At 7 am, where can you get a hot healthy breakfast?  Hobee's.  I guess the blueberry or banana coffee cake loaded up with butter ain't exactly healty, but mmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The healthy stuff is like tofu scramble and homemade granola.  Unfortunately in the early 90s Hobee's was like a go to breakfast joint and now not so much.  Still pretty quality breakfast and sands and that cinnamon orange tea scent is so uniquely nostalgic to Hobees.
Do they give a senior citizen discount?  They should atmosphere is like an old healthy diner.

Food = A

Service = B

Price = D-

Overall = B-

I've come here for breakfast a few times and I can't knock them on anything other than price. Their breakfast foods are great. Good taste, not greasy and it feels "quality". Service is nice and friendly and pretty quick.

My one beef is price though. I think pretty much everything on their menu is overpriced.

I've been to this location 3 times in the past year and all have been satisfactory.  A bit pricey, but consistent and satisfactory.  I enjoy getting the Salmon bennie, cup of coffee, and their famous warm coffee cake with a side of extra butter for the heart.

Eggs benedict is like crack to my taste buds, but a daily helping is a no-go at Hobees since it's only served on Fridays.

There goes my 4th star.

My girlfriend talked me into going. I should have known that it would have been awful when I noticed that they didn't have any beef or pork on the menu- just turkey.

I was able to get through the entire newspaper before my food came out, so the service was really slow.

Once we got our food, it lacked flavor and was poorly made in general. We should have gone to the Denny's next door instead.

Hobee's is a great place for Breakfast! And pretty much the only good place for breakfast in Sunnyvale.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is because sometimes its overly crowded, even though I've never waited more than 15 minutes to be seated. And the bathrooms are disgusting. I'd hold it if I were you.

Normally, I like to write reviews strictly based on quality of food. This hobee's like all others in the bay area serve pretty good breakfast/bruch food. But, unlike the other Hobees around the bay, this one has really bad service (based on multiple trips). DON'T GO HERE. Go mountain view, or cupertino (probably the best one).

I love Hobbee's. The food is very good and always consistent. I have had almost every single thing on the menu over the years and have never had a bad meal. I have been here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner without a problem. They did take my TWO favorite items off the menu but they  will make one of them for me if I request it. (Grilled Mushroom and cheese sandwich) I love the coffee cake topped with whipped butter and their hash browns rule!

This location has spotty service. It can be very slow at times for no reason whatsoever. Sometimes the waiters lallygag around and other times they are spot on. I guess it depends on their mood? Otherwise, this is location is easy to get to, has a decent parking lot, and is very clean inside. It can get very busy especially for Sunday brunch when the church crowd comes in.

Overpriced.  $9.25 for their Florentine Bennie, which is Eggs Benedict but with spinach and mushrooms replacing the ham.  Came with a choice of coffee cake, toast, or hashbrowns.  I got the blueberry coffee cake and it was good.  The Eggs Benedict was also $9.25.  My friend ordered the Florentine scrambled with hashbrowns.  The hashbrowns were very good.  The waitress dropped our side order of  toast.  After about 15 minutes, we had to ask her where was our toast.  So, for Florentine Bennie, Florentine Scramble, side order of toast, and 2 ice teas, the total was over $25.  Go to Denny's next door for breakfast.

We have only been for breakfast, and we have never been disappointed.  My husband loves their blueberry cake.  Sometimes their pancakes are doughy, but they are typically really good.  It's a random locations, close to the freeway - but its cute inside.

Been waiting for 50mins for our meal (party of 4) and people who arrived after our party are being served. Was going to take pics of the meal and upload em but now I don't give a f$$$. Making a burger isn't rocket science..how long can it take to slap between two pieces of bread and put some premade tortilla chips on the side?

---Update: Manager comped our meal, but not coming back to this place.

I'm a breakfast guy. It's my favorite meal of the day. And Hobee's is always a solid choice. As soon as you walk in, you are overwhelmed by the smell of coffeecake. MMMmm! Breakfast time! Their chorizo scramble is one of my go-to items.

