a few weeks ago, lauren and i met up at hofbrauhaus to scope it out for the upcoming cincinnati imports happy hour (on july 21... you should come!). hofbrauhaus is a beer garden/restaurant in newport which is originally from germany and as far as i know, it's the only authentic hofbrauhaus in the united states.
the place is huge. you walk in and it's cavernous. table after table after table. outside, there's a nice big patio. usually they play live (presumably german) music. they have a menu of german food and a list of german beers. and they have ash trays in the bathroom stalls. i'm not sure if that is german or just because it's in kentucky (sorry kentuckians, i couldn't resist).
lauren got the fish sandwich and i got the reuben, and we split an order of potato pancakes. everything was damn good and i had enough left over that i had lunch the next day. we both got a small beer also. the potato pancakes were delicious... hot, crisp, big, and served with applesauce and sour cream. yummy. my reuben was also excellent. lauren got the fish sandwich, which she liked. the fries were seasoned and tasty.
it's not a bargain... i think we probably spent $20 each. but you are going for the ambience and the quality. if you want cheap you're in the wrong place. hofbrauhaus does have a happy hour during the week (4-7 i think) when beer is $1 off. i actually have no idea if they serve drinks other than beer. i have never tried to order that. the beer, which they brew themselves, is delicious and highly alcoholic. it's everything i'm looking for in a beer.
in the summer it's really fun to sit outside on the patio and drink your afternoon/evening away. the hofbrauhaus does get pretty rowdy, especially on weekend nights, and it is a favorite location for bachelor/bachelorette parties, and large mobs of frat boys. so just be warned. i've never been at that time but i've heard it's crazy, but can also be a lot of fun if you are in the mood for that.
Hofbrauhaus is just on the other side of the bridge from downtown Cincinnati - easy to get to on your way though the city. The food was much better than I expected and turned out to be an awesome stop for lunch.
I was of course on the bike, so I couldn't try the huge selection of beers.
The beer here is really unparalleled anywhere else in Cincinnati. It tastes extremely fresh, very drinkable yet very flavorful, and the seasonal brews change every month!
I had the Prussian Export August seasonal and it was incredible.
Add in the sausage and the beer garden, and this place is unstoppable. The beer is so fresh and delicious, that you'll be craving it. Seriously. It tastes way better than anything bottled, and defines Cincy area as having a fantastic beer destination. The only other place you can get your fix is in Munich, so take advantage of the Hofbrauhaus!
Stopped in during a road trip in from Detroit after the Reds game. Place was off the hook. Jammed with about 9 bachelorette parties, had a very festive vibe. Their Premium beer was crisp and had a good flavor.
Prost was the house band and kept the room moving all night. Haven't lived 'til you have heard "Goin' Back to Cali" & "Centerfold" done by an oompah band.
Didn't notice the smoke too much. Must have been overwhelmed by the pretzel frau Reagan. Great place, great time. Circled for a return visit next year.
If you come to the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky area and don't stop here, you are not allowed to say you visited the area. :)
My friend and I first passed this place while trying to find a place to park at Newport on the Levee across the street. I knew, from the moment I laid eyes on it, that I -had- to stop before I went back to DC.
Cincinnati is rich with German history, and the Hofbrauhaus is a perfect fit. I noticed that it is well suited for everyone, regardless of the size of your party, as long as you're in the mood to enjoy yourself and have a good time.
Sitting inside takes you back in time, or at least to a neighborhood in Germany. There are no tables for two in this joint; everyone can share tables or bring all their friends and their friends to sit at the tables.
We came in fairly early and it was a good thing. It was a perfectly beautiful May evening, but there was a game Reds game going on that night, so the place really started to get crowded with pre-game diners. We elected to sit outside since I loved how big it was.
I started with a beer sampler that consisted of a light beer, an original draft beer, a Dunkel, a Weissen, and a Maibock (their seasonal beer). My favorite turned out to be the Weissen, which was so easy on the palette.
We also ordered the pretzels with the beer cheese. They were soft, chewy and were good enough to eat the next morning when we began our road trip back to DC. This is a big appetizer for two people, so just know that going in. :) The cheese is wonderful and goes perfectly with the pretzels. Very, very addictive but will fill your stomach up fast. As a side note, we had one each and save the others for the road trip back to DC in the morning.
