A great little burger joint If you're craving a fresh juicy burger. Everything is fresh, no frozen patties here, along with the homemade fries (See photos). They even make their own ketchup if you want it. Not exactly cheap but well worth it.
It might be tricky to find and parking is minimal so just plan accordingly. Oh yeah, don't for get your cash. They don't do credit/debit cards.

This place is super hard to find. I actually had to call the joint to find it!! I'm directionally impaired, so I'll let another Yelper offer directional advice.
This place has ample seating and it doesn't feel like a hole in the wall. It's more like a gourmet burger place (think Counter where you have to fill out a page of the kind of burger you want -- lettuce, sauce, toppings, etc.).
I really like this place b/c it offers options for everyone. My husband could get a greasy, juicy, beef burger on a pretzel roll or regular roll and I could opt for a turkey burger on a bed of red leaf lettuce. I love that the lettuce is such high quality (none of that iceberg BS).
The fries are crispy, decadent and perfectly salted. One order can be shared by 2 people for sure.
Warning: I love organic ketchup. I like wholesome things in general. But the "natural" ketchup at this place was nasty. I opted for the regular corn syrup ketchup variety.
A solid 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 stars due to the variety offered. They might have gotten 4 stars if they offered bbq sauce or a non-nasty wholesome ketchup, just sayin'. -

A burger is only supposed to be medium rare people!!!
Burger was pretty good but the place is tiny, they only take cash, no parking, and the fries are just OK. The place really isn't anything special but I would say it's not worth your time. -

A true hole in the wall, or rather corner of an intersection behind another building? HAha, it's worth a hunt because the burgers are large and those pretzel buns are just awesome. Not a big fan of the fries, but overall, a place I love to take visitors in town because it makes me look like I know LA really, really well. Service is friendly and though there's really only outdoor seating, I don't mind - we have good weather!

I don't think it's the "Best Burger in LA" but it's definitely delicious. Love that you're able to really customize your burger. As others have suggested, try the pretzel bun and sweet potato fries. They would get 5 stars but they're cash only.
Tips: Bring cash. Do not come here weekdays around lunch time as it gets busy and parking is even more ridiculous than usual. The entrance is on Bently (behind the Winchells). -

Pros: Burgers/pretzel bun, house ranch is good
Cons: fries are a lil pricey/portion
After a really long 2.5 hr interview all I wanted was a big greasy burger to basically eat my sorrows. Of course by the time I'm out of my interview traffic is already at its peak but thankfully this place is seriously just around the corner. Walked in and it reminded me of a more casual/intimate counter burger. Less options but who cares if they are focusing on quality not quantity.
Ordered the beef burger with pepper jack on a pretzel bun with bacon and a side of sweet fries.
Everything was great, just what I needed. Patty was cooked perfectly and the bun held up all the way to the last bite.
I feel like the burgers here are better than that one place named after the 5th taste, and will be coming here from now on! -

These burgers are prettttyy big, eh? I didn't get a pretzel bun like some people recommended... it's a little hard to let go of the brioche bun that I'm used to. :(
The burgers here are pretty tasty, juicy, and BIG. I didn't like the 'ketchup' made in-house, and the fries aren't as crisp as I'd like. I'm not sure if it's special enough that I'd return...especially since the cashier guy was a bit huffy and rude. All in all, this place does serve a good burger, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. -

Yup, true to its name. This place really is a hole in the wall. Been here a few times and loved it every time!
My suggestion: get the pretzel bun! It's probably the firmest bread you'll get and you'll NEED it. Why? Because this burger is MESSSSYYY. It's huge and if you've got small hands like mine, you'll most likely need to cut it in half to truly enjoy eating this.
I usually order the beef burger with chipotle mayo (yum!), red onions, lettuce, and avocado ($1 extra). Dip it in their house ranch and some ketchup and I'm set!
I LOVE their house ranch. Their house ketchup is okay - nothing too special in my opinion and I actually prefer the Heinz ketchup.
Pricing is a bit high. $10 flat for your burger, whichever way you customize it, unless you add on extra toppings. Is it worth it? I actually think so since the burgers are HUGE and it's not your typical fast food burger.
All in all, awesome place. And I love that it's so close to where I live :)
Tip: This burger is really oily. So EAT IT FAST otherwise your burger will be soggy and no bueno. So, I really wouldn't recommend taking it out. -

We finally tried this place after reading good reviews. We got a beef burger, turkey burger, and fries. The burgers were good, but I had expected bigger portions. The fries were sad and definitely could use improvement, also $2.75 for the fries was not worth it at all. $10 for a burger is a bit high for what it is.

