Review from Chel R.
Drove in the weekend of Halloween just to get away.
I chose to stay here because of the location and as I have mentioned on my
previous reviews, I love SD. Moreover, I love everything La Jolla.
My balcony offered a view of the courtyard, partial view of the golf course, & a vision of the ocean on the horizon.
The Yey:
Comfy bedding.
Flat screen TV.
Balcony.
Awesome Bell Desk Services.
Efficient & Courteous Valet staff (I call before leavg the room & the car is out front waiting each & everytime).
The bartenders were friendly.
Guest services on the phone were informative, helpful, & pleasant.
Love their pool area & jacuzzi over looking the golf course.
Diggin their cabanas.
Outside lounge area with the firepit was very relaxing
The Eh:
The front desk staff who checked us in couldve been more friendly. He at least should smile more or upgrade our room....SOMETHING.
No fridge.
Nonetheless, a pleasant stay.
I would definitely return:) -

3 1/2 stars. I like this Hilton property. The Torrey Pines golf course separates the hotel from the ocean and plenty of rooms have a view of the ocean. The design of the rooms is not brand new, but it isn't run down and it's very cozy. The bed is great and comfy with down pillows. The shower is great. The pool area is large and country clubbish. In fact, whole hotel has a country club feeling...it's on a golf course, locals have parties here and dine/drink at the bar, there are basketball courts and tennis courts. The staff are very helpful.
The only issue I have, is being charged for parking. It is nothing more than a hidden fee. $20/day for self-parking. Don't nickel and dime your customers!
They also offer valet. -

We really enjoyed our stay here - we had originally booked at the Embassy Suites but when we saw it we wanted a view! We were able to switch here without paying a cancellation fee and we got a great view of the golf course and ocean. This was why we came to San Diego.
The room was very comfortable and clean but not spaciously big, which is why we had opted for a suite hotel at first. The pool area was great to look at and wonderful to use. The concierge was just great - he arranged our tour of San Diego, our whale watch and made restaurant reservations. On the last day we used a different concierge who was also magnificent. That is a total plus of this hotel.
It was pricey to park but the valets were super quick and efficient. I was disappointed that the internet was so expensive - what is with that? I only took it for one day. My only other issue was how dirty the pool area was on Sunday morning - no towels and just mess everywhere when I went down at 9:00 am. I understand that your pool is open until 11 pm and there was a party there but get it picked up by 7:00 am the next morning!
Overall, we had a very nice weekend and would stay there again!Listed in: San Diego experience

Spent the day before Thanksgiving at the Hilton Torrey Pines for my boyfriend's birthday and we enjoyed ourselves!!! We got a room overlooking the ocean view. The front desk was extremely helpful. I requested for a fridge in the room and a wine bottle opener and they were able to accommodate me in no time. The pool was heated and the gym was clean. We closed out our stay with a FUN game of tennis. The ball was in our court making the stay a memorable one and the customer service excellent. The only suggestion I would make was that the snacks were horrendously-priced and a fast food joint or convenient store is aways. Altogether, I will suggest this hotel to my friends and fam.

The Hilton is nice and big but pretty basic.. for the price a little too basic!
Price for parking is outrageous for the fact that it's int the middle of nowhere..
It's great if you are are into golf but if you are like me it's not so great since I am more interested in the beach. It is quite a hike to the beach and you can't cut through the golf course. They didn't have a driver to take you to and from the beach or other attraction which is why they loose another star.
Great view of the golf course and if you squint you can see the beach in the distance. -

Stayed at this hotel over New Year's eve and won't be back. It is basically a nice Motel 8, in an unbelievably great location. This should be a gem in the Hilton chain, yet there is little to no effort to make this an upscale hotel. We arrived at 4 PM, the staff was nice, but our room key cards did not work and we had to go back to get new ones. We later found out the key cards did not work in the parking lot either, which is always fun. The housekeeping staff had the hall ways, and stairways I found out, covered with dirty towels and linens. I have never seen this before. We saw the same dirty dishes in the hallways the entire time we were there. The room had stains on the floor and peeling wall paper. The only two good things you will find with this place is the location and the price. I guess this proves you get what you pay for.