I went with the bratwurst, which came with sauerkraut and fries. OMG--cooked just right. My friend chose the two meat dish and got one mettwurst and one bratwurst. His order came with mashed potatoes and he loved every bite.
I can't say enough about this place, but the biggest draw for me is the ambiance; good times are being had all the way around, so you're bound to enjoy yourself and have some damn good food while you're at it.
The first impression of the Hofbrauhaus is the stench of stale cigarette smoke. Not exactly the first thing you want your guests to experience when they walk in the door. Also, whose bright idea was it to walk customers through the smoking section to get to the (barely) non-smoking section of the restaurant? If you want to kill your respiratory compromised customers, this is a fine way to go about it.
The food is not memorable. The pretzel buns are tasty, but a little difficult to hold. Both the schnitzel and ham sandwiches were pretty bland, and the German potato salad was both vinegary and way too sweet.
All in all, the Hofbrauhaus was kitschy and just a little too cutesy "Look how German we are!" and a lot less on good food. I'm sure the beer is good, but I'd rather spend my time in a place where I don't have to be drunk to appreciate its charms.
Hofbrahaus is larger than life. The tables are huge, the beers are huge and my hangover the next day is a nightmare.
Go there if you plan on drinking your weight in delicious house-brewed beer and dancing (contorting) to the awesome polka band they have on weekends. During the summer it's insane, mostly outside. I got sick of fighting the crowds on weekends so weekdays became my preferred nights to binge on that German delight.
Also go early if you have a large group or want a table, esp on the weekends. It's like a stakeout by 11. And don't stand on the tables, only the benches, because security will yank you down so hard you'll spill your 8 dollar beer.
And please, don't think you're awesome by not participating in the chicken dance. It's mandatory.
We've eaten here at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport and also at the one in Vegas. Its very good German food, I must say! I've been to Germany and tasted very authentic German food. The Hofbrauhaus has a fun atmosphere and environment for everyone to enjoy! If you go there on a Saturday night, you get to hear the oom-pah pah band play and it just takes you back to Germany.
The beer tastes exactly like in Munich! And that is already a good enough reason to deal with their fake Bavarian interior and the strangely dressed waitresses in striped kneehighs and pseudo "dirndel" dresses. The food is terrible...absolutely un-Bavarian...so, drink and go for dinner elsewhere!
Simply put, I LOVE THE HOFBRAUHAUS! Ahem..'scuse me, my love for all things Hofbrauhaus may have just taken control of me..but only for a second.
Anyways, my first foray into German food was about 3 years ago on my first trip to Kentucky/Ohio. My cousin took me to her favorite German Beerhouse (Guess where?), and my love affair began. I was treated to sauerkraut balls, fried dill pickles, bavarian pretzels with gooey cheese. Then came my main dish, the pork schnitzel something or other. It was awesome, but I'm a sausage girl at heart, and my next 3 trips to Ohio had me wolfing down their 3 sausage platters each time. Their saurkraut is tart, red cabbage sweet, and brautwurst juicy and succulent.
I love this place. I love being able to sit cafeteria style on big wooden tables with intials carved in to them. I love the Bavarian band, and standing up on my chair to do the chicken dance. Back during my first trip, the waitresses all wore St. Paulie Girl uniforms which made the experience even more authentic. Now they just wear sweaters with the Hofbrauhaus logo, but maybe it's just cause they're tired of be ogled by drunk frat boys.
What I also miss are the tiny beer stein shot glasses! What happened to those? Now when you get shots, they're in regular shot glasses. I guess maybe they had to change since people were stealing the beer stein shot glasses as souviners (I know I was!).
I come to Kentucky/Ohio about twice a year, in fact my next trip is during the last week of January. I'll only be there for 4 days, but you can bet one of those nights I'll be at the Hofbrauhaus singing my heart out, waving a beer stein in the air, and leaving happily, full of german food at it's finest.
Hofbrauhaus is undeniably one of the best places to go in Greater Cincinnati. And personally, I believe it is a catelyst to the Kentucky side of the riverfront taking over the pouplarity of the city of Cincinnati.
As the Kentucky side of the front bulks up, it is sure places such as Hofbrauhaus and Arnies, are great places to go no matter what time of day or week. After Red's games, after a movie at Newport on the Levee, as well as on the weekends.