Interesting place. Hard to find, pretty hidden, it's not facing santa monica, so it's hard to see.
It is like 'the counter', you choose bun and meat and whatever you wanna add on. The prezle bun is their must-try. The meat is juicy and perfectly cooked. The price is reasonable. It is a fun place to come. -

An above average burger, for sure. Very juicy and pink in the center, despite the hipster-nerd guy at the counter asking if, "Medium is ok?" That wasn't a good sign to start off - I mean, what respectable burger joint is ok with serving their beef a dry, grey, medium? Well, not to worry, Hole-in-the-Wall's medium is barely a medium-rare. I got the pretzel bun and onion mayo, and I suggest you do too. Not only are they tasty, but they do a good job of standing up to the bun-destroying juiciness of the beef mentioned above.
Skip the homemade ketchup. It's way too bland, which is the problem with every homemade ketchup. It takes a lot of salt and sugar to make a decent ketchup, that's why Heinz is still tops. The homemade ranch is much better.
$14.36 for the burger, fries, a can of soda and tax. Cash only, but they do have an ATM. A bit pricey overall, so just get the burger for $8.75 and take it to go. No refills on soda, and fries, well, you know my views on fries.
Added bonus - nothing but GN'R coming out of the speakers the whole time I was there.Listed in: Burgers

West Los Angeles, CA
I saw the portable sign on the street corner for awhile, but never tried to figure out what exactly this place was, until we saw on the fox news that Hole In the Wall Burger was on one of those "Best Burger List". We went online and checked it out a little, and after I told him it's pretty close by, the BF wanted to give it a try.
We finally stopped by last night around 6pm. We parked by the donut shop (but hey, we did go to Jamba Juice afterward, so we were customer of that street mall!) and walked around the corner. We walked in and there must be a confused look on our faces, the very mellow guy pointed to our left and said "the menu are there" Ah! okay. So we picked up the red markers and checked our choices of protein, bread and etc.
Two Burgers and Two orders of fries to go and our total was about $27. After handing over my cash, I picked up the order pad and adding up the numbers in my head to make sure the total was correct.
We both had beef burgers and they were cooked to medium by default. It was not bloody, but I think I will order it medium well if I come back, since it was a little too pink for my taste. I had the pretzel bun and even it looked a little too dark, it was soft. I had the cranberry mayo but did not really taste it. BF said his burger with fried egg was alright, not super great.
My order of Sweet Potato Fries was pretty small in size, BF"s regular fries was bigger. But in my opinion, both of them did not work $2.75 per order.
And after reading the reviews, I want to know where were our house made ketchup and ranch dressing. I did not see anything on the tables and we were not offered by the mellow cashier. -

I thought this place was going to be inside Winchell's Donuts LOL but it turned out to be a real hole in the wall just behind it. Loved all the options for a made-to-order burger and had a cheddar burger on brioche with relish sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, and grilled onions. And definitely appreciated the size - it was huge.
Only disappointments were that the patty lacked seasoning and could've been juicier, plus the bread overpowered the burger. I was also shocked when the bill came and it was $27.00 for two burgers and fries coming from a place that looked like a pre-school cafeteria. Guess all the add-ons added up. -

Walked by this hole in the wall on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood on my way to another place for lunch ,.. hadnt noticed it all but boy am I glad i did .. the burger was cooked to perfection .. the relish on the burger was awesome... the bun was incredible .. friendly impeccable service... fresh squeezed lemonade ... I loved it ... the burger now ranks up with the Shack Burger, the burger at Cafe D'Toile as my favorite burger in all of fLA

