I stayed at the Del Mar Hilton a while back because we planned on taking a San Diego vacation but wanted to hit the Del Mar fair at the time and this place is right across the street. The rooms were comfortable and the employees were hospitable. The pool at the time was closed due to cleaning but the day before I thought there was a weird yellow color (ewww). Being as it is across the street from the fairgrounds and the racetrack I can see why they charge for parking so they don't get people trying to park there, but it should be validated for guests. When I was there I wanted to pay cash at the booth for the $14 daily parking fee so I avoided using my room key to open the gate but when I got my hotel bill they automatically charged me anyway. They were courteous enough to remove it though.
Since it was 4th of July weekend, we hit the front lawn and watched the fireworks from the fairgrounds with a bunch of other hotel guests.
If they got rid of the parking fee I'd bump up my review a star.

I was not the one who chose this hotel.. but next time I take a trip you can bet I'll do a little research and pick the hotel!
The location was too far from Del Mar restaurants and beach for the price they charge. It's literally bordering the 5 freeway. Ambiance?
The nearest dining is Dennys, and AM-PM. You cannot see the beach. The hotel is sandwiched between the freeway and the racetrack.
Our room was dirty. I went to make coffee, and the cups were totally unwashed. There was a strange substance all over the curtains. Maybe someone was shaking up their sun tan lotion and the lid came off, I didn't want to know what was on the curtains...merely why a maid didn't wipe or replace the obviously icky curtain well illuminated by the window!
-$14 a day for parking for hotel guests.
-$10 a day for internet, per computer, for hotel guests.
-$3 per bottle of water (these are in your room upon arrival)
I met some people on the beach paying $50 less a night at the Stratford Best Western. They were MUCH closer to the beach, free internet, clean room, no freeway noise, the business area of town was waking distance for them to eat and shop. That family may have had a smaller room than us, but I'd trade square footage for beach access, no bio-hazards and the price differance.
Next time I'll check Yelp and compare hotels!
The staff were mostly nice and helpful at Hilton. They told me how to drive to the beach and gave advice about parking and lunch. But we hadn't driven down to be so isolated from town or the beach.
If you are here for the race track, this might be a good hotel for you....if you don't mind strange fluids on the drapes and dirty coffee cups.

I liked this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. From that perspective, the place couldn't have been better. To be honest, I'd gladly stay here again if the situation warranted it.
So why the 2-star review? I'll tell you why: This hotel is run by cheap-asses. Here are a list of the bastard charges/lack of amenities that pertain to this hotel:
-$14 a day for parking for hotel guests.
-$10 a day for internet, per computer, for hotel guests.
-$3 per bottle of water (these are in your room upon arrival)
-No refrigerator in the room.
These may sound like nit picky things, but charges like these really start to add up and by the end of the trip you're just pissed off.
I mean, this is supposed to be a nicer hotel. You'd think that wireless would be complementary. If this were a Motel 6 I could understand, but not a Hilton.
To be honest, if it weren't for these nickel and dime fees I would have definitely given the place 4 or 5 stars. As I said, the staff was great and the grounds were nice. but paying $10-$20 here and there for simple things is really liable to leave a bad taste in a guest's mouth.
One of my worst experiences at a hotel, and trust me, I've been to my fair share of hotels! I used to live from hotel to hotel due to my work. Anyway, this is worse than a quality inn! The rooms were small and uncomfortable. Not only that it's overpriced, the service there was horrible! The only thing they had was a beautiful exterior! It's like Mean Girls, beautiful exterior, extremely UGLY interior. I'd have to say though, the outside is gorgeous, especially the pool area and the bar area. They have this seating area outside of the bar with a fire place, a lot of trees and flowers, and beautiful lights that lit up the pool giving you a very nice view. Too bad, that's the only good thing about this hotel. I would never come back to this place, or possibly any other Hiltons!

They don't treat guests who come with a group rate very well. They $10 and $20 dollar you to death. $14 for parking each day, $10 for internet each day, $8 for the two cups of coffee in your little coffee maker in the room, $3 for a small bottle of water, no refrigerator. At the budget hotel down the street they give you free internet, free breakfast, free parking, a free bottle of water each day, a free newspaper, free coffee in your room and free coffee all day in the lobby. The budget hotel also has a refrigerator and microwave in the room.
Ambiance, right!!: We were on the freeway on the third floor so we had a good view of the freeway when the lower floors could only see the tops of the cars streaming by. There are no views from any room in the entire hotel as the architectural style is early medieval fort. There is one elevator and it was a 5 minute walk to it from our room so it was easier to walk down the cement lined stairway, which was the recommended route from the desk clerk.
This is not a place to stay to enjoy southern Ca. This is convenient to the racetrack and fairgrounds. If you must stay here, negotiate free parking and internet as part of the reservation and get it in writing, Buy your wife jewelry with the money you save by doing this.