The pretzels and beer cheese are delicious. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is loud and involved, which is nothing less than amazing.
The only gripe I have is its popularity is outgrowing its size. It gets PACKED on the weekends, So leaving your table can be a problem. But heck you dont even have to leave your seat, you can just stand on your bench and just dance.
Parking can be rough, I recommend parking in the Levee and walking over
I went on a Saturday afternoon and sat at the bar for lunch. Randy, the bartender was super nice and attentive, which I appreciated. There was a live band that was more silly than fun. They kept encouraging crowd participation which I wasn't fond of while I was trying to eat but I had a good laugh at all the folks doing the chicken dance.
I had a beer and the ham + cheese on a pretzel bun, which was exactly what you'd expect it to be. Nothing special, but I still ate almost the whole thing. Oh! We tried the fried pickles since a friend recommended them. They are breaded and served with a ranch dipping sauce. They were definitely tasty but I think I'm going to experiment with making my own (slightly healthier) version. I'd recommend them, though.
I couldn't help but be bothered by all the cigarette smoke from other diners. Living in NYC, I guess I'm just used to not having to deal with secondhand smoke while I'm eating (or in any building) and it made me miss the smoke-free environment.
If I ever go back, I think it'll just be to drink good beer...
So there's this thing at http://GoFugYourself.com they call "scrolldown" fug, e.g.: Nice hair, cute top, nice skirt, OMG AAAHHH THE SHOES!!!! This process could be reversed at the Hobrauhaus:
Cute kneesocks
Nicely shaped gams
Cute shorts
Cute top
Pigtails
WTF?!?!?!
People, no 50-year-old woman should be forced to wear kneesocks and shorty-shorts just to earn a living; I don't care how awesome her bod is. It's just jarring. Do not barmaids in Germany wear pants?
The waitresses were nice though and they are by no means fug; just dressed in really unfortunate outfits. Perhaps this is a calculated move to get us to buy more beer.
I didn't drink beer. Had one mixed drink which was nicely done considering I was at a brewhouse. Chicken sandwich was fine. It was nice to sit outside on a very large gravel patio on a temperate night. Bathrooms in close proximity. Crowd seemed inoffensive enough. Ample parking. Bring a designated driver.
The Hofbrahaus just simply isn't as good as you'd want it to be. It seems so promising: a genuine biergarten located right next to Newport on the Levee with a really nice patio area and really good beer and pretzels with cheese.
Unfortunately it just doesn't work out that way. I'm sure the beer is fine but the pretzels I'd heard so much about weren't very good and a sandwich I got was reeeally dry. The patio is okay and the theme inside worked well, but Hofbrahaus kind of falls flat when you aren't inebriated.
i love ordering food that i can't pronounce and i love drinking. therefore, i love hofbrauhaus.
the food is so so good, i think i've tried just about everything on the menu after going there 3 times with groups of people. the fried zucchini appetizer is amazing. the cheese they give you for the pretzels is unbelievable. the beers are good and they have a nice selection of riesling for my wine-loving self.
i wouldn't categorize it as "cheap" but you can definitely get dinner and a few drinks for a very reasonable price, all things considered.
and where else can you stand on your table and dance to accordion music.... DURING dinner?
we have a such fun every time we go... if only they'd do something about the cigarette smoke, this would be my favorite place ever!
One of the first places I head when the weather is good and I want to relax on an average weeknight is the Biergarten at The Hofbrauhaus. Its such a good place to chill out with some friends and talk with an awesome view of the skyline as a backdrop.
I avoid this place on the weekends, its just too crowded, though if I had friends from out of town visiting, I'd take them here for at least one beer, regardless of the day.
I've never had the food, but the beer is always excellent. Last night I had the Oktoberfest which was top notch. I'm not much a fan of the Dunkel, but that's just personal preference. I try to just try the interesting seasonals, the Premium Lager is my staple otherwise.
One thing that bothers me is the early closing during the week, especially in the summer. They try to run you out of there at 11 o'clock (their closing time seems kind of arbitrary, as I've been there well past midnight on some weeknights), and the staff can get kind of rude when this time rolls around (this has happened on more than one occasion), and if you're like me and you're out for some drinks, you're just getting into the swing of things at 11.
Totally German! I loved it.
