Hee-Day. Hee-Day. Repeat it with me folks. Not Hide like raw-hide or hide and seek, but HEE-DAY.
Great date spot for delicious sushi without breaking the bank. I agree with my fellow Yelpers wholeheartedly. I love the Yellowtail, Spicy Tuna, Mackerel, and Salmon. Don't forget the monkfish liver!!! Mmm. This is the first place I ever had monkfish liver and I am glad I took the chance.
Remember to bring cash, and if you come on a Friday or Saturday night at 8 pm, expect to wait. This place gets very crowded so it's best to eat here at non-peak hours.
I thought this place was fantastic. It's the bf's favorite spot and he is not misguided! It's super delicious at a fair price -- I am willing to shell out the dollars for quality.
Yellowtail was fantastically fresh and melted in my mouth. Toro, solid deliciousness. Salmon... even my black sheep salmon... was so so so fresh that I found it edible -- (I HATE salmon... ugh).
Haven't found a sushi resto that tops this so far. Be ready for a wait on a happening night, though.
I'm going to be harsh here, especially since (1) LA has plenty of great sushi places and (2) I've now found sources for really great fresh seafood.
We had finished our torture at the Y and hadn't taken out anything for dinner. Thanks to a 2.5 hour commute that day, it was already 9pm, so needless to say we just wanted something to eat. And - woo hoo - the Y is located next to about 20 restaurants!
We figured that we'd try Hide Sushi because of it's fantabulous Yelp reviews and because it would be easier to find meat-free options than, well, every Korean BBQ place.
So we get in and - oh wait - didn't realize that they don't take cash. Shucks. They do have an ATM, though, so J cashes money there... but it's kind of messed up, so he thinks he hits one denomination and gets another.
We got water and menus and then waited... and waited... and waited... When I hinted to J that we should just leave because we were both tired and hungry and gross at this point, a server came over to take our order.
I ordered the sashimi/tempura dinner combo, but asked that the tempura be veggie only ($14). J got the tekka maki rolls ($10). My dish came with miso soup - the broth itself was really good but the tofu wasn't - instead of using the silken tofu it was much more spongy. The entree also came with pickled cucumbers and some pickled cabbage, but they put shrimp on top of the cukes, so they were off-limits to me.
Then our sushi/sashimi came out. With local farmers markets selling me super-fresh tuna and plenty of great sushi places out here, I think I've been spoiled. Not only did the sashimi not melt in my mouth, but the texture was really off-putting. It was either cut wrong or just wasn't as fresh as it should have been. I choked down one piece and J (my knight in shining armor) took the rest. I tried his tuna rolls; they were better but still far from the best I've had out here.
And then there was the tempura. Well, it came out with shrimp on top, but they took the shrimp back and replaced it with all-veggies. Some pieces were better than others - but there were a lot of yam pieces that were way too starchy. Still, this was okay.
Also, the servers were nice, but we had to keep asking to get our water refilled while most of them just stood around.
The decor is interesting here. The ceiling has these painted tiles to look like a blooming tree. It was pretty clean, though. There's parking in the back; I noticed that some people had "validation" cards and the servers would just write a time on the back. Not sure how the parking works.
Redux:
- Doesn't take credit/ATM is ghetto: Minus 1
- Sashimi was icky/tuna rolls merely okay: Minus 1
- Servers didn't refill water: Minus 1
= 2 Stars... sorry guys, I just can't agree with these yelp reviews!
Yes, this is the neighborhood sushi bar I've been looking for. Too bad it's not my neighborhood - but I'll bypass sushi row in the valley and little tokyo for Hide Sushi.
Big American-sized fish pieces on the sushi - I like. No fusion/unfortunate ingredients/yuzu oiled/jalapeno/over mayo'd monstrosities - just good plain japanese restaurant food. I take my dad here.
Have to go to Torrance for an equivalent meal...
I've been going to this restaurant since i was about 5 years old. I absolutely love it!
-Cash only (there's an ATM inside)
-Closes at 9pm
- Fri & Sat nights get really busy around 7-8pm (the wait can be up to 30/40mins and they don't take reservations).
- When you get in and if there is a line they have a board where you put your name, number of people and whether you want to be seated at the sushi bar, table or either.
