Himalayan sits unobtrusively in a Chicagoland strip mall but offers a yummy buffet that boasts both variety and inventiveness. My family happened to stumble upon it on Father's Day. We were greeted with an extensive buffet offering dishes from all corners of the India cuisine spectrum. The staff was friendly and made the atmosphere accommodating and welcoming even with its thick and steady beeline to the buffet.

Visit this hidden gem and you won't be disappointed!

What a find!  Was shopping for furniture, and smelled Indian food.  It was past lunchtime, and I was starving.  So we stop in.

The buffet is HUGE, and atleast  1/2 of it is all veg.  They had a lot of things i've never seen before.  Something with bamboo shoots that was excellent, and a curry with coconut milk that was real sweet.  This place should really be closer to the city.  Actually it should be in my kitchen.  I still might take the trek out here, maybe if I combine it with a trip to the Japanese supermarket or something.  I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

I have passed this restaurant several times, but it wasn't until last week that I finally went in and tried it. All I can say is that this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to, in every way. The server was attentive, friendly, and informative. The atmosphere was unassuming and laid-back. The food? Well, nothing short of AMAZING. We got the garlic naan, palakk paneer, Kheera Raita, Vegetable Biryani, and a lentil dish whose name escapes me. Everything had an incredible flavor that was not diluted by the spice. (Nothing worse than having something only taste "hot").

Himalayan got it right in every way and I'll be back just as soon as I can!

Spectacular is the word that I use. They have the best food in town and the service is simply fabulous. I have been there number of times for both lunch buffet and dinner. The menu in buffet is extensive and every single food has its own taste and dinner is exclusive with the environment that takes you into a different world (love the soothing music).
I was with a friend who was scared of spices, but the waiter recommendation helped him and yes they can play around spices in some dishes to make comfortable.
It's tough to pick out some food, but you should definitely try the MOMO, chicken makhani, goat curry, lamb tikka masala, garlic naan and biryani to name a few and yes you should try any of the mix special. I guess I'm going for buffet today (yummy).

Devon Street sets the bar pretty high for Indian food in Chicago.  But besides serving that purpose coincidentally, Devon Street also serves a purpose by design - it is the border between Chicago and Niles traveling up Milwaukee Avenue.  Someone forgot to tell Himalayan that it's on the suburban (in a strip mall no less) side because it has thrown down the gauntlet for many Devon establishments.  And won.

And with one special set of menu items (about a dozen) to boot - Nepalese food.

I will state, for the record, that to me, the cuisine of Nepal is very much like Indian food (and in point of fact, the majority of the menu at Himalayan is Indian).  For example, I got the Daal Makhani and I really couldn't tell how it was different from an Indian Daal despite being on the Nepalese portion of the menu.  Then again, I'm a heathen with questionable taste buds, so I'm sure a foodie could pick out the difference in the ingredients.  However, the good thing about not being able to tell it apart from Indian is that it was fantastic!

This restaurant is great for large groups because it caters very well to varying taste buds.  They have four levels of spicy to cater from the tasteful wuss to the budding psychopath (and will let you know how the chef recommends it cooked).  I got the medium and found it a little bland.  However, they offer all sorts of hot sauces and cucumber sauces to play around with your own food until it's just right.

Even the sides are a mountainous land of plenty.  They do not skimp on the naan like so many Indian places (and the garlic naan is such a hit, people at the NW suburban dinner who had been there before recommended it with gusto).  And the crispy fried table starters (sort of like savory taco shells and again with multiple sauces for flavoring to taste) were incredible.

So let's see.  Vegetarian friendly (almost half the menu), right up "the street" from me (there is actually an entrance to its strip mall off Milwaukee), and inexpensive (most meals under $10 and filling).  I think I may have found myself a new Indian restaurant. Sorry Devon Street establishments.  You lose.  To a suburban restaurant.  For shame.