I went on a saturday afternoon, avoided the five dollar parking by parking on the street with the meter. Payed 25cents for an hour!
The Beer was delicious, the food even though I had none looked authentic on the menue.
There was even a dude playing german Polka.
For full disclosure, I am german and anything that serves authentic german food has my vote!
Beer-Wunderbar....Food-Nicht so gut
Go for the beer and grab a soft pretzel from the lovely Frauleins who make the rounds, but don't bother messing with the entrees; they're far from authentic. Trust me, I've really, really tried to like the food at Hofbrauhaus. For an area with such a rich German heritage, there are a dearth of good German restaurants. So I want to like the Schnitzel, Kartoffelsalat, etc, etc... but every time it's less than stellar.
Oh, and don't try to steal the mugs...they will catch you.
I dined here with some out of town guests the other night and had a great dinner. I grew up in Cincinnati and have never actually been to this restaurant before!
The first thing I noticed was the beer garden (biergarten), there were people outside drinking and smoking. I would have wanted to sit outside as it was a nice evening, but I can't stand the smoking. We went inside and were seated in the smaller of the two gigantic eating halls. The ceilings and decorations were really cool.
We all chose a beer to drink. I tried the Weizen beer which was a light beer that was delicious and had a nutty aftertaste. I ordered the salmon club sandwich that came on a bagel. It was really good except for the excess of onions and capers which I easily scraped off. My companions dined on sausages, sauerkraut, and sauergraten (beef marinated in goodness). I wasn't feeling an appetite for the traditional German foods so I went for the lighter option.
We had a great waiter and enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a little loud as there was a Reds game on the television, but between the screaming we could hear each other talk.
On a whim, we decided to have dinner at Hofbrauhaus. We ran in on a rainy day at 6:30PM and had a ten minute wait before we were taken to a booth in the back of the main room (there are two rooms and a Biergarten, we sat in the room where the Polka Accordionist was playing).
We had a few coupons so we ordered the beer sampler to start, for $3 we received five miniature beers, each one a selection from the beer brewed at Hofbrau. My favorite was the Weizenbock, Hofbrau's current seasonal beer. My friends enjoyed the Hofbrau Light. I ordered a "1/2" Wizenbock, which was still a good 24 oz of beer, I couldn't finish it after we devoured the soft pretzel appetizer (not as good as Fox & Hounds!) and my Reuben Sandwich (realllly good kraut!).
Our server was very friendly and told us about each one of Hofbrau's dishes and unique beers that we asked about. Almost the entire menu is German and many are not familiar with the cuisine or the language, but if you ask you'll get a full explanation as to the dish. My friends had the Weinerschitzel and the Brats, they loved both.
Make sure to take some Excedrin and some Tums with you...you'll need the pain killer for the headache you're sure to get from the loud Polka music and you'll need the Tums for your inevitable heartburn.
The great thing about Hofbrauhaus Newport is the huge patio, known as the Bier Garden, which is a great place to eat and/or enjoy a beer in the warmer months. I like the garden burger and the fish sandwiches are also good. I haven't tried the potato pancakes or sausages, which I'm sure is why some folks go there. They brew their own beer on site.
Indoor seating is a little loud, due to the live German music ; although there is a separate room for a quieter meal. On a fall Sunday evening, the service inside was extremely slow and the food was just ok.
Loud oom-pah beats & accordians? Check.
Steins of beer as big as your head? Check.
Hundreds of peopld dancing on tables? Check.
Hand claps and mug clinking? Check.
All this...in KENTUCKY?
It's magic...you know.
Never believe it's not so.
I relocated to Cincinnati a few months ago for the summer, and this bar has been one of the highlights of my time here. This isn't the place to go if you want cheap crappy drinks and blaring rap music.
Go to the Hofbrauhaus if you want to drink great unique beer, and enjoy the flexibility to either chill out with friends in the large beer garden with a great view of the city OR dance on tables to the great German bands indoors.
I've yet to eat anything here besides the Bier Pretzels (which went great with the drinks), so I can't vouch for the overall food quality.
That being said, I see myself coming here plenty of nights the rest of the summer.
Friendly advice: Plan on taking a cab if you want to really enjoy the liters of beer. I'd hate to be the designated driver here.
good beer + gallon milk jug of a glass = Hofbrauhaus...