- They have take out
- prices are very decent for good sushi! (my favorite is the yellow tail and scallion roll, their green tea is delicious)
I have never gotten sick from their fish and it is always extremely fresh.
Small business with a cute vibe.
I take all of my friends there and they all keep on going back.
Service is generally fast and friendly
The place is always very clean.
They have lunch and dinner specials
Serve beer and sake
I durn saw where day hide da sushi here, and day dun hide the sushi at the counter, so I don't get why they dun call it hide sushi.
Before I get the message telling me it's "hee-deh" sushi", I'll say I was just mess'n wit chu foo cuz I really value Yelp, but after I read some of the more recent reviews I kind of get disappointed having to sift through 338 reviews, and here's why:
1. 2 star review from the dude disguised as the dude playing the dude imitating the other dude: Real crab? Well, most sushi restaurants get all their fish from the same market, so unless the fish market has fresh crab, they'll opt for frozen crab... "real" crab of course. This is the type of crab that comes in a huge frozen brick which can be fairly costly for most patrons who demand $1.99 California rolls or rolls in general, so it's definitely not worth using real crab. The next best thing is to use a mix of real crab and imitation crab for the California roll mix because it's very unlikely that anybody will be able to differentiate the difference when it's buried in a ton of kewpie (Japanese mayo).
2. The chic with 3 stars and 3 reviews: "the rice was not supposed to scatter when I tried to up the sushi. Real Japanese sushi is not supposed to be like that!". It isn't? I guess there's no real sushi "up'n" herrrrr". Well than, how much is it supposed to stick together? If you're mixing your sushi rice correctly, it is supposed to just break apart when you put it in your mouth because it's not supposed to be chewey. The process washing rice, mixing rice, etc is very tedious one, and I've had my fair share of being the sole individual in preparing sushi shari for the entire restaurant of 500-700 people a night. And if the rice did stick badly, it was because of incorrect soaking times, incorrect water/rice ratio in cooking, poorly washed/broken grain (starches released), or it was poorly mixed in the hangiri (breaking more grains).
3. Reviews in general about "small portions". Some of my fellow human's just love to concentrate on size (I pray most chicks aren't into size when I'm in there company) and big SUV sized everything. That's what kills sushi to some extent because size seems to be everything. Its also one of the reasons why you won't see Kumamoto oysters frequently on the menu because they're super small (about 2"), but they're sweet, brisk, and briney in flavor. It's also one that I enjoy, but the only downside is us big honk'n Americans like everything 3XL! So instead you'll get the largest oyster possible because us American's want to get our money's worth..... even if it sucks in quality (sidenote: the avg American women weighs 160lbs).
4. I'm not going to get into "freshness" because it might not be the fish, it might be you. Try douching.
My review for Hide is that the sushi chefs were very fast, and the service attentive, but I doubt I'll go out of my way to come here since there's too many other places fellow yelpers are suggesting..... I've got a lot of reading and sorting to do.
Pronounced HEE-DAY, not HIDE as in hide and seek.
This used to be one of my favorite sushi restaurants when I was a student at UCLA. I graduated years ago but I still frequent this establishment because my family lives nearby. For the price, Hide is hard to beat! Their sushi is reasonably priced and the lunch special (terriyaki + tempura + soup + rice) is one of the best deals around.
However, the last few times I was here, the food just wasn't as good as it used to be. The fish was not the freshest and the spicy scallop roll (usually my favorite!!) was too mayonnaise-y. Not sure if it was because I was there at closing time, but the food quality has gone downhill.
TIP: Hide accepts CASH ONLY, but they do have an ATM inside the restaurant if you're in need of some Benjamins!
It's tough to come up with something new when I totally agree with almost all my fellow yelpers, I love Hide Sushi. Used to work close by couple years ago, and a group of us would eat there at least two or three times a month for lunch.
Ambiance perfect Japanese style architecturally, and friendly service. While it can get pretty crowded, if we couldn't show up early the wait was not long. Most important of course the food, it was always fresh, and while we usually got a wide variety of sushi/sashimi, never had a negative experience even with the frequent visits.
