Fort Hill Park (now officially called Highland Park) is sweet little patch of green perched up above a relatively nice part of Roxbury. If you can make the slog up the hill to here you're rewarded with a pretty decent view of Boston, The Blue Hills and JP to the south. It's not the best view in town but better than most things you'll see in this neighborhood.

The park was yet another place where George Washington fired cannons on the British from. yeah, yeah whatever, USA won that one. :p

Now the really good reason to come here (apart from a good spot for sledding) is to see the fantastic Cochituate Standpipe (aka Fort Hill Tower) - a tall water storage tower built 140 years ago that has been done up to look like some sort of Disney-esque castle tower or minaret. On my visit it was locked, but maybe in summer or at opportune moments they open it up and let you go to the top to take in the great view. And perhaps if you're follicly well-endowed and your name is Rapunzel you'll let down your hair from the top as well.

I lived here for 2 years and loved it. Our living room window looked out over the park and the tower, so we had a great view. The best part was that at about 530 or so, all the dog owners would bring their pups out, so it was always very social. I've actually been considering moving back, just so I can have a dog again. My Back Bay landlord forbids them, but it seemed like everyone on the Hill had one. It's only a 5 minute walk to Roxbury Crossing T station. And although, it is Roxbury, I never had any problems. It could, however be a little noisy from time to time. And my dog would occasionally find little baggies of crack. But she liked it so that's cool. I miss it greatly.

Great, Quiet little park.  Great for people who live in the neighborhood but not really worth the hike for those who do not.  Good place to bring a picnic lunch to or your dog.
