10 reviews for Hog Heaven Barbeque
One of my goals for our cross country road trip was to take in as much barbeque as possible. When out trip got canceled, I was inconsolable. We did end up flying to our destination - a wedding in Mt. Olive, NC. Since we had to fly in and out of Durham, my only goal, other than attending the wedding, was to eat some North Carolina BBQ pork. On our way back to the airport, Yelp for the iPhone made my dream come true. Hog Heaven was recommended and it surely delivered.
Awesome BBQ pork, fried okra, greens, hush puppies, and sweet tea. I could move to NC just for this meal.
A friend told me later of another BBQ place in NC I should have visited... now I have a reason to come back!
Very tasty bbq indeed. Doesn't disappoint.
I am not sure if this place is called the hog heaven because this is were pigs go to heaven but whatever it is, the food here is pretty good and portion here is huge. We ended up getting 1 combo and shared. I liked the stew and my bf liked the bbq pork so it worked out perfectly.
You haven't had BBQ pork until you come to North Carolina. Granted I haven't had it anywhere else, the pulled pork version that they call BBQ here, but I almost feel like I don't want to, it's that good. This is my third visit to the Triangle and have tried BBQ pork in several other places and it stacks up pretty well everywhere. But Hog Heaven has the reputation as being in the upper echelons and by Gawd, it is.
You order it by the pint, which turns out to be a pound, and when you get it to go it comes all mashed up in a container. We also ordered half a BBQ chicken (this one on the bone, as one would normally expect) and some cole slaw and two dozen hush puppies.
It had been over a year since I had BBQ pork and I remembered how much I liked it but the surprising flavor had somehow eluded me. At the first bite it all rushing back and then some - this is some fine tasting pork, soft and tender, almost pate like, so fine is it shredded. A slight tang of vinegar, a touch more than a little spicy, a taste of wood smoke lingering on the palate, this is some primal tasting goodness that kicks in atavistic memories of generations of cooks perfecting and cherishing and passing on a time capsule of regional excellence. After that everything should pale in comparison but the very god cole slaw and hush puppies, while not as mind bogglingly delicious, were a very good complement and rounded out the meal satisfactorily.
The chicken, as usual, did not impress me - BBQ chicken so far has not and I don't expect it ever will, but you don't come to Hog Heaven for chicken now, do you?
I prefer Hog Heaven over most BBQ joints in the area although my friends say Allen & Sons is very good too. But I like the pork here a lot. Plus the price is very reasonable. My wife and I get sandwiches, fries, and a drink for just about 10 dollars.
Their sweet tea is good and I love their hush puppies. I've only had their fried chicken once and I've never had the ribs even though the place is packed on rib night so there's got to be something special with them.
My second favorite is the chicken and dumplings. They're a little on the salty side but I prefer it that way.
Bottom line, delicious and super affordable. I could eat here every day.
Hog Heaven was my first North Carolina BBQ experience, and it's made me a true fan. The pork was incredibly tender, the sauce was tangy and addictive, and the family pack combo was an incredible deal. Dinner for 4 adults came out to less than $40, including tip! Speaking of tip, the service here was excellent. We dined in, and the nicest lady kept filling up our water and asking if we needed anything. The decor isn't the most appealing; the place looks a little dingy and is located in a strip mall. But the BBQ is incredibly tasty, and at less than $10 per person, I really can't complain about the ambience. If I were a Durham native, I'd definitely bring my out-of-town guests here to experience Carolina BBQ and southern hospitality.
My favorite place in the triangle for Carolina Barbeque. The pork is slow cooked for at least seven hours before being pulled off and seasoned perfectly with a slight vinegary taste and other subtle but tasty spices I can't place. It doesn't taste all smokey like at Allan and Son's, so the pork taste really comes through.
The boiled cabbage, hushpuppies, mac and cheese are all delicious, but the best thing is the barbeque. I get the barbeque sandwich, with cole slaw of course, and it is simply amazing. Their coconut cake is great, though their banana pudding is just mediocre.
I have been to Bullocks, the Q Shack (which is Texas style), Ol' N Carolina BBQ, and Allan and Son's. While they all are good, this is by far my favorite.
I'm just not feelin' this place. Granted, I have not yet tried the BBQ here, so this review is based simply on their other offerings.
Had a shrimp burger there that just doesn't compare to the places down at the coast - Big Ed's or Big Oak Drive-In. It would've been much better had they put the cocktail sauce and tartar on the burger instead of having you do it yourself. Plus, the quality of the Kraft pre-packaged cocktail and tartar really didn't add to the burger any.
The sides were pretty much just there. I think the turnip greens were canned, because they had no flavor to them and were a bit too "uniform" for comfort. The yams were pretty good, although I'm not sure they were fresh. Also, I would've cut down on the amount of nutmeg.
My meal wasn't bad to be sure, which is why it earns 2 stars. It just wasn't any place I'd go out of my way to try again.
This is the best BBQ I have found anywhere. I still need to try a couple places including Byrd's in NE Durham and Backyard in S Durham, but this is quite simply the best pulled pork I have found in the city or elsewhere. The restaurant is set in a sketchy-looking shopping center on Guess Rd just off of 85, but is a family operation with some seriously succulent Q. The hushpuppies are fine, and the mac n cheese are OK, but the reason I keep returning is for that mouthwatering eastern-style Q.
It hurts to betray Allen & Sons, but Hog Heaven simply offers the must succulent pulled pork in the state.