Good Location for visi,t overlooking the ocean. Like the rooms and service. Better that most Hiltons. Food ok (like most hotel food not great.) I would stay here again and it's pet friendly. All in all really nice hotel with great grounds.

Definitely an upgrade from where I normally stay on business trips. This time my wife came along and we extended the trip for pleasure. This hotel was a pleasure with great rooms, outstanding view and nice restaurant. It is a bit isolated but the view made it all worthwhile. I would have given this hotel 5 stars but it's ridiculous to pay such a high price for internet when you get it for free at nearly every other business hotel I stay at. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable stay.

What a difference a few years makes...
On my recent visit to the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines I found myself wondering what was up. Based on this rather prime location in La Jolla, one would assume this was signature property for Hilton - sort of like the Hilton Hawaiian Village. However, the condition of the property certainly doesn't reflect that in any way shape or form.
We last stayed at the Hilton in 2004 and were very impressed with the facility. So much so in fact that when we decided to visit San Diego a couple of weeks ago, the Hilton was our first choice for hotel.
Since time was short, we didn't have time to play around with Priceline, but the $105.00/night rate on the Hilton webpage was reasonable - especially based on our past experience at this hotel.
Sadly these past almost seven years have not been kind to the Hilton. The carpeting around the elevator lobby was dirty. Not just in need of a cleaning - in need of replacement. The wallpaper in both our room (4039) and our guest (4035) was peeling off in some locations. The sliding doors were rusted. Although there was a cabinet for an honor bar or refrigerator, it was just an empty piece of furniture that didn't match the other furniture in the room. In addition, there was mold growing around the edge of the bathtub. Not exactly what you'd expect at a Hilton - especially one in such a key location.
I will have to say the public spaces seemed to be in much better condition - almost as if they were trying to keep up the appearance of prosperity while the rest of the hotel collapsed around them.
The rest of our room was fine. The bed was comfortable and everything in the room was operational. (I did have a very hard time finding a place to plug in the iron. All of the outlets in the room are either in use or behind furniture.)
We were very impressed with the level of service. The bellman that took care of our bags was friendly and helpful. The valet service for the car was exceptional - our car was always waiting at the front by the time we got to the lobby.
We had buffet breakfast at the Torryana Grille one morning and found it to be more than acceptable, although at $20 per person, a bit expensive for what it was.
I honestly don't know if I'll come back. It was very heartbreaking to see such a nice hotel falling into such disrepute. I can certainly understand why they had such good rate available, but if Hilton doesn't do something soon, pretty soon they're going to be marking the rooms down even further. -
Review from Seth D.
Kailua, HI
This stay was good, nothing spectacular, but it was Hilton and the service was great, just didn't blow me away.
The Room:
I had a double queen room, even though it was just me, and the room was very nice and updated. The bed was very comfy and big and it had a large flatscreen to catch up on Sportscenter. I was a little irked that a) Wi-Fi isn't included in a place this nice and b) it was unbearably slow. The bathroom was just ok. I would hope for a more spacious and impressive shower, and as other people have noted the bathrooms are your own personal sound stage.
The restaurant:
The breakfast was pretty good, and the buffet wasn't too bad either, but again nothing really wowed me. I was hoping for a little more from a Hilton, especially for this location.
The bar:
This was one of the redeeming factors. The bar and the service was great! All the bartenders were very friendly and quick to get your drink out to you. At one point the bartender even tried to send a group of girls my way (excellent wingman except for the fact I am engaged haha).
The location:
This is where I think this hotel makes it's killing, I mean c'mon it's on fricken Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla! The pool overlooks one of the damn holes! The view is gorgeous and the firepits are a great place to have a drink as the evening closes in.
All in all the Hilton La Jolla is just missing the wow factor that you would hope a Hilton would have. That's why it's A-OK and nothing more. -

Great place to stay, no one was there, super quiet. Right on the golf course, with beautiful views. Dog friendly! Booked on priceline for a $100/night.