After drooling over the reviews, made a recent dinner visit, and was just as pleased as always. I ordered a combo dinner "C", Teriyaki and Sashimi, so I'd get my traditional miso soup, which was flawless and delicious, a small vegetable salad, and rice to complete the sides; and of course with all the appropriate sauces and seasonings (wasabi makes the world go round). Got the chicken teriyaki; and as my sashimi selection chose yellow tail. It was a perfect meal and just what I had been craving.
My dinner companions went the sushi/sashimi route, and were very happy with their choices of spicy tuna rolls, yellowtail, shrimp, Toro, Catalina rolls, and more. Someone who looked like me snagged a few bites, and yes, they were all fresh and tasty.
Overall, Hide offers great quality and nice variety for pretty decent prices. Going back? Oh yea.
And, you can call in an order to get take out, but only on certain items. Also, don't forget they are closed on Mondays!
Ok, I have to revise my review of Hide upward.
I've been there at least 5 times since I wrote my original review. And the fish is usually great. Sure, sometimes the fish is sliced raggedly/thinly, but I have never again encountered fish of such poor quality as I did the first time I went.
The chirashi is still one of my favorite comfort-food dishes in town. I've also since discovered the spicy tuna rolls - while I usually don't order spicy tuna (sushi snob! :D ), they are delicious at Hide - spicy, not too rich, fresh fish, big portions.

Hide, I'm totally over you. Apparently your quality standards have gone way down because the fish… Read more »
I have been to Sawtelle so many times... I even lived in that area for a while... I LOVE sushi... yet, this was my first time going to Hide Sushi.
I went during lunch time before going to the beach. It was a hot day so we wanted something fresh. We decide to go to Hide sushi for their lunch special! We get there at 10:40 and there was already a line in front of the store (they open at 11am) About 5 minutes after the restaurant opened, the restaurat was FULL. It was 11am on a saturday morning at a sushi restaurant, and it's already FULL? I was so amazed.
I ordered a Chirashi Sushi~ my favorite! Variety of sashimi over a bed of vinegar rice. mMmMmM can't get any better than eating Chirashi on a hot Saturday morning! Fish was fresh, rice was cooked and cooled with vinegar in perfection... maybe a little too much rice for the amount of fish. I think it was about $11? I don't remember exactly, but I remember thinking it was sooo cheap!
I liked it! 4 stars!
I went here with a friend for lunch. She grew up in the neighborhood and this was the sushi place her family (from Japan) always came for Sunday dinner, so its authentic. We had to get there early because there's only a few seats and it fills up early. No credit cards so bring cash (and plenty of it because like most sushi places a few pieces then a few more add up quickly).
The sushi was good. Very traditional. No weird American fusion rolls here. If you are looking for a hip sushi place with sakitinis go elsewhere. There's plenty of those in LA. If you are looking for an experience of the traditional Sawtelle Japanese neighborhood this is a real find.
They have valet parking for a nominal charge, which is a bonus along Sawtelle.
The place is good and fresh, but yes a little pricy for the quality. Service is professional and expedient. Be prepared and bring cash since they don't accept credit cards. But don't go there by yourself. You will save a lot of money buying the same quality sushi at Nijiya Market across the street.
this place is pretty good. i found the prices to be really inexpensive and the quality of food to be pretty good, considering the prices. i remember back in college i thought this place was really good so i went back a month or so ago with an old friend. we ordered the tempura and also sashimi and he ordered the beef teriyaki. all in all, quite delicious, low-key envirnment, traditional japanese but not overdone. kid friendly.
i had a good time. i would go back if someone invited me.
Sushi was good, but might have been overhyped for me.
This is one of my super favorites in town. Great fish and super fish, and then really good fish make this a place you ought to sit down in and try the fish.
I've spent a number of nights enjoying my lover's company here, and I so enjoy her smiling from a quality sushi cut. She tried uni for the first time here, and she liked it so much that she has had bad uni at so many places and won't stop eating it. It was like the experience here set such a standard, that it will never be broken! If only we all had that same Uni experience. Oh wait, I did! If only YOU all had that same Uni experience. Well, you can,and I hope you do. Remember to bring some cash, and I hope you don't mind a slight wait. The fish is worth it!
