Haven't been here in several years, probably 5+.  This place has gone through many management changes for a good reason.  Food has never been stellar here. I'm not sure how long the current owner has been there.  If you want a consistent, good piece of the pie of the affluent crowd, you need to shine.  Competition is stiff, so everyone needs to step up at least two notches.  The ambience is fine.  Service needs to get better.  Most of all, the head chef and his kitchen staff need to take a short ride to NYC to really understand what it will take to win customers over.  My wife was appalled at the steak she ordered.  A good advice...serve grass-fed beef!

Service iffy. Took half hour for our wait "team" to appeear.  Chicken was a bit dry.   There were 2 desserts to offer,1 with rum raisin ice cream on a souffle, the other vanilla ice cream.  I asked to substitute vanilla ice cram for rum raisin & was told "no" that's a separate dessert.  I mean, they had the vanilla out anyway.   What nonsense.

I gave this a 3, only because we can't give halves...I would have done 2 and1//2 stars.  The food here is not great, I'd give it good.  The service is VERY slow.  Great atmosphere.

We have lived in Ho-Ho-Kus for more than 30 years and have seen at least 3 major makeovers of the Inn as well as several interem tweeks. We were in no rush to experience the latest iteration. However, we finally decided to give it a shot. Having said that, I'm a tad bewildered at it's current success. OK, so it was a Saturday night, but that should be a time to shine not make numerous, albeit minor, service mistakes. In addition you could sense the staff was not harmonious or friendly toward each other. If you have ever dined at a Morton's or Fleming's , you know the same sort of cold calculating business only type atmosphere.
Food was OK, maybe a bit skimpy and overpriced. I think there are better dining experiences in Bergen County at this price level.

I had my son's 1st birthday party here.  i am a super anal, asian martha stewart.  I am very picky and demanding and came in with several boxes of all my own handmade decorations.  I was momzilla on steroids.  The staff was super accommodating and polite.  Service was amazing!!!!  Everyone raved about how good the food was.  It was better than the food at my wedding.  The location itself is so darn charming, I just wanted to live there.  All of my guests raved about the place and now my sister wants to make up an occasion just so she can throw a party here.

I thought the "All Day" menu offered some interesting options for lunch with my friends.  We ordered the House Made Pretzels with Spiced Cheese Fondue, we each had the Lobster Soup, two of us had the Caesar Salad, and the other had the Cobb Salad.

The service was very good as were the Bloody Marys.  The food however, was disappointing.  The pretzels were clearly microwaved and not made to order.  The cheese was good, but hard to eat on the chewy pretzels.  I will say that the Lobster Soup was very good, but pricey at $10.  The Caesar Salad too was very good, though it was really an appetizer portion and not what I expected.  The biggest disappointment was the Cobb Salad.  It was dry, the lettuce was wilted, it was pre-tossed and the egg, bacon, avocado and tomatoes were minimal.  It was not appetizing at all.  In fact my friend didn't even eat the salad and no one asked if there was something wrong.

It was really a shame as the atmosphere and service were very nice for lunch out with friends.  Unfortunately the food did not live up to what I thought the menu offered.

Food is decent but overpriced. Service was attentive without being intrusive.

However, our meal was spoiled because the couple at the next table received a steady stream of visitors throughout the meal, and they invaded our space. We were looking at the dessert menu when a woman came by and plopped down next to me on the banquette and proceeded to yak with the woman at the next table. It would have been nice if she'd asked me if I minded if she sat there.

At that point, we decided not to add any more to the check. I wouldn't mind it at the Allendale Bar & Grill, but not at these prices!

Another thing--they don't leave the bread on the table! They come around and let you select a little roll from a basket, and that's it! But the bread was excellent.

Wife and I decided at the last minute to grab dinner in the bar/tavern area of the restaurant last night.

We had noticed the quality control of the food had been slipping the last few times but decided to give it another try.

The place was quite empty.  There were many staff just standing around doing nothing.

My main problem was with our two main entrees.  The Tavern burger and the roast turkey sandwich.

I will start with mine...the burger.  It seems that whomever is assembling this thing has never eaten a burger before.  It is like a giant meatball on a very small brioche bun.  They pile on lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon and pickles.  This thing is just a huge mess to eat with your hands.  It is just not an enjoyable experience.

My wife's sandwich was roast turkey, bacon, cranberry chutney, brie, whole grain mustard aioli on seven grain bread was her choice for dinner.  It looks like supermarket deli turkey with a skimpy amount of chutney and brie.  It is ridiculous that they couldn't spread out the brie a bit...it was just one lump in the middle of the sandwich.  The chutney was sparce.  She liked the overall taste...well, at least the one or two bites that had a bit of everything.

It would be tough to convince me to return.

My last experience at the HoHoKus Inn was fine, no issues & I looked forward to going back for dinner but that has quickly changed. My mom made last minute reservations for a Saturday night a few weeks ago and took the 5:30pm slot. I was running late by about 15 minutes or so and when I arrived at the restaurant, I was scolded like a child by the hostess for being tardy. After I apologized, she nastily explained that there was another party after us and we would have to be finished by then. Stunned, I walked to the table with my tail between my legs and joined my family. Fast forward to the meal; the food was tasty, overpriced and teeny tiny portions, perfect for dieters. So now we all order dessert, the waiter comes over and says to me that the next reservation canceled so we can "take our time". I said thank you. My parents were like what was that about and I explained the greeting that I received from the hostess. Both were shocked and said had they known we would have left. Needless to say we wont be back. If I were the owner and she was my employee, she would be fired. Kindness goes along way.