Based on other reviews, I tried this lunch buffet ($8.95).  VERY eh!  While there were at least 5 waiters constantly filling my glass, the VERY SMALL buffet did NOT impress.  A salad, 2 Rice dishes, 2 deserts, with Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Maksara and a Goat dish the only meat entrees, plus 3 or 4 other vegetable dishes do NOT make a huge buffet!  The naan was great, and fresh.  But, no mango ice cream, no gulab jamin desert, nothing really interesting or different from any other Indian buffet.  Frankly I was expecting a lot more from the rave reviews.  However, over half the diners appeared to be Indian (a good sign), and I had no problems with the quality (although the Chicken dish was lukewarm).  But, minimal variety, nothing I haven't had at a dozen other places, nothing exciting.  I live in Rockford (only one Indian place), and researched Indian places carefully before deciding on this one.  I won't be back,  there are too many other places in Chicago/area to try.  Look further if you seek a wide variety buffet!  Rich

Looked forward to a comfort foody meal at Himalayan earlier this week, but I guess I enjoyed the food more on my first visit.  I tried the chicken jalfrazie, and it lacked the flavor and spices I expected.  After working my way to the bottom of the dish, there was nothing left but a pool of grease and oil.  The actual serving bowl itself left huge oil blots on the table.

What disappointed in quality of food was partially made up for by solid service.  The waiter was polite, attentive, and made sure everyone was satisfied.  The only thing is when the food came out, the employee helping our waiter serve the dishes had no idea who ordered what, so he scampered from one end of the table to the other waiting for someone to respond to whatever they ordered.  By the time he got to the 6th dish, he just started putting dishes down.

Good, but not great.

Himalayan is one of my favorite Indian restaurants without having to go to devon.  I like that you can order the stage of hotness 1-5, cuz i really love it spicy!!!!

Only downside i see that its kinda expensive. But i guess its worth it with the location.

I'm trying to think of a complaint.... Still thinking.... But, nope. I got nothing. I don't have a single negative thing to say about Himalayan!

My boyfriend convinced me to give Indian food another try after a bad experience many years ago, and feeling guilty for the innumerable sushi trips I've forced upon him, I consented. This concession has led to a borderline obsession.

The garlic naan is so fresh it melts in your mouth. Sometimes I'm kept awake by my longing for that delicious carb wonder! Chicken tikka masala, peas paneer, dum aloo, vegetable briyani, this list goes on - I have yet to have something that wasn't delicious. Literally.

We recently tried the lunch buffet and my inaugural trip was definitely enjoyable. If you think the food on the buffet is good, then ordering a la carte is a MUST! The flavor and quality of the food only increases when you order off the menu.

I should also note the excellent service. The people are always very friendly and ready with a suggestion when asked. The food is consistently dished out hot and promptly, which is perfect when your stomach is rumbling!

While it is a trek out to the suburbs, it's certainly worth it. Don't be fooled by the DMV next door - this is some of the most excellent Indian food in the Chicagoland area. If you enjoy a clean, friendly dining atmosphere and a healthy helping of tandoori, then this is a must-visit for you. And you can always count on the ample parking - there's always the upside to the strip mall!

I think I picked a winner when I chose this to be the place for our latest NW Suburban Dinner. I never had Indian or Nepalese food, so I was pleasantly surprised. We came here on a quiet Tuesday night and were seated promptly at our designated table right by the windows. Don't let the rather plain white exterior fool you. This place is big inside and can hold a lot of people.

On the table awaiting us, there was a crisp bread that resembled taco shells folded shut. It was flaky and tasted of cumin. On the table, staggered at intervals, were 3 cups with dipping sauces for the crisp bread: orange with chunky stuff in it, a reddish sauce and my favorite, a bright green dip that tasted strongly of cilantro.

Then came time to order our drinks. I got a mango shake, which was awesome. They also had pineapple, which George R chose. They also have yogurt & fruit smoothies called lassi. A few people got mango lassi. I can assure you this lassi has no collies in it, in case you're unfamiliar with Nepalese food.

