Review from Chris L.
Rochester, NY
Headed out to the Highland Park Diner Saturday morning and was greeted with a packed parking lot. Not particularly surprising for mid morning and had to wait a few for a spot and about 10 minutes to sit down. Not too bad since there were only 6 or 7 people in line and we were all able to pack in the entrance way and stay warm.
We choose to split up a few things on our order and got a gyro breakfast sandwich, mushroom eggs benedict and some corned beef hash on the side. I was a bit leery of the gyro breakfast sandwich concept but they executed everything very well and it was delicious. The meat was as good as any I've had in Rochester and their tzatziki sauce was a perfect accompaniment. The eggs benedict had bunches of different mushrooms and everything was cooked very well. The sauce could have used a touch more lemon but that is a minor comment on an otherwise well executed dish.
The nice ting that we found was that their corned beef hash wasn't out of a can like just about every other diner in existence. It had a similar look but you could definitely tell the difference in texture and in flavour. The fresh fruit with both of our breakfasts were fresh cut and all of the pieces were tasty.
All in all I'd say this is the best diner I've been to in Rochester and when the mood strikes my girlfriend again we'll definitely make this our first choice! -

I'm not a big breakfast eater but Highland Diner offers some pretty unique twists to they typical breakfast spread.
Banana bread french toast with banana butter and pumpkin french toast with pumpkin butter are both over the top. Eggs benedict with lobster and asparagus smothered in hollandaise is too good. Milkshakes are also good if you haven't gotten your sugar and fat intake.
Seating is limited and there's really no place to wait, which can get rather uncomfortable. Its been jammed every time I go, and its easy to see why.
You will likely need a nap afterward. -

We were so excited to visit our first diner after moving to Rochester; after reading all the rave review about HPD we couldn't wait to try it out. Little did we know...we would be less than thrilled.
The counters were dirty, no one wore a hair net, refrigerated items were left out on the counter for extended periods of time and everything we saw from the counter was microwaved.
2 tiny omelets with a few homefries, 2 waters, 1 bagel=$20! I've been to far better diners with bigger portions and smaller prices.
Won't be eating here again! I hope the health inspector makes a visit asap! -

Don't come to this diner if you are on any type of a diet - their best creations are those served with pumpkin butter, banana butter, etc. or their rich hollandaise .
Don't forget a milkshake. -

what can I say....first off I have a love of anything pumpkin and with Fall approaching I never imagined to find Pumpkin french toast with Pumpkin butter! Absolutely loved it and hooked. I understand why so many love this place and these are the reasons why Rochester seems to be pulling me as a new could be resident! I may be leaving NYC soon and what will be on the top of my list? Yep Pumpkins :)

Stopped in with my daughter for a quick meal after the normal dinner hour, enjoying the extended daylight hours that the season affords. We both thoroughly enjoyed our food. I asked the waitress if I could have my mushroom & swiss burger cooked with a little pink in it and it was done to perfection. My daughter ordered the Jumbo hot dog and it was almost too much for her to eat!
It's been a while since I've been there; and I'm pleased to say that the new owners have retained the innate charm of the restaurant. Some reviewers may carp about the prices of the entrées, but it's my experience that you can spend the same amount or more at other establishments.
All in all, while I see some things have changed over the years, they do appear to be in line with delivering a fine product to the customers. -

Everything you would expect in a diner. The food was good, the friend chicken was worth writing home about, and the service was good.
Definitely check out the daily pie selection. I had a fantastic piece of pecan pie. -

Excellent food, great prices, good attentive service.
Two words: Turkey hash. This place has been around a long time and it's as good as it ever was. Kudos. -

