6 reviews for Holiday Inn Express Hotels & Suites
I decided to drag the boy to San Diego for the weekend a few months ago so I could go outlet shopping and see They Might Be Giants at the Belly Up Tavern. And since I'm such a high roller, I booked us a room at the Holiday Inn. Look out!
So after we outlet shopped (I got a Calvin Klein suit for job interviews for $99!) we headed over to the hotel. I knew that the room had a "jacuzzi tub" but usually I don't really care about such things. But when we got in the room, we were shocked to see that the "jacuzzi tub" was a freaking jacuzzi. In the room. Not in the bathroom where tubs are supposed to be. Nope, it was sunken into the floor right across the room from the bed. Very weird, but we got a kick out of it and made a promise that we would try it out before we left.
We had dinner at the cute Italian place next door and then headed to the show that was a few blocks away. On the way there, it was dark and the streets were mostly empty. There was a guy that was walking toward us and after he passed us I realized that it was John Flansburgh! From TMBG! I almost didn't believe it, but when they came on stage at the Belly Up, he was wearing the same thing. Woo! And then he told a story about how he had to walk back to the hotel to make copies of the set list. Woo! They were staying at our hotel! I don't usually get star struck, but when you love a band for like two-thirds of your life, you get a little excited when you see them on the street being normal people.
So we went to the show and it was cool and I had a few drinks. The two stores that we passed on the way back were closed (Solana Beach seems to shut down early), so we hit the vending machines at the hotel for Munchies and cookies and Mountain Dew. And then were fired up the jacuzzi. Here's my tip to you: if you have a jacuzzi in your hotel room, don't dump several bottles of shampoo in and then fire it up. We ended up with a mountain of foamy bubbles so huge that we couldn't see each other anymore.
They offer a free breakfast in the morning like most (all?) Holiday Inn Express Hotels. So we went to the "breakfast room" to nosh on some cereal and eggs and fruit and coffee and juice. And cinnamon rolls and muffins. And then I realized that Dan Miller was sitting at one of the tables. And he looked older than I thought he was. But it didn't matter because it was Dan Miller of the TMBG Band of Dans (although there aren't enough Dans anymore to call them that). And then Dan left.
And then Flansburgh walked in and got some cereal. And he stood in the middle of the room eating his cereal, watching the Discovery channel. And I just stared, like totally starstruck to the max. Thank you, Holiday Inn Express, for a fabulous bubbly, TMBG-y weekend.

I stayed at the hotel because I went to the Belly Up Tavern. It was a wonderful stay. They have great customer service, clean property and sooo close to the Belly Up. I will stay again next time.
Great location in Solana Beach. The place itself is a bit grim and has an institutional feel (and smell). They do serve a breakfast in a communal room. We stuck with the fresh fruit and yogurt. There is a little refrigerator and microwave in the room. The staff was wonderful. We needed to fax and they made it happen. There are many restaurants in the vicinity and the Cedros furniture district is nearby.

Very nice location, staff was very friendly. Would have given 5 stars but my room layout was kinda weird, it had the hot tube jammed in a corner and in the opposite corner was the refrigerator and microwave. I t just seemed like a odd layout.

I couldn't believe I was at a holiday inn! You can't beat the location and it was actually nicer than some "higher end" hotels I have stayed in. The staff was pleasant.
Like andrea d., i made the trek down here to see a band. I actaully drove from Tucson, and after staying at Hotel Congress, this place was like paradise! I paid less than $10 more for the night and was treated to 2 huge (instead of 2 tiny) beds, a fridge and microwave, TV!, a balcony (no view, but at least I had an ocean breeze), strong shower, free breakfast in the morning, 2 blocks from the beach and a short walk to the Belly Up Tavern. No noise. Solana Beach is a pretty nice town and I will definitely visit the Belly Up (and stay the night here) if an opportunity arises.