Excited by the Yelp reviews, a group of 5 of us headed to Hide for a Sunday sushi lunch. Those among us who weren't experienced with sushi thought it was a pleasant enough experience, but the others (myself included) have definitely had better for a lower price. The telltale fact was that they did not have kani (crab) sushi, which leads me to believe, as other reviewers have noted, that the crab in their rolls, etc. is not real. Boooo. The salmon and tuna sushi were pretty good, but slightly overpriced for the quality (~4.50 for two pieces).
Echoing others, Hide is cash only.
Seating is best with a group of 4 or less.
Too bad. I wanted to like this place.
If you haven't been here yet, do yourself a favor and check it out!
Free little parking lot in the back (just tip the guy a few bucks and make sure you get your ticket validated). Also lots of free street parking one block west. Careful with the metered parking -- the ticket nazis are serious out there!
As you walk in, if it is packed (usually is for lunch and dinner every single day they are open), you just write your name on their waiting list and have a seat along the wall.
The menu is pretty extensive with tasty options for vegetarians (more than just the usual veggie rolls!). My husband LOVES their sashimi (tuna and salmon are especially good, he says) and they also have delicious miso soup with chunks of tofu and spinach. I really like their rolls and seaweed salad, Everything is fresh, delicious, and the portion sizes are good enough to actually fill my husband's tummy (if you knew how much he can eat, then you'd be properly impressed).
The restaurant itself is actually pretty big inside, for an affordable sushi place. It just gets packed, so try to come early or don't arrive too hungry or else you'll be clawing at your face and drooling on yourself. The decor is cute too -- nothing fancy, but clean and bright and cute.
The waitresses are hilarious! I love them! They don't smile too much, are often a bit rushed or curt with customers, and just don't take any shit. They aren't mean or rude, they are just "over it." If you have a lot of older Asian women in your life, then you'll know exactly what I mean. :)
Thumbs up for sure. Definitely check this place out! This is our west-side yummy affordable sushi spot.
WIth regards to price: expect to pay about $10-$15 per person for lunch and $15-$20 per person for dinner.
Sushi is very good. Atmosphere...I dunno, I am usually a fan of humble, unassuming atmospheres. Even semi-loud/crowded ones. But, the seating at the sushi bar is INSANELY cramped, and it gets very, very hot in here. Also, the lighting reminds me of the fluorescent lighting in my middle school cafeteria! Not bad prices, and very good sushi - but, $%* this place could benefit from a serious facelift ... maybe some ceiling fans, turn down the lights just a little?!
My first time here, I walk in and one of the waitress' points somewhere behind a big tree. Turns out that's where the sign in board is. Maybe they should move the tree so its not hidden.
Seated in a few minutes, ordered dynamite with scallops, uni, eel and cucumber roll, sashimi dinner set, and a spicy tuna roll. This was for 2 people by the way! Not just for me! The dynamite was delishh...really wish they hadn't run out of clams! Uni was soooooooooo good...so smooth. I savored that one. Eel roll was fresh, but didn't even taste the eel really. Small piece in there. Sashimi, had salmon and yellowtail, good thick pieces and very nice and fresh melty in your mouth. Spicy tuna roll was disappointing, I barely tasted the spice. It was like they just chopped up tuna and forgot to do anything to it.
Overall prices here weren't too bad. Thought it would be more expensive, but then again I don't eat a lot anyhow and that night I had a small dinner actually. Sushi is fresh and good. Cash only though, but they have an atm right near the door just in case.
Service was good. Our waitress popped up literally 5 seconds after we were seated to ask us for drinks. Then 1 minute later asked us if we were ready to order. It was kinda funny, she just kept coming out of nowhere. After that she left us alone for a bit longer before coming back.
Hidi sushi is a cash only place, considering the quality of the fish, price is very affordable. It seems always a line in front of the restaurant no matter lunch or dinner time, unless I went there extremely early. I love their sashimi, sushi, seaweed salad and veggie roll, supper fresh and delicious. If you love the real traditional Japanese food, for sure try this place.
My husband and I went to Hide on last Friday. It was extremely crowded even when we got there around 8:30PM.
We sat at the sushi bar. Immediately we noticed the chef was busy taking order, doing chores, such as giving the bill to the reception, and making sushi at the same time. The chef was not washing his hands in between!
