This is actually a review of the restaurant at the Old Santa Maria Inn.  The inn was built in 1917. The restaurant was recently remodeled.  I came for lunch with my beautiful mother and my sweet 16 year old son.
We sat in the garden outside on a gorgeous day.
The service was absolutely some of the best we had on our seemingly days long tour of food on the central coast. Our waiter was very attentive and informative.
The food was only so-so.
Mom got the enchilada soup, my son got the... cheeseburger (you knew it was coming) and I got a roast beef sandwich on some delicious bread. The sandwich itself was only marginal, but the bread was wonderful.  Mom's soup tasted to me like it came out of a can and my son's burger was burnt.
I would go back for the patio seating and the historical nature of the Inn.  Very old school Golf Club atmosphere.

An old historic hotel with character! We booked a suite with a fireplace. The suite we stayed in at first was called the Los Olivos Suite, but the latch on the window was broken and we couldn't close it. They then moved us across the hall to the Los Robles Suite. It had a nicer layout and newer carpet.

The bed was very comfortable. The suite came equipped with a kitchen. Literally, it's like your traditional one bedroom apartment. It sits in the heart of Santa Maria with easy access to the wineries.

This is not your average hotel suite. No bathrobes provided so bring your own! We can hear the street noise despite our location on the 6th floor.
But what do you expect? It's an old historic hotel. Something gotta creek.

Stay in the new tower! Service is satisfactory.

We arrived early in order to check in and get a decent room in the new tower. The front desk informed us that our room wasn't ready and to check back in 30 mins. I gave her my credit card info and id to secure our reservation. Off to wine tasting we went.

We came back to the hotel at 5pm to get the keys and to freshen up before our dinner. They checked us in, gave us the key, and off we went to what i thought was a nice room in the execute tower.

As we walked in, we both noticed that they gave us a handicapped room with two queen sized beds. This is not what i requested and it is not what we had asked for when we checked in early at noon. Called downstairs and was told that's all they had - fine. The lay out of the room is your basic no frills room that you can find at any 2 star hotel.

The beds were horribly uncomfortable and so soggy that we both slept at an angle. In the morning, we both made comments to each other on how we barely slept and complained of back stiffness. One thing that made me sick was the red streaking stains on the bathroom mirror.

This hotel is off my list for life. I will never stay here again and for what they charge for those rooms is a ripoff ($180) per night. I got our room $140 thru a diff website, but i would prefer to stay at a different place for that price. They try to get you with the historic charm, but they fail in comfort and service.

I stayed here awhile back and forgot to write my review. The hotel has two personalities: one-the historic side also haunted and two the modern side with typical hotel amenities. I stayed here with my son and his friend for a baseball tournament in town - they stayed on the modern side and I was given a  room in the historic section. Overall the hotel has a unique history and charm of a classic hotel -must have been quite the place in the early 1900's not my type of place now. The room I was given had your basic furniture and lumpy bed. My room had a musty odor as did the hallways. The service at the front desk gets only 2 stars as the staff I interacted with seemed not to care much if your needs were met or not - very indifferent. I strolled down to the bar downstairs and I ordered a great glass of cab (can't) remember the name. While enjoying my glass of wine I asked the bartender what the workers were up to as they were installing and setting up high tech film equipment, motion sensors, lights, camera, heat detectors I think - he said the bar gets alot of paranormal activity and they were trying to capture a few images, sounds etc. After I finished my glass of wine I then went back to my room in the historic/haunted section of the hotel and kept an eye open for any unexpected visitors.

We just spent the weekend here because my husband's high school reunion was located in the hotel.  For group rate they charged an inordinate amount for an extremely ordinary room that was much like a Comfort Inn--nothing fancy or high-priced in terms of towels, toilet paper, amenities that you can find in any lower-priced chain.  On the Friday night of the reunion (which had been reserved for months ahead of time) we all were shushed and had to tippy-toe to our patio because someone was taking a deposition on a law case.  The meal they served was good and better-than-average.  The bartender in the Wine Cellar was terrific.  We wouldn't stay there again because the rates are way-too-high.

OLD ENGLISH TAP ROOM! Went for a visit to Santa Maria and have never taken the hubby to the SM Inn (just the boyfriend...just kidding). So after an exhausting day of hitting every thrift store in SM (major scores!) we decided to cool ourselves with a refreshing beverage. A pint of beer always hits the spot! They have a nice selection on tap including local breweries!...added star! They have great happy hour prices and a little buffet set out. A great selection of veggies with tasty ranch dressing. The hot FREE food was hot dogs...not high on our list of yummy things, we passed on the hot dogs. A very interesting mix of people. The groping couple, a couple of business people, a group of ladies (40's) drinking martinis and having a great time....but our favorite table was the group of older men (70's-80's) talking about their travels to Istanbul, Budapest, Cairo and other really cool areas and all trips taken recently. They were drinking "real cocktails" Rob, Roy's, Gin Martini's, Manhattans and other you would find in old school bartenders books. They shared a few jokes and a few laughs with us. Definitely a generation of classy, well educated, worldly and well traveled men. My husband and I enjoyed the entertainment! A great place to get a cool bev and meet some super interesting (and I mean this in a great way!) characters! WE WILL BE BACK

My boyfriend and I ended up staying here because there was nothing available around Solvang. We had a pretty pleasant experience here. The name suits the place very well. You can tell the moment you walk in. The lobby had a very historical elegant look to it. The room we stayed in was part of the original hotel (before the additional rooms were added) and had a star with Shirley Temple's name on the door. Our room was nice and clean, with antique furniture.

It's close to nearby malls, shopping centers, grocery stores, etc., and they have their own restaurant, salon, and shops (which we didn't get to check out). It's a pretty good place to stay at if you're in the area.

the rooms are more than adequate.  My non-smoking room I was almost positive the previous occupant had been curing a ham.  Intense smell of smoke.  The dinners are adequate and the service is attentive but the breakfasts is not complementry and outrageously expensive considering the overcooked eggs and bacon, unripened fruit and day old costco pastries.

A few of my friends and I stayed here when we went to visit their family and enjoyed our short stay at this historic Inn. The hallways are a little creepy a la The Shining, but the rooms were nice and cozy. It was also cool to see the stars attached to the doors of the rooms indicating that a movie star had stayed in that room. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, breakfast wasn't complimentary so that was a bummer (even though our entire stay there was taken care of by my friend's father), but the breakfast we had while we were there was really good. Unfortunately for us we missed the all you can eat brunch buffet *sigh*. Overall a pleasant experience had by all of us, and definitely wouldn't mind staying here again.

Having lived on the Central Coast, we used to come and drink wine in the wine cellar at the HSMI. They finally figured out how to run the wine cellar, but the rooms are a different story. We decided to stay here one night, but were extremely disappointed. The rooms we got were right over the kitchen- 5 AM we are woken by the clanging of pots and yelling of staff, which was incessant. To add to the noise level, the meeting room was hosting some guy who thought he needed to yell into the microphone, and talked about nothing at the top of his lungs starting at 8 AM. This was all on a Saturday morning, a time when people who stay at hotels want to sleep in.
Granted, the lobby is very well-kept, and the bar/restaurants areas are clean. Yet, the rooms were from the 1980s, and the amount they were charging was not equal to what you got. Save some money and hassle, and stay at the Rose Garden Inn down the road- that's what the HSMI rooms are equal to.
