Looking for a reasonably priced steakhouse near the Downtown landed up at Hoffbrau's and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent and so was the food. Started with the jalapeno peso appetizer which was deep fried slices of jalapeno smother in cheese- yum! We each had steak of various cuts and the doneness was perfect. The potatoes were also tasty. Lastly they had great fresh brewed ice tea.

Stopped in with a large group for dinner.
Tried fried pickles for the first time. Thought they were great, nice spicy batter on them. The spicy potato chips were great too.
The rib eye was good. It had minimal fat, The sweet potato had a brown sugar syrup? On it which made it a bit greasy. Service was good considering we were a large group.

This place was right in the middle of all the touristy places/things we were doing, so we decided to give it a shot. It had chicken fried steak.. I mean... how can you go wrong? :) I ended up getting the chicken fried steak, of course, and my friend got the catfish I believe.

The best part of mine was the Texas Toast underneath the chicken fried steak! Man, the excess gravy and meat bits that were on top made the toast SO GOOD! I have never seen chicken fried steak served on top of toast besides here in Texas... and when I go back to California... I think that's what I will miss the most! Plus, all the sides they serve here are nice and greasy and super good.

The one thing though, is they don't warn you when things are spicy... I think that they assume everyone here likes spicy things... and well... I don't. The creamed corn here ended up being a little spicy... weird. I would go back, but not if I were really trying to impress someone with Texas food. It's just average.

Good place for a reasonably priced steak and beer. Mine was slightly overcooked so you may want to order one notch below your usual doneness and if necessary send it back for a touch-up.

The downside was the waitress talked me into dessert ... bannana pudding. Yikes, this was commercial grade Jello-mix stuff with some sliced bannanas and nilla cookies. Not great at all. Pass on the desserts here is my advice.

Man I loved their food, but you know what was even better?! Their rita sampler with 6 different flavors of margaritas! I sat outside and enjoyed great weather with some really great friends and had some really great food. Not much more I could have asked for.

So, yeah. This place isn't great. But I'll tell you what it is: a lunchtime steak for less than $10. That just saved you from getting 2 stars, Hoffbrau.

So the other day I was craving an actual MEAL for lunch (go figure) and I couldn't think of anywhere to go in this concrete jungle full of less than stellar options. So I decided I'd go back to West End, I dunno...because I'm convinced that one day I'll find something there I like (besides the Chipotle whose lines are so long you'd think you're waiting to meet Lady Gaga).

So, Hoffbrau it was. I was debating between that and YO, but Hoffbrau was offering a lunch special sirloin for $8.99. Sold.

The steak was good...better than I expected it to be for that price. Cooked how I ordered it, juicy, seasoned well. But...that was about all that went right. The salad was a some iceberg, a few red onion rings and a little bit of chopped tomato that looked like it could have been canned. I ate it, but only cause I was starving. the mashed potatoes were gross, and I could tell that they'd been sitting under a lamp. They were really milky...as in, you could taste the milk they used when whipping them...weird, cause I've never experienced it before. It was gross.

Truth time: You're gonna run into some tourists. They'll probably ask you questions. Your only answer should be: Go basically anywhere but West End. This place sucks.

So, all in all it was a kind of lackluster meal. BUT I didn't have to douse my steak in A-1 to choke it down, and a steak, a side salad, mashed potatoes and a beer came out to about $13. Not too shabby. But, let's be honest, I'm not gonna go out of my way to go here, and it certainly wasn't good enough to branch out and try other things on the menu. If I'm at work and craving a steak, I'll go here. Otherwise, meh.

Not "Texas" margaritas. My review would have been a four had it not been for our waiter and the margaritas. We asked if they were made with lime juice. He said yes and we ordered two. They are actually made from a margarita mix that doesn't taste like lime juice margaritas and leaves an aftertaste.

We had other issues with our waiter too like the fact that he didn't mention the Valentine special (which was essentially what we ordered only we didn't figure that out until later when our bill was much higher than it would have been with the special) and he brought our check before we could even order dessert. It wasn't busy but it was like he was ready for us to leave and we were all actually in a great mood for Valentines.