For dinner, I decided on chicken kokhoura, a Nepalese village-style chicken, served in a bowl immersed in a flavorful sauce with some vegetables. Excellent and not spicy at all. I also got the garlic Naan bread, which can best be described as a relative of the pita, sprinkled with some cheese, cilantro and garlic. All of it was served on these bronze-colored dishes with laurel leaf handles (see photo).

George R went with Chicken Jalfrazie, which I warned him: "You gotta be crazy to try Chicken Jalfrazie". But it wasn't so crazy as it was hot. I tried a bite of it and it had this delayed impact after tasting it. Then I felt the sudden rise in the heat level of what I had just eaten. Amazing thing about it is that it filled me up rather quickly.

I also got to try some of Joy C's dish and some spicy lamb kabobs. All of it was excellent.

In the end, I was too full for any dessert, or I would have tried their rice pudding with fruit. Our waiter served our table well, but at the end he disappeared for a while and left a few people without water. But in all, it was a great experience and I would recommend this place for dinner to anyone willing to be adventurous and try new flavors.

Good service, authentic Indian and Nepalese food, in a suburban location.

I got a $25 certificate off http://restaurant.com for here for $3 so I decided to try it out for dinner.   I saw all the positive reviews but was pleasantly surprised still.   The naan was awesome, comes out fresh, hot, crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside.   The mango lassi probably doesn't use fresh mango, but it has intense mango flavor probably from nectar.  The tandoori chicken and lamb curry were also good.  There is a chicken dumpling appetizer with a spicy dipping sauce that had a dumpling skin and steaming prep just like the Chinese xiao long bao.   The chicken filling is different than the Chinese dumpling, but this dumpling and sauce combo was quite tasty and worth trying.

The naan was better than at any other place I have had.   The restaurant is clean and the decor reflects the cuisine.  I will definitely return here the next time I am looking for Indian / Nepalese cuisine.  You can stuff yourself for $20 or under here.

I came here a couple weeks ago with the family. We came on a Saturday evening for dinner. The menu is extensive, and the service was OK. However, the food itself was nothing to write home about. Perhaps I would have been more impressed had I come when the buffet was open.

Buying Indian dishes a la carte is silly, after all. Unless you're in a big group and you're all sharing dishes, the best thing would to just come when they are serving the buffet.

The food was not bad, it just wasn't that great. If you're in that area and craving Indian food, then I suggest you go. My parents (one of whom is Indian) quite enjoy the food each time. So, maybe it's just me.

I thought the foods were really good and yummy.

I went with my fiance and my mom....  my mom never really goes out to eat Indian food because my dad doesn't like it.  Anyways I thought that the service was extremely polite and the food was nice and fresh.

As Vanessa said, if there is no buffet sometimes Indian restaurants can be crazy with everything being ala carte.

But I was introducing my mom to Indian so everything is new to her.  So we went for the 'value meals' which are combo platters.  We got a veggie combo platter and a meat combo platter (the veggie serves 1 and the meat combo serves 2)

The veggie combo has the creamed spinach, a lentl dish, something that was creamy and carroty, some thicker brown stuff (mmmm thick brown stuff), naan, the yougurt sauce, rice, and keer for dessert).

The meat combo has tandoori chicken, tandoori lamb skewer, chicken Tikka (not tikka masala), lamb curry, the peas and cheese cubes thing, naan, rice, keer for dessert.

We also got some somosas.  Nicely fried with taters and peas inside.

It was a great mixture of food.  It was way too much for the 3 of us (I'm a big eater).... I'd say this would be a perfect meal for 4 people and everyone would get their fill.

The only down side in my opinion was that there was only 1 free refill of their masala chai.  It was so good.

This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants.

