seems kind of like cheating to "review" the legendary Hollywood Farmer's Market, but I truly do love this market. It feels like home every time I go. We ride the metro from downtown, the only way to go! And can hop back on with all our goodies, share some and be home in an hour!

A great way to spend Sunday morning which is what we plan on doing tomorrow! I will add some pictures and more comments after my visit. If you are visiting L.A. this is a great "excursion"! A fine taste of L.A.'s great cultural differences and the ties that bind us together. We've been visiting this market for over 12 years, the first time was for our 10 year anniversary when my awesome husband surprised me with a Lion King matinee followed by a stroll through the market. I'll never forget it. Go make some friends at the market!! Go on Sunday! Ride Metro!

We found easy parking and wandered into the market, stopping immediately at the first booth we came to, in order to buy gourmet tamales.  Not enough filling, too much masa, but delicious anyway.  We then spent 2 hours wandering, ending up with 2 tamales, 1 bar of ginger and grapefruit soap bar, 2 pluots, 1 heirloom tomato, 1 cup of coffee, 2 waters, 2 diet cokes, 1 taco, 1 papusa, and one surprise of running into my sister, her daughter, and a friend.  It's a great place to people watch, and even though it was horribly hot, there's a lot of shade.  We spent about 30 bucks altogether, ate really good food, and were entertained.  I recommend the market for locals and tourists, it's a fun market for everybody.  You can get produce, flowers, plants, clothes, spices, cheese, chickens, food, drinks....and you are supporting local business.  It's all good!

Good times in LA.

There is a good balance between produce, cooked foods, flowers, herbs, and music. Perfect for a pleasant Sunday morning. There are lots of samples too. We went home with some delicious tomatoes, lettuce and melon.

Tip: Don't get the cooked foods if you are on a budget. My $8 gyro was only okay.

There is NOTHING bad about this place  The only problem I have is that there are too many damn options, which is obviously a good problem to have.

Being from the South, I was of course a bit disappointed in the lack of pork/chicken/beef vendors, but this is Cali so that's to be expected.

But when it comes to fresh fruit, veggies and other assorted goodness, this place has it all in abundance.

Let me just say...yippee. I felt spoiled with the Farmer's Market in Eugene, OR because it is almost exclusively organic which is important to me. When I moved to S. CA I was sadly disappointed in the Long Beach Farmer's Market...then I moved to LA (thank goodness) and lo and behold...the Hollywood Farmer's Market! Sunday mornings are truly fabulous due, in large part, to this market. Example: yesterday I biked there at 8:30 and procured all these amazing things: nectarines, blackberries, apricots, figs, avocados, lettuce, basil, rosemary, lemon verbena, cilantro, mint, asparagus, green beans, onions, strawberries, Bezian's whole-wheat rye bread, Soledad Goats goat cheese, and Spring Hill European salted butter. Heavenly.

I would estimate that about half of the vendors are organic or at least no spray which makes finding all sorts of wonderful and earth-friendly produce easy!

Go next Sunday. My advice: eat fresh figs with Soledad Goats goat cheese that is flavored with port wine and honey. Really. Do it.

Having been spoiled by all great Farmers Markets up in Napa, I was really looking forward to visiting one that had great produce, a good mix of food stands and a friendly community factor.

There are some farmers markets that strickly show up to sell produce (almost like a grocery store), but this one is so much fun! There are musicians who play, the balloon man who makes all sorts of fun shapes, lots of great food samples and best yet, it stretches a few blocks! There is so much to see, do and buy.

Pack up the family, show up early, bring your canvas bags and just have a great day. I can't wait to do it again!

Lots of organic and seasonal produce, plus prepared food and crafts. There are also seed giveaways, cooking demos and a guy making balloon animals for the kids.

It's a great place, but it gets *really* crowded later in the day, so get there early. If you actually want to do some shopping, I recommend getting there before 10 am.

If you're not into veggies, but just want to soak up the atmosphere and perhaps spot a celeb, then get there later - but don't bitch about the crowds.

There's validated parking at the Arclight.

