We stayed here on reward points, I highly recommend Holiday Inn's Priority club, the perks add up really fast. We get automatic room upgrades every time we check in.
Parking: PARK NEXT DOOR in the private lot for $20
Room: Nice clean up to date... would have liked a big thick blanket.
Bar: Friendly staff, my drink was poured well, but not stiff.
Neighborhood: Sketchy, walk over to 5th St for all the yuppie stores
Staff: Really helpful.
View: Good, could see Market street really well.
Why not 5... the price in cash is outrageous, use points, neighborhood make ya think twice, and in house parking is outta sight.
So after chillin at the Holiday Inn...I'm gonna have to say I understand why rappers choose this place to sing about over all the other "low class" motels. Clean and surprisingly not ghetto (just ghetto fabulous really).
My gripes:
- $35 dollar parking for hotel guests and randoms not staying there but the only diff is hotel guests can park 12 hours longer?!? Lame.
- Housekeeping, we said NO, so don't come back in 30 minutes.
- $150 for what? Lame. Overpriced $F wins again...

WE CAME....
WE SAW... [2 beds, balcony, sort of view]
WE CONQUERED... [3 handles, 1 fifth, multiple Faderades, 2 quarts OJ, 1 Sparks, 500+ dixie cups]

Whatchu doin? Nothing chillin at the Holiday Innnnnnnnnn....
Dear housekeeper,
You came in at 9AM, and saw that the 8 of us were obviously all passed out. You obviously stayed on the same floor, cleaning the nearby rooms. what makes you think that within 45 minutes, our sloppy asses would have been able to wake up, clean up, and check out? I guess you didn't think of that though.
But thank you anyways for the room; two beds, and a mini balcony overlooking....nothing.. You charge quite a lot, but I guess its San Francisco, what can I really expect?
While we're on the subject, why do you think that knocking once and giving us two whole seconds is more than enough time for us to answer the door. its 9AM....it takes me 30 seconds to realize that someone's knocking at the door. But yet you insist on barging in a whole two seconds after you LIGHTLY knock the door. What if I had been shaving my pubes off in the hallway?
Anyways, thanks for a roof and the beds, and keeping the room neat and clean.
Sincerely,
-Eric C.
P.S. Sorry for the hundreds of paper dixie cups and empty bottles of alcohol all over.
P.P.S. There's vomit in the trash can next to the balcony. I have no idea how it got there.
Tear it down, fire most the staff, start over... Just a thought...
So why 3 stars and not 2? or 1 even?
Well there were bright spots and if you connect the bright spots it was enough to pull the abyss in to the dim glow of a 3 star review...
Expect little, get less, run for the door...
Steven checked me in, wow not good! I have traveled 150 plus nights a year for 7 years now, I think that qualifies me as a professional traveler, and he is one of the worst! I have stayed in areas where the front desk staff was really bad, but I could understand because of lack of education or cultural differences, here in San Fran Steven did not strike me as stupid or culturally bereft... He had attitude from the first word, when I asked him to look up my priority club number he told me he could not and said he would give me a toll free number to figure it out for myself, (That was a first, never had someone do that before(Later in the same evening another employee I believe Mark was perfectly able willing and happy to look it up without any question))... Reality-there were two people behind the desk and I was the only person checking in; Steven was unhappy and lazy and projecting those negatives on me, No Thank You Steven! As I walked away the girl behind the counter shot me an understanding smile, I asked her name and thanked her for smiling and mentioned hope was in the air!
The room was a dump, I had mixed experiences at the breakfast which is $18.00 I think, yeah, well all I will say is after the many ineptitudes of the over worked understaffed over priced feeding room, the manager of the restaurant sent me an unsolicited fruit plate and card with apologies, the volley of ineptitude and happiness continued, bar good, bell bad, front desk on front desk off, but all in all, I will most likely avoid this property in the future...
My convention hotel was all booked up, Darn those last minute bookings!
I believe this place is still open during construction. There is plastic everywhere. Here is a quick review of my somewhat recent experience here:
The good: The room was more than decent. It was a good sized, clean, and had two large beds. And the best part was that even though there were two beds, only one was used. And well, that's always good, right?
Well, unless I staying alone, which yeah, I totally did.
The bad: Check in was hell because, the bald Asian guy, named Julio for some reason, seemed to not know how to work the computer and huge line formed. No one else came to help out with line. And worst of all, we needed our room key to park in their garage.
Did I say we? I mean, I needed the room key.
The ugly: Parking in their garage is a whopping $30 or so. San Francisco can be lame like that. But to charge your paying customers that much to stay in the garage is ludicrous. Parking in the adjacent lot is pretty safe and costs like $10 less. So my friend, I mean, I was able to save some money on parking.
