    Been here twice now and I have to say it's a solid burger, especially by LA standards. Every place you go to in LA is trying to reinvent the burger :cough: Umami :cough: ...and sometimes you just want the original done right.

    That's what's good about here. They stick to what's good about a burger while adding it's own personal flares. They stick to a kind of Counter style system where you fill out a form with a burger patty of your choice (meat, turkey, etc.), bun (wheat, white, PRETZEL!), condiments, type of cheese (pepperjack, etc.), mayo (chipotle, etc.), extras (bacon, avocado...$1 extra each). The burger without anything extra is $8.95. Not super cheap but reasonable price. Fries are a couple bucks extra too...they have sweet potato.

    They also have a homemade ketchup, which is actually kind of disgusting. It's almost funny b/c I feel like everyone knows how bad it is. For this reason, I chose to ignore it in my star rating.

    The one thing to note is that while the pretzel bun is really good, it's also very heavy and can take away from the burger. I think next time I go, I'd get it without because you really can't appreciate the burger. It is a good burger too...not the best thing I ever ate, but one of the best in LA for sure.

    Note: CASH ONLY

    My husband and I have been looking for "THE" burger joint since we moved into the area, and based on the great reviews, we thought we'd give it a try.

    First, they definitely call it "Hole in the Wall" for a reason, it's extremely difficult to find if you aren't already familiar with the area. It is tucked behind a Winchell's donut and even when you do find it the restaurant is extremely tiny with mostly outdoor seating.

    The manager/owner greeted us upon entry and was very pleasant and helpful, offering his recommendations about the food.

    The burgers were a good size and tasted pretty good. I got a burger on their signature pretzel bun with provolone cheese and cranberry mayo. The bun was soft and really complimented the other flavors well. The fries were crispy and tasted great with their in house ketchup.

    CONS:
    * cash only and while there is an ATM in the store it, of course, charges you 2 dollars to withdraw.
    *no fountain drink options and one can of soda is 2 dollars.
    * no small bites options for kids. The regular burgers are way too big for a toddler and they offer no alternative. I normally don't expect restaurants to cater to children but this is an all american burger joint, they should have at least one thing for kids on the menu to make it a but more family friendly.

    All this to say, I have no complaints about the burger but I wasn't in love with it either.   If I happened to be hungry and in the area I would stop by, but I think our search for the perfect burger continues.

    CAVEAT: This place is cash only.

    This burger had been hyped up to me by some co-workers that brought me here for lunch. While I loved the "build your own burger" idea of the place, the burger just didn't deliver the punch I was expecting. It was certainly good, but not worth the $15 I paid for the burger with a VERY small serving of sweet potato fries. Maybe a different burger is in order if I return, but I won't be dying to come back any time soon with all of the amazing options in this town.

    The best burger in west LA, and maybe the best burger I've ever had. The CLEAR winner in the premium burger race that is so prevalent in LA. Clearly better than father's office and Umami. A little pricey for a burger but its the same as those guys.

    Delicious! the pretzel bun is a must. So is the chipotle mayo! My burger was cooked a perfect medium and it was so ginormous and juicy. I loved every bite. But it was quite messy to eat. As much as I tried to let the juices drip straight onto the wrapper/table, it still kept on going down my hand. My rings unfortunately got dirty. I've never seen a burger drip this much in my life. Never.

    I would definitely come back again, sans any jewelry on my hands!

    Eh, if you want a good burger just go to In n Out.

    Not saying the burger tasted like crap, it was okay but it's not an everyday burger in my opinion. It was a bit pricey in my opinion.

    The place is really a hole in the wall. It's listed on Santa Monica but you can't see it from the front. You have to walk to the side of the donuts shop to actually see the place. It's a tiny place with two of it's own parking spots.

    We got the pretzel bun with everything plus the sauteed mushrooms.  it was soooooooooooooooooooo good.  Seriously, i would come back here more often if i can.

    The patty was a bit oilier than i would have liked, but a burger will always be a burger.

    Their homemade ketchup is amazing.  The color may not be as enticing as "their" (as in the market) ketchup, but the taste is to kill for.

    The fried were good too.  Slightly on the fat side, just the way i like them.  I love fat fries.

    The burgers are huge so eating only half of it made me super full.  Of course, i could've finished the whole thing because it was just that good even if i would've felt like crap if i did.

    seriously, stop reading this review and go now!
    and while you're at it, bring me a burger, kthx ;)

    WARNING: this is a greasy burger! If you don't like grease, not the place for you. It's a dive burger joint with a gourmet twist. The pretzel buns are delicious. I liked the chipotle mayo. They make their own ranch and ketchup. You can taste the freshness of them. The burger is big, filling, and tastes great!