1. The lunch buffet is under $10 (amazing already!)
2. Their little fried appetizers are fresh and a great start to any meal
3. Butter Chicken and Mutter Paneer ... YUM!
4. Fresh nan ... another YUM!
4. Dessert's not bad either ... gulab jaman and sometimes they've got this rice pudding deal that tastes like coconut/cinnamon/pistachio.

Bottom line ... they've got great, fresh Indian food here at an unbeatable price (especially the lunch buffet). I would recommend this place for first time Indian-cuisiners ... the food is generally mild (but flavorful) and if you don't like it, you won't feel like you've wasted a whole of of money.

Loved it!!!!!
I ordered the chicken with the spicy curry. Our waiter asks if I'm sure that I want something that hot!!. My answer: Hell Yes!!! One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to eateries is that the things they claim as spicy turn out to be anything but. But the spicy Curry fit the bill. It was not only spicy, it was delicious. I will admit that the Curry had me working up a bit of a sweat halfway through the meal.
The decor is pretty cheesy and it is located in a strip mall, but I will ignore that due to the great food and wonderful service. I would also recommend that you try the Indian Beer Selection that they offer. Both beers that I tasted were full bodied and wonderful.
If you are into trying new and exotic food, the Himalayan Restaurant should be on your to do list. You won't be disappointed.

So, the Himalayan is located in a congested strip mall in Niles. The only way you are getting worse ambiance is to sit in the food court at Midway. I think this is part of the reason why I have known about this restaurant for like 5 years, but always forgot to try it out. But, man, what a shame that was! 5 years wasted! This place is incredible!

We started off with an assorted appetizer plate, which consisted of vegetable fritters, samosa, shish kabab and chicken tikka. This is a nice sample of things, I liked the chicken and the samosa the best.

For an entree I ordered the Kerala Fish Curry, which is a South Indian delicacy of fish slowly simmered in a seasoned coconut sauce. The menu offers 4 spice levels, everything from completely bland to what was described in the menu as "extra spicy: make you sweat". I tell the waiter I want Extra Spicy. He then goes into this long rambling reason why I should not order it like this, as others before me have done so and "regretted" it.

Of course, this only makes me scoff at the pansy ass palates of the "others" and makes my desire to see just how hot this really can get only stronger. I insist on keeping the order the way it is and the guy goes away, I am sure thinking "ugh, silly white girls who don't know about such things!"

So, the curry comes and while it is not the hottest thing I have ever eaten, it is pretty freakin fabulous. Really spicy with a slow burn but not so much that the flavour of the curry is masked. The waiter is pretty much astounded at the fact that I not only ate it, but really enjoyed it. ha!

We also tried the garlic naan which was super garlicky and absolutely yum.

I cant wait to go back. So much hot heat so close to my house, I am not even caring about the location anymore that's how rockin it is. Himalayan has a new regular customer!

i LIKE the strip mall/DMV setting. Surreal. THAT was a delicious refreshing peaceful step WAY UP from THE Indian Garden last week, see that review or just don't go there.

NEW white paper tablecover put down on top for each new table over white linen, a refreshing change from the sticky table wiped off with the sticky rag at The Indian Garden. Some nice little touches like a small sugar spoon waiting in your sugar packet container and large clean glass water tumblers for your perfectly cool water WITHOUT the often musty ice. NOT your usual overdone interior, much more white space than usual with just a few beautiful himalayan pictures and very clean bright lighting. COULDN'T have been cleaner or brighter, almost minimalist. Free easy parking.

We had the very reasonable $9 lunch buffet, no hocus pocus fine print jargon like The Indian Garden. VERY attentive, quiet calm and smiley enuf efficient waiterpersons-guys. Ours was really cute and actually from Nepal! I wanted to take him home and he wasn't my type at all.