But still, why does parking need to be so damn in the San Francisco?
Lame.
So yeah, it's a decent place to stay, except for the parking situation.
Not sure what happened with these folk's rooms or expectations (if you want Kimptonesque quality, then that's where you need to book a room) but my stay was quite pleasurable. My check in was quick and painless (added bonus points for explaining the hotel incidental pre-auth charge because though I am familiar with this practice from staying in hotels myself I know others may not be). Hotel was clean, my room (one bed King Smoking) was great. The room didn't smell like a smokers broom closet which I appreciated. Bathroom spotless. The sink appeared to have a very slight water pressure issue but was barely noticeable. And I also had a small balcony.
Regarding the area...yes public transportation is very close. Blocks away from the main shopping thoroughfare. Now the people...how can I describe some of the people. Remember the HBO "documentaries" where they would follow crackheads around for a month while they panhandled, tweaked and did a Thriller dance off crack/meth/heroin? Well folks that hatched from the same egg mill about in the area. The Civic Center UN plaza is to be avoided. Nice name...but its a festering boil on the azz of man.
Oi. I'm so happy that I didn't have to pay for this hotel room. I'm back in town for a weekend long meeting at UCSF and the location is good -- just a hop away from BART and MUNI but still, not an excuse for seriously lackluster hotel rooms, basic cleanliness, and a questionably unsafe neighborhood. I'm not sure *what the hell* is going on in the "lobby" -- odd and labyrinth like "Asian" theme, out of order bathrooms and obnoxiously slow and vocal (don't ask) elevators. The room is small and basic but the bathroom is absolutely disgusting with a moldy shower curtain, rusted fire sprinkler, and a tiny little sink with the requisite plastic Holiday Inn cups. The alarm clock is ancient and the walls stained, the balcony scary and rickety, the lights headache inducing.
But they have free red delicious apples in the lobby...no, not even a small token to make up for moldy shower curtains! Where's my Kimpton!?
this was my third visit to the holiday inn for pride weekend. i choose this hotel every year because it's cheap and located right by the festival and i can watch the parade hungover from my balcony sunday morning. and it's a block away from the bart and muni.
they've redone the lobby and it looks really nice. the people up front are super friendly and help you when you need it. my dollar got eaten by the coke machine and they sent two waters up to my room free of charge. they also hooked me up with a cabby one night and can always be reached for what you need.
the housekeeping ladies were my favorite though. always chatting with me in the hallways and offering up soaps and towels and never seemed bothered by my disorderly room.
the rooms themselves are rather crummy - they're very out of date and need some renovating like the lobby. i mean it's 2009 get some flat screens already! the beds were very soft and comfy though, and so were the pillows. free internet is def a plus. their room service isn't bad either.
overall, i'd recommend this as a place to stay during pride weekend.
This was my second time using this Holiday Inn. I utilize them for producers who need to travel to SF for shoots or I did until this most recent experience.
More than a week out I called and booked two hotel rooms over the phone, put down a card to hold it and requested a cc authorization form. Got form, filled it out and sent back with photo ID front back of card all that. Called and got confirmation that it was received. DONE or so I thought.
Today was the day my guests checked in and about 9:30PM I get an e-mail from one of them telling me that there is no credit card on file and they have nothing in the reservation. What?!
I didn't get this information until 11:24pm fine - no problem just call up and see what happened.
Call, provide first and last name of one guest and put on hold for about five mins. He comes back "so what was that name" provide name second time - loooooong silence. me - sir are you finding the reservation? oh yes but nothing is on file...
puts me on hold for the second time -- five mins. ---
Ok, so next guest, he says. Um, well we didn't come up with a reasonable solution to the first problem guest so we really can't move on...
He proceeds to question me about where I sent the credit card authorization form, how long ago, did i receive confirmation....
I finally gave up and requested a manager.. he is the manager -effffffff
He proceeded to tell me that I must have not sent it or that it never made it.
Honestly, I CAN NOT WAIT to get into the office tomorrow and prove that jerk wrong. He called me a liar or his staff liars.
none of which is really the point - the point is they clearly do not have a system to approve this kind of transaction and I will never ever be sending my producers there again. I vaguely remember this happening the first time I used them and speaking with their third party billing center and they just kind of get to things when they get to them. So if you're in the market for a hassle and potential embarrassment for your clients since the third party billing will not be set up correctly then this is the place for you! otherwise spend the few dollars more and save yourself the headache.
3 Stars for the Service.
This hotel was a bargain because of Hotwire. For $69 a night you get what you pay for which is outdated rooms, yucky bathrooms and a bad neighborhood. Luckily, when in San Francisco we rarely are in a hotel room. If you are on a no-frills trip this is the place. The neighborhood is very shady as well and there was no way to have normal water temperature while taking a shower.