The sushi quality was fair for its price, but the rice was not in place. What I meant was that the rice was not supposed to scatter when I tried to up the sushi. Real Japanese sushi is not supposed to be like that!
This place is overrated...
My coworker introduced Hide to me. Too bad it's far from where I live, otherwise I'd eat there everyday....well, not really......maybe once a week =)
Comments:
Blue fin Toro: Good
Albacore : good
Hamachi: Good
Uni: oh sooo gooooood (and reasonably priced) OK, Hide, don't start raising prices after reading my review!!!
Ankimo: goooooooood
Unagi: good
Giant clam: hmm...so n so
Beef teriyaki + tempura lunch special: so so....i think Tokyo Lobby's is even better
Like y'all already know, it's CASH ONLY. Don't worry if you broke-a$$ don't have cash, there is an ATM machine inside. Just prepare to pay transaction fee (that worth another piece of nigiri)
Waiting for tables can take very long, expecially during dinner hour but I found a slot of time when it's quieter and no wait....nah, im not telling!
Parking: go park at the back lot. it's free with validation.
Sorry to say, but this restaurant was overrated! The place was packed when we got there, and the service suffered when we finally got to sit down. The sushi was just ok. There was nothing special about this place. I guess they wanted to make it as authentic as possible, and closer to homemade Japanese cooking, unlike one of those Americanized Japanese places with those fancy rolls. My sister and her bf were disappointed that they don't even have rolls with cream cheese! I had their unagi roll, which was just two pieces of sweet eel with a price tag of $5. Not worth it to me. I also had their sashimi dinner, which was $12 for miso soup, salad, rice, and a few pieces of salmon and tuna. I have to give them some credit for having some fresh sashimi, and great green tea, so that's why I'm giving them 3 stars. Eating here was not worth the 1 hour wait...
Be ready to spend close to $20 a person to eat here...
Hide won my heart with its combination of high quality and low cost. This is my go-to sushi spot when all I want is some great tasting sushi, nothing fancy or expensive. For a ridiculously good value, order the Nigiri sushi combination or one of the other sushi combinations on the menu. With these combinations, I realized this high quality sushi ends up being as cheap as grocery store sushi! This is the best place in LA that I have found for great sushi at a great price.
The only downsides to Hide are that it's cash only and at times the wait can be long, but usually I don't end up waiting for long at all. If you do have to wait, you can always walk across the street and shop at Giant Robot if it's open. The free valet lot here is nice, and another plus is that you can walk to Yogurtland for dessert down the street...
Finally, a place that isn't mayo-happy with their scallop rolls! The Special Scallop roll was fresh and delicious...I mean, c'mon... scallops smothered in roe? What's not to love?
The other items we had were the spicy tuna roll, the freshwater eel roll, and the salmon nigiri. The nigiri was the perfect proportion of fresh salmon to rice: a huge slice of fish versus a little bit of rice. Plus, there wasn't any wasabi hiding inside, waiting to burn me senseless (or to the point where I wish I were senseless).
Portions are quite generous here, and lunch for two (plus a 20% tip) came out to only $26. After reading the other reviews here about the bad service, I was pleasantly surprised to have an attentive, cheery waitress.
What I was not pleasantly surprised by was the fact that I had to park my own car and pay somebody to watch my car keys for me. I'm sure my keys would have been equally safe, if not safer, in my purse. I returned to my car after lunch to find that somebody had added a few miles to the odometer of my '98 Corolla. More amusing that annoying, really.
This place is cash only!
I had the yellowtail and tuna sashimi and I thought it was cut really well and tasted great.
The salmon skin salad left a lot to be desired. There was barely any salmon in the salad, and it was packed with sprouts, which are not my favorite. There was no vinaigrette dressing, just the ponzu sauce.
My friends insisted on the California rolls, but I found myself liking it quite a bit.
The miso soup is normal, nothing special, but still warm and yummy in my tummy.
Next time i go, i'll stick to the sashimi though. Prices are a bit steep, but not bad. I also eat tons of toro which are at market price...but I held off this time because I was with people that don't eat sashimi regularly...and would faint if they saw my bill.