Review from Albert W.
I agree with Lily J. If you've been to any Hilton, it's basically the same. For this Hilton, it's big but pretty basic. Great view of the golf course and it's really close to UCSD (just wish it was on the south side more closer to downtown La Jolla). Seems to be a lot of vacation people also at this Hilton (which I like compared to the business crowd).

This place started out as a 2 star review, but made it's way to a 4 star. Let me explain.
We had booked 2 double beds in our room, but when we got there, they apparently "ran out" of 2 bedroom rooms. So we had to get a rollaway in a room w/a king size bed. It was pretty cramped, but ok, fine... but then it took about 1 hour to get our rollaway. By this time, it was almost 1AM since we flew in late and had a late check in. Finally we went down and complained about 1) the room messup and 2) just that it took forever to get the rollaway and that we had to stay up late waiting for it. After some talk, they finally compensated us with some free breakfast buffet tickets. Ok, I guess that's not bad since buffett is $20 a person and they gave us enough tickets for our whole stay.
But what really turned things around was when we came back the next day after they had cleaned, we found that they had opened the door to the adjacent suite/living room for us to enjoy! There was even a note from the manager apologizing for the mess up. The adjacent room had an additional couch, TV, and best yet, it's own patio with an amazing view of the golf course!
Oh, and a sunbathing lady below us, but that's besides the point. :)
Also, in terms of parking, if you don't have much luggage or don't mind walking 5 min, you can just park over the hill when you exit the hotel driveway and there's lots of street parking around there. -

As a conference planner (aka Hotel Snob), I would give this hotel 3 stars.. My boyfriend and I decided to take a staycation for our anniversary. While reviewing my accumulated hotel points, i thought, hey lets stay at a hilton. Well, long and short - Hilton has a crazy point system and i unfortunately did not have enough current points for ONE free night (32,000 is peanuts obviously). Anywhoooo..
The hotel is in a great location. Not anywhere close to downtown La Jolla, but just off Torrey Pines. The view is great, overlooking the golf course and far off ocean.
The rooms - Eh, they are ok. We were upgraded, however I didn't notice much "upgrade" to the room.
Staff - they were very helpful, overall friendly. The front desk manager was very sweet and helpful.
The Pool - very small, and lots of KIDDOS!
Overall Experience - Pleasant. Not excellent, not terrible, just plain pleasant... -
Review from Doris K.
Stayed at this hotel on my first night in San Diego and after dealing with delayed baggage after a cross-country move, anything would have been okay. I thought the lobby was beautiful when at first walked in, but the current construction on the outside of the hotel took away some of the initial giddiness. The room was perfectly fine, and the bed was comfortable - so why the 3 stars?
1. Free wi-fi is only available in the lobby, more specifically the lounge area. For the price that you pay, free wi-fi should be available in the rooms.
2. We had the parking package with our room but every time we tried to use our card to leave the garage it wouldn't work, so we had to call the front desk every time. A bit of an annoyance.
3. After checking out from the hotel, someone from the hotel decided to give us a call and follow up with us about our delayed baggage and whether we received it or not - nice gesture but they didn't leave a message. I called the hotel back and gave the girl our room number and name on the reservation letting her know that someone from the hotel had called but that I didn't know the reason why. She was very curt with me and kept insisting that no one from the hotel had called me and that it must be family or friends staying at the hotel - Lady, we just moved to San Diego and don't know a single person here. Plus what cell phone doesn't have a call record? Either way, a hotel representative did call back after my rude encounter with this girl and wanted to know if we received our luggage. Main point - communication lines need to be open and documented so that hotel staff knows what is going on. -