    I'll come back for sure! I would even recommend it to my friends. I was on the fence between a four and five star rating. But I have to go with four...

    Here's why: Hole in the Wall is too much of a dive to pay $28 for two burgers and two fries. It's literally located in the back of a strip mall, it's small with not much seating, and it's meant to be a greasy spoon. Now, it's one of the freshest and best tasting greasy spoons that I've had. Imagine a gourmet greasy spoon and that pretty much sums it up.

    This burger joint was good.  My turkey burger was huge, the lettuce fresh, the buns was heated, only that the french fries were over cooked making it too dry.

    The place is small and behind a strip mall where it's hard to find.  Parking is tough in that area.  Too many cars and not enough parking spots.

    The price of the burger is a bit expensive.  8.95 for a burger while you choose the kind of meat patty which could be turkey, chicken, or beef.  Add a fried egg 1.00, french fries at 2.75 for a small bag, and 1.50 for a can or bottle beverage.  So, when you add up the total... it's not cheap!  I rather go to 'In N Out' instead.  I can't really complain about this place because it's well kept, the place is clean, and there are a lot of guys cooking in the back.  It's located at a busy location.  So I could probably understand the reason for the food to be more expensive.

    Anyhow, yes I would come back once in awhile.  It's worth it.  But just too much traffic.

    My favorite burger joint ever. I have not yet found another place that tops Hole in the Wall, and please, Umami's mini gourmet burgers can't compete against these monstrous, man burgers. Totally worth every cent, considering that you're given all sorts of customizable options - from the meat to the bun, and every other dressings.

    They even provide homemade ketchup and ranch.

    Just can't beat this place.

    Before this place opened, it used to be a cupcake shop. My sister lives really close by, so I would come and visit her and sometimes eat here.

    In the beginning, the burgers were AMAZING. I don't eat beef, so I'd get the turkey burger and it would always be so good!

    * Turkey Burger
    * Whole wheat bread
    * Pepperjack Cheese
    * Lettuce
    * Tomatoes
    * Chipotle Mayo
    * Red Onion
    And a side of sweet potato fries

    Then all of the sudden... the quality went down with each time I went. I was really was disappointed in that. When I ate my turkey burger, it had a weird after taste... And just the flavors itself did not taste good to me. I was really disappointed.

    Sweet potato fries were alright. Their ranch dressing is amazing. Their special ketchup is alright.

    NOTES:
    * Street parking (and limited)
    * CASH only

    I have to say, my burger was absolutely incredible, one of the tastiest burgers I have ever consumed. Cooked perfectly medium rare, with a delicious tasting patty, awesome caramelized onions, yummy bacon, and a pretzel bun that was absolutely fantastic. The bun had me lamenting the fact that I had never before experienced one! It held up great under my juicy burger and all it's delicious accouterments.

    If you're in the Los Angeles area you NEED to have this burger. Seriously, it's fantastic. If this joint was in my hood I would be hitting it once a week for damn sure, it's that good.

    PS - do not eat this in your car..... it has a Potent smell that will linger for days!  ( eat it in a friends car ) or if you are in a rental like I was, u should be fine.  Let them deal with the odor.

    Delicious. And I'm only basing this review off of one burger (because it'll most likely be what I eat in my future visits). I came here ordered the spicy chicken burger (ground chicken), with pepper jack cheese, sauteed mushrooms, red leaf lettuce, garlic mayo, on a pretzel bun. It was big, tasty, and juicy...just how I like it.

    However, the only thing that disappoints is the price. I spent $12 and some change for a burger and a can soda. Fries would of been an additional $2.50...no thanks!!

    If you're reading the address, be forewarned that this location can be completely misleading, due to the fact that the actual restaurant is behind Winchelle's donuts!

    If Hole in the Wall refers to the dent in your wallet after eating here, then it is a fitting name.

    Almost $16 for a burger, fries and a can of coke... Better be a good burger right? Well it's ok, but very similar to greasy spoons all over town that charge half the price. Or if you're gonna pay that, go to Umami or a Father's Office---something gourmet

    This place has long been on my radar after seeing the reviews and even claims that it is best in LA...

    CONS:

    Parking is a joke. I almost gave up. Ended up parking slightly in the red and rolling the dice.

    Expensive-- as mentioned above,  pricey burger for non angus beef.

    Taste was a little bland. The meat is not high quality and overly greasy. They don't do American cheese and the home made ranch is basically dill chip dip.

    PROS:

    The pretzel bun, the only thing innovative and not bland.

