    THIS PLACE IS TOP NOSH!!!

Our order: pork BBQ sandwiches with sides of steak fries, sweet potato fries, cheesy corn muffins, collard greens

    Food:
This is the BEST BBQ SANDWICH that I've had yet! The pork is so tender and smokey. What's more is that Hog Wild Smokehouse manages to make their bbq so good without overloading on the soppy bbq sauce! In fact, there isn't a trace of bbq sauce used in their recipe. I think it's dry rub bbq. Though with the 6 different bottles of bbq sauce they provide (arranged in a cardboard six-pack of beer--cute. kidding.), you can dress up your bbq sandwich as sloppy and soppy as you'd like. The steak fries were really good--thick, soft inside, crispy outside. The sweet potato fries were slightly candied and also delicious. I love corn muffins. You could really tell the collard greens were cooked in cider vinegar for 6 hours. Everything was great!

    Service:
Very attentive and helpful. I asked our waitress for recommendations on just about everything--entrees, sides, desserts, and she gave us great suggestions on everything.

Tip: If you have room, the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream was a sweet note to end on.

Best dry seasoned BBQ I've eaten.  Dry BBQ is the true art of BBQ cooking.  The meats are seasoned and cooked dry (with out smothering in BBQ sauce).  When the meal is served the dinner adds their favorite sauce.  Good dry BBQ is the hardest BBQ to master, primarily, because you have to keep the meat moist and can't mask the cooking by drowning the meat in BBQ sauce.  Hog Wild does it right: yummy!

Eaten here a few times and no complaints.  Best menu item is the slab of ribs.  The smoked turkey leg is also great and something you don't see so often.  Nice beer list.

This is a great family dinning venue.  This is a great road side restaurant who's honesty, hard work, and spectacularly unassuming food matches any five star restaurant in DC.

Inside seating and a quaint outside patio.

It is only a short hop of I-64.  WELL worth the detour.  Also, if you look at the map and note my comment below, route 60 is a pleasant diversion from I-64.

(Separately, if you want to add some additional spice to your drive on I-64, take route Route 60 between exits 205 and exit 231.  Route 60 parallels I-64.  Route 60 is a Nice 4 lane state highway most of the way.  Gets you off I-64 for a bit.  West of exit 205 there are a lot of lights on route 60. Just off exit 231 is where route 60 meets with route 30 so you spent a few minutes on route 30.  Since route 60 is a 4 lane state route (and no one is on the road) you make good time.  Great break from 64 and some interesting sites, stops, and restaurants.  When I drive back and forth (east or west) from DC to Norfolk, I always take route 60.  The hard part is whether to have BBQ at Willie's or The Hog Wild Smokehouse, both are on route 60.  I stop at Willie's (4 star) if I'm in a rush and at Hog Wild (5 star) if I have time to sit.  Both restaurants are close to I-64 and great eats.)

This quickly became a favorite dine-in place for the hubby & I. Love the down to Earth, inviting atmosphere, even for the family with young children. The servers are friendly and attentive.
We've been so many times, and it's still so hard to stray away from ordering the brisket, pulled pork, ribs, smoked turkey leg, etc. Haven't had a bad side-dish or appetizer yet. The specials are always very good too. Favorite dessert is the Grand Marnier Creme Brulee or Banana Fosters.

We haven't found a Southern BBQ/Creole joint this good since being stationed in the Southern Gulf States.

Well worth the detour for those traveling the I-64 corridor.

Tucked away far far down Richmond Road. It kinda hits you from no where so be prepared for a sharp stop. Well worth the journey!

It's pretty far away from the touristy destinations of Williamsburg but it's well worth the drive. To me, the BBQ is far superior to that of Pierce's and many of my friends agreed. I've been here, twice, once splitting the Hog Wild (which is really big enough for 3-4 people) and the other time getting the Pastalaya.

Lunch time there was relatively no wait; the other time I went on a Saturday at about 7 and had to wait about 20 minutes.

Each time the service was pretty good and the food is amazing. Get the turkey leg if you are getting the Hog Wild--it's nice and juicy with a well-smoked flavor. The ribs also had a similar taste.

The sauces were a little bland, however. The mustard one was overpowered by the mustard taste...two of them were very good. I think the Jazzy one and the Bayou Boogaloo?

The Pastalaya was absolutely amazing the next time I went. Sausage, shrimp, onions, and green peppers sauteed to perfection and cooked with noodles in a cajun creamy sauce--topped with a crawfish cake. I didn't think I could finish it but it was just too good.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or staying in Williamsburg.

The person who gave this establishment THREE stars does not know what they are talking about.  My husband and I had the alligator bites appetizer.  We had never had alligator before and found it to be somewhere between chicken (mild flavor) and clam strips (chewy consistency).  Hubby had the ribs and I had the pulled pork.  Ribs had a dry rub applied to them and did not need sauce at all.  The pork came dry so it was nice to be able to try their five different barbecue sauces on it.  The baked beans were fantastic and the greens were the best we have ever had.  Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from the hotel we were staying at.

This place is an interesting combo of southern ribs and Louisiana style cooking with alligator/gumbo etc.

I think their sauces are delicious, they have a variety, some vinegar based ones, some sweet thick ones, a mustard one, and one made from Tabasco sauce.  I usually end up with a little palette of sauces all over my plate.

The brisket (I use a vinegar sauce), ribs (I use a sweet thick sauce), and chicken (I use the mustard sauce) are all delicious.  Their cheesy corn bread muffins are hoarded by my boyfriend.  Their beans have a smoky rich flavor which is way better than anything that comes out of a can.

You can also save money if you follow them on Facebook, so we use that as an excuse to get more bbq!

