Just stayed here for two nights last weekend and had an overall good experience. It was the best deal I could find for the Santa Barbara area that was also pet-friendly. They charge $10/per pet/per night. They said their max was 3 pets per room. However, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know if you had a pet or not. It's not like they really check. So save yourself some dough and lie!

The 420 SF rooms are pretty spacious for 6 people. There are two queen beds and a full-sized pull out couch. We had 5 people and 3 dogs which was probably max capacity without having to step all over each other. Bathrooms were fully stocked with enough towels and toiletries. The front desk was prompt with any other requests such as a cork opener and an extra blanket.

Breakfast was included which is always great to have as an option. It's just your normal continental breakfast - yogurts, cereal, fruit, cinnamon rolls, breads, eggs, and biscuit with gravy. Their dining facilities were always well-stocked and roomy for all of their guests with an outdoor patio to eat with your pets. The dining room gets pretty packed around 8:30 so I suggest you get there early or get some grub and bring it back to your room.

We tried out the spa jacuzzi and it was just your normal warm bubble bath. But it was nice at 9:30 p.m. to soak your tired muscles. The pool/spa area is pretty dark at night.. there are no added lights except for the lights inside of the pool & spa. So it was easy to sneak in some glasses of wine while we relaxed. It says the pool & spa closes at 10 but being the renegades that we are, we stayed until past 10:30.

The grounds are nice. Free parking and lots of grass area for the dogs. They even offer poopy bags. Very close off the 101. Carpinteria State Beach is walking across the way and is walking distance. Downtown (State St.) Santa Barbara is only 12 miles away. Free wi-fi which is a plus.

Don't expect anything frou frou. Pretty much gives you all the basics and a few perks. It's a great place when you're traveling with a pet and on a budget.

Front desk staff were not nice at all.
Breakfast mediocre.
Rooms were spacious and beds quite confortable.
Pillow? Horrible.
Out A/C was making some funny noises and being a light sleeper it was not the  best night.
The bath tub faucet was missing a piece, I could see the hose that the water was coming from.
Hallway was quite dirty.
Huh anything else?  I got a good deal and also its very close to less crowded beaches and walking trails.
Easy direction from the freeway.  Grocery store and restaurants  in walking distance.
Overrall, nice and quiet location.

We've been coming to this same hotel for many years, dating back to when it wasn't a Holiday Inn Express. I think it was Comfort Inn. It's predictable in a good way. Like knowing what will be at the breakfast downstairs and that the bathroom will have packets for removing the tar stuck to your feet from the local beach. The staff is friendly and the WiFi connection is free. I don't think I've ever been in the pool. Hey, we go there for the beach.

Try to avoid the holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day if you can because the rates jump for those days. We like to try to get a room facing away from the freeway because we like fresh air and the freeway noise isn't good with open windows. We have wet suits that we like to drip dry, and there is one room that has a place where we can hang them. Occasionally, we've been lucky enough to get it.

It's always been a good place for that weekend to go be mellow in a California beach town.

the best thing you can do for any pet lover is to welcome their pets into your facilities with open arms. at this holiday inn express hotel, i felt the warm squeeze of love and doggy acceptance because i can finally take a vaykay with my puppy in tow. for an extra $20 per night, you can bring your loyal companion with you and have him enjoy hotel amenities as well as provide him with a different environment to have accidents in.

a nice, semi private-ish beach is within walking distance from the hotel. here you can romp with your pet or gawk at semi attractive surfers catching a wave. the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. the facility was clean and spacious. my room was big with a huge window overlooking their garden. i woke up early and had their continental breakfast which went beyond the typical toast and stale muffins.

12 miles away from santa barbara and much cheaper than many s.b. hotels with the ADDED plus of being pet friendly, this holiday inn will be bookmarked for future vaykays with my pup. "woof woof" howls my beagle in agreement.

I never knew there was such a thing as a studio suite, a seating area separated by a low divider. I thought a suite was two rooms, otherwise its just a hotel room.

Turns out that Holiday Inn Express is a studio suite hotel. That's why it was some $40 cheaper a night than the suite hotel up the road in Santa Barbara. I live and learn.

Otherwise, it was a nicely appointed hotel with very comfortable beds, quiet HVAC system and good bath amenities.

Continental breakfast room was well stocked and kept clean. Front desk staff very courteous and helpful.

Very accessible from 101 and Carpinteria Beach is near by.

I am in Santa Barbara quite often for work and I always try to stay at the Holiday Inn Express (Hotel Virginia) on Haley but sometimes that place is booked up or just too much for my expense account so I find myself on the other side of the 101 at the Carpineria Holiday Inn Express.   The Location sure isn't special.   You are walking distance from such exotic hard to find restaurants like Outback Steak House.  Although you can hitch a cab to State street for about $20.  The rooms here are very basic.  Clean Beds, tiny outdated, but clean bathrooms, oh yeah I couldn't get the Internet to work in my room which is a big problem.  The reason I only gave this place three stars is because it is so freaking loud there, and I'm a deep sleeper.  The windows are so thin you could hear everybody walking around that place.
I wanted to give this place higher marks because the staff is really nice, and very helpful.  I won't be staying here again unless the place goes under some serious renovation but even then that won't fix the location.

I was impressed again by a Holiday Inn Express - this was a nice, clean location with a good continental breakfast and hotel amenities. For what it is, a five star -  I can't really detract any stars, everything was nice and we'd stay there again.

Positives:
* Computers in the lobby - I came in and posted a Yelp review with ease after I got the terribly secret password.
* Good continental: Offerings were yogurt cups (yay, individual low fat ones - not fat free but hey I'm not complainin'), apple sauce cups (without added sugar, bonus), eggs, toast/english muffins/bagels, jam/PB/cream cheese, warm cinnamon buns, cereals, fresh fruit (Bananas, apples), individual oatmeals, juice/coffee/milk.
* Exercise room: two treadmills, elliptical, exercise bike. Fairly good quality stuff, but the Precor elliptical I used has seen better days. Nice touch: cooler of filtered water.
* Bathroom products: Really nice stuff at this chain - separate shampoo and conditioner (with some odd almost cinnamon scent), soaps, mending stuff, shower cap and all the regular stuff. Nice touch (new to me) were some "Tar off" packets for if you drop grease on your shirt. I took one to test out the next time I spill crap on myself.
* Quiet location, and again close to the 101. I could hear trucks on occassion, but generally quite quiet and we were on the side facing the highway. Not quite close enough to walk to the beach (it might take 30 minutes or a bit less?)  Downtown stretch is only a 10 or so minute walk, if that.
* Clean - the room was really quite spotless, and the bathroom smelled really nice whatever they sprayed in there. And it lasted.

Didn't use:
* Pool/hot tub: outdoor pool/hot tub looked sooo nice, but we were too late to use it and wanted to leave early. Shame.

Things to improve:
* Desk staff wasn't the friendliest when we checked in - she kind of seemed to dislike or job or wasn't in the friendliest mood. But she was quick.

Will add pictures to accompany this review :)

In the never ending search for an affordable, available hotel in the general vicinity of Santa Barbara (without driving all the way to Ventura), this Holiday Inn Express was a great find!  The rooms are clean and spacious.  The front desk attendants were friendly and highly patient with drunk guests returning from whatever number of bachelorette parties were probably happening in SB. We saw this location in http://expedia.com and when it went away we called and they were able to hook us up with three rooms at the price listed on expedia!  I know they include a continental breakfast but I can't comment because we didn't wake up in time.  We will definitely look into staying here again.