    I never need to visit here again and unless you can walk here I would not advise for all the hype it gets.

    If you want a large juicy delicious burger, this is one of the best burgers in Los Angeles. It's cash only! When you get there, there are sheets of paper where you choose your meat, bun and everything you want. Then you take it to the register and pay. I order the same thing every time. Beef patty on a brioche bun. Very good. Their sweet potato fries and homemade ketchup and ranch are also very good.

    Good burger, but I think it's overpriced. Ordering is in the style of the counter with less options. Had the hamburger with wheat bun and jack cheese. Burger was good but not worth $14 with drink and fries. Drink came in a can even though their menu says "fountain drink" and fries were just ok. Also not a fan of their home ketchup. Next time would just get the burger without the fries. Also, kind of a difficult place to find. I just think there are other specialty burger joints in LA that I would rather go to if I'm spending this much.

    The burgers are really good, but damn they are greasy! The burger is about 10 bucks. I think that is a bit much even though it's a large burger. I don't really have much else to say. I'm not sure I would pick this place to eat again, but I wouldn't argue with someone who did.

    I really like independently owned food joints, because of the quality of the food. You really get what you pay for. This place is definitely one of them. Came here with the girl and a few friends for classy burger, we were not disappointed.

    A cool thing is you get to choose everything that goes into your burger, and you can add things like bacon, egg, etc for a small fee. The pretzel bun lived up to the hype, though I'm sure the other breads are good too. The best thing is that the meat is really juicy and BIG. You won't get a half-assed hamburger patty here. The fries were decent. I commend them for making their own sauces, but their home styled ketchup is not so great :/

    This is definitely in the top 5 burger joints from where I've eaten so far. It is a little hard to find-- literally a hole in the wall... Beware, its hidden. When in doubt, pull into the nearest parking lot, and walk around the building.

    You'll end up spending around 9-10 bucks for a burger and fries.

    I've spoken to multiple people who says that this is the best burger they've ever eaten, and I totally have to agree with them.

    Hole in the Wall is really a hole in the wall - the restaurant itself is a bit hard to find since its hidden from view by a Winchell's Donuts. I've never had an issue with parking, but I hear it gets tough during peak hours.

    Once you get in the restaurant, you get to build your own burger on a checklist. I always get the pretzel bun, which is a bit chewier than your typical burger bun but it is the BEST. This bun pairs great with whichever meat you choose and I've never seen anything else like it. From there, I chose the turkey patty with Chipotle mayo, red onions, tomato, and their homemade relish. At one point this place offered their house-made zucchini pickles, but they don't offer them anymore which is a major bummer since they were my favorite part of the burger!

    I've tried both the sweet potato and regular fries, and both are alright. Their french fries remind me of thicker cut In-N-Out fries, which is always good. Hole in the Wall makes their own ranch dressing and ketchup. The ketchup comes out a brownish red color and is a bit watery. Though I know its way better for me than regular ketchup, I actually prefer the unnaturally red, made-from-concentrate ketchup. Something about their homemade ketchup doesn't sit well with me...

    This place has an AMAZING burger, but it is a bit pricier than your average burger. In the end, I usually end up paying $10 for a burger and fries to share, and that's not including any additional add-on's you can put on your burger for $1 extra each. Also, be sure to bring cash!

    Try this place out for lunch, you definitely won't regret it!

    My wife and I drove across town from the SGV to try this place for lunch today.  We both ordered the turkey burgers, hers on a wheat bun and I tried the pretzel bun.  We were both happy!  We also split an order of fries although I ate most of them.

    The burgers were huge and tasty.  I managed to not make too much of a mess. Meat was tasty and the cranberry mayo added just the right zing. Everything was fresh.  The wheat bun my wife had looked ordinary but my pretzel bun was wonderful - first time I ever ate anything like that. It had just the right "chew" to it. The fries were excellent - the best I've had in a long time with just the right crunch and size.

    Now was this worth $26 for two of us?  ($8.95 for each burger, $2.75 for the fries and $2 each for a couple cans of DIET Coke to keep our calorie count low, haha).  Well yes and no - for an every day lunch we can't afford that. But for just having an enjoyable lunch on Saturday to celebrate the weekend and get away from the sameness of SGV cuisine, yes it was.  No complaints about the food - I'd take stuff like this any day because it was tasty and fresh.

    Ambiance: Fast food type place. Smells great. Not a huge place, but we didn't find trouble sitting. Can also sit outside. A little dark. Didn't use the restroom. I was hoping for something to sanitize my hands before I dug in. Found the decor simple and a little dingy.

