I did a last-minute Priceline and got this place for like $54 ($68 after taxes and stuff) for a Saturday night stay, so I wasn't terribly disappointed. It's supposed to be 3.5 star, and I'd say it's actually 3 star at best... but I only cared that it was clean and in a decent location... and it met both of those needs.
I would agree that the place needs some repairs, and the $14 parking is complete nonsense. My room was clean, and the hotel is well-located for San Diego attractions. There's an excellent shopping center (lots of food choices) on the other side of the interstate, and I have no complaints about the noise despite being closest to the elevator and ice machine. I was on the 7th floor facing I-8, but we had no complaints about the sound of traffic either.
Good place to spend the night if you don't expect services and can get it on the cheap!
Our stay was pleasant at this Hilton. As others have mentioned you do need to pay $14/day for parking and $10 for internet in your room. You can get free internet in the lobby. Freeway access is close and the mall is on the other side of the freeway.
The room was very clean, plus there are ample electrical outlet for all my gadgets. The bed felt a little on the small side. They said it was a queen, but it looked like a double.
Some mentioned about the thin walls and I have to agree that I could hear a cell phone ring next door. But the plumbing for the shower/bath is a little loud.
The staff provided great service and offered any assistance they could provide.
I was satisfied with this hotel. Yes parking and internet are not included...but if you know what you are doing you can find bargains. I found a rate with parking, internet, and a hot breakfast included for only 10$ more/night than the regular rate.
Yes the hotel is off I-8 but I never heard any highway noise. My room was clean. Bed was comfortable. The breakfast bar was good. It was hot food and not just a bunch of pastries.
The location is convenient to lot of attractions. We were about 10 minutes from Sea World and the Gaslamp Quarter.
I would stay here again.
Another Priceline find. For $55/night, it ain't bad, but if I booked full price and thought I was getting a Hilton hotel, I'd be very disappointed. Location is terrible (it's near nothing) and yet they charge $14/night for parking. Internet is not free. And the hotel is just so blah everywhere else... no plasmas in the room. Our room was laid out super weird, with the TV on the side of the bed. Very uncomfortable to watch. If it wasn't so close to my wedding destination, I probably would have stayed elsewhere.
The Hilton - San Diego Mission Valley is average, at best. The hotel is in need of repair -- as many of the electronics, bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, doors, paint, etc. are worn out. For the price paid, I would have expected better. At the least, I expect Internet access and parking to be included -- free of charge.
Contrary to my expectation, Internet access is about $10 per day. Parking cost $14 per day.
Despite my dissatisfaction for what I paid, the staff were very accommodating.
I honestly don't know why everyone is complaining. After reading these reviews, I was nervous about staying here, but couldn't get a refund from Priceline's Name Your Own Price ($100/night on Friday and Saturday)
Luckily, it exceeded my expectations. And I have admittedly high ones, I've been spoiled by hotels in Vegas like the Venetian.
The room was clean, the bathroom was upgraded, the bed was incredibly, irresistably soft. We ordered room service for breakfast the previous night, and it arrived promptly at 9:30 am.
The hotel is ridiculously centrally located. It was 3.5 miles from the Midway Museum. 3.5 miles from the San Diego Sports Arena. 3.5 miles from Old Town. We went to dinner at Benihana, and it was literally a half mile down the road.
Parking was $14 a night, which sucks, but if you haven't noticed...places charging for parking is pretty par for the course in Southern California. I mean, Disneyland charges you like $20 effin dollars, concert venues and sports places charge, many restaurants and parking garages charge. Come on.
All in all, great stay, and highly recommend!
Standard Hilton Hotel with the usual amenities. Clean, nice Crabtree and Evelyn shampoo and soaps, and thick white bath towels.
In the Executive Lounge, I was disappointed that their hot breakfast was depleted. There were only scrapings of scrambled eggs and oatmeal left.
During the evening happy hour, the Sales Manager gave me a green tinted carnation because it was St. Patrick's Day. That's new coming from the Hilton!
Hotel is clean and rooms are decently sized
Executive Lounge on top floor for frequent quest
I booked this hotel for Labor Day weekend because it was a Hilton. Unfortunately, this is not your typical Hilton, it's more like a Motel 6.
For one, the rooms are noisy. The hotel faces I-8 so you hear the freeway traffic. Also, the walls are thin so you hear your neighbors, including their barking dogs because this hotel allows pets.
Secondly, the rooms are not clean. The carpet in our room looked dirty and had a nasty stain on it. This dirtiness applies to the entire hotel in general. Finally, the breakfast buffet that they advertise is nothing more than a continental breakfast with eggs, sausage/bacon, and potatoes, and looks nothing like what's pictured on their website.
There are plenty of other hotels near this hotel that might be better choices but I cannot vouch for them as I have not stayed at any of them. But based on my stay here, I will not be staying at this hotel ever again.
attended an 18th birthday party there and was found the decor to be the best one could find in mediocore hotel ballroom sites. i would call it modern but not in that offensively high class, bright and shine futuristic kind of way. a people pleasing modern that most people would describe as NICE.
its right off the freeway. parking is ample and guarded.
the wait staff should be given uniforms to match the decor. they looked a bit too frumpy and did not reflect well on the good food and pretty site.
Reminds me of a shitty hotel that got a minor facelift from a unlicensed plastic surgeon. Add a little granite to the bathroom, get some new lampshades - an wala! You have a Comfort Inn that charges you 4x as much.
