My family and I have stayed at this hotel in several configurations (wife and me; kids and me; wfe, kids & me) and it has been great every time.  The only weird thing is the underground parking, but space is at a premium, I suppose.  Wife and I spent Christmas eve and day at this hotel in 2007 and had an amazing time.  The hotel is just off the walking trail to Cannery Row and it's everything we expect from HI Express, which has come to be our favorite hotel chain.  Rooms are always comfy and clean.  We dig the complimentary wine & cheese time at the end of the day.  Yeah, it's boxed wine, but if you want something better, head out to Carmel Valley to one of the fantastic wineries there.

If you want to stay on Cannery Row, and you want to keep some money in your wallet for things like...oh...food, then check into the Holiday Inn Express. This clean, and quiet, and comfortable hotel is charming and is located in the heart of The Row. It's only a stone's throw away from a fantastic Antique Mall (if that's your taste) and a short walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They serve a breakfast in the morning (It's basic fare...but filling) and cheese and wine in the evening (don't know if it's any good). The best part is attached parking and friendly staff...and it won't break your budget.

This is what i get for not wanting too spend a little extra cash. Before you accuse me of being a cheap bastard, it was 11o'clock at night and we were just looking for a place to sleep for a few hours. The Holiday Inn Express is a bargain, especially considering it is so close to Cannery Row, but I couldn't look past the old potato chip under the desk or the mysterious container under the sofa. It also didn't help that when we opened up the sofa bed there were a couple of hairs on the sheets. If you want to save some money then this place is for you.

This is the quietest hotel we've ever stayed at. We did hear some street noise in the evening and night a little. But, we didn't see other people much at all. The area is very close, walking distance, to the touristy areas of Monterey. The Aquarium is the only thing worth a visit. The bike, walking trail runs directly in front of the hotel and would be nice to rent a bike and take a ride.
Wine and cheese hour was from 5:30-6:30. It was nice to have a drink (or 2) before dinner.
Breakfast was free, basic and the same as every other Holiday Inn.
We had friends over who also parked in the lot for free for a few hours.
Overall really good value.

We stayed here this past saturday and overall we had a good experience. Check-in was very fast and easy, it took about 3 minutes. There was a small underground parking lot that was full, and the attendant told us to park in the 10 minute parking in front of the hotel. It was $200 for the night... kinda pricey, but it is in walking distance of cannery row and the aquarium.

Our room was dated, but nice. If you walked around without your shoes, you feel that the floor is not flat. We got a nice corner room with partial views of the ocean. The carpet and tiles were pretty old, a refresh of the rooms would help.

The bed was pretty comfortable. The bathtub was shallow... The hot water came on instantly, which saves water, but wastes energy. Dunno which is worse. They supply basic toiletries if you forget any of them. We forgot toothpaste.

The staff was okay. When we checked in, a bunch of the attendant's buddies were hanging out outside the hotel. The morning crew wasn't the friendliest at the breakfast bar, but the checkout person was pretty friendly. Continental breakfast included toast, muffins, cereal, oatmeal (instant), juice, yoplait yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and some fruits. Not bad.
