Stayed at the Hilton downtown for a wedding. This is a classic style building that is situated next to the Mississippi. You can have river views from your room. The hotel was recently renovated and the rooms are very nice and modern. Not the biggest rooms, but they are OK and the beds are fantastic. The bathrooms are a bit small and ours could have used a little extra cleaning, but that was the only weak point we saw. The hotel is really downtown and well situated for a visit to sites in the city.

The staff is very friendly from the valet to the front desk. We received a very good treatment and everyone were very service minded. I would go back here anyway for a visit.

For government rate hotels in Baton Rouge, this will probably be in my top two (the new Residence Inn is my tops[http://www.yelp.com/bi...], but its always hard to get a room).

Yeah, it's hard for to really feel Baton Rouge, but I get a feeling for it when I stay at the Hilton downtown.  The building is old, but it's obviously been renovated and is a top notch place to crash.  I like the old-style rooms, and the bed & linens are totally crash-worthy.

The staff here is uber-friendly and helpful.  They have valet parking here, but generally, I've been lucky enough to grab a spot on the street right next to the entrance almost every time.

My only gripes (they're minor except for #3):

1)  I'm half a Northern Plains Native and Scottish chap, so I like the cold; so when I'm at a hotel I generally turn my room into an ice box--the AC was adequate here (coulda been colder).

2) I also was working an eve shift during my last trip, so I needed to sleep in. Their curtains could have been a little better at cave-ifying the room.

3) This hotel has a nice pool which has a decent view of the Mississipp.  But what I was wondering is, "where's the hot tub???"  If this place had a James "played by Eddie Murphy" Brown hot tub, this place would be perfection!
4) No continental breakfast (maybe this is the ghetto-ness in me, but I likes some free food!).  Actually, this isn't a bad thing.  It actually forced me to venture out and explore the offerings of downtown BR.

5) Downtown Baton Rouge is a bit dead (not the hotel's fault though!)

These are obviously minor & petty gripes.  Even with these gripes, I'd give this lodging option 4.5 stars out of 5 (get that hot tub, and you'll be my tops in the BR!).

Oh, and one interesting thing about staying here, whenever a co-worker asked where I stayed and I told them the Hilton, I always got some envious looks--so obviously the locals must like this place, and obviously locals know best.

Hilton at Capitol Center, thank you.

Visiting Baton Rouge for a wedding, I had the pleasure of staying at the Hilton in downtown Baton Rouge. The staff was the embodiment of true southern hospitality. From the valets to the housekeepers, the entire staff was exceptional. When I was distressed over not knowing where to go for the reception, the bellboy actually walked me to my destination a couple of blocks away.

The architecture was classic. Recently renovated rooms provided a very modern and elegant design with double bathroom doors and beds that your body melted into. While the breakfast, like most hotel breakfasts, is somewhat pricey it was absolutely delicious. It is a smorgasbord of savory delights such as fresh fruit, omelets made to order, scrambled eggs and pancakes.

To top it all off, the pool overlooks the Mississippi River. It's a stunning view when you're relaxing in the sun or taking a dip in the cool pool water.

Classic on the outside but modern hotel inside.  What a wonderful combination.  I love the architecture and sense of place of old hotels, but hate smelly old rooms.  This Hilton must have recently renovated because the rooms are fresh and clean.  I the view off the Mississippi is amazing in the morning.  The staff here is also super nice, real southern hospitality.

I'm really glad that this place was totally renovated instead of looking like a decrepit old man at the gay bar staring at you as it did for several decades.  The eyesore of Baton Rouge has become a neat place to stay and dine.  The Kingfish Restaurant in the Hilton is overpriced but its the Hilton so you kind of expect that.  The food is good though and the chef impressed me because that was the first time I ever went to a restaurant and received an Amuse Bouche (it was scallops and toasted french bread).  The martini bar is cool, the rooms are really nice (my sister stayed there for a conference and I went visit her).  What I really can't wait for is to go to The Tunnel, which was a tunnel politicians used back in the day to go to the whore house across the street!  It has been turned into a private dining room/wine cellar and I'm hoping my $600 government check will cover it (it probably won't but a white trash cajun boy can dream!)  I'm all about history and whores!