Before this blissful experience can even start, you NEED CASH!
These guys are amazing! Their burgers are deliciously juicy. On the saltier side but nonetheless juicy.
A bit on the pricey side but well worth it! If in recession mode, it could be a once a week or every other week indulgence.
What I usually order:
- beef
- pretzel bun (a must)
- chipotle mayo
- provolone or pepper jack (depending on the weather)
- tomato, lettuce, onions
The fries are tasty as well!
On top of the quality of food, their service is great. One time they believed that we had forgotten to get our soda but came running out with one in hand. We already had one so she just gave it to us anyway.
Dining in:
// There are (2) inside seating areas that can host a crowd of 6 pretty comfortably. Ice water is provided.
// There's outdoor seating as well; about (10)? tables each seating about (4) but you can rearrange them to suit your crew.
I always have a great experience here! I would totally recommend it! -
Review from Kevin C.
Burger. It used to be a simple sandwich. A simple meal. But now, it's all jazzed up and so is everyone's palate and everyone's preference for it.
On the last day of 2011, I ran in there hungry... willing to try anything hearty.
This place is like the Shinsengumi or hamburgers. I chose the following combination:
Protein: Beef Burger
Bread: Pretzel Bun
Spread: Chipotle Mayo
Cheese: Cheddar Cheese
Stuff Included: Everything (Red Leaf Lettuce, sliced red onion, tomato, mustard-pickle relish)
Extra Stuff: Fried Egg, sauteed mushroom.
I have large hands for my ethnicity and let me tell you, that's a whole lot of stuff to hold. The burger was the size of both of my fist bound together. No, I'm not trying to get into some kinky $4!#. But you get to point of how enormous this heap of stuff is.
What I like about this combo is that you can really taste everything in the burger. Sometimes, when you order a busy burger, you can't quite get the most out of it and that you can't taste everything in it.
This burger, however, was hearty and flavorful. The pretzel bun tasted exactly like how it should be, like a pretzel. The beef patty was juicy and meaty. The relish stood out well. The fried egg, the yolk of it was flowing along with the meat juice. While this burger did not blow my mind out of this world, it is still serious stuff, may I say. Was it overwhelming? It can be.
Definitely the place to go for a juicy hearty double fist. -

a very good burger, and an excellent crew manning the counter and grill. In many cities I would give it a 4 but the burger competition in LA is too fierce. You can get the burger just about anyway you want it and most importantly with beef, chicken, turkey or veggie. I love the pretzel bun and the chipotle mayo. Not a fan of the sweet potato fries. and it is pretty expensive.

A HOLE IN THE WALL around the corner. Behind the donut shop.
One of my favorite Burger joints of all time! ALL TIME!
Their menu is a checklist which is easy and quite simple.
I love Brioche bread because of it's sweetness, but often people recommend the Pretzel bread because of how different and unusual it is to have as a bun.
They know and ask with permission to cook it to a medium perfection which is great! It how burgers should be made.
My only struggle was their sweet potato fries. Just wasn't satisfying to me, but good side to have none the less.
Another thing is that they make Homemade Ketchup and Ranch which is cool to try.
It's a small place so don't expect a full restaurant and a place to sit every time.
If you happen to be in the area or a burger fan, it's the place to eat! -

This place is GOOD!!! It's definitely a Hole-in-a-wall joint.
I always get their special burger of the week and my friend gets the typical beef burger and both are well-seasoned and appetizing. You get a piece of sheet and check boxes of how you want your burger - toppings, sauce, the type of bread, the type of meat, etc. Don't forget to get their sweet potato fries!! -

This place always seems to be on a list of Best Burgers in LA. So I gave it another try. And nope: it's still the same. It's just mediocre.
Both time I've had their burger: it's been a sloppy mess with everything flying everywhere. I don't have enough wet-naps in my purse to deal with this place.
But if you want a burger on the westside, these are my picks:
Apple Pan
R+D Kitchen in Santa Monica
Tavern Burger at the Larder in Brentwood
And of course, the granddaddy of them all, Father's Office. -
Review from Brian W.
It's gotten decidedly less hole-in-the-wall-feeling compared to when they first opened. The homemade natural ketchup is still a little weird (hey, I was raised on crappy supermarket ketchup!), they're still cash only, and still no fountain drinks.
The fries have gotten better though, the atmosphere is almost exactly that you'd expect for an almost-mainstream burger joint that seems set on imitating a combination of Fatburger and In-n-Out, and the burgers are big and juicy.
I just can't convince myself that this place is that much better than anywhere else. It's a good, solid burger that completely overwhelmed the bacon I had added (so note: skip the bacon, you can't taste it!), but by the time I had a bottle of water, the fries, and bacon.... I didn't feel like I was getting enough for my money.
3.5 stars. It was good, just not enough...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cash only, minus one star. It's 2011. This alone will keep me from coming back again.
The burger had too much grease that made my bun soggy. The meat patty flavor was nothing special really but the other ingredients were pretty tasty.
The sweet potato fries tasted fresh with decent flavor but the portion size was small.
Meh. It just wasn't a good value. -