Very fresh cold salads and sauce assortments. Cold and hot appetizers that changed twice while we were there. Yummy dahl soup and the usual Indian lunch buffet, very mildly seasoned ( I like spicey) and no fish serving while we were there that I missed.  VERY delicious carrot-almond-honey desert and two special yogurt fruit deserts changed while we were there. DELICIOUS himalayan hot black tea (multiple free refills brought graciously cup by cup) with much more up front cardamom -a refreshing change from the usual too much cinnamon chai. Also the Mango Lassi Sweet was SO thick we thought it might be the shake and actually asked to make sure.

We WILL be back to try some spicier individual ENTREES now having experienced  the Lunch Buffet that The Indian Garden likes to define as  a " Series of  Entrees!" so that you cannot use the Entertainment Booklet card (theirs is $13!!). Save yourself. Go Himalayan! There's nowhere to park at The Indian Garden anyway and it is up two steep flights of stairs.

pros- $9 bargain moderately seasoned lunch buffet, EASY free parking, tastefully understated peaceful suburban mall setting, unusually competent efficient servers, squeaky clean and bright, himalayan black tea.

cons- no fish entrees while we were there or ice cream deserts (I'm reaching here we Really enjoyed the unrushed HOURS we spent there).

Wonderful refreshing peaceful lunch at the Himalayan. We are FANS.

I moved here about two months ago and turned to Yelp to steer me towards new places for me to try. I did a keyword search of  "Indian" and this popped up. They have a website, so I was able to check out what they are all about before I even set foot in the door. They went into my bookmarks of Places to Try and sat there for over a month. So after trying quite unsuccessfully to get a new ID at the motor vehicles place next door, I decided to drown my sorrows in curry.

The decor is a toned down version of your typical Indian restaurant. I liked that it wasn't too cheesy. The walls are mostly monotone with wooden accents. No screaming tapestries or Bollywood videos playing (which I usually enjoy, but wasn't in the mood for).

Himalaya's staff greeted me as soon as I walked in and had me seated very quickly. My table was already set and they asked me what I wanted to drink. I opted for water, which was refilled several times and didn't leave me parched for a second. If there is anything I hate, it is going water-less.

I came in time for the buffet and was happy to see equal portions of vegetarian to meat ratio. I tend to be a meatatarian and preferred the meat dishes to the others, but mostly because I felt they had better seasoning. Tandoori chicken was a little too blackened for my taste, but the inside was quite moist. Their makhani is probably my second favorite of all places and I was thrilled that there were good chunks of goat without the bone. The complimentary naan also caught my attention.

All in all this was a good experience for just a little over $10.

I have to agree with the previous reviewers.  Himalayan Restaurant is a great find.  It's in a strip mall, which is a little  weird, but the decor is fine and there is ample parking.  The first thing I liked about the place was their sense of humor in the menu. There was an invitation to loosen your belt and enjoy yourself.

I had the Lamb Rogan Josh and while it was a little greasy, it was very good. We ordered the garlic naan and it is the best I've had by far and I've been enjoying Indian food for 20 years.  They have a good beer selection and besides the Indian restaurant staple beer Kingfisher, they had another called Maharaja, which is from Bangalore and pretty good.

We usually frequent Devon Avenue for Indian food and while there is a much better neighborhood atmosphere up there, Himalayan's food is much better.  No hassle of street parking either.

I love everything about this place.  The food is amazing, the staff is friendly.

But I noticed that most reviewers ordered some type of meat.  However, I would suggest ordering vegetarian dishes.  My favorite is Mutter Paneer.  And don't let "cottage cheese" scare you.  It's not like Dean's Cottage Cheese that you buy at Dominick's.  It looks like tofu, but tastes absolutely amazing.  And for those who say they must it meat to be satisfied, believe me you will be satisfied with this vegetarian dish.  Palak Paneer is also quite tasty.

For dessert Carrot Pudding is a must.  And also try their Himalayan tea.  It's a herbal heaven.

