7 reviews for Holiday Inn Historic District
only stayed here for about 8 hours, but it was the most impressive 8 hours i have ever spent at a holiday inn in my life.
during a long road trip, the husband and i wanted to spend the night in charleston. this happened to be a very inexpensive option and i was surprised to see such overwhelmingly good reviews for a holiday inn. i mean, how good or bad is a holiday inn ever? anyways, we could tell when we pulled into the driveway that this was something different. a line of rocking chairs swayed in the wind on the front porch and a real fireplace housed a blazing fire in the lobby.
the fixtures in the room were something i would expect in a high end hotel. the bed was uber comfortable, and there was even a form on the nightstand to request a pillow of a different firmness. ha.
i was disappointed at the lack of complimentary breakfast, but it gave us a chance to explore the city so even that wasn't really a negative. the concierge directed us to the best way to see the city in 1/2 hour (after laughing that that was all the time we had to spend before getting back on the road), but we ended up having a very nice quick trip.
i know that if we ever find ourselves in charleston again (and i hope we do), we will reserve a room at this holiday inn

I stayed at this Holiday Inn for a conference. It's location is great - walking distance to restaurants, markets, museums, and the bay. The service was very good throughout, from front desk to concierge. I came back to the room and cookies, water, and chocolates awaited me on the nightstand. The bartender was attentive with a good selection of drafts. Decor and adornments were what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn.
My only complaint was cleanliness. I don't need new towels and sheets everyday, but there was no way for me to make that request. On the other hand, some trash was not attended to. Very strange.

A typical Holiday Inn--older building, dated furnishings, mold in the bath tub in those hard to see spots, but great service. The folks at Holiday Inn have done a great job at instilling a sense of service to their staff. Everyone was very friendly. This particular hotel is at a great location and easy walking distance to the old Market and Charleston nightlife. Couple of price things to factor in: parking is $11 per day in their private lot (or overflow) and taxes/county fee/destination fee/destination fee tax will run you about $22 per night. Just what the hell is a destination fee and why does it have a tax? At any rate, the AAA rate of $173.95 (they didn't have a government or military rate at the time of booking) quickly became a total bill of $207.70 which I thought excessive for this hotel. They do offer free internet cable hookup which worked well and is always appreciated. Priority club membership benefits consisted of turn down service between 6-9, two small bottles of water, and two (really--just two?!?!) Hershey kisses. I've had better beenies at other Holiday Inn properties. Be sure not to miss the fresh chocolate cookies in the lobby in the evening! A decent one-night stay though I'd probably shop around for a better deal next go around.
This Holiday Inn has been my home for the past 2 Cooper River Bridge Run weekends. The years before that were spent in other, less wonderful hotels, that often charge a lot more.
This Holiday Inn is different than what you expect- it's swanky with excellent service, even during a peak weekend like when I visit. The staff is friendly, the housekeepers are thorough, and they were happy to let me stay a couple hours after check out to catch up on sleep before heading to the airport. Excellent service!

I stayed here with my dad on a recent father-daughter weekend in Charleston. It's a pretty standard Holiday Inn, with a couple major exceptions. The biggest one, which several other people have mentioned, is Kevin the concierage. He is truly passionate about what he does, in addition to being a very friendly guy who is also extremely knowledgeable about Charleston. Despite the fact that he works 7 days a week for about 10 hrs a day, there always seems to be a line to talk to him, but it is very worth it to spend about a half hour waiting your turn. He is NOT one of those concierges who will send everyone to the same restaurant, the same tour, the some monuments, etc. He listens to what you want to do on your trip, and will help you plan an intinerary that caters to your interests and tastes. Neither my dad nor I are typically people who use a concierge service (we prefer to plan ourselves with the help of guidebooks) but Kevin pointed us to a wonderful walking tour and a great (new) restaurant, Virgina's on King, that we never would have found ourselves. Unlike other concierges I've talked to, if you do really want to do something that you heard about in a guidebook (for example, visit the excellent but extremely touristy restaurants Magnolia's or 82 Queen) he won't insist on talking you out of it. He also takes a few lucky people each week on a nighttime walking tour of Church St, the street where Charleston's most elite residents live. As he points out on the tour, it' s a completely different (and much more magical) place at night, so even if you've walked by it several times during the day, it's worth going again. He also knows lots of historical facts about the town, houses and residents that are very interesting to hear.
Other good things about the hotel that are more standard: There is fresh fruit and coffee and tea available in the lobby pretty much all day, complimentary bottles of cold water available from the front desk (this was VERY nice after a long day in the Charleston heat), and freshly baked cookies from 4 pm to 6 pm. There is also a lovely verandah with a lot of rocking chairs, and a backyard courtyard/patio with tables and a swimming pool that is quite good-sized for a hotel pool. The hotel is also in an excellent location, right in the heart of the historic district and very near all the good restaurants and King St shopping. The rooms are also pretty good-sized and were very clean, although one day the maid told us that if we didn't leave our room immediately, she wouldn't be able to clean it (this was after we had been out from 9 am to 2:30 pm and then back in our room for only about half an hour or so...a little weird).
It's not a 5-star hotel, but in terms of value for the money, it definitely deserves 5 stars.

The best Holiday Inn in the state. Yes, in the entire state of SC. You get more than your monies worth here, believe that. Great service, great rooms (suites available) and it's just as close to everything you want to see as any of the other fancy-pants hotels that charge 2 or 3 or 4 times as much per night. The bar has a wonderful selection of beers on tap, and the restaurant is pretty tasty, too, if you're too lazy to go out and hit up one of Charleston's many many wonderful restaurants.
The Holiday Inn Historic is all about the concierge Kevin. This man loves his job. Rarely will you see someone as enthusiatic about his work as Kevin. And he knows it all. He's not going to send you to Magnolia's or Charleston Grill or any of those places every other concierge in the city seems to direct folks to. He will give honest opinions and tailor your visit to fit your schedule/budget/wish list.
Best hotel deal in town, unless you want to stay 15+ minutes outside the city (cheapskate).

Good, standard Holiday Inn. A bit expensive for what it is, in my opinion, but well-located and very clean (we used priority club points, but the rate for paying guests was like $250/night). They wouldn't let us check in early even though rooms were available, which was very annoying. I worked for Holiday Inn (at 2 locations) for a couple of years in college and we always let people check in early if the room was clean and ready. Why not? What's it out of your paycheck? They did, however, give us a late checkout, so I'll forgive them...
