    This place is AMAZING.

I love that it's really the history of Miami, from the beginning till yesterday. I also love that it caters to Miami's melting pot (everything is in English and Spanish). It's extremely interesting and I recommend everyone to go.

Am I the only one who did not go on a field trip to this museum when I was in grade school? If I did, I don't remember.
It was nice to get a view of Florida History. The permanent exhibit is a bit old but it does a good job at laying out our history until about the 40s...the rest was abridged into one room. I liked that I was able to take pictures and touch things...I enjoy doing both.

I like many of you I first went to the Historical Museum of Southern Florida when I was just a buck toothed, little kid glad to be on a field trip.... ahh memories

Perhaps most memorable to me was the trolley. I kept thinking We had a Trolley in Florida? Cool! And wouldn't it be cool if this city had more public transportation options, but I digress soooo....

It wasn't until last year when I was at one of MAM's (Miami Art Museum aka the Historical Museum's neighbor) JAM at MAM events that I began thinking of the old Historical Museum. Maybe it was nostalgia, maybe it was my love for Miami, or maybe it was plain boredom.

Wait I was just kidding about that last one. No, really I was totally kidding.

So anyways, I ended up looking up the Historical Museum and learning about their Historical Tours. These tours range from walking to buses and boats and cover many of Miami's most well known neighborhoods including arguably, the coolest, most loved, iconic neighborhood ever... Stiltsville.

You can find a list of tours on the museum's website although they do take a break or hiatus during summer. Capacity varies by tour and your best bet is to reserve ahead of time especially for the more popular tours. The museum also offer private tours.

A bunch of adults on a 3 hour historical tour kind of reminds me of a field trip for grownups but who doesn't love a new twist on a childhood classic?

Just leave the Z Cavarichis at home this time. ;)

I've visited the Historical Museum of Southern Florida a number of times. I really like history, so that's probably why I've been drawn to it time and again.

The building consists of two floors. The bottom floor holds the current exhibits and the top floor holds the permanent exhibits.

The top floor's permanent exhibition shows everything from the natives to the most recent residents of South Florida. The entire floor is dedicated to it. What I like most about it is that it has, and I know this is for the kiddies, replicas of forts and movie theaters, a trolley, and even a diner from the 50's. It's fun for the adults as well!!!

You can undoubtedly spend the entire day studying all the artifacts.

I believe a trip to the museum is an essential part of being a Miamian.

I really had no intention of going to the Historical Museum. Didn't I get enough history looking at a few posters at the neighboring Main Library? Still, if you paid $10 for a joint ticket for this museum and Miami Art Museum, then I suppose it would have been worth it because otherwise, each individual admission is $8 a person.

Actually, it was WAY worth it. It may not have been a huge place but I spent almost two hours looking at every last thing. There was just so much history for an area (Southern Florida) that really is less than 100 years old (well, in terms of what we consider modern civilization).

The first exhibition I looked at were portraits of mausoleums in the largest cemetery in Cuba. They were strangely beautiful for such a morbid subject. The cemetery reminded me of things I've seen in similar cemeteries, particularly the one in Paris.

Then I started towards the other current exhibit centered around African Americans in Miami, but first I saw the giant lens of a lighthouse. http://static.px.yelp....

It was very awe-inspiring just how large it was.

Continuing upstairs, they had told me to go to my left and make my way around. Naturally, I went right because my instincts are to go right. So, I saw the modern stuff first including this cool trolley.

You're allowed to go inside of it even.

Eventually, I got to the "ancient times" of the exhibit and besides the many photographs, artifacts and models, they also had fossils and bits of stone and rocks. There was a giant "shelf" of fossils that just haven't been extracted yet on display as well an old sea turtle shell.

Oh, and the museum does allow photography if your flash is turned off.

I definitely had a good time looking at everything. I wish the gift shop was a bit better though. Sure, there were some books but there were too many cheap souvenirs including tacky jewelry. Although, I did think maybe the $1 cheapie pendants and seashell animals fit the budgets of school kids.

A visit to the Historical Museum of Southern Florida is essential to an understanding of the natural and anthropological history of the locality.

Its collection ranges from fossils to Indian artifacts about 5,000 years old, to art and accoutrements of the earliest white settlers, to 20th century commercial products and art.  Our visit of December 2008 included a fascinating exhibition of documents, drawings, and other plans for a prospective World's Fair planned for, but never held in, Miami in the 1950's.

In addition to the artifacts, the museum places a strong emphasis on quality black and white photography.

if your into history, its worth going here!

in a city where most people have no clue about out past or just dont care, this place is a gem in the rough.

theres lots to see but its kinda cramped and dull in some places. if your not a hardcore history buff you may find it boring. im a history geek so i really enjoyed my visit. they cover south florida history from way back into prehistoric times to modern day.

some folks have mentioned the trolley. bet ya didnt know that there was trolley service from coral gables to miami beach at one time? the trolley got up to rather fast speeds and made the trip in about 18 minutes. when you go down coral way from 37th ave to I95 notice the trees in the middle of the road. notice they are all the same size? they were all planted at the same time after the trolley tracks were pulled up.

    tips..
you can visit the MAM (miami art museum), the main library, and the historical museum all in one shot as they are all in the same building complex. parking here sucks. best to take metro rail. beware of the bums. they have become rather aggressive in their panhandling as of late. if you look like a poor student they are more likely to leave you alone.

i genuinely believe every miami resident should go at least once to the historical museum.  last time i was there they were doing a map exhibit (not as exciting as i hoped..ha, guess i'm not one for maps), but they have tons of interesting, historical artifacts and information about the area.

on their website they state, "the museum promotes understanding of the past in order to inform the present and create a better quality of life."  this is why we should go to places like this, so we don't continue making the same dumb mistakes.

the historical museum is one of the largest private, regional history museums in the country.  and they've won many awards.  go support a great little regional museum that not only focuses on south florida's history, but also the Caribbean.

right now (nov 07) they're hosting the "water stories" exhibit which i've heard is great and i definitely want to see it before it's gone in two months.

and fyi, they usually have somewhere on their website a "two-for-one" coupon you can print out, so no whining about you don't have the money.

Great Museum.  It is what it is, doesn't try to be something that it isn't.

2 floors of miami filled history dating back to 10,000BC.  A bit boring for kids and for any adult who is a bit restless.

It is a really a nice little museum too bad that the permanent collection is dusty, that takes a lot away from its charm .The people who work there are super friendly and glad to have visitors . I go back every few months to ck out the new exhibits and have never been disappointed .