This location gets pretty crowded on weekday mornings. More suits than you'll encounter in a year, if you work at your typical Sunnyvale-ish type company.

Most importantly, don't let the fact that it sits in front of a Motel 6 fool you. (In fact, there's another Motel 6 on the other side of the street; you may feel like you're in Motel 6 land...)

It's definitely worth a stop.

Meh. Eggshell in my eggs. A hair in my eggs. I don't think they liked my eggs. People who sat down at table next to ours before us got their food just as we were leaving. They waited for an hour. When I told the waiter about the egg and hair I got an "eh" and that was it. When I told the manager, he made us wait for five minutes, but then hardly even told us sorry. It was enough to have to wait, and we weren't asking for anything off, but why could only the manager handle our check if he wasn't going to at least even take the eggs off? Frustrating, and the coffee cake wasn't worth the hair and eggshell.

I grew up in Palo Alto and have been going to various Hobee's  in the Bay Area since I was a little kid so for me, part of the appeal of Hobee's is the comfort factor of nostalgia and continuity. The much-loved blueberry coffee cake with crumb topping and cascade of melty whipped butter is still around, and still good, some twenty years after I first started ordering it. They've done a good job keeping the favorites on the menu around while adding and updating some selections to stay in tune with changing food interests and priorities.

In my experience Hobee's is only really good for breakfast. They do have a lunch and dinner menu but nothing I've tried on it over the years has been particularly impressive. The breakfast menu, however, is solid. They do particularly nice things with egg scrambles, mixing together a good balance of flavorful protein and veggies in eggs cooked just right, not runny, watery, or dry. The energy blend smoothies have a good fruit flavor and aren't too sweet. One order is plenty for two people. I never get pancakes at Hobee's-- I suspect that   I tried once or twice a long time ago and they weren't very good.

Hobee's stands out for the number of dishes that are vegetarian or can be made veggie.

I see a lot of reviews here talking about bad and/or slow service. I can't say I've ever really had bad service here, but I've never had very good service here either. People are usually reasonably friendly and I've never had much trouble with food timing, but once your main dishes are served it can be hard to chase down coffee refills and the final check.

The service has been bad every time I've been here. Many times they have not spoken English.  For the price of the food, this seems rather silly.

The only reason I will come here is because of the coffee cake and the spice tea.

Ok, my coffee cake was good, warm and melty butter, yum.  Of course, the server slammed it down and it was broken and crumbling all over.

My omelet was fine, although nothing to write home about and not very big.  (I had a mountain view omelet).   $9 and still hungry?  not good.

My wife had pancakes.  $9 for 2 eggs, 2 bacon and 2 cardboard pancakes that taste like somewhat tender rubber floormats?  bleh.  I think we would have been better off printing a nice picture of pancakes on high fiber paper and munching on that.   My wife was staring wistfully at Denny's the whole time.

You know that when you leave a restaurant after a meal with a hankering for Denny's that it wasn't a great value.  $25 for two and left hungry and unsatisfied.  Next time, it's a Grand Slam breakfast for us!

They have had some of the same servers here since I was in high school, and you can tell that they officially hate thier jobs. The last two visits to this particular location have been wretched between long waits for food (and in one case smoothies), wrong orders and servers who just want their shift to end. I don't blame them, after 10 or so years, anyone could get sick of thier job.

On the plus side, the food is always tasty and there are other locations in the Hobee's family nearby.

If you are here with a friend, request the FRONT room.

If you are going here with a family with lots of screaming kids - you will be relegated to the BACK room

Just a heads up.

I give this place four stars because I have chosen not to have kids and they are sensitive to the fact that I like to eat in peace.

That said, I recommend the "Mountain View Omlette" with extra sauce

WOW

Need I say more. This is such a quaint little place to eat at.  The menu is huge, and it is definitely a vegetarian's heaven.  There are so many options, and on top of all that, they actually know what tofu is (its suprising how many restaurants don't serve tofu as an option to meat).

I had the portabello ravioli with basil pesto, which is a winter special.  The serving size was just right - I liked how the prices were very reasonable, and its ok if portions aren't Texas sized.