I never judge a burger by the toppings....it is all about the...well, BURGER! I want delicious beef- the rest is an afterthought. With that being said, this burger was awesome!! None of that thin beef patty crap....this burger was thick and one of the juiciest that I've ever had. Great seasoning, very fresh, and hot. Seriously, it was amazing. Now, I ordered it on a pretzel bun which is hands down a genius idea! The pretzel adds a great extra flavor that compliments the meat perfectly. Additionally, they have real, full pieces of lettuce on the burger- none of that shredded BS.
The place uses the same concept as The Counter and the burger totally destroys it! Only downside, it's not cheap. However, I would take a burger here (by far!) over any of the other similarly priced options at places like Chili's, Islands, BJ's, etc. -

Big. juicy. burgers.
Came here for lunch and this place literally does look like a "hole in the wall".
This place kind of reminds me of The Counter where you can pick whatever you want on a piece of paper and "create your own" burger. They have a lot of options to choose from! (I posted a picture of the list so you can see the different choices and create your own combinations!). I pretty much got a basic burger with a fried egg in it all on a pretzel bun. PRETZEL BUN? Never seen or had one before until here. So good! Can be a little salty but its all good. The burgers were super juicy, so juicy to the point where it was dripping liquid through the paper...ehh kind of gross. The burgers seemed pretty fatty too. I decided to only eat half of it! Super greasy...reasons why I rarely eat burgers unless its hella good like it is here! -
Review from Jenny J.
Meh. I've been here twice, but never had a regular burger, so perhaps I am not qualified to judge. However, I'm not super impressed. The first time, I got sweet potato fries while accompanying my roomie to get his special of the day philly cheesesteak. The guy taking orders was super frazzled and snappy. It was stressing me out just standing within sight of him. The fries were pretty good, but quite lacking in quantity.
The second time, I got a spicy chicken patty burger with grilled mushrooms and egg. The mushrooms were way gross, and I usually love mushrooms. They were just kind of fishy and salty and ...gross. I probably wouldn't recommend going the chicken route either, but I don't know if I'm just associating it with the grossness of the mushroom, can't be sure, better safe than sorry. -

One of the best burgers in LA. I had the beef burger with the pretzel bun, chipote mayo, pepper jack cheese and apple wood smoked bacon. It was juicy and very good. Cash only. Burgers are around $9. Add ons $1 each. Beef burgers come med. unless you ask for it cooked differently. I had mine med. rare and it was perfectly cooked. This is a messy burger cause it is very juicy. Be prepared to go through a lot of napkins. When you come in you fill out a little form near the door. A few seats inside and a few outside but it's not that big. Hard to find and hard to park. Look for the donut shop and it is hidden behind it. It's a big burger that you could probably split if you were a light eater. I also had the sweet potato fries and thought they were just average. Would highly recommend the beef burger! Service was good and friendly. My burger came out very fast.