This was where we had another Yelp NW Suburban Dinner. You may not know it, but sporadically when in Tokyo, Japan, I wound up at East Indian restaurants. Typically for lunch. They are restaurants where some English is understood; and significantly, they are relatively inexpensive.
I had the lamb kebab here, and I can't remember if I had the garlic naan, or the regular naan. I was slightly surprised that naan is an optional side dish here. It was very good. I ate it all, and I might have finished off somebody else's naan also. (It is a semi-mandatory option, people. You need to have it, but you must pay extra for it. The surprise here was that its price wasn't bundled into the entree's cost.)
The lamb was very good. Savory, tender, not too gamey or chewy. The vegetables accompanying it tasted very fresh. For beverage, I opted for the 650 mL bottle of Flying Horse Royal Lager Beer. It was a solid complement for the lamb kebab with its slightly malty flavor.
You should make the effort to get here. I give the bus details beneath, but there's lots of free parking here should you want to motor.
And I wound up with the rat at the end of the meal. Despite being a cat, rats do not faze me out, or generate homicidal visions, at all.

Transit options: Getting here is easier than going back (to Chicago). During daylight hours, including PM rush, the Pace route #270 Milwaukee does not terminate all its runs at Golf Mill Mall across the avenue. Many runs go on to Glenbrook Hospital. The route begins at the Blue Line "L" Jefferson Park station. The NB bus turns into the Mall's south parking lot near J. C. Penney's. If it going beyond Golf Mill, stay on the bus. It ejects back north onto Milwaukee Ave. _The next stop is the one you want._ It is for the Four Flaggs shopping center. It will place on the sidewalk from which you don't have to cross any streets - just walk north and east into the strip mall. Himalayan shall be on the right.
If you're there later in the evening though, you are facing a three-block walk south and west across Milwaukee Ave. to the lane where the #270 lays over. The last buses back to Jefferson Park are at 9:10, 9:40, & 10:20 pm weeknights, 8:38, 9:40, & 10:45 pm Saturday, and 8:30, 9:30, & 10:30 pm Sunday.
If you're on the north side of Chicago (or Skokie | Evanston), the #208 Golf Rd. bus runs back to the Purple Line "L"'s Davis station. It goes east at 8:05, 9:05, & 10:04 pm weeknights, 8:01, 8:44, & 9:44 pm Saturday, and 7:45 & 8:35 pm Sunday.

EDIT: This place must have gotten new owners, because the quality of their food is no longer up to par. :(

OLD REVIEW: My favorite Indian/Nepali restaurant by far. I don't usually come for dinner, but I'm a huge fan of their lunch buffet (though the price has upped somewhat recently to $8.95 :[ ) The buffet food is consistent, fresh, and tantalizing to my ticklish taste buds. Satisfies my craving for Indian every time. Almost too satisfying... considering the fact that I can barely keep my pants buttoned after leaving this place. Personal favorites include the buffet lentil dish, tandoori chicken, and their mango ice cream. I recently started eating chicken after years of being vegetarian and after this Tandoori Chicken, I don't know if I can go back! Another highlight of the buffet is a complimentary basket of freshly baked naan. Best naan of any I've had, never to disappoint- such a huge plus for me! God, I just ate there for lunch yesterday and I already want more.

Also, for a cool, delicious refreshment this summer try a Mango Lassi! Yum!

I had their Tandoori Chicken, Aloo Paratha, Poori, Chicken Baryani, and their steamed rice. Everything was delicious and my sister and I couldn't finish all the food we had. It's a little pricey, but well worth it. I highly suggest going dim sum and sharing with friends and family.

The service was great, our table was visited at least 10 times for drink refills and check ups on how we were doing.

I didn't get the chance to try any of their Nepali food, but I will definitely go back for it, as well as their lunch buffet.

I agree with the 4 star reviews.  This is a good Indian-Nepalese restaurant.  It is as popular an Indian place as we have seen, though Mount Everest in Evanston can be popular also.  Every table was occupied on a Saturday night, and it was a diverse crowd which speaks to the food quality.  We had the non-vegetarian combo for two (lamb, two types of  chicken, paneer - a nice curry cottage cheese), and it was good and filling.  It also came with a cold minty tapioca rice pudding which was nice as part of the combo and made for dessert.  We added a fish tikka (which was a bit dry), but that's the nature of this tandoori dish.   Suggest sticking with with the lamb, chicken and veggie staples.