    Food: We got beef, turkey, brioche, and pretzel. I thought everything was delicious. I'm giving it 5 stars because I don't think I can make a burger taste any better. This place is grubby burger vs umami's snooty burger. I rather come here over umami. Will write a review about that place later. The sweet potato fries were pretty good. Nothing too special. I just like having fries with my burger. I wasn't a fan of their home made ketchup. Just went with the standard. Ranch was pretty good. I liked mixing the standard ketchup and the ranch.

    Service: Super nice and friendly. They got the food out quick. Didn't have to wait long. My turkey was a little pink and I asked if that was normal. The worker there said it was normal, but would put it on the grill for a little longer to make me feel better. I really appreciated that.

    Overall: I would definitely go back and recommend others to go there. I think I can grill up a pretty tasty burger, but I don't know if it will be better than this place. Thats why I like it.

    I can't say enough about this place. It's EASILY the best burger LA has to offer. I've been going to this place since day one. The owners are the nicest people on the planet. This joint used to be a cupcakery. He decided to make some handcrafted burgers during slow times and the hole in the wall was born. The homemade ranch is the tastiest thing in the world aside from their pretzel bun and all those awesome toppings. I usually get the beef burger with cranberry mayo, bacon, caramelized onions, those homemade zucchini pickles, and some fries. YUM YUM YUM!!! No other burger compares. Now, with their extended dining room and later hours, there is no excuse not to visit this place! The only bummer is they are cash only now but the stop at the ATM is totally worth it.

    I don't think it's the "Best Burger in LA" but it's definitely delicious. Love that you're able to really customize your burger.  As others have suggested, try the pretzel bun and sweet potato fries.  They would get 5 stars but they're cash only.

    Tips: Bring cash. Do not come here weekdays around lunch time as it gets busy and parking is even more ridiculous than usual.  The entrance is on Bently (behind the Winchells).

    My burger adventure continues.

    I found this place when I use to work near by in Brentwood.  It's not so close that you could walk, but close enuf that you wouldn't mind hopping into a car with some coworkers and make the trip, or so I thought.

    Well, hole in the wall is right.  The restaurant is actually pretty new, but it's kind of a pain to find if you don't know exactly where you're going.  The entrance is off of S. Bentley Ave or behind the Winchell's Doughnuts.  The parking situation is horrible, and really takes-away from the whole experience.  There is limited parking lot and street parking, so if you go around lunch time you may find yourself driving around for some time and walk a few blocks.

    I ordered a burger were their "famous" pretzel" bun which was a little salty.  The burger also didn't hold together well, so if you go this route you may want to get a fork an knife.  The burger itself was pretty big size wise and the taste was good, but nothing special other than the bun previously mentioned.  The fires were what you would expect from a place like this, but again nothing to write home about.

    If you're in the area and able to walk, give this place a try.  However, if you have to drive in, spending fifteen minutes looking for parking really makes this place not worth trip.

    Pros: Burgers/pretzel bun, house ranch is good
    Cons: fries are a lil pricey/portion

    After a really long 2.5 hr interview all I wanted was a big greasy burger to basically eat my sorrows. Of course by the time I'm out of my interview traffic is already at its peak but thankfully this place is seriously just around the corner. Walked in and it reminded me of a more casual/intimate counter burger. Less options but who cares if they are focusing on quality not quantity.
    Ordered the beef burger with pepper jack on a pretzel bun with bacon and a side of sweet fries.
    Everything was great, just what I needed. Patty was cooked perfectly and the bun held up all the way to the last bite.

    I feel like the burgers here are better than that one place named after the 5th taste, and will be coming here from now on!

    Two words: Awesome Burgers!  I think this is one of the best burger places around, certainly one of the best burgers in Los Angeles.  The Turkey Burger is outrageous.  The seasoning in the turkey burger is different than you would expect from a turkey burger; in this case its a great thing.  Both the beef and turkey meat are excellent.  I overheard the owner talking to another customer the last time we ate there, telling them about the high quality meat they used.  Its obvious they care about using only the finest ingredients.

    They offer lots of options to build your burger with, but all pair well in each of the burgers.  They don't drench their burgers in sauce.  An important note: the pretzel burger is outstanding.  If you have never had a pretzel burger, I would highly recommend trying it.

    This is my go to burger joint when I'm feeling like a hefty, good quality burger. There burgers here are huge! I usually go for the beef and their pretzel bread buns. They make their own ranch and ketchup (not a big fan of the ketchup). The place is really tiny, literally is a hole in the wall and most won't know it's even there unless you walk around the donut place and see it. Vegetarian options for those who don't eat meat. They have bomb sweet potato fries but the price was a bit much.
    I feel like the $9 burger is reasonably priced, given the size and quality. But come on, $2.75 for a tiny bag of fries? That's the only down fall but definitely recommend this place for those burger lovers.