My husband had the Tofu Scramble and De Anza Hashbrowns from the breakfast menu.  It came with a decent serving of fresh fruit, which looked great.

I would come back here in a heartbeat - I'm sure we'll be taking friends here when they visit as well.  Its such a low key restaurant, and I'm sure it will take several trips before we actually manage to try out the full menu.  The only bad thing was that I was in the mood for dessert, and they did not have any egg-free options.  But that was probably for the best, considering that I'm sure that during the upcoming holidays, I'll have plenty of opportunities to have dessert.

What are you waiting for? Go check out Hobee's!!!

Who says country isn't cool?  That is the first word that came to me when I stepped in this little joint.

KONTREE!  But hey, I'm from the south, I can dig it.

Went here with an associate/aquaintence.  She chose.  She's vegetarian (instant be non-offensive pressure for me).  So we check out the menu.

And then continue to check out the menu.

And then check one more time (It's like 2 whole pages front and back).

And after we ordered our drinks (I got the Hobee's Ice Tea--Cinnamon Orange flavors...WHOA!  Different strokes, and all...not a horrible choice, but tolerable and different, like i said.)

And then we looked at the menu again.

So, we were waiting AWHILE!!!! to get our order taken and then we pick our lunch.  I chose a turkey wrap (minus salsa) and she chose the avocado/tomato/something sandwich.  We both got the salad bar as a topper offer.

Salad bar:  Really good.  Fresh fruit and veggies.  Lots of dressings to choose from.

My sandwich:  Good...not remarkable, but good.

The coolest thing I saw:  Some HONKIN' slices of coffee cake!  Geez!  Height:  Two big phone books stacked (only analogy I could think of)
Dimensions:  about 4 inches by 4 inches by 6 inches tall.  I swear!

Looked great, but I passed.

Seems like a remake of some Mom and Pop place I've been to in a no name town in OK.

I'd go back, but the wait (during lunch on Tuesday)...not cool.

Maybe a better idea for like say 11:00 am or 2:00 pm lunch.

And give the Hobee's Ice Tea a try...but it's a got a buzz to it!

Perhaps better categorized under Museums than Restaurants, Hobee's is a south bay institution, and this particular locale appears to be running on the fumes of great meals past.  Let's not even dare to think of this stuff as healthy, friends, as it's Taco Bell nutrition cleverly disguised as 70's-style "health food."  Nevertheless, it's fun and nostalgic, and being just down the freeway from the Computer History Museum seems only fitting.

Hobee's is a locally-owned establishment with various locations around the south bay and peninsula.  They have great, healthy food for everyone, from vegetarians to carnivores.  And their veggie options are numerous!  Each time I come here it's usually at breakfast or lunch and I'm usually getting a breakfast entree, the Hobee's Cinnamon Orange Tea and coffee cake.

You can never go wrong with Hobee's blueberry coffee cake!  It's always served warm sometimes before your entree, with a butter ball on top oozing down the side of the cake.  There is just the right amount of cinnamon topping that makes you coming back for more!
You will always get a huge slice on a tiny plate, and once you place your fork into it, it never fails to fall over the edge of my plate.  Maybe I'm just a mess eater.

we had reservations for 8 and we walked in and told the guy in front, he looked thru the book and i'm assuming he couldn't find it, so we had to wait a few mins so they could quickly set up our table. but we didn't wait for more than 10 mins... maybe after 5 mins?

i had the french toast strudel? it was slices of french toast w/ banana in the middle. it was on the 'too sweet' side. Some people like that, but for breakfast it was a little too much, so i ended up taking the banana out and had regular french toast, but it had slivered almonds on top which added great texture to my french toast and i still dipped it in a little bit of syrup.

as everyone says, the blueberry coffee cake is DELICIOUS! they give you a huge block of cake w/ a melon ball size of softened butter melting on the warm cake. the butter was a little crazy, but the cake i was SO GOOD and warm. i love it. u can probably split between two or three people. i would suggest to get it w/ the hobee's styled hash potatoes to balance all this sweet w/ some salty so your taste buds don't go too crazy.

decor wise, it was like a denny's but with a huge salad bar.

service was ok, pretty much what you get at any denny's, ihop, etc...