The food here was definitely good, but not fantastic. The prices are what you would expect to pay for a fancy restaurant in nyc and the ambiance made this appropriate, but I felt that the prices were high for the flavor we got in return. The crabcakes (a signature dish) were great and the arugula antipasto salad (also a signature) was good, but I've definitely had better. There was just something missing about it... not enough peppers, the flavor of the arugula didn't mesh with the flavor of the dressing... and the dressing didn't have a balsamic/tangy flavor like you'd expect on this type of salad.

As for the main courses... my sisters weren't thrilled with theirs (the salmon and linguini w/ shrimp). The presentation on the salmon and duck w/ berry sauce (my dish) raised our expectations, though the flavor didn't quite deliver. The julienned vegetables on the side were delicious and the duck was enjoyable but I don't know, something about it failed to make me excited about it. So close, but not quite there. My mom subsituted the veal ravioli for the mushroom in a sage butter sauce. The sauce and ravioli filling were delicious, though the pasta itself was either dried out or a bit harder than al dente.

Dessert was also good, though a bit off. The cream on the tiramisu had a peculiar flavor to it... cream cheesey or something, not what you'd expect and it didn't seem to go so well with the liquor taste. My mom ordered the napoleon because she was in the mood for a pastry, not realizing that it was "open faced." When it came out it was a puddle of pastry cream with flakes of pastry dough (looked like cereal flakes) , sliced almonds and berries. The presentation was unimpressive, though it tasted alright. The italian cheesecake was also nothing to rave about.

Overall it was a nice dinner... It was a fancy colonial style restaurant and the ambiance reminded me of (though it was on a much smaller scale) the feel of One if by Land, Two if by Sea in the city. Only I've been dying to go back there, while I wouldn't be upset if i didn't get a return visit here.

Great after work drink at the bar, in a darker tavern feel.  However the food is over-priced and not very good.  The crowd is overly pretentious, and giving off a major country club vibe.  Good for them but not for anyone that is younger or savvy enough to be reading yelp.

The filet mignon sandwich was blah, with a couple fajita steak sized strips buried in grilled onions on a roll. Over-cooked and sloppy.  The Croque Monsieur was a ham sandwich that they dumped extremely salty white cheese on top stuck it in the oven and gave it a french name.  Our name for it would have included an english derogatory word for cheese log.

The same waitress as last time... not great.

I will go back for an overpriced beer because of the atmosphere, but recommend my freinds to try other restaurants for food.

I attended a party at the Inn, newly renovated and reopened.  First the renovations are quite nice the rooms are clean and spare but play up the 1780 building; the bar is lovely and we had a good Bloody Mary, then we had brunch with excellent smoked salmon on homemade very tasty 'bagel' (tasted like a cross between brioche and bagel) with boneless leg of lamb (grilled) and salad.

Service was up and down.  The party had 45 people and two servers who were scrambling to keep up.

I would recommend it; especially the bar which is a cut above the bars in area.

Brought the family back for dad's birthday this afternoon.  Overall a good experience, but a couple of mgmt/training slip-ups should be noted.  But, first of all...the brunch buffet is a good deal...good grain salads that offer a healthy alternative to the french toast (stuffed!) and baked goods.  Burger was delicious, but would be more enjoyable on a larger bun that isn't half-soaked with juices before you begin to eat it.  Bloody Marys had just the right amount of heat (and we do like that bartender!).
However...if some people at the table get the buffet and some don't, it would be better to be told at the time of ordering that $8 is added to the bill if a non-buffet eater eats a buffet dessert (wasn't there a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode that covered that issue?).  And - more importantly - we were a little stunned to find that a 14oz ribeye special was $40.  Server neglected to mention this.  It was good, but....  These are minor issues that mgmt should review with staff -- who are otherwise attentive and good.

I was intrigued to visit the Inn & Tavern when I learned that the establishment had new ownership, new decor and a new menu. Unfortunately, I was disappointed during my recent visit to the Tavern. The decor is okay and food is average. "Pub" standards are the norm here like burgers and sandwiches and salads, and the execution is fine, if not a bit sloppy.

But it appears that it's the service that is really bringing this place down. The service was unorganized and haphazard, and still our server would be missing for 10 minutes at a time. The staff was also arguing in public and a computer error prevented us from receiving our check for 47 minutes (yes, we counted) at the conclusion of the meal. Because of this, we missed our scheduled movie time that evening.

I don't think anyone would go back after an experience like that, especially with expensive prices for typical tavern food. I would ONLY return if the service improved, which at the moment, is very poor.

Very nice menu and an excellent meal in the Inn...can't wait to try the tavern. Expensive, but had a great unique sucking pig dish and they did a great job with oysters and sushi grade tuna. Server was excellent and was very descriptive when necessary. Decor is tremendous....I'm a believer. Only complaint, side of french fries was pricey upstairs at $8 and they were soggy...I assume they were done and being heated under a lamp while my sucking pig was prepared.

The food is quite good although small portions. The Caesar salad is OK but the anchovies do not look like the ones bought at the supermarket. The management philosophy is aimed to discourage clientele who are not big spenders. They will hurry out those tables that are not productive in cash flow. Those who are using Gift Cards most leave tip out of pocket.