Irvine, CA
I arrived at this hotel on Friday. We arrived at about 3:30 at which time I valeted my car and proceeded to the front desk. I was greeted by a nice lady who explained check in was at 4pm but she would go ahead and get the check in process finished so all we had to do was come back up at 4pm to pick up our room keys. I explained to her I had dinner reservations at 6pm at the marine room for my mothers birthday which was the ONLY reason for me coming to La Jolla. I went up to the front desk at about 4:15 to get the keys at which time they said there were no rooms available and they would call us when it was ready. At about 5:00pm we go back up there again to explain we still have not had a call and our reservations are at 6pm. They tell us to wait more. I come back up IRATE at 5:30 at which time I am told there are still no rooms. I start to complain I then meet with the manager who at that time tells me she would "take a room" from another person and check us in right away. Obviously at this time we missed our dinner reservations. So we go to our room and order room service since we couldn't eat or make it to my moms birthday dinner. Then when the room service comes up they forget to bring us water with our meals. We then order dessert, and for the 2nd time in the same night they forget to bring us water with our meals. The next day rolls around and I order breakfast before we leave. The food that comes up is literally uneatable. The eggs are running and mind you these eggs are scrambled, and the sausage is barely cooked. The toast is not toasted and my horrible stay continues. At about 10am the TV just shuts down mid show which I called to complain about. I call the valet to get my car so I can get out of this hotel as if it was on fire, and they say they will have my car ready. I come down 20min later car is still sitting in the same spot. I ask them can I please get my car he said there was some confusion about what room number it was. THEN to top it all of my girlfriend forgets her sweater there. We call the hotel and ask if they can check on it. They say yes we will give you a call back soon. We go on an hour hike get back and SHOCKER still no call. We call again they say we will check on it, and will call you back soon. We get home to orange county after a 1 hour and 30 minute drive, and SHOCKER still no call.

Ok..
So I made a yelp account just to trash this place. It was probably one of the worst places that I have encountered.
My parents and I went down to La Jolla from San Francisco. After about 10 hours of driving with lots of traffic, we tried to check-in to our room at 4:15. Their check-in time starts at 4:00pm so we were just there on time. We entered the hotel and waited in line for about thirty minutes before a woman working there helped us. Man.. did she have attitude. Anyways, she told us that our room was not ready yet and that she would call us when they cleaned the room. All we wanted was to wash up and relax because we had to wake up at 7:00AM the next day to attend my brother's graduation. We shrugged it off although we were a little disappointed. Not being from the area, we tried to find a place to eat and just wandered around the city for about three hours. We returned to the hotel at about 7:00pm even though they did not call us. There was no line there anymore but it was still that annoying girl from earlier. She acted surprised like she had called us and told us to wait and that it would be done in the next hour. We tell her to talk to the manager and some dude comes out and apologizes like thirty times. He then starts giving me attitude when I tell him I don't expect to pay full amount of the room because we obviously were not there when we wanted to be and I had to raise my voice and kind of cuss him out. He then tries to arrange a room and my parents thought this was the time to withdraw our business from this garbage place. I was fuming after this guy gives me a "Shut the --- up" look and I just wanted to lean over and grab the dude and slam his head on the counter. I am usually not like this either. I am peaceful and polite but there was just something about those two people working at the desk that irked me. I don't even know if he was the manager because he couldn't provide a business card when we asked for one. The other girl was also giving us a snobby attitude. We ended up sleeping in the car and expect to call the regional manager and complain to see if something can be done.
Well, the lesson of the story is don't book at this place unless you want to risk not having a room after a long drive from wherever you are coming from. In all my twenty one years of life, I have never been so enraged at some business for poor customer service.
Oh yeah, their water tastes like doo doo -