We called ahead and were seated as soon as we walked in the door. The hostess and the food were really good. We ordered peppered sirloin, chicken fried steak,  baked potato, sweet potato, mac n cheese, fried okra, fried pickles and salad. The banana pudding alone is worth going back for!

Um... Holy crap! This place is negative 5 star bad. For F#^^%^** sake do they know what a salt shaker in the kitchen is? God help me this was terrible!

There is an off putting odor when u walk in the door that's a beer smell mixed with vomit or something.

What's sad about all of this? The wait staff are great! A collection of mixed nuts who all seem to be attentive and fabulous. I cant imagine what they did to get sentenced to this seventh circle of hell.

I came here because the snobs at YO steakhouse wouldn't even acknowledge my presence, sigh.

If your looking for good chow this place is horrible! If it weren't in touristville it would have been out of business years ago! I would hate to think anyone sees this place as representing Texas foods. Perhaps if your a fan of grease and fried food this is the place for you.

It was so bad it killed my buzz! When the waiter asked me how everything was my response was "life is about managing expectations"... the look on his face was priceless. Poor guy... I did not short his tip, it wasn't his fault, but I did leave half a martini on the table. I could bash this place for hours, but I think you get the point.

In town for a Convention, we had a staff outting to Hoffbrau.

Staff couldn't have been nicer; they were very responsive, even with our big group the food came out fast and hot.

All hail the appetizers!  Yes, most are fried; but, hey, if it ain't fried it ain't food - am I right?  Fried mushrooms very tasty; fried pickles were fine; the jalapenos with cheese - yum.

Steaks looked good.  I had chicken.  (It was too late to eat steak!)  Everything was just fine.  Wasn't blown away - nor was anyone in the party.  But the portions were nice sized, everyone was well taken care of, and everyone left content.

So, all good!  Great place for a group in the West End.

What's awesome about Hoffbrau?  It's the people I meet at the bar.  Every now and then when I come straight from work to class I have time to kill.  I come sit at the bar at Hoffbrau to have dinner.  You may see me having drinks too.  Shhh, don't tell my teacher.

Any who.  The steaks are okay.  Nothing mind blowing.   Better than a steak at Chili's.  The salads that come before the steak are a joke.  Hello, bag-o-salad mix on a plate.  This past time I did order the chicken fingers, and they were not bad at all.  Juicy and the gravy was good.

I've received complimentary homemade chips a few times that I've been here and those bad boys rock.  The sourdough bread is good too.

Soooo.  On to the people I meet here.  There are always out of towner's here.  In for conferences, concerts, jobs, etc.  It's just kind of fun to have a few minutes to chat up a person or two in a new place.  Even better when you can suggest places for them to visit and/or recommend Yelp too.  I don't venture in the West End too much, but the fact that Hoffbrau is a fun place to hang and I always meet a foreigner every time I go, it will always be a stopping point for me when I need food before school.

This should be a 3.5 star.

I can't believe i just ate shrimp inside a jalapeno pepper wrapped in bacon, doused with Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce -- only in TX!  That's the Sweetwater Shrimp and I got the platter, which included a soup or salad (I chose a dynamite chili) and a side"winder" (I opted for fried okra).

We started with Tito's Cherry Limeade -- the vodka was so smooth that I didn't realize it was an alcoholic beverage until the waiter asked if we wanted another one and I asked if there were free refills :)  Nice drink with a kick and good flavor, but you have to like lime (and vodka, apparently).

Service and ambiance were stellar; I felt like I was in a texas roadhouse.  The portions are massive -- my friend took home half of his full rack of ribs.

The dessert selections sounded great -- especially the homemade banana pudding -- but we didn't have any room left.

It's conveniently located on Market Street in the West End, right off the DART and near the more touristy spots like Hooters, Hard Rock Cafe, and Dick's Last Resort -- but tucked away nicely enough that you don't feel like you're in a tourist trap.  There seem to be some good, reasonably priced lunch specials, too.

I'm glad we chose this place.

Not so much of "Steak House." I mean, yes, they have steaks, but not the most excellent one you'll ever get. I don't know Texas very well, but I get the feeling that there are a lot more better options outside of the West End  - after all, it is a tourist trap area, isn't it?