I absolutely love the Highland Park Diner! It is a true classic diner experience: greasy food, bitter coffee, and slow (and sometimes even surly) service. Although, don't worry - most of the time the service is adequately timed and quite friendly!
I love the eggs benedict with tasty home fries - I have a very hard time ordering anything different here. However, I have tried various omelets and the breakfast sandwich and they are all satisfying. I'm not a big pancake person, but I'm told they are fantastic.
I've rarely come for anything other than breakfast food, but know that they have a killer turkey club, burger, and open-faced turkey sandwich.
The wait to be seated can be a bit long during breakfast and lunch hours on the weekend. If you get the chance, sit at the bar and you'll likely be seated more quickly. Another good rule of thumb is that if you are driving by and the parking lot is packed and cars are grid-locking like crazy, just keep on driving to your back-up location.
In any case, if you want some filling and tasty comfort food and a unique diner-car experience, you HAVE TO try Highland Park Diner!Listed in: When in Rochester...

The Highland Diner is always satisfying. The menu is extensive and creative for a diner. The food is tasty, and the service is friendly.
What I like best about The Highland Diner is that unlike most diners the food and ingredients are fresh. It doesn't taste like everything has just been dumped out of a tin can.Listed in: My Neighborhood

It is ok. Expensive for a diner. I wouldn't go back.

I went here before I needed to be somewhere important, which was a fundamentally flawed idea. The food cost a little more than it should have, but the portions and quality almost justified the inflation. The classic diner atmosphere is definitely worth taking in if you have the time and patience.
Service was about a 2.5 on a 5.0 scale: Correct order, courteous attitude, but coffee refills, order placement and check arrival were a little slow given that the place was not packed. I would go back if I had more time to spare on a Saturday morning. -

I almost broke my jaw tripping over the hidden first step into the diner. It's as ridiculous as it sounds.
My experiences kinda go downhill from there. All in all, it's too expensive, and their specials are too wacky.
I can get a full breakfast at other diners for less than $5, HP doesn't offer an atmosphere or quality of meals better than other folks, so why would I want to have a broken mandible with my refried bean tortilla egg plate with fresh cilantro salsa?
Just give me some eggs & coffee, make it cheap, and hire more attentive staff. -

A great classic diner, full of chrome and pink neon just like when it was built in the 40's. The food was really good, I definitely recommend the waffles with strawberries and sweet cheese, and not too expensive, plus it came with free coffee refills!

I thought this place was great! My husband swears that the Mexican Omelet we ordered here was the best he's ever had! He still talks about it over 3 years later! The classic diner atmosphere is not to be missed either :) Whenever we head back to see my family in Syracuse, NY, we'll definitely plan a stop at this diner!

Only four stars because the service stank! However, the place certainly is true to a classic diner style and the food was great. We ate outside on a nice spring afternoon. Check it out!

I ate at the HP many times when we lived in Rochester and always had a great experience. In fact, I eat there whenever I get back to Rochester because it's one of my favorite eateries in that city. The HP is a "classic" small diner and the current owner has kept up the good work of the previous (long-time) owner. The servers have always been very friendly and the food is always really good (a little pricey compared to other Rochester diners, but worth it for the atmosphere).

The Highland Park Diner is okay, but I think their breakfast prices are a bit too much. The dinners are fine. Unfortunately, nothing has the homestyle taste that you'd expect from a diner. There are better places in Rochester--go find them.

Rochester, NY
If you are looking for mediocre diner food served by hipster waiters who are too busy contemplating Kerouac to effectively wait on you look no further. I am not sure if it is new management or just a case of offnight-itis but my meal of a cup of chili and a gyro sandwich was certainly a lackluster experience. The chili was decent, but my would be artist/waiter got my gyro order wrong and it was mediocre at best. It was also overpriced at 13.99 total for the meal. It is in the evenings when I wish diners the caliber of Jim's or James Brown's had evening hours.

Hot omelettes ... many choices ... great service, in a real diner. Awesone! Try the smoked salmon omelette; you won't be disappointed.

A fantastic diner that takes the enterprise of being a diner seriously. The waitresses are hipsters and punks, but they wear classic black and white uniforms. Service is always very friendly. The food is good, and cheap! The salads are especially fresh. On off-peak days, dinner here will get you a discount on a movie across the street at the Cinema.