First off, this is a hotel that impresses. It is built into a cliff overlooking the golf course, and filled with beautiful art. Live jazz plays in the cafe and entertains the rich folk and sales reps sitting in the lobby.
That said, it suffers from the same problems that plague most high end hotels from a general usability point. Nothing is included in the rather inflated room price, so expect that the actual cost if your stay will be about 20% higher than what's on the bill. Likewise expect a few things to be missing, like a room fridge, free parking or ample power outlets. (You can request a fridge for the room from housekeeping, but I'd also expect a room charge for that. Parking, however, is $20 a day self serve, $25 a day for valet.)
I really don't want to sound cheap, but as a resident of the 21'st Century, I have certain expectations regarding my stay, and I'd like to think that a high quality resort would not get shown up by a hotel down the street. -

Lake Forest, CA
I liked this hotel a lot, we got a pretty reasonable price for our room. The room was clean, the staff was nice and helpful. $20 self parking/day, $25 valet. Beautiful views of the pool, garden, ocean, and Torrey Pines golf course. Our room had one of the best views (on the 3rd floor) but it did not have a balcony, which was a bummer. The pool and jacuzzi were really nice, bar closes at 6pm by the pool. Overall it's a nice atmosphere, a mix between family friendly and dog friendly, but we still had a good time as a young couple there.

They profess to be "pet friendly". This comes with a whole list of conditions that they do not disclose prior to arrival. If you plan on travelling with your pet, DO ask for the terms and conditions up front. Also, on check-in, they have an "oh, by the way, charge". In addition to the room charge, they hit you for $100@day incidental charge. In the event that you use room service, parking, bar, etc. they take it out of this "fund". No biggie, again, if they would DISCLOSE when making your reservations.
The hotel itself is very old and period dated. Popcorn ceilings? Really? Stained carpeting in the room, old decor and just felt like an older property that could use a major makeover. The views were nice and the staff was just okay at best. They also charge you for either self park ($20@day) or valety ($25@day). They self parking garage is away from the property down a long driveway so expect a little walk from your car back to the main entrance. We have stayed at some very fine properties and this was not one of them. I think that they could be resting on their laurels from hosting the US Open back in '98.
By having the Hilton name on this property, we just expected more. My wife actually used to work for a Hilton property many years back and she said that this was not in line with what the Hilton standards should be. I think if we ever go back to the San Diego area, we will definitely be looking for another propety in which to stay. -

Not spectacular, but certainly NICE.
If you're looking for a place to crash in comfort, this is good.... just keep in mind, this is a light room with a bed, NOT a beach resort destination.
The staff is accommodating, but the room service is pretty awful. If you would like food late at night, it's better to order food to go from a restaurant near-by and then send it downstairs to be re-heated.Listed in: Sleep like a baby

Great view... rooms were huge and clean. Comforter was nice and fluffy. We stayed down here during our little trip to SD and it was quite nice! :)
Pros:
View, each room is staggered so that even the crappiest rooms have a view of the tiny blue sliver that is known as the ocean.
Soundproofing was done well.
Staff was very courteous.
Cons:
Outrageous parking prices.
The fact that I felt like a lab rat. "Take this elevator down to the second floor and walk a mile and turn the corner to get to your room." -

Price aside, this place is great. It's a beautiful location. The hotel is beautiful and well maintained. It overlooks Torrey Pines Golf Course and the Pacific. I think every room has a view.
Don't come here expecting sun. La Jolla is usually overcast and a little cooler than the rest of San Diego. -

I did have the fortunate opportunity to stay here and it was a lovely experience, but this Hotel is very pricey and if I was staying in a hotel in La Jolla I would much rather it be in the Village. Plus, I'm not a golfer and I know this hotel is appealing to many because it right on the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
I stayed here because I was with a family member who came here for a conference, thus I didn't have to pay for anything, but I had the money, I would much rather use the funds to pay for a suite at the La Valencia. Although that hotel is smaller it has a lot more charm. -

Good potential but expensive for what you get and not made for business travelers:
I've stayed in this hotel twice in the past few weeks for work. The hotel itself is nice, the rooms are in good condition with large flat screens and if you have time to play golf, the location is ideal. Unfortunately, I was here for work and pressed for time so that the many summer vacationers overwhelming both the restaurant and front desk made it difficult for me (for example, I couldn't check out because the line was too long). It would help if they had more employees working - the employees were very nice and very helpful, just overwhelmed. Note when they give you a room, if you get a room facing the courtyard/pool, everyone can see into your room. -