Nice, juicy burger. Get plenty of napkins, because they can be messy. And definitely try the Pretzel Bun. The fries were a little saltier than I would have liked, but they were still fine.
The place is a little expensive for what you get, so I probably won't be eating here all the time. However, I'll definitely be back. -

I was really looking forward for a while to try this place, especially after the yelp reviews and pictures. Unfortunately, when I went there earlier this week my expectations were set a little too high (although not unreasonably high).
When I ordered my burger choice I thought it was going to be the best burger I would have ever had (beef, on pretzel bread, cheddar, and onion mayo with the works). I was so hungry when we went in and ordered, that the only thing on my mind were burgers and fries (so you would think any old burger would have done the trick!)
CONS
1. First bit was meh, and then I felt sick to my stomach and basically forced myself to finish the first half of the burger.
2. The fries weren't anything special either: I definitely expected more of a place that's so hyped up, that maybe they would have better than mediocre french fries, and heart attack style drenched in salt sweet potato fries,
3. Their so called "our ketchup" tastes like straight up vinegar.
4. OVERPRICED!!! I found myself paying $15 for a burger and fries that I force fed myself (I thought "hole in the walls" would have cheaper burgers than a legitimate steakhouse would.
PROS
1. Location is alright
2. Pretzel bread was the best part of the meal in my opinion
3. Their homemade ranch was great
I'd say definitely try it for yourself. Apple Pan trumps this place any day. -
Review from Danny T.
This place is literally a HOLE in a wall. I've heard a lot about this restaurant, but after eating at Father's Office, I was beginning to lose hope in LA food spots; but I came in as hopeful as possible.
The place was small and it kind of had the scent of Red Robin's seasoning salt. You order deli-style with a checklist and bring it to the register once you're ready to order. We were short on cash that day (it's cash only) and really wanted to try out the sweet potato fries but could only afford a couple burgers. The cashier, after hearing our troubled woes, went ahead a comped the fries and added it to our meal!
I stuck with the basics; just a regular burger, but after hearing so much about the pretzel bread, I figured I'd give it a shot. SO GLAD I DID! I was expecting something hard and crunchy but it was just right. It gave the burger and very unique taste, and had the glossiness of pretzel bread. The patty was cooked just to my liking, and the combo of toppings and condiments... LA has redeemed itself. The sweet potato fries were a good side snack, but I think the focus is really on the bear-gare.
Hole in the Wall, if you decide to eat-in, has a their own house-ketchup. It's how they think ketchup should be made; without the preservatives, coloring and what-nots. It's on the runny side and is pretty decent. But if you have been raised on the red sauce like I was since you were young, it's hard to stray from the preserved, colored what-not! -
Review from Alan K.
Monterey Park, CA
The only gripe I have about this place is that it's not any nearer to me than I'd like for it to be. Juiciest meat ever? Yes. Gourmet toppings? Yes. Variation of breads that absorb the juices of the meat? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely yes.
FOOD QUALITY:
So the meat doesn't fall apart like Father's Office, that's fine because it makes up with the amount of juiciness found in the meat. There are a lot of flavors that really run in this burger. Dominant burger meat flavor, small kick from chipotle mayo with pepper jack cheese, crunch from onions, tang from the relish, and the lettuce & tomato to lighten the burger a little.
Their fries? Yum! "Our ranch"? Different than your normal ranch and has a little more spice in it. Mix the "our ketchup" with "their ketchup" and you get a nice ketchup texture that has some sweetness that's seasoned.
SERVICE:
Fill out your paper. Give to them. Pay. They'll call you out when it's ready.
ENVIRONMENT:
Very small place, and I've only been here on a non-crowded time. Pleasant dine-in experience here as I got to sit out in the patio and enjoy the company of friends without having to shuffle through any sort of crowd. I would imagine it gets crowded and difficult to move around since the tables are slightly bunched together on the outside patio. Inside seating available, but not so much.
Overall, this place surprised me with its quality. I was told that this place was good, but I did not expect it to be .. well.. great! This is a must-try when you find the time to go at a convenient time at the least. For around $9-10, this place does itself a lot of justice.Listed in: Foodgasms.

Parking sucks, it's a pain to always get cash if you don't have it, and once in awhile your burger will come over cooked. That being said, having tried every burger I can find in la I still put this near the very top. All I can say is everything is just fresh fresh fresh. And the meat is so good and seasoned I don't even out any sauce on it. I've recommended it to veggie friends and the few that have tried it have not been enthused...so fair warning...this is a place for meat. That being said, the parking here is an incredible pain and I wish they do something. As for the slice I've never had a problem, but my friend did when she went, so I wonder if it's the same person that everyone complains about...I wonder...