Hofbrauhaus = fun time
Check out the beer garden in the back. It's great.
Omm pah music is great.
Going around the haus in a conga line is pretty fascinating.
You haven't lived until you've danced an a table here! (okay, i am exaggerating) but oh golly, is it fun!
The Haus is too far of drive for me to come on a regular basis, this place will be missed!
Newport, KY was selected as the second location outside of Munich to receive the blessing of the old country and to construct the first new Hofbrauhaus since 1968. Needless to say, they did not half ass it.
Hofbrauhaus is one of the best places to enjoy yourself in the Greater Cincinnati area for many reasons. One of which is the fact that there are only a few locations in the world that one can visit this brewery/restaurant. This distinction makes the bar a uniquely Cincinnati experience and there is a wonderful view of the skyline from the outdoor beirgarden.
Secondly, if you are looking for quality German food, look no further. I have dined here multiple times and the food has always been very good. I would recommend sticking to the more traditional foods since the more standard restaurant fare is comparatively unimpressive.
Finally, the beer here is top-notch. Whether you are having a half-liter with dinner, or drinking 2-3 liters on a Friday night with friends, you will never be disappointed. Some first time patrons may feel that the drinks are expensive as a liter of the standard Lager is 7.75 and some seasonal liters can reach up to 9 dollars. However, the liter mugs are equivalent to about three standard bottles and the beer is of a much higher alcohol content than a standard beer like Bud Light. Therefore a single liter of the Hofbrauhaus beer is usually equivalent to about 4 normal bottled beers, balancing out the price significantly. If you are going for the first time I highly recommend the Original Lager and Dunkel beers. These are available year-round and are always tasty. If you are looking to be a bit more adventurous select that month's seasonal beer. The seasonal brews are released on the final Wednesday of the month and are served until they run out of kegs. I have personally tried about half of the seasonal beers and they are all wonderful. Whether it's the light and crisp Pilsners of June and July, or the extremely potent Doppelbock and Weizenbock of February and November (you can only buy those 2 in 1/2 liters at a time!) you simply cannot lose.
The best part about The Hofbrauhaus is the atmosphere though. During the summer months you spend a fun night with friends outside in the garden. When the temperature drops, you can sing and dance on the tables in the main hall until you can't stand anymore. If you consider yourself a fan of German food and beer, or you just want to have a great time, you absolutely cannot pass up on this local gem.
Fun atmosphere, pretzels and cheese are a good appetizer and the beer is great. Not quite the original but a good second for the States. The Chicken Song got on my nerves a little, they need to switch up the music a bit more.
This place was kind of a let down. And sure, people may have hyped it up and when it didn't meet expectations, this rating may be a bit lower, but if you're going to recommend a place you gotta stand by it. I can't really speak to the beer here as I'm not really a drinker, but I can talk about the food.
I came here with 2 friends (and some random girl one of my friends was "dating" at the time) and we figured we'd get a good feel for the food by getting a mix of all the food. The only taste I can vividly remember is SALT. Everything, and I mean everything seemed to be saturated by it. And I know most of these meats are supposed to be salty, but not this bad.
I give it two stars because our server was super friendly, plus the ambience of the place is pretty interesting. Ever see that movie Beerfest? Yeah, it looks just like the place where they were competing.
A very big German beer haus, lots of long tables and live German music, just like Bavaria. The beer is great, served by the litre, I tried both the larger And dunkel and both were excelent. The food is not for me, I had the Pork Schnitzel and my friend had Beef Nudeln, both not what I remembered. The biergarten is perfect on a summer evening with friends, and maby the pretzels next time.
If you like German beer by the litre, and have never experienced a German biergarten this is a must at least once.
Everyone stopped and turned to look at us when we walked in.
It was sort of like a movie, except not as fun. Perhaps they are not used to seeing a gaggle of half Pilipinos from the west coast?
Great if you like huge beers at big communal tables! My German mother would have told me I ought to know better.
Based off the original Hofbrauhaus in Munich, this is an authentic German biergarten. For me, it's entirely too loud, crowded, and reproductive (as in copying, not childbirth). For a lot of others, it's amazing. The atmosphere and Oompah band are always festive, so it is a suitable place for a party, especially since the band will play some sort of birthday song for the celebrant. Participation in the music and dancing is essential, especially on top of the long benches and tables.
