5 reviews for Holbrooke Hotel
GOOD NEWS: The Holbrooke will remain open for another two years (into 2011). The newspaper reports that the owners have entered into an operating agreement (with an option to buy) with an outfit that believes it can run the place at a profit.
So now is your chance to support historical preservation. Come and stay at the Holbrooke. You don't have to eat at the restaurant.

Wow, we're (my better half and I) both surprised by the previous two reviews. We stayed at the Holbrooke last night and treated ourselves to dinner on their patio. The service was friendly from the start and the other patrons seemed quite happy as well. We overheard lots of compliments being handed out. Sylvie had the salmon with capers and mashed potatoes and I had the sole stuffed with crab and pilaf on the side. Both dishes were fantastic and I'm already scheming to reproduce the sole/crab dish back at home.
The patio evening atmosphere was cozy and the setting was dimly lit with candles and soft patio style lighting. There were a number of fountains incorporated into landscaping which also added a feeling of serenity.
Had we read the previous two reviews before staying at the hotel, we would have certainly eaten elsewhere. I'm glad we didn't though, as we were very happy with our meal.
I lived in Nevada City for 17 years and this was THE place to go for Sunday Brunch, I had Christenings there and many a special dinner. Moved away, but came back recently to take my xfather in law out to dinner. They downsized the dining room for one. The menu was boring and the food awful! It tasted like the chef used to cook in a nursing home, no kidding. Everything was bland and tasteless and cooked until mush. The hotel was sold, they said. BUT they do NOT have to have horrid food. Bad excuse! I will not be back here again. It was pathetic! I really wanted a special place and a special meal for him. Wrong!
Was taken here for my valentines Bday. Bad service, got a cold entree. My friend ordered a large caesar with shrimp, and got a teeny salad. When we let the waitress know she had ordered a LARGE caesar, as her ENTREE, the waitress said she would correct it. She came back at the END of the meal and said..."oh, I owe you a bunch of lettuce, did you want that now?" Yes, she was serious. Not impressed, will not go back. Too many other choices for less money in the area that I really like. Had I been the one PAYING I would have spoken to the management. Trying to be high end, not pulling it off.
I don't know about the food, but my stay in the Lola Montes suite was wonderful. Great sheets and copious pillows. Historic without being fussy or uncomfortable (a challenge in old buildings). Yes, Mark Twain really did sleep here, and now, so did I. Quite comfortably. Oh yes, did I mention the clawfoot tub, turndown service with chocolate covered strawberries and a full ice bucket on the bedside tray, robes, free postcards and stationery, and you can see the stars at night out there in Nevada County, even in the center town. I was in town for the 12 hour contra and walked the five blocks back from the Vet's Hall past midnight and felt quite safe. The continental breakfast was one of the best I have ever had: good coffee, real milk, yogurt, fruit, granola, English muffins, hard boiled eggs, mixed fruit salad, 3 kinds of juice....there was more than that! The reception desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Grass Valley looks like a nice town and I would definitely stay at the Holbrooke Hotel again.