The staff while able to execute a passable friendliness simulation; were less convincing when confronted with the tough questions like: "Where is my room?" or "How do I get to the 5?".
The slack-jawed valet staff (who both looked and behaved like they just tied for first place in a bong-hit competition) spent 15 minutes feebly looking for my car, in an almost empty parking lot.
All in all - there are MUCH better values in the area. This place blows.
I knew I was gonna have a great stay when they charged me $14/night for parking. As I left their garage, I looked across the freeway and saw the 12,000 spots available at the Fashion Valley mall and... *sigh*.
The staff was pretty friendly, but when your hotel is situated in a retail no-man's land, they're fighting an uphill battle. The room was fine, and the staff did a pretty good job of keeping the place in Hilton shape. The walls are a little thin (I swear my neighbor actually barked at 4:30 this morning,) and the plumbing on the upper floors is more than a little suspect.
If you're flying in from Europe to shop, I suppose that this particular Hilton property is an option, but if you're coming to town to experience the joys of this gorgeous city, stay downtown, for god's sake. It's worth the extra coin.
Stayed here thanks to http://Priceline.com. They met our really low price, but we got really bad service in return, go figure.
We rarely stay in hotels because of how tight our budget is. It has to be a really special occasion. It was our anniversary and we had over night childcare. So we stayed here for one night.
The room we got was connected to a conference room, but that didn't bother us...at first.
We had dinner plans at Dave & Buster's about 10 minutes away and wanted to get right over there, but we needed extra pillows so we called the conceriege and asked for them. We decided to wait for them since we didn't want anything to interupt our alone time when we got back from dinner & games. So we lounged on the bed, watching TV while we waited. The TV was not facing the bed so only 1 of us could see it at a time.
So I pulled the bed spread off the bed (those things never get cleaned) before I laid down to watch TV. The bottom of the blanket get kicked up a little, I don't remember how, then I noticed that there was blood on the sheets. Little dots of blood all over the bottom on the sheets, both top & bottom. Gross.
So we called the concierge who said that he would send someone right away. We reminded him about the pillows. So 20 minutes later, about to give up and just deal with it when we got back, the maid service shows up to make the bed. She doesn't have the pillows, saying they are out of extra pillows. Out of extra pillows? How does a hotel run out of extra pillows! So she says she will check some more rooms and finally comes back with pillows some time later.
Not so much as an apology from the maid, the concierge, the management...about blood on the sheets.
SO back to the conference room. Long about 7am I start to hear clunking and furniture moving and stuff in the next room. Now we had been up late. We went out. We had a liesurely dinner. We played games. We had dessert. We didn't go to sleep right away when we got to the room. 7am was pretty darn early. By 7:30 or 8 there was a full blown meting going on practically in our room. They were having coffee and bagels. They were talking about what they had done the night before. They were comparing scheduled for the day. I would have preferred sleeping!
So even at the low priceline rate, I would not stay here again. Not just because we had problems, but because the staff did not seem to care about fixing them or the inconvenience that they cost us. We might have been lowly paupers to them, but it was more money than we should have spent and the night in a hotel meant a lot to us.
$14 per day to park at a hotel you are staying at?
$15 for mediocre brunch?
This hotel might have the lowest advertised rates but they will nickel and dime you to death.
I've never stayed here, but the JOY in lights every Christmas makes me really happy :)
Nice, clean, modern room. Very small, but it was comfortable.
Nice "La Source" bath products from Crabtree and Evelyn. Powerful hair dryer. Thick towels. Nice lobby. Free wi fi in lobby. Awesome flavored fresh cold water in the lobby.
Problems? Ordered extra pillows that never came.
Maid entered the room at 9:30 a.m. to start cleaning. On a Saturday morning. WTF???
Walls are EXTREMELY thin. I heard every breath and noise from the hallway and other rooms.
Went to gift shop three different times during the day to try to buy sunscreen and water. Each time it was closed.
No visitor parking. Your guests either have to pay the $18 to park at the hotel even if just for a few hours, or they can risk towing and park at the teppanyaki place next door.
Overall, gets 3 stars cause I only paid $100 to stay here per night on a weekend nights (Fri and Sat) using Priceline. VERY cheap for peak times in SD.
This isn't so much a review for the hotel as it is more for the catering and hall rental. The halls are pretty small so if you plan on holding a huge gathering then forget it. Otherwise it's nice. The hotel catering was good. I had the chicken and a friend had the salmon. We both thought it was good. The bar was surprisingly cheap. What sucks is the parking. Some people ended up paying $8 for several hours. It's $14 per day. They have a small lot too so if there's a lot of hotel guests then you and your guests are suckin. It was worth 4 stars but the parking killed one star.
The guest services person was great. I was arriving around 2am and the Hilton customer service rep called the hotel for me to ensure that my room is not given away. I got the executive suite for a great price of $119 on a weekday. Room service was kind, room was clean. I loved the shampoo and conditioner from Crabtree and Evelyn. Most hotels only provide a combination shampoo/conditioners so it was a nice treat to have both separately. I chose the Hilton over the Hilton owned doubletree, because I heard that this Hilton had recently undergone rehab...and most importantly, it had a nice down comforter to make my business trip comfortable and relaxing.
stop 2:
four stars for letting us borrow those towels, crash the pool, wander around aimlessly, and for the concierge who informed us about the Hooter's located on the other side of the freeway.