The beer is very good. It's brewed on the premises and is therefore about as fresh as you can get. All classic German styles are available, and they have monthly specialties, too. Making it even better is that you can buy it by the liter, which will give your forearm a good workout.
The food is also good, especially with the beer. What is better with a dunkel lager than a massive pretzel with beer cheese? Two such pretzels, I guess. Well, you can get that here, and full dinner fare (think sausages, schnitzels, and potatoes) if you're around for a meal and not just revelry.
What does actually entice me to the 'haus is the back patio. It's not plagued by the Oompah band and it's not cramped like the interior. On a summer night, with a stein of beer and a group of friends, this is good. Ein prosit!
I had a tame experience here compared to what some of the other reviewers are talking about, but I believe it was a Monday when we checked it out and Bengals fans were whooping it up outside "Who Dey" style for the first game of the season (they weren't at the Hofbrauhaus though ... maybe that's why it was so empty).
We sat outside and ordered a beer sampler each, which came with sweet miniature beer mugs. Service was good and friendly and the beer was mostly good (though I can't remember which ones I liked now). Not a bad place to check out if you're in the Cincinnati area.
Although I'm usually a firm believer that no place that lets you dance on the seats to accordion music and serves you beer in a mug the size of your head should offer valet parking, it works... Great place for parties...
Just a tip - if you're a chick and you're wearing high heels, don't attempt the gravel patio.
The pretzels and cheese are easily the best "appetizer" I've ever had anywhere. That said, the actual dinner left a lot to be desired.
I also enjoyed trying out their in house specialty beer, but could only try one as it was served in a 64oz Big Gulp sized mug that even when empty weighed about 9 pounds. Whichever beer I picked to try (I have no idea everything was in German) wasn't that good so I would have liked the liberty to try some smaller portions.
Oh well. The outdoor seating in the gravel was actually kind of fun.
Best if you're looking for a good beer and a wild night with some friends. Not great for a quiet dinner with the family. It has some decent food, but the thing to go for is definitely the atmosphere and the beer.
If you like to dance on benches with strangers while everyone is drunk and enjoying a very loud live band (don't expect to hear 100% after sitting inside for an hour), check it out on a popular night with a thick crowd.
Dancing on the tables will get you yelled at. :(
If you enjoy getting thrashed with a bunch of fraternity brothers while listening to an authentic German brass band in lederhosen play Happy Birthday twenty times than you'll LOVE it. The beer is rather fabulous but the crowds that frequent this favorite party spot are a little too much for me to handle. Bring your own crowd, draw on the tables and check out the sweet patio but go early if you want to hear the conversations in your party.
I have multiple friends who consider this their favorite bar of all time. I guess there is something to be said for a bar that serves liter beers in 5 pound mugs and lets you dance on the benches while listening to oompah music.
I was DD for my brother and his friends while out on the town. We came in around midnight on Saturday, and even though I was stone sober, had as much fun as the drunk people. Everyone was singing and dancing on the benches, raising their beers having a grand ol time. The crowd was young, mostly college kids getting their oom-pa-pa oom-pa-pas. The liter beers looks most tempting, but I held out, laughed my head off, and made a note to go back when I'm back in town.
It's all worth it for the liter of dunkel! The beer is stupendous and so are the pretzels. The rest of the menu is ok, but hardly authentic (Schnitzel Cordon-Bleu?) The main room can get so loud that it's pretty obnoxious, but the beer garden can be fun on a nice summer night. Really though, it's mostly just fun to drink from a glass that could technically be called a pitcher.
No trip to Cincinnati is complete with stopping at the Hofbrauhaus . You will almost think that you are in Germany ..really trust me . we have been there 3 time to eat and of course drink ...Food and beverages have always been top of the line ......It is a short walk over the purple people bridge to Cincinnati.....Gotta try their seasonal brews and the Prince Ludwig....Servers are all polite and know the menu well . Great gathering spot pregame since the ball park is in the center of a parking lot ...Gotta try this place ...

For starters you can't compare this one to the one in Munich, because let's face it that one is a cathedral built for beer. However, having a replica Hofbrauhaus in your back yard is not too shabby. Bring a large group of friends and enjoy drinking large beers and dancing on tables. I personally recommend the Dunkel beer.
