This was a really nice hotel, at a VERY reasonable price. Free parking, free amenities, and a really nice room was everything I desired (and more). The ONLY three complaints I have are:

a) during I was at the hotel, there was construction going on... my room constantly blacked out - kind of annoying
b) they do offer free wireless, but it's sorta slow at times
c) the breakfast they offered wasn't that great... mostly cereal, cinnamon rolls, and other limited food

HOWEVER, this place still rocked. They gave me a hefty discount for my power troubles, and I can tell this place is going to really shine once the construction is over. And, wireless range can't be perfect, so can't really blame the hotel.

All in all, a great find, especially for someone on a tight budget.

Holiday Inn's "Express" product is uneven across locations.
Bekeley = ****
Salinas(!) = *****
Both the above were purpose built as HI Exes,
This location:
A retrofit from some other motel incarnation.
Exterior hallways, not a fan.
No nuke or dorm fridge. Really?
Easily the smallest Express room I've stayed in.
I WAS given a room away from the freeway side... I put that down to the V.I.P. treatment I get with my Priority Rewards account.

All that said, the front counter staff was friendly and when you're traveling on state business, the room rate allowances pretty severely
restrict your choices in a place like Monterey.

This cute little hotel is right on Roberts Lake, near the border of Seaside and Monterey. Five minutes from Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, and historic downtown Monterey. A friendly staff hooked me up with great restauraunt recommendations (and a free fancy razor!)

Excellent where it counts: value, comfort, location, and cleanliness. I look forward to coming back.

It's bad enough that the rooms at this Holiday Inn are small, but try living in one with your parents for THREE MOTHERFUCKING DAYS.

That being said, our rooms were recently renovated with new furniture, bathroom fixtures, and Aquos LCD TVs. So it was like staying the white trash equivalent of a W hotel, only without the fuckable busboys, West Elm Fall/Winter collection, overpriced room service, and nouveau riche holier-than-thou condescension of the other guests. Also, props to this Holiday Inn for providing FREE WiFi, which is more than I can say for a lot of "better" hotels (FUCK YOU, HYATT!)

I did find it strange that the complimentary tin of mints was supplied by the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Yes. I know, I know, corporate partnerships are par for the course, but fuck, first of all I hated watching Forest Gump and wanted to gouge my eyes out with the blunt edge of Tom Hanks' talent. Second of all, I'm highly allergic to crustaceans so when I saw the mints and that simpering shrimp cartoon logo grinning at me (http://www.anne-und-se...) all I could think of was DEATH FROM ANAPHYLAXIS which, frankly, is preferable to suffering through the fucked up misadventures of a moron for 120 minutes.

Speaking of fucked up, my parents shared one bed while I tucked myself into the other. If this doesn't sound unusual, please remember that both my parents are my height, around 200lbs each, and the bed was a TWIN.

So they were getting "cozy" and, frankly, I was getting uncomfortable.

Dad: Hey Ma? I luurrrve you.
Mom: Oh shut up.
Dad: Ma, give me a kiss.
Me: What the fuck is going on here?
Dad: Darin, can't I kiss my loving wife?
Me: Okay, whatever happens PLEASE DON'T HAVE SEX WITH EACH OTHER. I'm fucked up as it is and don't need more therapy.

Good times. And now I'm alone again.

I spent all my time here hoping beyond hope that I wasn't masturbating in the same bed that Darin I's parents did the nasty in...

This Holiday Inn Express is probably nice when there aren't a bunch of rowdy teenagers running around the place. I wouldn't know. I'm writing this from inside the room right now, where we've been trapped for over an hour, trying to keep Little Q asleep. I already had words with the coach of the girls tennis team that is staying on our floor and the one above. The very same girls that are being actively pursued by the boys baseball team staying on the first floor.

Sound travels readily through the front door, along with the cold, bitter wind that was howling when we got into town. Our room shakes with reverberations every time one of the girls squeals and jumps for joy on either side of us. Thank god they recently renovated this place, I shudder to think what plaster would be flying off of the walls if they hadn't. However, I'm not sure any seismic retrofit took this level of chaos into account. If I don't post another Yelp review within 48 hours, don't bother sending a search party, it will be too late for me.

I'm hoping I'm up early enough to beat them to the free continental breakfast in the morning to douse the frosted flakes with metamucil and the yogurt with ex-lax.

UPDATE: The Morning After: Holiday Inn Express redeemed itself with one simple thing: advance purchase of tickets for the Monterey Bay Aquarium at the front desk.

I'm actually posting this review from the hotel right now!

We were looking for an inexpensive hotel near the Aquarium, and decided on this place.

News of construction had us a little worried, but there's nothing going on except some minor outside painting.

Every room has been redone with nice decor, granite, etc.  Great beds, comfy linens, choice of pillows.  Fairly complete continental breakfast buffet.

It's not the Ritz, but for the price, this HIExp has exceeded my every expectation.

Free wifi too!

Budget hotels are comfier than you think.

I booked this place while in Monterey Bay for a wedding.  I didn't have high hopes for this place and maybe that's what made it all the more  satisfying.  I booked it because of the price, distance from the wedding location, and convenience to the freeway.  Not only did I get a good price but I also a good night's sleep.

Located only 2 miles away from the hub of Cannery Row, it is convenient to freeways, shopping, and restaurants.  The hotel staff was very friendly and the room we stayed was renovated in a contemporary style.  Preferring firmer beds to those of the lumpy, soft persuasion, I found my bed to be incredibly comfortable and had a full night's sleep.  No back aches here.  They also offer a full continental breakfast and was pleased to see warm cinnamon roles, eggs, cereal, milk and juices, and fruit.  Not to mention, the much needed cup of coffee.

I would definitely stay here again!

a couple days before i went on my valentine get away i was quite nervous in what rooms i would be getting seeing how reviews from all sites say that the rooms are too small, this and that.  When i got there, we easily fit four people in the room.  Over all this was a pretty good place and worth the money.  I would definitely come back the next time i am in Monterey.
