I am used to staying in 4 star properties, so was a little nervous about choosing this hotel. I went for it because of the location--easy access to the freeway and just 3 miles from my relative's house, to which I'd be making multiple trips over 3 days for wedding festivities. Also, I wanted a property with interior doors (vs. each unit opening to the outside--for safety reasons), and since this was a local stay w/ a purpose instead of a vacation, I didn't feel like paying extra for parking, wifi, etc.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a full service hotel, but I found the staff to be friendly and helpful; room was clean and comfortable; breakfast was fine. I was a bit annoyed that they don't have regular hangers since I needed to take a clothing change with me one day (their hangers are the kind that have a peg on top that slips into slots), but I got over that. I also wish they had vending/ice on each floor. I did not use their iron (brought my own from home since I had delicate clothing); the ironing board was a little lopsided, but I didn't complain about it. Basically, the stay was fine and met my expectations.
In a similar situation, I would stay at the property again. It's a good value property for a family. -

I've stayed at much better Holiday Inn Express locations than this one. While it looks decent at first, the whole place has some funny smell that I can't put my finger on, but that everyone in our group noticed. Also, while its nice to get a flat screen TV in the room, the selection of channels was extremely limited and NBC wasn't even working. Finally, they overbilled us and initially charged each of us a rate that was $20 higher than what I had reserved on the website.
Luckily I had my confirmation printout with me but apparently it was too much to make the change for four rooms right away so they offered to e-mail me the confirmations. However, as it approached noon, I had yet to receive the e-mail, so I called and was promised I would have it in 15 - 20 minutes.
More than an hour later, after returning from lunch, still no e-mail, so I called again and left a message for the accounting department at the hotel. That call was not returned and I tried calling again about 3:00 with no luck.
Thank goodness, I and my team had spent the day working in Walnut Creek only about a mile from the hotel as I was forced to stop back at the hotel and get printouts of our new receipts from the front desk.
At that time, I also noticed that they had not charged a single room to the actual credit card of the person who had stayed in the room. It's just a good thing that we were all at the same rate and nobody had watched any pay-per-view movies or made any room charges.
As a customer and a Gold Level Priority Club member, I was extremely disappointed in this hotel and we will be finding a different place to stay on our return to Walnut Creek. -

I expected much more from this brand, especially in Walnut Creek.
The service was barely mediocre, the area lacked amenities, and the hallways smelled like dirty gym socks.
The room was okay. As much as can be expected, with a nice view of a drainage ditch, some broken down cars at a garage, and a loading dock for some industrial building.
I would not choose this location again. -

We were skeptical about booking here based from old photos we saw and other reviews we read. This hotel is beautiful! Staff was super friendly and helpful. We missed out on breakfast because we left early. Hotel seemed quiet, there was a little freeway noise but nothing to be concerned about, and we didn't hear doors slamming at all night, or the elevator dinging. The shower was super hot, and it had a nice big head with lots of pressure. Bed was comfy and the pillows were great! If we ever find our self in the bay area again, we'd stay here again!

We wanted to stay somewhere outside of Berkeley but near Berkeley. Growing up I visited Walnut Creek many times since I had a cousin that lived here that we visited every summer. Coming to this hotel I realized I have no memory of what Walnut Creek really looked like. This hotel is right off the freeway. This is convenient, but makes for a great deal of noise from the highway. We arrived late (after 10pm) and the underground parking lot was crowded. There is only one elevator from the garage and we were lucky to find a relatively close spot. We drove all around the lot trying to find a good space because most of the spaces were very narrow and my bf hates door dings.
The room we got was all the way at the end of the hallway. Literally, we had to walk to the very end of the long angular hallway to get to our room. We could hear the cars on the freeway and it was actually soothing to hear the hum of the air conditioner. The room was the bare basics. My bf liked the water pressure in the shower, which was nice after a long full day in the city. We were up and out early, so we didn't check out the free breakfast. One observation while checking out was that this seemed to be a popular hotel for the older adult generation. We were the youngest people seen in the hotel. It was for the most part, a mediocre hotel. We both agreed that it wasn't horrible, but we have no intentions of returning. -

I chose the HI Express in Walnut Creek after trying to decide between a few other properties...Embassy Suites, Marriott, and this one. After reading a ton of reviews, both on Yelp and TripAdvisor, I felt this one was the best choice--price and location. I figured I wasn't going to be in my room that long anyway--just to sleep, shower, and eat.
For the most part, I was fairly impressed with this hotel. It had its basic necessities--a clean and decent size room, and the price was on the low end.
Pros:
- ok location, though would've been nice if it was closer to a grocery store
- free breakfast!! ...and the food's pretty good--the biscuits w/gravy
- definitely price (compared to nearby properties)
- friendly staff
Cons:
- if you happen to get a room on the 2nd floor rear side, it's a long walk to the front entrance
- limited transportation, a little far to the BART station
- rooms facing the freeway can be a little noisy
Overall:
I wouldn't mind staying here again for the price, but if it wasn't an issue, I'd probably stay at the Embassy Suites, simply because it's much closer to the BART station. -