Tofu scramble!!!!  Thank you, Hobee's, for thinking of the bunnykissers.
I kind of expected this restaurant to be a little grimy cause it's in such a random location and connected to a cheapy motel... but it was clean, fresh, and actually pretty cute.  The tofu scramble was fantastic, and my coffee cup never went empty.  It did take them quite a but of time to take our order and bring out our food, which I almost penalized them a star for... but upon reflection, we had coffee and pleasant conversation in that wait time, and that's what a lovely casual breakfast is all about.  I will be back soon.

I had the Prune yard Omelet. inside it you find Turkey bacon, Mushrooms, spinach, red onions, Swiss cheese. Topped with a drizzle of Sun dried tomato pasto. I actually enjoyed it.  I was a Little put off by the fact that you can have "One" of the following, hash browns, or toast or Blueberry coffee cake. I asked for the side of hash browns and was charged for the side of coffee cake, about  $1.00 more. Crystal, my server was friendly, but after taking my order, took the order of the table next to me, who came in after me and they got food first. I got my breakfast 10 minutes later. I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS. They got the same type of food, so it was not a matter of cooking time. I think it is most fair to input the orders as you get them, not by the age of the customers. Other than that I may go there again.

I really thought that when I sat down at Hobee's and looked at the menu  I would be giving it more than three stars. Hobee's delivered on a few crucial areas, but fell short on a couple instances. But they will be getting another chance with me, and I'd absolutely recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a great breakfast.

THE OPTIONS:
The menu is awe inspiring for the vegetarian crowd--in fact, my wife and i were forced to turn away the waitress when we couldn't make our minds up. I love me some American-Mexican breakfasts, and Hobee's certainly delivers on this one. A huge item of note for any lacto-ovo vegetarians is that any of the recipes containing chorizo can be substituted with Soyrizo. My wife ordered a Soy Chorizo Scramble without cheese and it was very tasty, well flavored and a huge stand out from many breakfast place's lame "veggie omelet" options. I myself finally decided on a Santa Cruz Scramble, a garlicky mix of egg, green onion, cheese and salsa fresca that I thoroughly enjoyed. My dad stayed with our theme and ordered a "South of the border omelet," and this, too, was delicious, featuring well-seasoned black beans and cheese wrapped inside fluffy egg and topped with guacamole, sour cream and salsa fresca. You won't find a drop of Pace anywhere in Hobee's, thank god.

As for accompaniments, I am a man who loves his potatoes, and unfortunately this is part of what lead to my rating of three. My wife ordered the tempting sounding "Sweet Potato Hash Browns," for an extra dollar. Perhaps our expectations had been set too high by the likes of Taylor's Refresher or Zebulon sweet potato fries. What we got was a lackluster pile of overcooked, under fried chunks of sweet potato. If the sweet potato hash browns were lacking a pleasant crispiness, the house hash browns weren't much better. Hobee's "hash browns" are more like what I would consider home-style potatoes, chopped and lightly fried potatoes. While I appreciate that my potatoes probably had considerably less fat than typical grated hash browns, I will respectfully say that the browns could have even benefited from some non-stick spray.

The blueberry coffee cake, on the other hand, was a delight-- a huge slice of cake, smothered in butter (ask for it without if you're not a fan!), light, fluffy and delicious. They hinted at a touch of cinnamon and were gobbled up by our table in about a minute and a half. I am definitely a salty-breakfast person, but after my experience with the hash browns I think I'll opt for the coffee cake next time.

THE SERVICE:
Let me start with the good. Many a great breakfast spot has painfully faltered when it comes to the java. Hobee's passed with flying colors. Not only was the coffee delicious, but the restaurant seemed to have three people whose sole job was orbiting the restaurant with two carafes of coffee, filling up glasses. I have never been offered so many refills in my life by so many people other than my server, and I loved every minute of it. To be perfectly honest, by the time I left I had partaken of entirely too much and was suffering from a case of the nerves, but that was nobody's fault but my own. On this count, Hobee's again knocked it out of the park for me, and coffee is a pretty crucial part of any breakfast spot for me.