My friend and I split Texas Two Steps - giant plate of steak for two with two sides (~$27). I asked mine to be medium rare, but it was bit over cooked. The portion was large enough for me that I had to give half of mine to my friend. Loved the fried okra side - just love anything okra in Texas - so good. And I found the service was very good  - another thing I realized in Texas. Everywhere I go, people are super nice! Our waitress handled the group of about 10 ppl like a pro :)

My siblings and I came here after wandering around downtown Dallas for a bit.

We got the No Bull Mushrooms, roadhouse burgers, and the Gentleman's cut (hehe) pepper smoked sirloin.  Oh and the banana pudding.

The mushrooms were surprisingly light for something that was fried, but was overkill with the ranch dressing.  It would have been better with a remoulade or something that had some kick.  My roadhouse burger hit the spot...I did want a burger after all.  You could actually taste the Dr. Pepper Sauce, which was pretty interesting, but the bacon in the burger made everything taste like bacon.  Don't get me wrong, I love me some bacon, but when you get a sandwich that is toting Dr. Pepper Sauce, you kinda want to taste the sauce.  It was still pretty good.  Hit the spot.  The sirloin was pretty good.  The pepper crust certainly had a decent amount of flavor, but it probably would have been even better Medium Rare.  Banana pudding is pretty hard to screw up, and Hoffbrau's banana pudding is pretty decent.

Overall, it was ok.  When I went there, the service was pretty good (we had a waiter named Chris).  If I find myself back in that direction, I probably would look for somewhere else to eat, but eating at Hoffbrau's wasn't a bad experience.  The prices weren't that bad, and the food wasn't that bad either.

I cannot get enough of the jalapeno shrimp! They are absolutely the best way I have ever eaten shrimp; and a many a shrimp I have had.
In fact, for appetizers, I have to have the fried pickles, no where else has even thought of the concept. Then do I add the potato skins?,Yes and the fried okra... but I must leave room for the quail! Also my favorite. I keep going to the Arlington, West End and Ft. Worth locations. I have always had the best BBQ, steaks and quail and would never go anywhere else. Why be disappointed when I've had the best?

Had gone 8 years ago, and it sucked.

    This time it was okay.

Got soup, mediocre.  The bread wasn't bad, but not great.
Service was good.  Manager came by 3 times, which I respected.
But twice when I had issues, I got BS answers, though he fixed one of the issues with no charge.  So good and bad.  Think he is used to tourists who he can BS, but was a nice guy.

Got sausage and ribs.  Both were good.  In another city I would have been happy with both, but for BBQ in Dallas they were not impressive.  Not a bad place this time, just not a destination for me, so unless I am already down there, probably won't make it back.
Won't slam it this time though, overall was okay and not too expensive.

I attended a conference in town and went here with my office mates on our first night in Dallas.  I tried the shrimp wrapped in bacon with Dr Pepper BBQ sauce, and I believe it had jalapeños too, so it was very spicy but sweet with the Dr Pepper sauce.  Overall it was okay.  The service could have been a little better.  One highlight: Trying some Shiner Cheer on draft.

I happened to find an old receipt from Hoffbrau a few minutes ago and I groaned. I can't believe that I have actually been to this place more than once. Forget going to bed right now, I have to write my review now that $50 I wasted on my last meal there is no longer a distant memory.

Wow! I was shocked that this place had a 3 and 1/2 star average. Of course, then I read the 3 reviews. All are from tourists who were probably overjoyed to have any sort of steak here in the land of big hats and bigger cattle. The truth is I can drive up the Tollway and close my eyes and point and find a top notch steakhouse.....or I can drive to the West End for total crap.

The food here is horrible. The service was even worse. They draw you in with the free bus to the AAC but make it difficult for you to actually make it there on time...even if you get there really early. Don't expect refills of soda. Looking for some bread while you wait for meal? Bring a loaf of Mrs. Baird's with you. Food not cooked properly? Suck it up and eat it because your server won't be back to check on you and the food probably won't improve much anyway.