Since we've become regulars, per se, it's only appropriate that I update my now 1.5 year old review. Although the recent price hike plus the opening of the West Hollywood Location (thus relegating the OG spot to red head stepchild status) could be review downers, I must contend that this is one 5-star joint. In fact, when I mentioned to J that I never updated my review, his mouth dropped open as if to say "what? it's not 5 stars yet?"
I can't vouch for the burgers, but J is a huge fan of the beef patty (on a pretzel bun with the zucchini pickle mustard, cheddar, and chipotle mayo). I opt for an egg sandwich with cheese and tomatoes on brioche, which is tasty in its own right. The fries are the best you can get on the westside - right amount of crispiness and loaded with flavor. If you get your sauce on the side, then use it for dipping instead of a spread and you'll be one happy camper. The sweet potato recipe has also changed since my first review and I prefer the new sweeties over the old ones.
On top of good eats, the staff here is A-1. Susan the owner is super-nice and always friendly, and the regular counter guy (whose name always escapes me) puts up with my verbally abusive dog, who only barks at him. I hope that no more artwork or staff moves over to the WeHo location, but I gotta be happy for a local place with good eats that's doing well enough to expand in this recession.
Also, the one *helpful* tip of this review: you CAN park in the lot in front of Jamba Juice/Winchell's Donuts. After a year of scouring the streets for a space, I realized that the HITW address (11058) matches the "allowable" addresses in that surface lot.Listed in: Dog-Friendly Restos

what I had:
Beef Burger cooked medium rare on Brioche with Chipotle Mayo and provolone with lettuce tomato and an over medium fried egg.
What they got right...everything. Cooked just right, and mostly impressive, the over medium egg was over medium! good job.
Customer service was courteous and prompt. Nice spot to grab a burger to go or sit out on the patio. -

I heart burgers. I really, really heart burgers. This place is only ok. We ordered the turkey burger on a pretzel bun with a side of sweet potato fries.
First, the pros: (1) A fairly tasty burger. Not terribly good nor bad. (2) Pretzel bun was fairly novelty and not nearly as dense as I imagined it would be.
Then the cons: (1) The burger was far greasier than I would expect a TURKEY burger to be. Stuff dripping everywhere in that shiny, smooth, greasy way. (2) It's close to $3 for the fries! Doesn't matter if you get the regular or the sweet potato, it's $3 for almost nothing. Seriously, the fry envelope was about the size of a child's happy meal fry pouch. And the sweet potato fries weren't knock-my-socks-off fries. They were like Trader Joe's brand nuked in the microwave. (3) Cash only. This is possibly the only hole-in-the-wall aspect of the joint, as the prices certainly weren't reflective of the establishment's name.
I only tried this place because it's like 3 blocks from my apartment. It made me regret cheating on KTown's Kalbi Burger and on Father's Office. -

Friends told us about this place and when we drove by, we were skeptical. It really is a hole-in-the-wall. But the burgers are super-fresh and good, and the choice of buns (pretzel bun!) is surprising but tasty. I only give 4 stars instead of 5 because the locale is small and you can't really eat in.

This place is literally a whole in the wall, and tucked back behind a strip mall.
Very easy to order, choose whatever you want to put on it.
I chose:
Beef Burger
Whole Wheat

The order came out and boy was that a burger. Big and Juicy. The only thing I would change for next time is the wheat bun. It was a bit dry and felt that it would have been a little better when a white bun or pretzel bun.
This is a messy burger, so do not try to eat this on the road. Take your time and make sure to have lots of napkins.
Sweet potatoe fries are a must. One of the best so far.
The staff was friendly and came out to make sure our table was wiped down and that it didn't wobble anymore ;)
They have their homemade ketchup which took a while to adjust to, but theirs is not processed so you want to eat it over the regular ketchup
I am so excited that the W.Hollywood location opened up 2 weeks ago since I live closer to that one.
Overall amazing! Probably in my top 5 burgers at this point. -
Review from Sean R.

I could not resist not knowing what the burger would actually taste like with the BACON in it. Ever since I posted "Where's the BACON?" at the Hole in the Wall burger joint, it has kind of become a big deal. The blog post soared to the top of my charts. I thought that going back there and taking some nicer photos would help give it the respect that it deserves.
Thank you,