Unfortunately, on the service side, there were some pretty critical problems as well. First of all, once we did make up our minds and order, the food took quite a long time to arrive. When it did arrive, at least three of our dishes were lukewarm as if they had been sitting out for awhile. My hopeful explanation was that the kitchen made the soy chorizo dish wrong and it was caught by the server, but that would only be a guess. Whatever the explanation, most of our dishes were not as hot as they should be, and that's dealt a pretty big blow to my review.

OVERALL:
I am absolutely going to Hobee's again. My parents, who were visiting from Sacramento, both immediately responded to the menu with the comment that they thought we'd found our new breakfast spot in the area, and I think that had I polled them after the meal they would've held the same opinion.

In this vegetarians view, Hobee's deserves a second chance to deal with the service and maybe even the hash browns. My mouth waters at the thought.

UPDATE/FINAL THOUGHTS: After another visit, I've upped Hobee's do a four. I just can't help myself. The hash browns were considerably better, and while the service wasn't fast, everything came out respectably warm. The coffee service was fantastic, as before, and that brings me to my final warning: TAKE IT EASY ON THE COFFEE. I had to go to Costco (during the holidays) after my visit to Hobee's and I'll be damned if I didn't almost take off about 10 peoples heads as I was fighting my way to check out before I realized I'd had about 3 cups of coffee too many. Know when to say when.

Yeah ... H-o-b-e-e-'s ! !

i yelp'ed, googl'ed and searched far and wide for a joint per my recruiter, called - Hobbes .. and all i got were links to a thinker ...

emailed a Yelp Enhancement request for some "sounds_like" match feature given a value in the City field ...

found this "Hobee's" of Sunnyvale, for a "3rd date" ... third date in job interview parlance means, meet the CEO ...

got there ... oh, so it's beside Denny's on the 101 and Mathilda junction, looks and feel like those diners you'd stop by when in a "Thelma and Louise" road trip..

i SMS/text my Sunnyvale contact " wow, this is a greasy joint!" ... she replies, " LOL, yeah" ...

CEO arrives, we indulge in serious discussion about the industry, him exploring me while i exploring their viability .. we order eventually..

ambience is sooooo Country, reminds me of those Marie Cauldron type of breakfast joints, surrounded by recipes of uber sweets.  Menu was filled with all permutations of omelette... i sipped my coffee, the interview or the "getting to know you" process begins..

pressured to order, we search for sweets .. then i saw the SMOOTHIES in the menu, i ordered the Blackberry smoothie with an energy boost, CEO ordered the strawberry bannana with whip cream ..

it went REALLY great ... really great ... think of  a good date that works... good thing ..

wonderful hot, amazingly hot Silicon Valley afternoon at 2pm - 3pm..

we shook hands, then CEO says ..." Now you have experienced, Hobee's.."  I smiled, yet perplexed inside, after all, this Urban Chic, thought, ahum, and what's special? ..

he continues, " This is a historical Silicon Valley diner, in the mornings," he points to rows of deuce tables, "you will see lines of VC's having breakfast, this is where deals are made... this is a Silicon Valley institution..."

Ok, Urban chic and a geek at heart, was confused ... but maybe understood ... oh ok ... this was indeed an SV institution ... and I was impressed by the very FRESH smoothie and energy boost, we shared, a great interview ... and a wonderful afternoon...

for the smoothie and SV dive, and a very cool wait staff for being patient to take our order, while we delved through my resume, this place indeed deserves a four_star ... a true SV dive.

The last of the Hobee's I've been to. This one has character. It's next to the freeway and has Denny's as competition. One of my co-workers was addicted to their shakes so this was more about a run than actually going to eat here. I did discover the Tamale Pie and of course if you want Coffee Cake...

This is the last chance for Hobees.  We have stopped going to the Hobees in Cupertino and the one on Central Expressway because the service is soooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooooow and the food is not that good.

