The staff here is remarkable. Full of knowledge and willing to let you ask questions for hours on end - even if you're not making a huge purchase.

It may be a little pricier than ordering online, but the time they spend with you to make sure you make the right purchase matters! They alos don't try to unnecessarily upsell you -- they meet your needs at your budget!

A non-chain outdoors store with good selection and staff that knows what they are talking about. A dying breed in the big city, you usually have to go out closer to nature to find a place like this.

The prices are competitive with the big outdoors and sporting goods stores, but the selection isn't going to be as mind numbingly large due to their relatively small size. But what they DO stock is the best of the best. Like Maverick in Top Gun.

They get a major bonus star or two with me for stocking my favorite style of hiking boots. Which sounds silly, but these are the ones I wore for about nine years and was misinformed by REI that had been discontinued when I finally went to buy a new pair. When I walked into High Country, they were on the shelf all shiny and with a beam of light shining through the ceiling on them as angels sang. Or something like that.

Anyway, finding the boots I thought I couldn't buy anymore made me happy and realize that the kids at REI don't always know what they're talking 'bout Willis.

As much as I like the conveniences of the big box stores, everytime I step into a small 'outfit' like this I realize what I'm missing out on.  Sure the "ultimate happiness guarantee" is great from those three letter places but the employees at High Country all love what they do and will give you the best recommendations.  I even picked up some new music from the guys when I got my jacket last time I was in.

Another +1 for them is that they carry the Big Green Egg (BGE)!

They also have a location in the avenue shopping plaza in Marietta (Roswell Road)

The best all around outfitters in the Atlanta area. They have a friendly staff, and a good product line. If you are planning a trip into the great outdoors or are looking to get into a new sport this is a great resource in the Atlanta area. Also they do support the local area, and sponsor a lot of different events.

As for my personal experiences with them:
    Backpacking 5/5
    Climbing 3.5/5
Mountaineering 4.5/5 - They were a big help getting me prepped for Mt. Rainier.

History

Established in 1975

High Country Outfitters came to be in 1975 when four friends with a passion for the outdoors realized the need for a full service specialty outdoor retailer in Atlanta. Bubba Sloan, Gerald Marshall, Denny Mays and Ned Buxton founded High Country to be a place where you could gear up for your next great adventure or learn to paddle, climb, and travel through the backcountry, or just stop in to shoot the breeze with the staff. Things haven't changed much. Bubba Sloan can be found at our Buckhead store keeping up on the latest and greatest. Gerald Marshall holds down the fort at Ocoee River where he welcomes people to the Southeast's premier whitewater at High Country's Ocoee Outpost. High Country takes pride in housing the very best gear and apparel as well as providing a highly qualified group of outdoor enthusiasts to help you find exactly what you need. We believe providing superior customer service creates customers for life.
