I love a restaurant where the waitresses all wear Cobbie Cuddlers.  I love a place where they serve rippled pickle chips with your grilled cheese sandwich.  I love being called "doll face" and "darlin'" by someone who could have retired a good 10 years ago.  I like worn vinyl booths and plastic covered menus.  I also like eating and looking at displays of chocolate bunnies, Santas, hearts, or whatever holiday icon is nearest in the calendar.  And I love a place when torn between having a shake or an egg cream, the waitress's simple solution is, "Have an ice cream soda, darlin'.  Its the best of both worlds."

Where else other than heaven could you find a place that makes a perfect egg salad sandwich on eat on wheat with perfect chicken noodle soup? Oh an also I would like a chocolate egg cream with that. Everyone seems to know each other here and I thought it was great that this place is still kickin. Prices were very reasonable (half a perfect sandwich with a cup of perfect soup with a mound of perfect potato salad for $4.99. And why would you go anywhere else?

Awesome homemade ice cream. In fact, if this place was an ice cream store rather than a diner, it totally would have 4+ stars. However, to call this diner sub-par would be generous. Upon entering, we were instructed to "sit wherever" the place was empty, so without thinking about it, my boyfriend and I sat at the only table that had napkins and silverware. "Oh, you're just two? Either side, please," was barked at us when the waitress noticed us sitting in one of the larger booths (did I mention the place was empty?).

I ordered a grilled cheese for lunch, but what I received was more like a toasted cheese. Generally, when making a grilled cheese, the outer sides of the bread are buttered so the bread is grilled and tasty... apparently this integral step was skipped because on my plate was 2-3  slices of american cheese (way too much) sandwiched between 2 dry slices of toasted wonder bread. Gross. On the way out I noticed another girl with grilled cheese... GRILLED CHEESE (damn, I wish I could I could italicize!). Maybe it was personal.

Despite my disappointment in the world's easiest sandwich to make, my coffee milkshake was delicious. I would definitely recommend the place if you're in the mood for ice cream, but avoid it if you're looking for a nice diner because this isn't one.

Hinsch's has been a Bay Ridge staple for forever.  Drawn in by its retro 1940s neon sign like a moth to a flame, I stopped by for a coffee and dark chocolate pretzels.  Inside it's your basic beige diner.  The server was very attentive and my coffee appeared almost before I sat down.  The charming elderly woman from whom I purchased the pretzels was a joy, too.  She called me "dear love" and "sweetheart."  If chocolate and a cute old lady don't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will.

Hinsch's is a little piece of history.  Four stars for authentic, if bare-bones neighborhood dining in a sea of commercial conglomerates like Dunkin Donuts and Subway.

It's been in the neighborhood forever and it's a great local gem.  There's nothing like an old fashioned ice cream parlor with homemade ice cream.  The only reason I scored it so low is because the service can sometimes be less than perfect.  Oh they have great homemade chocolate too.

The diner food is so cheap, you really can't expect a lot of fancy.

I gotta give Hinsch's the four stars just for period authenticity, and for the amazing ice cream service staff.  They juggle stuff like Tom Cruise in Cocktail.

Service is 'neighborhood,' totally familiar and not at all fancy.  If you want to interpret that as 'rude,' you certainly may.