Low-key, no-frills, beige hotel
Good way to retreat from tourist crowds and craziness. Pretty much business suits, golfers and an occasional wedding. Nice and quiet. Hardly any kids running amok.
Clean and tidy.
Acceptable pool, smallish jacuzzi, and gym.
Staff is friendly and helpful.
Restaurant is what you would expect from a hotel restaurant. Only one complaint- The seared Ahi had GRISTLE. That was new and weird.
SPECIAL BONUS FEATURE (of uncertain value)
The toilet is in a small alcove and it magnifies all of the sounds accompanying a sit down toilet transaction times TEN.
Whoa.
HELPFUL TIPS
1) The handicapped room is right next to the elevator shaft which is noisy. Even noiser are the housekeeping carts that come barreling out in the early morning. LOUD. It's a quiet peaceful place except for room 3058.
2) Toilet visits. Get in and get out. Hum or sing to block out the thunder. -

We were stoked to reserve this hotel through Priceline. The location was adjacent to the Torrey Pines state park and a gorgeous golf course, however wasn't really close to downtown La Jolla or San Diego.
This is rated as a 4-star hotel, which I'm not used to, but they really lived up to that rating! The service was outstanding. Everyone in this hotel was extremely hospitable and nice. Everything was quality, from the bottom up. I could go into detail, but my raving review would then be endless. Room was fantastic. Hot tub was great. Buffet looked nice, although looked like more than we could handle during our stay.
I did, however, have a few gripes. Besides the location being far from central, they charge $20 for parking which was strange and unnecessary to me. Changing channels on the TV was difficult and slow. There is no free wireless internet in the rooms.
Overall, I would totally stay here again on my next visit down to La Jolla. Recommended!! -

Great place for a wedding. I had a room and it was beautiful and had a nice view. I was shocked that the hotel cheaped out and I had to pay $20 for parking. I was in the wedding party and we were there for the dress rehearsal the night before. They could do better on this part.
My friend the bride was treated well till after the ceremony. The bell hop was not allowed to take the gifts to the room without security..ok...they waited an hour and no one ever came. My friend in her bridal gown had to tote gifts back to her room. Then to make matters worse they gave her flower arrangements to another wedding party!!!! Come on Hilton get your crap together. -

My cousin had his wedding here last year. We went to visit the venue the weekend of the 3-day Breast Cancer Walk. The ballroom was set up for a silent auction and it was beautiful. It definitely makes a difference when you're able to view a venue that is set up for an event.
My least favorite part of the venue would have to be the fact that the entryway to this venue can be easily missed.Listed in: Nuptial Bliss

For how much I'm paying for this place vs. some other hotels in the vicinity, I was expecting a lot from the Torrey Pines Hilton - probably too much. My disappointment began when I find out that not ONLY am I paying $40/night than if I stayed at the Hampton Inn down the road, but I also don't get free breakfast, internet or parking. What?!? Really?!? That seems pretty lame...
Let me say that there are a few good things about this place: it's very close to the client I'm currently working on, it's in a beautiful location, and the hotel as a whole is very pretty. It offers room service and also has a good restaurant, from what I hear. Also, as an HH (blue) member, I got too free bottles of water in my room...woohoo. If you're a high-status HH member, you get more freebies like breakfast vouchers and stuff, but...I'm not there yet.
From the get-go, this place didn't sit too well with me, despite it's positive aspects. However, I was thinking, "Well, you pay more, so you get more...I'm sure the room will be awesome." When I walked it, the first thought that hit me was, "Wow, it's just like the Hampton only the room is bigger." That was about it. It had more squre-footage, and yeah ok, it had a flat-screen T.V. that was pretty cool, but...THAT'S what I'm paying $40 extra for? Yikes.
I think that part of my problem, though, was that I had a crappy room. I was ABOUT a mile from where I parked (I wish I were exaggerating...), and my window faced a wall. Nope, no pretty ocean view for me. Just a wall. Super.
As far as the bathroom went, although it was big, it had fewer outlet's (um, HELLO, I'm a girl!), less counter space, and the sinks were the ANNOYING public-bathroom-reminiscient ones where you have to push them down and then they slowly go back up to turn off. Only these didn't go up slowly, they went up quickly, so I couldn't even get half-way through a hand-washing before the water stopped.
The icing on the cake for me was the spider in my bathroom. Spiders don't gross me out, and there was no shrieking, but I was just like, "Yeah, that completely fits with the experience I've had here." I know, I know...spiders are a part of life, and they happen everywhere - even nice hotels. But let's just say that it was kind of the straw that broke the camels back. Since then, I've been at the Hampton Inn and haven't missed the Hilton yet! -

