2 reviews for Hilton Garden Inn Hershey
Decent place to stay after a day sweating it out at Hershey Park.
Check in and out was quick and painless. Staff was very courteous and professional. There were chocolate cookies at the check in counter for the guest. They looked yummy but after a day of being choco-fied, I had to pass. Also complimentary bottle water. The rooms were excellent, clean and modern - had both microwave and refrigerator. Had a very comfortable, new ergonomic type desk chair. Nice bathrooms. Sometimes in these chain hotels, they do a facelift on the rooms but the bathrooms are old, not here. Nothing spectacular but by no means grungy. TV was not flat screen but I'm not that particular. Free room wi-fi but it was spotty.
I do not normally like to write reviews of chain hotels and restaurants, but I had to give mention to this gem of a hotel near Hershey Park.
While I have always enjoyed staying at the likes of the Garden Inn's less formal / less amenetiy laden cousin -- the Hampton Inn -- I think I have a new favorite in the same / similar price category . . . that being the Hilton Garden Inn. Quite frankly, until this trip, I have wondered what has separated the two similar style hotels and here is what I have found.
In this particular location at least . . . Apparently the Garden Inn, offers mini-fridges and microwave ovens along with the obligatory coffee makers in most, if not all rooms. The bedding and pillows seem to be more comfortable, they offer higher end toiletries, they have a "pantry" of items you may want or need during your stay -- including a small selection of forzen entrees to be used in your in-room microwave. And while the Hamton Inn might have some or all of these features, I prefer the prefer to way it is presented here at the Garden Inn.
And, lastly, there is the food -- while the Hamton Inn provides a semi-modified continental type breakfast (with some pre-prepared hot items in steam trays), the Garden Inn bests them by offering a buffet style breakfast AND a cooked to order (i.e. fresh made omlettes, waffels, etc.) -- and you get both the buffet and the cooked to order all for one price. But that is also where I have a slight problem -- although relatively inexpensive ($10 / adult and $5 / kid), I feel as though it should be a value added service that is part of the room rate. Then again, not having it built-in to the rate gives the option of going elsewhere I suppose. My only other slight gripe is that when they finish with their breakfast service, I believe they should keep the coffee / tea offering out longer than they do . . . at the Hampton Inn I know you can generally find coffee / tea throughout the day. They also have an honor type of bar in the evening where you can enjoy a cocktail if you care to -- but again, you are obligated to leave your room number and charge these drinks to your room. My only other slight gripe is that when they finish with their breakfast service, I believe they should keep the coffee / tea offering out longer than they do . . . at the Hampton Inn I know you can generally find coffee / tea throughout the day.
They also have a swimming pool here, and it seemed quite nice, but unfortunately we were unable to use it during our stay. Oh, and another nice thing about this location . . . it is on a hill and offers a nice view from the parking lot of the nightly fireworks (at least on the weekends), being shot off from Hershey Park.
If all of the other Garden Inn's are similar to this one, I will be looking to stay at them rather than the Hampton Inn if / when possible -- and if they price difference isn't too much.