3 stars for the great housekeeping who did the best they can to keep our rooms tidy and for the front desk who moved our reservation from one room without a view to one with. If you are a penny pincher this is the place. However, I like to feel like I am on a vacation and when my home is cleaner than a professionally cleaned hotel, that just isn't kosher.
Short Version: For business, it's fine.
Long Version: I was in town for business and was put up here. As far as accommodations go, everything here was fine. I wasn't here for the view or the nightlife. If I was, then this might have been a bummer. But if you're in town for work, this place will do fine. The staff was really friendly, as a matter of fact. Watch out for the middle elevator, though. I was with a group and we all jumped in it at the same time as it was moving. Great for a laugh but when the doors opened, the elevator was half a foot lower than the floor, so you may want to use the other two, for safety.
OK, the hotel itself was OK. The surrounding area? NOT SO OK!
I stayed here for about 4 days while attending a conference at the nearby Convention Center. The amenities and facilities were quite nice, actually. The lobby was very tired traveller-friendly, and the staff was welcoming.
HOWEVER, I'm sorry to say this, but this hotel has GOT to relocate! The area is way too sketchy for any out-of-towners to cruise about. The FIRST NIGHT I got there, upon returning to the hotel from dinner at a nearby restaurant, I witnessed an arrest on the street - AN ARREST!
Turns out that the area just above the hotel is the infamous "Tenderloin" - the drug and crime capital of SF. After about 24 hours, I lost count of the number of addicts that crept up and scared the sh*t out of me on the street.
When I think about all the running I did after dusk around the area, my knees start to feel achy...
Honestly, I'd give this place 2.5 stars if I could. Since Yelp doesn't allow for it, I'll be a bit generous and round up.
Now, first off, this hotel is located south of Market and near the XXX Tenderloin, so expect to see some interesting characters on the street like dude who keeps all of his belongings in the newspaper vending machine and punk rock chick that pushes an old lady shopping cart and wears boots similar to those of the bad guys in Back to the Future 2. It's not the place for retired midwesterners with while sneakers and fanny packs to set up shop while in SF. It is close to the BART stop though and Market Street has the option of bus, streetcar or cab, so you can get the heck away from the hotel using various modes of transport.
Ghetto location aside, this hotel was mainly substandard in regards to its customer service. Now I've worked in customer service/hospitality and I don't think it's setting the bar too high to request that when giving directions the staff use terms like "left" and "right" instead of just gesturing to places behind you. Getting two forks so that my sister and I could eat our take-home dessert took more effort than it should have as we were shuffled from room service to the front desk to the restaurant to the bar and back to the restaurant again, each time getting the distinct impression that we were the hot potato being passed from staff member to staff member.
Another issue I had was with the smell. When we checked in, the smell of fish permeated the lobby, the elevators and was even faintly present on the 11th floor. The following day, I don't think the smell was that of fish, but of something else I couldn't quite pinpoint. There's a restaurant in the lobby, which explains where the smell comes from, but c'mon, exhaust fans anyone?
The room was fine, pretty clean and in good condition. Amenities include the standard iron/ironing board and hairdryer and throws in a safe as well. No refrigerator though, so no taking home leftovers for late night snacks. The water pressure in the shower was pretty weak though and made for unsatisfactory bathing experiences.
In all, this hotel is fine if you're comfortable with the area, don't think you'll need any assistance from the hotel staff and prefer to take baths over showers.
umm the room was good, the view was of a wall and a patio from a building, not what i like to call breath taking.
It was OK - just ok you ask?
Sort of better than ok, it was nice and clean, quite, central to what I needed, nice staff, good food, safe parking.
Ok so the area was a little less than desired but I did not feel unsafe or afraid to venture out at any time... and that says alot from a guy from a smaller city.
So it was OK...

I stay at this hotel every time I'm in San Fran for a number of reasons.
1. It's clean
2. It's not outrageously priced at $90/night for San Fran
3. It's easy to hop on the metro on Market and get to the cable cars which every tourist invariably wants to do and I'm usually there acting touristy
4. It's close to the club we usually are in town to go see DJ's at.
5. I get airmiles for staying here.
Other than that, it's pretty generic. Bonus points for having a starbucks on the corner though.
3.5 actually. . .i can't quite give it 4 stars tho-----
for a "reasonably" priced hotel close to SOMA this is a decent choice. the rooms are ok ( i've paid a lot more at other places and the room was barely large enough to fit the bed). parking is available for guests, and BART is right around the corner.
this is an urban area folks so common sense safety rules apply. this isn't a 5 star place (and doesn't pretend to be).
props to the hardworking bellhops, maids, and the nice reservation clerks.