If you like fresh fruit and vegetables, and you live anywhere in the vicinity of Hollywood, where else are you going to go?  The supermarket?  It's madness, people.  Even the most clueless eater can tell the difference between a supermarket fruit/vegetable and a fresh one supplied at a more direct route from the grower.  True, some growers supply Whole Foods and other high end stores, but then you pay a massive mark-up.  Compare: 3-4 dollars per pound for heirloom tomatoes vs. 6-7 dollars per pound at Whole Foods.  Madness, I say.

The selection at this market is amazng.  Say you want a carrot.  At the store, you go the produce section and take whatever they sell.  At the market, particularly a large one like Hollywood, several vendors will have carrots.  So you can choose between skinny, rainbow colored, and big fat bunny foo-foo carrots.  Personaly, I go to the hippies in the north area of the market for my carrot needs.  The market will also supply you with your more esoteric fruit and veggie needs: romanescue, borage, daikon all flourish when in season.  If you like Asian veggies, there are vendors who deal specifically in them and you will find what you need.

A special shout-out to my favorite non-produce vendor: the FLAN KING!  Like many (I am told), I don't really care for flan.  I don't like the way it slimes down my gullet, as if someone fed me a slug.  The Flan King serves no such slugginess.  It's the freshest, creamiest dessert you can imagine.  Try it and get hooked.

All I can say is, "Wow." Who knew that you could find such an amazing farmers market in the middle of LA?

While I was on a weekend visit to LA, Jeff and Keith suggested going to the farmers market for lunch. They were craving the papusas--and I'd never tried them. Let me say they were good enough for me to try to hunt down a similar place when I got back to NorCal.

The variety of prepared foods was impressive, and I fell in love with the Corn Maiden tamales. Yum! But I was also blown away by all the produce, flowers, plants, etc.

I felt like going to this farmers market was a way to really get a feel for the regular folk in LA. It's easy to only look for the glamour when you're in La-La-Land (sorry, couldn't resist) but this is about as earthy as you can get. I definitely recommend!

This farmer's market has the BEST:

Kettle Corn
-and-
Papusas...

EVER!!

My sister dragged my lazy butt down here one Sunday morning and was so glad she did.  I had walked my dog down here several times when I lived in Hollywood, but never actually went in since she's not allowed.  So glad I put the video games down to pass by the farmer's market that day!!

I've been to other Farmer's Markets around Los Angeles (i.e. the one on Melrose), but this one is my favorite.  It's slightly larger, has a lot of produce and food stands (a few mexican food places from what I remember), not to mention the greatest Kettle Corn on the planet.  Lots of shady areas to sit and eat while people watching, too.

Parking was not even that bad since there is a lot you can park in for a few bucks on Vine.  Just wish I could take the doggie inside, (but totally understand why they're not allowed). Can't wait til peaches are in season so I can jam down here and get some fresh fruit!

This is a great farmers market. We were looking for a big enough market to spend some time wandering around.

The selection was excellent - and we loved the sampling which allowed us to find the best tasting fruits from vendors.

I also must exclaim that the kettle corn is worth the visit alone! Phenomenal - and my kids are kettle corn connoisseurs.

There was a great mix of ethnic food stalls - and in fact so many we struggled to make a selection.

variety, variety of all that is produce & floral, toss in some baked goods and homemade _____ and a little more down food booths and you've got a great morning stroll to experience.  This is one of my favorite things on a Sunday morning to get me going. Coffee and a few bags, the sun and I get to knock off a few items off my list.  Recommedations: Firehouse Jack, dried white peaches, honey sticks, and the aquas frescas. Ooh, and yellow raspberries!!!

Stumbled upon this after looking for breakfast in Hollywood....

There's a good selection of produce that looked fresh.

Prices are on the high-side but compared to the Ralph's / Von's crap it's probably worth the difference because of the quality.

I had the John Dory from "Yummy Fish".  This was 9 bucks and was charcoal grilled....it wasn't overcooked as I specifically asked for medium.  The vendor said it was from San Pedro but after some research I don't really think it was John Dory because it's doesn't live in the waters on the West Coast.