Had the "all you can eat rib night" here on a recent vacation in the area.  For $16, you get as much slow-cooked, meat-falls-off-the-bone pork ribs as you can handle, and pour on any of six different sauces with different bases (vinegar, tomato).  They were a little bit salty for my taste but otherwise fantastic.  Sides were great as well - crispy outside/mealy inside french fries, a solid coleslaw, and cheesy cornbread muffins - and I'm now missing the sweet tea I had here.

Love the down home atmosphere. It seems they converted an old house into the restaurant.  Service was fast and our waitress was friendly.

One note on getting here: The restaurant is kind of in the middle of nowhere, so don't look for it in a shopping center or intersection.  There's a sign along the road though so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it, but even with the GPS on we were thinking "how can there be a restaurant around here?"

Great menu with lots of N.O. inspired options. We had great service and all of the food was a great blend of smoky and savory goodness.  Perfect stop on the way to VA beach and I will be back.

As soon as I got out of the airport, I was in a tearing hurry to check in and track down some good Southern BBQ. Hog Wild Smokehouse serves up some really great 'cue in addition to some Creole food. If you are unfamilar with the area, I recommend driving there while there is still light outside as I had considerable trouble following the road signs after dusk. It is located about 20 minutes north of Williamsburg and completely worth the extra drive.

We tried the gator bites just for the fun to trying alligator meat. I had some before in Florida and didn't care for it much as it was rather tough and chewy. The gator meat was chewy yet tender, almost the texture of calamari. The crisp morsels were marinated in buttermilk and lightly breaded and served with a horseradish dip that was tangy without having too overwhelming of a bite from the horseradish.

We opted to go for the gusto and ordered the Hog Wild platter which is way too much food for two people. The platter comes with a pound of spareribs, 1/2 of a chicken or jumbo turkey leg, a choice of beef brisket, pulled pork or smoked sausage, cheesy cornbread, plank fries, bbq beans, corn and coleslaw. You can ask to substitute other sides like collards or black-eyed peas. We opted for the chicken, pulled pork, coleslaw, corn and collards. The BBQ is served with a literal six pack of sauces. They cleverly recycled cardboard Bud and Coors six pack holders for storing bottles of their homemade sauces which are also available for purchase. There is a sauce to suit everyone's tastes. The spareribs were dry-rubbed, tender and juicy. The chicken was tender, but I was too full from everything else to do it any justice. The pulled pork was flavorful and tender from slow cooking. The collards were delicious. I would skip the coleslaw next time because I'm not a big fan of vinegary coleslaw. The plank fries were mealy and dusted lightly with seasoned salt. I am personally not a huge fan of cheese, so I thought the cornbread would have been better without cheese. The texture was tender and moist which is good since a lot of cornbread is dry as sawdust.

Even though our table was groaning with food, we stopped from stuffing ourselves so that we could try the bread pudding. This was a really wonderful version which does not have raisins (lucky for me since I don't care for raisins). It is served with a raspberry sauce which presented in unique contrast the bread pudding. The only thing that I would change about the bread pudding is suggest that it be served warm as cool bread pudding just doesn't taste as good.

If you are visiting in the Williamsburg area, this is a must for your itinerary. I wish I could have carved out enough time to make a second visit. I had to content myself with the yummy leftovers from our dinner.

Out of the way but a great stop on the way back from the OBX. Beef and pork sandwiches were good but small.

Great BBQ, five tasty sauces, super prices, friendly service.  This is it!

What a great place!  Fun setting, Louisiana themed.  Clientele range from professionals to families to bikers, so you get a nice, eclectic crowd.  Best BBQ I've had in the area, a good selection of sides, and they have entrees as well.

Highly recommended -- Check it out!

This place was recommended by a local working at the Ham Shop so we had to check it out. Driving out there from our little place in Williamsburg was a bit funny cause it really is in the middle of nowhere ( at least coming from someone in NJ ). We did finally find this restaurant and were pleasantly greeted by the familiar smoky scents of a great bbq joint.  This place fits the bill for BBQ dive ambiance and it's really all about good food and great people.

Normally I judge a good BBQ joint by several criteria.  For example: Do you see signs of visible smoke outside?  Does the place look a little "crusty"?  Is there an 18-Wheeler parked our front?  No, No, and No.  What a surprise this place was.  Looked like a cafe.  What was very interesting -- while BBQ is their specialty, they had a fairly varied menu.  First time in my life I've seen a BBQ place with a descent wine list...or come to think of it, *any* wine list.  The BBQ ribs were outstanding -- thick, smokey, and meaty and really did not require a drop of sauce.  On this night they had Pumpkin Soup which was outstanding; not sweet but very savory and finished with Pumpkin seeds.  Next time I'm saving room for dessert: the peach cobbler looked to die for.  Skip Pierces (over rated) and that other place on US-60 that does badly on the health dept. scores.  I'm coming back.  They also offer a Sunday brunch (real food, no buffet -- go to Williamsburg for that garbage).

I'm local and drove by so had to stop since their aren't many restaurants around. I decided to go for the family meal "Hog Wild", with the rack of ribs, brisket, and half chicken. I gotta tell you - the meat was smoky and tender! Yes it was very tasty! There are no seasonings cooked on it and there shouldn't be in case you want to dip in barb q sauce. The sauces they had were..eh, ok. I prefer the sweet barbecues, kinda thick. There was only one like this out of 6 types so I dipped in it (sorry forgot the name). Okay - so being that my hubby is from the South, I have eaten lots of Southern food to include collard greens. I thought theirs was missing the pork neck bits and it had way to much vinegar. Even my son cringed saying it was too sour. The slaw was good as was the cheesy corn bread. My hubby said it was pretty good food and from a man who was raised on Southern food, I'd say the meats are pretty darn good minus a few side dishes. I will definitely go back and order different sides, for the experience, next time round.
