World Class Hot Hot Surf Action

Locals Only tuf tittas! Go home Barny!

Good god make it easy and get out of the water before you split your mellon after kissing da reef. Ah! ha! Bring the butterflies before you get the butterflies.

Tourist you can watch all the insanity safely from the upper parking lot. This area is under local control so don't even think about it after sunset unless accompanied by a local guide. Welcome to the new world order. Now go home.

After arriving in Kahului and picking up a rental car, one of the first places I always find myself going to is Ho'okipa Beach Park.  I usually just sit in the parking lot overlooking the beach and look down at all the surfers and windsurfers below or head down to the grassy area overlooking the water.  I've only ventured in to the water here once, and I soon realized that windsurfing on a calm lake in New Hampshire and in the ocean surrounding North Maui isn't quite the same thing.  I'm still alive, but luck and not skill saved me from that disastrous idea.

This is a great spot for people who are content watching the action or for those with the high skill level to join in.  I wouldn't recommend windsurfing or surfing here as a beginner--there are much calmer spots on the island where you are less likely to smash your head open.

Ho'okipa Beach is located just past Mama's Fish House on the Hana Highway, between Paia and Haiku.
It is possibly the best place in the world for windsurfing. The sport was largely developed here, and is the site of two major world-class competitions.
Waves can reach 30-40 feet high. Surfing and windsurfing at this beach should be limited to the experts. However, the beach has an 1/8 mile coral reef that makes a pond-like area perfect for taking a dip in the early morning or when the ocean is calmer.
There is an overlook with a large parking area where you can watch the action. The beach itself has a separate parking area, showers and bathrooms. The scent of pakalolo is always in the air here.

Ho'okipa is a great place to surf (am) or windsurf (afternoon).  It's a pretty happening spot, with great breaks, not the place to learn...  watch out in winter with the huge swells.

If you want to enjoy the sun and watch the local talent, there's a gorgeous overlook with parking lot, and the beach also has shaded picnic areas, restrooms, and showers.