The only thing happening here was the room was clean.
It is an older HIExpress and sure felt like it, especially for 160 +tx.
Saggy bed, old school 27" TV, cheap office chair, and manual high/low heater/ac. The good thing the heater was loud enough to block loud freeway noise. Breakfast carb bar did have those yellow omelates with processed cheese and sausage parties...wow! Coffee was tasteless. Next weeks work week visit will not be here!Comment from Roger L. of Holiday Inn Express Walnut Creek 2/17/2011

I won't say that I am a fan but, their services are more than mediocre , everything was clean, and the staff were friendly. The only thing that were weren't thrilled with was the placement next to the street. It was noisy and, for those of you who are light sleepers, this might be somewhat undesirable. Of course, if you wanted more higher end hotels, you should try Claremont Hotel or DoubleTree, but, for the price range that I have paid, which was around 94 dollars a night, during graduation week in Berkeley, it was more than what I would have asked for.
Its approximate distance to Brrkeley was about 12 miles, which takes around 16 minutes, assuming that there's no traffic and you're going at 75 miles per hour. Plus, the scenery along the drive was enchanting, as you're surrounded by different types of shrubs and greens, making it a very smooth and relaxing drive. Also, if you're around the place, you might as well try out a nearby restaurant, called Tullio's. That place is pretty good too.Comment from Roger L. of Holiday Inn Express Walnut Creek 5/20/2010

Very limited on-site parking at night. Tiny parking spaces. But there's enough street parking if you don't mind crossing the street.
Kinda old and tired looking.
Tell them you lost your room key and they'll happily give you one without checking ID.
Basic, basic cable, that is, no MTV, VH1, Discovery Channel, etc. Only news channels and Showtime.
Free Internet connection via Ethernet cable very spotty.
Not the best location in town but at least very close to I-680 on-ramp. -

Parking lot was so tiny, and people parked in 2 spaces.
I checked in smoothly. No problems.
I just wondering why it smelled so smokey. Like someone just lighted one up and was smoking right there in front of me. I didn't see any clouds of smoke. So I am wondering why, I kept smelling it.
If you don't mind smelling like smoke when you leave then go ahead and stay here.
Its close to the freeways, that is why I chose this place to stay at. -

Room was great! Loved the nice comfy bed and blue blanket at the foot of the bed!.... 3 stars because I was charged twice for this room. Did not received my money back from their mistake for about a month!

Flew up north for my birthday and have a friend that lives in Walnut Creek. I stayed two nights in one room at the Holiday Inn and one night in another of their room after coming back from Tahoe. Parking was easy in the back of the hotel, we also enjoyed using the free wireless internet. Didn't hear any noise in our first room the first two nights. The only noise we did hear was from the room next to us on the last night and it wasn't that bad. Didn't smell any smoke at all. The exercise facility is also open 24 hours which is also a plus. Overall our stay was pleasant and also really affordable using the Holiday Inn Friends & Family deal.

I had the guests for my wedding stay at this hotel. Since over 95% of the guests who were attending the wedding were coming from out of town, we wanted to provide a economical choice to reduce travel expenses for our guests and thusly choose Holiday Inn Express WC.
My initial experince with Cynthia Brazil, who WAS the sales manager was awful and basically caused tons of stress and drama. However she was subsequently replaced by Simone Shuttleworth who is super fabulous. she straightened out the mess that Cynthia created. Going WAY above and beyond. In fact, my mother was unable to attend the wedding and Simone sent her a "Get Well" card in the mail to my mom in the hospital out of state. Talk about service!!! You just dont get better than that.
Also, Luis, is wonderful and amazingly accomodating. He took excellent care of my family and friends.
Between Luis and Simone, they single-handedly turned a chaotic situation into a super pleasant experience to all of out of towm guests. I did call the hotel manager to let her know just how impressed we were. We have had guests call us back just to say how awesome they were! -

My son and I spent two nights here and found it to be very comfortable. Breakfast was good and the movie selections were current. Everything you need for sleeping accomodations and late night entertainment.

San Rafael, CA
The room smelled like smoke even though it was a non-smoking room. The room didn't have an ironing board although there was an iron. The phone didn't work in the room.
I don't think they cleaned the room very well. It felt like it needed a better cleaning. The parking lot was a little scary at night because it was really open. Although the parking was FREE which was a lot better than most of the hotels in the area.
I thought it was interesting that no one asked me how I enjoyed my stay. It seemed like they avoided the question because they knew that they weren't up to par. It felt like the staff and the hotel was really trying to improve itself but just couldn't quite get there!Comment from Roger L. of Holiday Inn Express Walnut Creek 5/20/2010

Actually, its a very nice hotel. Heated pool, hot breakfast, nice beds, hot showers. Everything you would want in a Holiday Inn Express. How did there get the one star rating? I think that the sales manager is a little crazy. You see, I am getting married soon, and many of the people coming to the wedding are from out of town. We thought this would be a nice place for them to stay. We met with the sales manager and agreed on a rate for our guests. She just had to run it by the GM. Five days later, no word. We left message after message for her. No return call. We called again, she answered, (by now we know her voice) she pretended that it wasn't her, and said "she" was in a meeting that "she" would have her call back. Hmmmm. Strange. Still no call back. Our guests don't get their calls returned. Finally they start booking directly with the front desk. What do you know, front desk clerk gives a lower rate. I would say just avoid the crazy sales manager. You might save some time.