YESS! I finally found an Indian place that DELIVERS TO GLENVEW! I love indian food and tend to crave it twice a month. This place is great. The food is delicious and fresh when we get it delivered. It comes within 45 minutes and the delivery men are always very sweet. Also, they have great vegetarian options! =] Yummm

When hubby and I were living in Chicago, this was the only highlight of our time spent there.

I think we were one of their very first customers and thanks to my husband's leet google skills, located an Indian (Himalyan specifically) restaurant. We'd make the trek from our Ardmore Street condo to this place at least 3 times a week.

I'm a huge huge HUGE fan of their chicken tikka masala - by far the best I've ever had in the US - as well as their chicken korma, palak paneer, farsi bhaji (sp? I can't find it anywhere outside of this place) and onion kulcha.

The farsi bhaji is this wonderful dish of green beans cooked in coconut milk and flavored with indian spices. I'm drooling as I write this. Their chicken tikka masala is out of this world, second only to a restaurant hubby took  me to in London (if yelp were international, I'd be ranting and raving about that place). Butter chicken? *faints* Absolutely smooth, creamy and mild enough to tempt the staunchest Indian food hater over to the dark side.

Hubby was (and still is) a huge fan of their lamb biryani. We've eaten at their buffet a few times and it's been wonderful. Their food is consistently good with pride put into each dish.

My mother, the biggest hater of Indian food even suggested going there twice during her visit.

I've never had bad service there, but I can see how some people would be put off by the wait staff.

Just had the daily buffet, which was fairly decent. I wanted to see how their Nepalese cuisine could be better or worse than the supposedly "authentic" Nepalese food at Mt. Everest in Evanston. I didn't see much difference...so it's a draw.

The veggies were freshly cut, and the tandoori chicken was tastier than the other items. The goat and lamb curries were nicely mild. The flavored rice was a bit smushy, though...and the lentil soup was left untouched after one sip.

Spacious and clean interior, but the service gets two stars. They didn't seem pleased when I asked for additional napkin. I use my hands when eating tandoori chicken...can't help it!

*Lunch buffet: 11:30am to 2:30pm on weekdays; 12pm to 3pm on weekends

One of my favorite lunch buffets.  The food is great (not too greasy or over seasoned), cheap buffet, good service and NONSTOP fresh nan served straight to your table.

Nice Indian and Nepalese restaurant which offers a daily lunch buffet for $7.95.  Buffet items on our visit included:
1) small salad bar (skipped)
2) two appetizers - onion pakoras and a salty pancake made of rice flour
3) soup
4) khasi ko masu (spiced bone-in goat meat stew)
5) chana masala (chickpeas)
6) farsi bhaji (green beans in coconut milk)
7) mutter paneer (peas and paneer)
8) chicken tikka masala
9) tandoori chicken
10) two desserts -  gulab jamun (fried "doughnuts" in syrup & kheer (rice pudding)
11) basket of fresh naan

Single entree prices are very reasonable with the most expensive item clocking in at $12.95 (not including the Thali for two at $25.95).  A nice clean atmosphere and familly-owned/run business.  Very close to Super H-Mart if you're grocery shopping in the neighborhood.  Not very many places in town with Nepalese specialties, so give it a try when you're tired of the offerings on Devon.

One plus is that everytime I've visited, they've had 1-2 different items on the buffet; This is remarkable as most Indian buffets serve the same thing day-in-day-out, but every visit I make, they have different dishes; In fact mid-meal they will change dishes when one has run out which adds even more to the number of dishes you'll get to sample.