At this Hobees, the service is a little bit better.  They are very kid friendly and last weekend they brought my son a balloon right away, and a fruit plate smiley face.

We prefer to go to Stacks, but it's more pricey, and the wait is very long if you go after 9am.

UPDATE 8/2007:  Went to lunch here yesterday and had a good experience.  I had the mixed grilled veggie and tofu plate with curry sauce.  It was very good.  I'm uploading a picture of it.

Hobee's is yummy. It is happy warm comfort food. And there are lots of vegetarian things so our vegetarian co-workers can share in the comfort food with us.

The service here isn't the best and they have recently started regrettably including melted bleu cheese in dishes where it really doesn't belong.

But what's up with all of the people complaining about how long the wait is? It's not McDonalds - they have to cook your food. You can chat with the folks you are with or grab a newspaper from the basket by the door and read. Or, you know, you could always go to McDonalds and get your food right away...

However, a big piece of coffeecake with extra butter helps heal all wounds.

Boy, am I glad I was introduced to this restaurant. The place feels a little outdated and homely, which isn't bad if that's your thing. The blueberry coffee cake is what makes stopping in worth it.

Who could resist a generous and warm slice of this cake with melting butter on top? Yum. Oh, as the raspberry iced tea is pretty good too.

Hobees has all the ingredients for a local insider cult favorite.  The food is, of course, top-notch tasty.  It's always packed for breakfast/brunch on weekends.  More than that, though, it has lots of touches that make it endearing among locals.  For those waiting to be seated, they have free spicy tea (okay, not my thing), and they have dishes named after local cities, landmarks, and sports teams.  Their BDBIT (Best Darned Breakfast In Town) is another tasty dish with a cute name, and their blueberry coffeecake is another favorite.  Best of all, if you get your picture taken with a Hobees t-shirt in front of some far-away place, they post it on the wall and give you a free meal!

They used to have one as far north as Emeryville (wish they'd bring it back!), but as far as I can tell they've decided to stick to their south bay roots.

So my previous experience had been at Hobee's in Fremont, and I'll say I wasn't too impressed, so when one of my coworkers wanted to go to the Hobee's here in Sunnyvale for lunch, I was less than than thrilled, but went along anyway.  The atmosphere is quaint, and by quaint I mean a cross between Marie Callendar's and Denny's.  But face it, you go to a restaurant for food.

On my first lunch trip, I ordered a sandwich, while my coworker ordered breakfast.  The sandwich was good, but I couldn't help coveting the omelette on the other side of the table.  After subsequently fixing my ordering mistake, I can definitely say that breakfast is the right order, no matter the time of day.  and the coffeecake is awesome!

Met an ex coworker for lunch on a Friday at 11:30, about a third full when I arrived, by 11:50 the place had a half a dozen people waiting to get in, glad I arrived at the time I did.

Had the special of the day, Florentine bennies, eggs benedict with wild mushrooms, sliced tomatoes and spinach with the August coffee cake of the month, banana with toffee.  Ordered the house orange flavored tea.  I always add milk to cut the bitterness of the tea, makes it mellow.  Around $10 and very good.  Took most of the slice of coffee cake home with me, less the dollop of butter.

The only con, it gets busy so getting a wait staffer to pay the bill is next to nil, go to the cashier to pay so you can leave.

Parking is odd, there are only 6 slots in the front, about 10 on the side but plenty behind the restuarant.  One the weekends it is packed, there are 3 benches outside to sit and wait on.  Nice feature, they offer free tea and coffee if you have to wait outside.  I think all the shops do this, very nice feature.

"Hobees started out as a greasy hamburger stand in Mountain View in the 70s that got healthy. They are now a small chain with several spots in the south bay and on the peninsula. The breakfasts here are hands-down the best around. They have specials that change weekly which is what I normally order but if I order off the menu, the Tamale Pie & Eggs are the best. Service is fantastic. It can get noisy on weekend mornings and they are on the pricey side (we're not talking Denny's here), but I think its well worth it. Oh yes, and please do try the blueberry coffeecake...its what most locals assoicate with Hobees!"