This didn't quite fill me up so I had a Gyro / Donair from the Greek stand that seemed to be doing brisk business with big portions.  Don't order from these guys....I opened it up to share and thank god i did.  The salad mix was full of brown wilting almost rotten greens...meat was dry and old, and they drown everything in the dill yogurt sauce (which I love) but this was kind of disgusting....

Go to look for fresh produce and buy bread from Bezian's.

Sometimes a girl's just gotta have a tomato that doesn't taste like styrofoam (a la Ralphs).
Enter, Hollywood Farmers Market.
Get here early (i.e. before 10) to get good parking and avoid crazy crowds. You'll be in the company of local chefs scoring ingredients for their next culinary masterpiece.
I hadn't been here in awhile and it feels like the path thru the market got narrower. ha!  Am I getting fatter or claustrophobic (?) at any rate...
I've bought pricier stuff near the entrance and have kicked myself for finding it cheaper or better quality further down so I browse a lot.
Not everything is "cheap" here. Actually, a lot of it isn't. What it is however, is very fresh/organic and you get what you pay for.
The pupusa stand rocks as well as the tamale stand at the east end of the food row. The BBQ chicken/gouda cheese tamale is highly recommended.
oh, and don't forget to hone your "wheely-cart" dodging skills...

This is a perfect place to start your not-so lazy Sunday.

They have many kinds of fresh vegetables and fruits.   The market helps me find good asian-oriented vegetables, and their quality is much better than the ones in some asian grocery stores.

I also have to point out flowers they sell.  They tend to last very long.

Even if you are not looking for anything special, just stroll around and you'll find something interesting!

Organic, raw, cheap, plentiful, inappropriate use of "gourmet", free-range, non-sprayed, etc.!

Chicken, beef, oysters, fish, bread, honey, soap, produce, flowers (beautiful orchids!), food vendors, flan, hazelnuts, cheese, pistachios, herbs (oh so beautiful dill! and marjoram), beets!...

Ultra-nice vendors saying "please, sample!"

You can buy local, organic, free-range and just feel great about yourself.

I wish there were farmers markets as wonderful as this one everyday!

ahhh yes. the hollywood farmer's market.
stop number one. oysters. unshucked...because what's the fun in having your oysters shucked for you?
then off to grab garlic sourdough bread.
next we like to walk around and judge everyone. mostly parents with annoying strollers.
sometimes i walk around fantasizing what it would be like to busk at the farmers market. sometimes i don't.
lastly, we pick up some sort of mexican beer, go home and shuck some oysters and heat up garlic bread.
this is my favorite way to spend a sunday with my boyfriend.

The Farmer's Market is one of the things I miss the most about LA.  There was no better way to spend a Sunday morning than walking to the market, and soaking in the following:

1.  Extremely fresh fruits and vegetables at prices that won't make you run for the Ramen Noodles
2.  The very unique people that make Hollywood wierdly interesting
3.  The kids dancing along to a Reggae version of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"
4.  A diverse array of cuisine, including the best Papusas ever
5.  Some star spotting

Followed by a trip to Amoeba.  Best Sundays ever.

It's oddly comforting, to walk down Hollywood Blvd before most of the city is awake, to a place that is familiar and comfortable, where every week it is exactly the same...but in a very cool way.

My personal favorite Hollywood Farmers Market stands:

1. Carmela Ice Cream - try the salted carmel and then convince yourself not to spend your 401k on pints of it.

2. Papusas - I forget the name of the stand, but we all know going to the farmers market can sometimes be expensive, which is why i love getting a $2 papusa with cabbage salsa and sour cream

3.  Candles - Awesome smelling candles for reasonable prices, the ones in the glass are a little more but are sure not to make a mess.

4. Oil Lady (Also, incense lady) - the british incense lady sells these viles of oils for $5 and they are awesome substitutes for cologne.  She has ones that are knock offs of designers and she has more earthy ones.