Wow! I am impressed by this place...Although the price went up by a buck, it's still a steal.  The quality of the food is A++++. It was fresh, hot, and delicious.  Good amount of variety.  Their chicken masala, naan, and fruit custard are AWESOME!   The service is the best I've had for a buffet.

I've been to Gaylords and India House in Chicago, and this place has 'em beat.   I'll definitely be back...just wish they were closer to Chicago. :(

My husband and I loved our server and the comfy feel of the restaurant. We did feel that the prices were  high for the amount of food. Loved the momo dumplings, garlic naan and butter chicken. Felt that rice should of came with the entrees. We did order the goat and rice dish. They were unable to meet my request for a more mild taste and we found it too spicy for our taste buds. Also, the goat was mostly grissle and hard to chew. Since it was our first time eating goat we did not know what to expect. Overall, I would return(with a friend)to try the value/combo meals that include more options. My husband says that he would not return.

Lunchtime buffet is consistently good.  When my work colleagues and I are in the mood for Indian this is where we go.  Service can be slow sometimes.

Tandoori chicken is moist and tasty.

The other reviewers have done a great job describing the place so I'll keep this short.  If you like Indian restaurants, then give this place a try.  It's better than what you've become used to.

I was definitely expecting more out of the food based on the other reviews here, but I was let down. The veg momos were a strange texture, the malai kofta was in a bland sauce that was too thick, and the chicken curry (Nepali style) was also just bland. Perhaps because we ordered Medium spice, but it was really bland. the naan was pretty good, the kheer was tasty but not what i expected, and not what the menu described either.

However, despite being under enthused about these things, the mango lassi was the best I've had in the states, and the service was excellent. They addressed me by my first name, and were very friendly and made funny jokes with us. It was very busy because it was valentines day, (they said one of the busiest nights of the year for them) and took about half an hour to seat us, but they gave us dessert for free for making us wait, and gave me (and all the other women that night) a beautiful red rose - so sweet! The service was surely some of the best service I've ever had, especially considering the rose.

I saw somebody order some sort of tandori chicken and it looked and smelled excellent... maybe give that a try?

Went there a few weeks ago for dinner.  This is my first time in a restaurant that serves Nepalese.  We used a http://restaurant.com gift certificate and ordered a variety of dishes across the board.  Usually in Indian restaurants, mild meant it was still darn spicy for me.  Mild here meant mild, haha, go figure.  But, everything was good.  We ordered the vegetable momo, chicken chowela, chicken tikka masala, shrimp curry, i think a goat dish, naan, mango lassi, and i think a pineapple lassi.  For being mild, the chicken chowela was very good and the goat dish.  Next time, will try medium.

Probably my favorite Indian restaurant in the Chicagoland area, easily(and beats out Mount Everest in Evanston by a small thread). Never mind that it isn't exactly close to where I live, but I still make the trip out here, anyway.

I won't try to use the names of the Indian dishes I ate here(other than the naan and mutter paneer, which for some reason are the only Indian food names I can easily recall), but I've always loved the tandoori chicken here. The mutter paneer, and the chickpeas they serve here are great, too. I especially LOVE the desserts they serve here, even if they are extremely sweet(as the normal rule is for most Indian desserts I've previously tried).

I think it helps that my brother's wife's family is very close w/the owners of this restaurant, too(as almost everyone in her family are vegetarians). :)

We went for the lunch buffet.  The selection was small, but almost everything was above average.  The tandoori chicken was especially good.

The service was horrendous; we received our naan bread nearly after finishing our entrees.  It also took much too long to receive our check and for them to process our credit card, especially considering that the restaurant was only about 20% full.

For a nearby and convenient Indian restaurant, this place will do, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Devon joints.

I had some good take out from here yesterday. I will be back to enjoy the buffet too! The staff was friendly to me and they processed my order quick while I waited. The "spicy" was enough to break a nice sweat but I could still enjoy my food and all the rich flavors they got right. The naan was awesome too! I know it was just "bread" but this stuff was the best I ever had!