I give the bus driver on the free shuttle 5 stars, however. He was very nice and stopped for people stuck in the rain even if they hadn't sat through the horror of Hoffbrau that evening! Do yourself a favor. Park closer and eat somewhere else. If money is a concern, stop at 7-11 and grab a hot dog. It'll taste batter than anything you'll get at Hoffbrau/

Went here for lunch after checking out the Sixth floor museum.  I sat at the bar, so service was only so-so.  I ordered the Chucks Favorite 7oz Sirloin off the lunch menu for a cool $8.99 along with a 16oz Lonestar Beer for only $2 (apparently this is an all the time price, so that's nice).  The steak came with a salad which was okay, pretty simple: lettuce, red onions, cheese, and tomatoes with the House dressing (a simple vinaigrette).  The steak came with a choice of sides, you had to pay an extra like $1.60 for a baked potato, so I just went with steak fries (I feel like it shouldn't be extra... I can pick up a 10lb bag of potatoes for like 70 cents, but whatever).

I ordered the steak rare and it came probably a little under that (raw, but seared).  I actually like my steak like this, but I'm too afraid to order it.  The steak was beautifully seasoned.  Just the right amount of salt to really bring out the flavor of the meat but not taste salty.  Also, there was some delicious fresh cracked pepper on it adding a nice touch of flavor.  The steak was very good size (probably more like 10 oz), and was very juicy and tender.  The plate had a lot of grease on it, making me think they might not have let the steak rest, or they just rested it on the plate letting the grease make the fries a little wet.  The fries were a little moist, but honestly they taste better with steak juice on 'em.  The free loaf of bread came a little late in the meal (about 3 minutes after they gave me my entree; but that's probably due to the fact I was at the bar, and I think they had momentarily ran out of bread when I arrived).  The loaf was very hot, tasty, and fresh, but not sweet like so many of the breads at steak places.

All in all (despite all my little complaints), it was a delicious meal for a good price in a good location and setting.  Therefore I'd definitely recommend it!

My friend and I stopped into Hoffbrau before heading to a Stars game.  We were greeted by a super duper bartender of awesomeness named Joel, he served us up some cheap beer (on happy hour) I think it was $2.75 or some price similar.

We decided to get an appetizer before the game, but before we could order this basket of Brau Chips or something of the sort were set down before us and yum!  "On the house", best words ever.  So, we scarf them down along with a few beers and a refill of chips is brought to us!!  So nice.

"So, what's the quickest way to get to American Airlines for the game?"

"Oh we have a shuttle it will be here in 5 minutes"

Rad dude, complimentary mooing bus ride to and from the game.

I haven't eaten a meal here yet, but I love this place, I have a feeling that my roommate and I will make it a ritual before Stars games to stop by here for food and drinks.

I can't think of a better place to get the most perfectly prepared steak seared just as asked with Mesquite chips that gives it the most awesome flavor. ice cold fresh salads and warm fresh bread accompany each dinner entree. Its one of the best places for a steak not only in Dallas but anywhere but I am also partial to mesquite chips because it just gives the best flavor. Don't hesitate to eat here. the prices are great especially for the quality.

I'm not much of a steak eater, but I know a good steakhouse when I eat at one, and unfortunately this wasn't one of them.  It wasn't that bad, but it just wasn't that great.

I pretty much resigned to the fact that a really great steakhouse wouldn't locate itself in touristy West End.   So it wasn't a big let down, it was just a bit predictable.  We started with the brau chips - ok, nothing spectacular.  My dish, the sirloin and grilled shrimp was pretty good (juicy, ok seasoning), the atmosphere was roadhouse style, serving drinks in mason jars, and the service was solid.

Nothing really wowed me.  Would I go back, probably not.  I'd venture for some other steakhouses in the area, most definitely.

its like when a romantic comedy comes on tv: would you buy the movie? hell no, but if it happens to come on on a lazy saturday you'll sit thru it, even chuckle a bit, and not regret it....

hoffbrau's the same way: if your friends want to go, sure why not, but since i don't work in the west end anymore - i have no desire to go back

oh they do have a nice outdoor seating area

My co-worker and I enjoy coming here whenever we visit the Dallas area. The bbq and steaks are excellent as well as the steak soup. Portions are excellent for the price!