    A great little burger joint If you're craving a fresh juicy burger. Everything is fresh, no frozen patties here, along with the homemade fries (See photos). They even make their own ketchup if you want it. Not exactly cheap but well worth it.

    It might be tricky to find and parking is minimal so just plan accordingly. Oh yeah, don't for get your cash. They don't do credit/debit cards.

    This place is super hard to find.  I actually had to call the joint to find it!!  I'm directionally impaired, so I'll let another Yelper offer directional advice.

    This place has ample seating and it doesn't feel like a hole in the wall.  It's more like a gourmet burger place (think Counter where you have to fill out a page of the kind of burger you want -- lettuce, sauce, toppings, etc.).

    I really like this place b/c it offers options for everyone.  My husband could get a greasy, juicy, beef burger on a pretzel roll or regular roll and I could opt for a turkey burger on a bed of red leaf lettuce.  I love that the lettuce is such high quality (none of that iceberg BS).

    The fries are crispy, decadent and perfectly salted.  One order can be shared by 2 people for sure.

    Warning:  I love organic ketchup.  I like wholesome things in general.  But the "natural" ketchup at this place was nasty.  I opted for the regular corn syrup ketchup variety.

    A solid 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 stars due to the variety offered.  They might have gotten 4 stars if they offered bbq sauce or a non-nasty wholesome ketchup, just sayin'.

    I thought this place was going to be inside Winchell's Donuts LOL but it turned out to be a real hole in the wall just behind it. Loved all the options for a made-to-order burger and had a cheddar burger on brioche with relish sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, and grilled onions. And definitely appreciated the size - it was huge.

    Only disappointments were that the patty lacked seasoning and could've been juicier, plus the bread overpowered the burger. I was also shocked when the bill came and it was $27.00 for two burgers and fries coming from a place that looked like a pre-school cafeteria. Guess all the add-ons added up.

    An above average burger, for sure. Very juicy and pink in the center, despite the hipster-nerd guy at the counter asking if, "Medium is ok?" That wasn't a good sign to start off - I mean, what respectable burger joint is ok with serving their beef a dry, grey, medium? Well, not to worry, Hole-in-the-Wall's medium is barely a medium-rare. I got the pretzel bun and onion mayo, and I suggest you do too. Not only are they tasty, but they do a good job of standing up to the bun-destroying juiciness of the beef mentioned above.

    Skip the homemade ketchup. It's way too bland, which is the problem with every homemade ketchup. It takes a lot of salt and sugar to make a decent ketchup, that's why Heinz is still tops. The homemade ranch is much better.

    $14.36 for the burger, fries, a can of soda and tax. Cash only, but they do have an ATM. A bit pricey overall, so just get the burger for $8.75 and take it to go. No refills on soda, and fries, well, you know my views on fries.

    Added bonus - nothing but GN'R coming out of the speakers the whole time I was there.

    These burgers are prettttyy big, eh? I didn't get a pretzel bun like some people recommended... it's a little hard to let go of the brioche bun that I'm used to. :(

    The burgers here are pretty tasty, juicy, and BIG. I didn't like the 'ketchup' made in-house, and the fries aren't as crisp as I'd like.  I'm not sure if it's special enough that I'd return...especially since the cashier guy was a bit huffy and rude. All in all, this place does serve a good burger, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

    Yup, true to its name. This place really is a hole in the wall. Been here a few times and loved it every time!

    My suggestion: get the pretzel bun! It's probably the firmest bread you'll get and you'll NEED it. Why? Because this burger is MESSSSYYY. It's huge and if you've got small hands like mine, you'll most likely need to cut it in half to truly enjoy eating this.
    I usually order the beef burger with chipotle mayo (yum!), red onions, lettuce, and avocado ($1 extra). Dip it in their house ranch and some ketchup and I'm set!

    I LOVE their house ranch. Their house ketchup is okay - nothing too special in my opinion and I actually prefer the Heinz ketchup.

    Pricing is a bit high. $10 flat for your burger, whichever way you customize it, unless you add on extra toppings. Is it worth it? I actually think so since the burgers are HUGE and it's not your typical fast food burger.

    All in all, awesome place. And I love that it's so close to where I live :)

    Tip: This burger is really oily. So EAT IT FAST otherwise your burger will be soggy and no bueno. So, I really wouldn't recommend taking it out.
