The main selling point for this hotel is the on-suite kitchen, which comes equipped with everything you would need to dine in your room - except for paper towels. It sucked trying to look for something to wipe the counters with, and you end up using the bathroom towels or tissue. Besides that, it's a solid hotel to stay in, especially for business trips, as was in my case. The kitchen allows you to avoid eating out as much because you have the luxury of a fridge and microwave (or stove, if you actually want to cook) to heat up your home-cooked food. The room itself is decent...flat screen TV, nice dark wood furniture, comfortable beds, a balcony, and a clean bathroom.

The hotel staff is friendly also. You get coupons for a free breakfast for every night you stay in so it is a nice perk to have. I like ordering my breakfast to go the night before and pick it up right when the restaurant opens at 6 o'clock so I can be on my way to work at that time. Unlike other "free" breakfasts, the food is actually cooked to order so you're not left wondering if it's just heated up from the night before.

Overall, this is a good hotel for the weary traveler, both for business and pleasure.

We decided to adopt a dog from a rescue group, but there was just one problem...the rescue group was located in SoCal.  Ordinarily I would have just flown down, but we didn't want our new pup flying in a cargo hold for the trip back to San Jose.  The rescue group agreed to meet us half way and we decided to drive down and stay in a hotel for the night before making the return trip.  We didn't need anything fancy for an overnight trip, and our only real requirement was that the hotel needed to be dog friendly.  We booked a room at Holiday Inn Santa Maria and called ahead to confirm our reservation, no problem they told us we could arrive at any time and our room would be ready.

When we did arrive they told me I was lucky because this was the last room they had for the night.  How am I lucky when I have a reservation?  When we got to our room there was one king bed, we had booked a room with  two double beds since there were three of us.  I called the front desk to complain, but this was the last room that they had available so we had to settle for a roll away bed being brought in.  There were no pillows on the roll away and when we asked for some we were told that housekeeping had run out of pillows.

There are a lot of positives to this hotel, our room was clean and spacious, the kitchen was a nice feature, and there was plenty of hot water when we showered the next morning.  We didn't use the pool while we were there, but it looked clean and well maintained though I can't vouch for how warm the water is.  I really wish that I could give this place at least a three star rating because the rooms are definitely worthy of it, but the problems we had with our reservation cannot be ignored.  The manager was not on duty during our stay and though the front desk staff promised they would have them contact me I have yet to hear from the manager.  Clearly this hotel is lacking in the customer service department.  I'm not sure if I would stay here again, the rooms were clean and the location was very convenient, but when I take the time to make a reservation I expect it to be honored.

I'd like to give this hotel four stars but I can't because I've had bad experiences with some of the staff.

1) One of the bartenders always seems like she's in a bad mood and is mad at the world.  Since I've stayed here for extended periods, I hated coming down to the bar every night and dealing with her.

2) I checked in once to a non-smoking room that smelled like smoke.  I went to the front desk to ask for a different room and the guy blew me off at first saying "Well, the computer says it's a non-smoking room".  Yeah, that was exactly my problem.  He finally changed my room for me but didn't apologize at all.

Overall, the rooms are decent and most of the staff is extremely friendly, but it only takes one or two events to ruin my experience.

Samwise and I stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn on Day 4 of the AIDS LifeCycle 4 bike ride.  Yes, we did the "Princess Tour" but just for one day.  After 300 miles of cycling and 3 days of showering in shower trucks (had no idea these existed until ALC) and sleeping in tents, a night with a REAL shower and a REAL bed with the opportunity to do laundry was a godsend.  This place was chosen because it was only a quarter mile from the ALC basecamp at Preisker Park.

We got a great deal on a double twin room and apparently several dozen other ALC riders had the same idea, as we saw a lot of them walking the hallways, eating at the restaurant, and doing laundry.

It's your standard Holiday Inn and the amenities are what you'd expect.  The layout is at least interesting because it's Santa Maria after all so the land is cheaper and you don't need to have a solid boring rectangular edifice that maximizes rooms per square foot.

The bar downstairs was actually nice, as was the lobby and the staff.  It was actually very hard to get a reservation because we found out later, Jacko was on trial in Santa Maria the next day, so everyone and their mother was booking rooms.