5.  Produce - duh.  My only tip is to buy stuff that is in season for a short period of time, like persimmons, pears, or some weird fruit you happen to stumble upon.

i've been here countless times. AND....
you know what i've discovered? i like boys/girls who cook.... WELL.
you know what else i've discovered? there's a ton of hotties here!

live/street performers, GREAT prices on organic produce, roasted corn Mexican style, tabbouleh, fresh peanut butter, Polish/Russian bakery, Hamachi, donuts, tacos, Korean food, homemade candies & chocolates, pastries, imported cheeses, etc. oh, and PUPUSAS. holy mackerel. this is like Disneyland for me.

you'd think this would be a lame spot for a date--- but seriously, i would swoon over you for taking me here.

If my memory is doesn't fail this place is the Famer Markets OF farmer markets. they dont fuck around.

Its filled with everything you can pretty much think of from Grapples to Heirloom Tomatoes. ( which i LOVE)

Heirloom tomatoes don't sound like they're new. They also don't sound like food. A food name shouldn't connote durable valuables that fustered in granny's attic until her recent, unfortunate demise. The organic farmers must think that they've tapped into the nostalgia/anything old is good/Antiques Roadshow market with this one.

But I think that a better name would be "non-bioengineered tomatoes." That wouldn't make me feel so much like a snobby, prissy sucker when I invite my friends over and we eat tomatoes and everyone asks me what kind they are

I don't understand why the Santa Monica Farmers Market get so much more hype than the Hollywood Farmers Market.

Hollywood Farmer's Market = Food Heaven

I woke up at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning and hopped out of bed. I was full of such excitement. Open door glorious farmer's market. I grabbed my canvas bag and zipped on over to find farm fresh free range eggs, vibrant produce and even sinfully delicious gluten free chocolate chip cookies. I went crazy, like a kid in a toy store, and carried as many bags full of produce as I could carry. Everything was super affordable. I'm not joking when I say, if you fill your kitchen with such delicious food, there is ZERO craving for over processed crap food. One of the many reasons I am in love with California: fresh organic delicious affordable produce all fucking year round baby!!!

The cherries are orgasmic. Better than candy. Sweet. Rich. Sinfully decadent.

I don't even like strawberries but fell in love with the organic beauties. Fresh. Fragrant. For dessert I munched on the strawberries and bit of dark cholate. Can we say heaven?

Green goodness. Sugar snap peas. No need to cook. I ate them as is. So crunchy. Forget potato chips -- I would eat sugar snap peas any day as a tasty snack.

I packed my lunches for the week. A salad bowl and a fruit bowl (cherries/strawberries/rasberries)

The best thing is I feel so healthy without even trying. I'm not giving up flavor. I am excited about going to work tomorrow just so I can eat my lunch -- and that says a lot if you know me. The beauty of food gets me a bit choked up.

Every Sunday, this place somehow always seem to clean me out of the cash in my wallet.  Side note on parking - I don't know why everyone has a hard time with parking.  I always find street parking after circling twice. A couple blocks of walking Really won't kill you.

Anyways, vendors that I have to buy something from:
1) Salad Lady - I always look forward to getting the mesclune and spicy mix.  A big bag for ONLY $3.50. Yum, top that with some goat cheese and vinaigrette.....Yum

2) Guy with the pita chips + tabbouleh. Perfect snack food.

3) Cheese Dudes - I'm absolutely hooked onto their Garden Herb Gouda.  The cumin one is also pretty tasty.  They said they're coming out with a SUPER Spicy Jalapeno one next week. Can't wait to try.  Yes, this would be where a chunk of my change would go to.

Vendors I eye a lot but haven't bought from:
1) Sprouts Guy - They look heavenly.  Must buy some next time round for some yummy sandwich creations.....mmmm simple egg salad; or maybe filling for fresh rolls?

2) Organic Nut Lady - I think it's called D's Nuts.  Not sure....the Almond Butter Spread sample..........soooooo delicious.

Music's great.  Sing along:
"Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana, Daylight come and me wan' go home, Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana, Daylight come and me wan' go home.........Day, me say day, me say day, me say day...
Daylight come and me wan' go home"

Last note: Hula Hoop Lady, LOVE the way you dance.
