7 reviews for Historic Cary House Hotel
Solid 3.5 Stars.
GOOD:
- Location on Main Street close to restaurants, shops, and highway
- If you book online during the off-season, there are great deals available, making this place on par, or as cheap/expensive as any other place in town
- Historic and haunted (we didn't see any ghosts) with lots of character.
- cool tiny old-school elevator and creepy old paintings on the walls
BAD:
- Small, somewhat awkwardly laid out rooms that are straight out of the past. Bed and other furnishings were pretty much borrowed from Grandma's attic. Tiny tv sat in corner on top of a folding table - like the kind you use to eat tv dinners.
- If you get a room towards the front of the hotel, be prepared to be kept awake by the people from the bar across the street
- The heating seemed broken. Our room was freezing, but just barely turning on the heat made the temperature rise about 30 degrees to sauna-levels. We had to make the decision of seeing our breath in the hotel or roasting.
VERDICT:
Whenever I travel, I like to stay at places with character and history, like Carey House, and for that reason, I'm pushing it towards 4 stars. It's definitely not like staying at the Ritz, or even at the the Best Western in Pollack Pines, but you can't put a price on old school places like these.
We love staying in places like the Cary House vs. any standard motel.
Hotel is located in the center of town, walking distance to the shops, cafes, etc. Hotel has free parking access in an adjacent public lot.
Price was no more expensive than the motels around town, with a discount for booking on-line in advance. Modern bathroom, kitchenette and large bedroom. Included was a substantial continental breakfast in a charming courtyard. A real value for the price.
The lobby has retained its 19th century look, and the small staff was helpful and friendly.
If you're exploring in the gold rush country, you can't beat this spot.
Supposedly this hotel is haunted, but I didn't have any ghostly encounters. I stayed here for a wedding and I liked this hotel because it was different and all the rooms were unique and not your standard looking generic hotel rooms! It was a cute little place and it was nice to stay in something a little different. It's located in the heart of downtown Placerville, so convenient if that's what you're planning to visit while staying here.
It looks like I'm the first person who has actually stayed here to review this place. You gotta love Yelp.
Actually, you gotta love Placerville: not only did it used to be called Hangtown, but even today the tattoo parlors (3) outnumber the Starbucks (2).
The Historic Carey House is of course, an old hotel that has been around for over a hundred years. Back in the day it was high class 'cause it had a bathroom on every floor! These days it has a bathroom in every room, the result of a makeover in the 70's. Unfortunately, the makeover removed all personality from the rooms--you might as well be in a cookie cutter hotel. Buuut, there is a great historical appearing lobby, the staff is friendly, and the rates are good. Great location, too right on Main Street.
If you are inclined to explore California's gold rush past, Placerville is a good place to start and the Carey House is a good place to stay.
NOTE:
I haven't stayed here, but I just saw a special on the Travel Channel that highlighted this hotel for its many Gold Rush ghosts that continue to haunt its guests. Depending on how you like to get your spook on, this could be a good thing or a bad thing. Just thought you might want to know: http://www.legendsofam...
Actually I haven't stayed there either but I'm a fan! We stopped in one afternoon in the fall and the lobby was full of folks in 19th century dress including gun rigs. After chatting for a while we explored the place looking at the pictures and artifacts. This would be a real neat place to spend the night!
I didn't actually stay here but my friends did and it was super cute! It is right on Main Street in downtown Placerville. Everything is totally walkable and parking is not a problem.