I have stayed at this hotel for the past three years, during an annual conference. In addition to the great rooms with awesome views, the amenities are great. The pool room, workout room, and gold course are amazing.
It definately has a resort feel, and is close enough for a drive down to La Jolla for a day trip, or just for dinner. -

Frank Lloyd Wright inspired mega-business/golf hotel that is a good option if you want to stay in a lovely area away from the hustle and bustle of San Diego. The rooms are nothing to brag about and the views are nice if you enjoy golf courses. Unfortunately the golf course sits between the hotel and the ocean, basically obstructing views and making beach access difficult. This is obviously a big plus if you're a golfer, however! Parking is easy, the pool area is pleasant, and the staff are helpful.
On two occasions we've been able to get rooms normally going for $250+ for $80 (biz trip during the week) to $150 (over 4th of July weekend) on Priceline. If you can snag a deal like this it's well worth the stay. -

We stayed here recently on a family trip. The hotel is beautiful, super clean and the beds are AMMMMMAAAAZING. We were not there to play golf, this hotel was just cheaper than others in La Jolla. If you are coming to La Jolla to play golf at Torrey Pines than you should definitely stay here.
But if you're not, I definitely suggest staying elsewhere. The drive to the beaches and downtown la Jolla is about ten minutes, not bad but there are places right by the beach that are equally nice and cheaper. There is no shuttle and to take the bus from the hotel to downtown or the beach requires a transfer. Cabs cost about $15-$20 from the hotel to downtown.
Also, Internet is $15 a day, parking is $20 a day and the restaurant is RIDICULOUSLY expensive and there's no free breakfast. :-(
All in all a nice hotel, but definitely wouldn't suggest staying here unless you are playing golf at Torrey Pines. -

Amazing view of the golf course!!! My co-worker had a room that had the hugest deck I have ever seen, overlooking the golf course!
Only complaint is that the room service isn't 24 hours and there really aren't any options for late night dining. What are hungry travelers supposed to do when they check-in at 11:30pm? -

Here for one night, Friday, for a work meeting on Saturday (on my bday weekend, aarrrggghh!). The hotel is sort of elusive. When the car pulled up to the circular driveway of the hotel, it seemed more like someone's extremely large estate. As you walk into the lobby you realize that you are on the top floor of this uniquely elegant hotel perched atop La Jolla's coastline overlooking the legendary Torrey Pines Golf Course and looking out towards the Pacific Ocean. In a few months this course will be host to the 2008 US Open.
This is a business trip so obviously I didn't get a "premium" room but my room actually had a nice view out onto the golf course with a glimpse of the coastline/Pacific Ocean. The room was quite spacious with a decent size bathroom. This hotel is rated as a 4-diamond resort. Too bad I'm rushing back to SF after the meeting tomorrow otherwise it would have been nice to play on the course where golf greats will be teeing off from in a few months at the upcoming US Open.
If you're vacationing in San Diego/La Jolla and golf is at the top of your things to do on your vacation...this place should be on your destination list. -