One of the better Hiltons that I've stayed in. Nothing special about the room, other than the fact that you could've fit a queen size bed in the bathroom. The one thing that I'd like to point out is that the gym was actually pretty good. Dumbbells up to 50 lbs and three top quality treadmills with TVs built into them. The pool area is a cool place to chill (the hotel surrounds the entire pool).
Let me go check my Hilton Honors points...

Just returned from a 5 day stay at the Hilton Del Mar, and I cannot say enough good things about this place!
I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews on here from prior guests - but when I got there, I had a wonderful visit!
The service was absolutely AMAZING - everyone from the valet drivers (all of whom were very cute by the way), to the front desk clerks, to the servers, to the night manager went ABOVE and BEYOND anything I could have ever hoped for.
The grounds were absolutely amazing with waterfalls, a fire pit, beautiful pool and spa, etc. We loved it.
I have stayed in many, many hotels across the country and honestly can tell you that the Hilton Del Mar is tops. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable.
The one and ONLY complaint I have is the $14 per day charge for parking........ in my opinion, if you are paying $130/night for the room, they should waive the parking charge, but - it is what it is.....
But as I said, it was the OUTSTANDING service and the friendly staff that will keep me coming back if I'm ever in the area again.
One star for the Valet staff. Most of the attendants were pretty nice.
As for the hotel, they definitely do NOT take a liking to guests that book through http://www.Priceline.com. I just got home yesterday and don't even feel like putting in all the horrible details. It just makes me angry. Maybe I'll write more when I can get over my shitty weekend because this hotel didn't understand the words, "Customer Service."
Btw, highlight of my hotel experience at the Hilton Del Mar:
Fecal matter on the toilet seat from the previous guests.
Yeah, it was absolutely disgusting. They didn't know to apologize for it.

This is a nice place to stay. The room was simple, but had a hint of elegance to it. The king room we had, also had a couch. It was very spacious including a large bathroom and mega screen TV.
The restaurant on site serves up a very nice buffet.
The hotel also has a fitness center, spa and pool on site and is located close to the I-5.

I was there for work and was lucky enough to get the Presidential Suite which was I must say amazing. As big as a house with two bathrooms and two TV's and jaquzzi jets in the sunken tub and a balcony with a patio and a wet bar, shall I go on? Sad part is I barely got to enjoy it as we were busy doing an event at the hotel. I liked the fact there was a rental car window in the hotel, I found that very convenient. Also the gentleman who drove the shuttle was funny and super quick. I was able to see several different places in the few days I was there. All in all it was a truly pleasant trip to San Diego.

This is a very nice hotel in appearance. The style has a reserved feel to it and more like a gentleman's lounge than a hotel with notably a racetrack theme; very fitting being that it is located right across the road from the Del Mar Race Track. The rooms are nice and the atmosphere is pleasant. The pool is great. A good choice as it is centrally located and around some of the best boutique shopping in San Diego.
The valet guys are nice and on the cute side. The staff is young so don't expect that NYC or LA attitude or level of customer service.

This hotel is clean and has an upscale feel from the inside, but is so unremarkable from the outside we drove right by it. It is right next to the highway, across the street from the fairgrounds/race track. If that is what you are there for, then good, but if you want to go to the beach or shop, pick another spot.

Excellent hotel, Love it and I will consider the hotel 4 and half * myself. The only negative thing about this hotel is right next to the high way; therefore you don't have nice view. But the room was very clean and it looks new. The hallway is very clean also. Excellent location right next to high way. Great swimming pool. Bar tender is very nice also. Love it love this hotel. Even it does take about 15 to 20 minutes to drive to downtown San Diego. I still think it's worth it. When you stay in a clean hotel it does make you feel fully rested

The Hilton was chosen because it supposedly be a nicer hotel, plus it's a skip to downtown Del Mar where I was there to attend a wedding (and shopping). At a glance, the hotel was somewhat pleasing to the eye. The Gold-Star status room was large in size with an impressively roomy bathroom. Had a relaxing martini at the hotel bar before heading out to dinner (restaurant review coming next). A couple glasses of a very nice wine at dinner had put me in a perfect state for some R&R at the hotel. I hate to say but it was a restless night. First of all I thought someone in the room next door had a bladder problem because the toilet I kept hearing it go off every five minutes. I couldn't really make a complaint about someone's...well, you know. The next morning, I discovered the noise actually came from my own toilet (had bathroom doors closed during the night). I studied the problem and requested a maintenance person to remedy it. It should have been easy -- I've done it at my house. I deliberately stayed away for 40 minutes for the job to be completed. Returned to the room only to discover the problem was not resolved. (sigh) To make a long story short, I had to move rooms twice and was sneered at by a Front Desk employee for speaking up (in a nice and calm manner). What ever happened to the "customers are always right" credo in the service industry? I was only seeking a quiet room catch some peaceful zzzzzz....Simple! The hotel's not bad. The services...well, you got the drift.