Seriously, I don't understand why this place has high marks and there is always a bunch of people waiting to eat here. There are other spots on Sawtelle that have better sushi than this place. The prices aren't that cheap considering the portions are on the small side. I thought I would give it a second chance, just to see if I was missing something..alas, I still feel the same. It's overrated and not worth the hype. Both times I have been here, I left feeling unsatisfied.
Bad service, and a bit*** waitress will always trump great food, "maybe I reminded her of her X........who knows."
Hide happens to have some of the better fish in the area, and it's very reasonably priced. However the waitstaff has a major attitude problem. In fact, the several times I've been to Hide no one has even shown a flicker of a smile. Perhaps its better to sit at the bar......
I won't be back, I don't eat out to deal with bad attitudes from the staff. Whether you agree with something I ask for, say, or do shouldn't matter. If I'm willing to spend money at your restaurant I expect to be treated well.
I smiled, nodded and said "uh huh... uh huh," while I pretended not to stare blankly at my friends as they conversed across the table and the surrounding loud conversations blended together into a foreign sound that I could not comprehend.
I smiled, nodded and said "uh huh... uh huh," while I have stopped listening and got into a rhythm of smiling, nodding and savoring my cheap bowl of chirashi and enjoying the taste of high quality, fresh sashimi over a bed of rice, nori and strips of sweet egg.
I smiled, nodded and said "uh,huh uh huh.. WAIT WHAT?!" as my friend asked me a question and realized that I haven't been listening. Oh well. I have sold my soul to the Sushi devil and traded the ability to hear my friends for fresh tasting traditional sushi at a non wallet-breaking price!
p.s. shout out to the ATM machine, who saved me from becoming an indentured servant to Hide because VISA lied. It's not everywhere I want to be. Cash is king.
Okay, I gotta downgrade this rating. I came here for lunch on Friday, the service from beginning was just okay, then it was becoming better, then towards the end, it just became bad again, everything was so slow...
We both ordered the lunch special combination, the chicken/beef with tempura for $8.90, it didn't come in like bento box, but more like a home-made plate, totally not what I expected. And the meat was so tiny that we both finished the meat before finishing the rice, it's just so darn tiny. Taste wise, just boring, plain usual teriyaki sauce and the tempura, well, let's just say, it's a tempura, nothing special about it.
I saw lots of people willing to wait to sit at the bar, I guess that would be better, considering all the chefs are real Japanese, I certainly hope the sushi could overcome the bad service. I saw a person beside me ordered a negi-toro, from the look of it, soooo NOT fresh. I would probably come back to judge the sushi myself, otherwise, I would not come back for anything else.

I live just a couple of blocks away from this hideaway. I thought this was a house that someone… Read more »
This place is extremely crowded. You end up waiting for an hour for a table.. but this is the price you pay for extremely cheap sushi (without the cheap sushi taste). It's not my favorite place because of two reasons:
1. Contrary to what people say.. the sashimi slices are not huge. They are fresh.. but they are really average. They need to go to Sai Cafe in Chicago if they want to know what large slices look like.
2. There is no fancy sushi here.. no fancy rolls. I didn't like the special scallop roll but I am not a fan of refrigerated scallops mixed with sauce. So.. there isn't a lot of choices on what to order. At least for me... the rolls are not HUGE either.. they aren't small either.. in between in my opinion.
I think three of us ate lots for $25 per person.. that's incredibly cheap.. especially since I think two of us had beers.
Best part.. you don't need to look for parking for your cars. There is valet and it's free... of course there is a cost if you want to tip the guy. Up to you.
+: The BEST sushi I've ever had in my life! Like, close your eyes and cry a little good. Bonus points for not being expensive!
-: They opened up at 11:30 and was packed with people writing their name on a list by 11:35. No joke, get here early!
!: The toro and scallops were my favorite! I requested a moment of silence from my fellow diners while I ate these, don't laugh, you will too!
?: Can't believe I didn't try this place sooner! Special thanks to my brother Danny for the enlightenment.
no frills rolls, minimalist presentation, excellent quality & freshness - this is my kind of sushi, and Hide is always one of my favorite places to get it.
everything i had for lunch today was excellent. nice, minerally tuna, creamy salmon & yellowtail, clean uni, sweet ikura, briny tako, and the amaebi... mmm, some of the best ive had in a long while.
this place is like a well oiled machine - ive seen places that sat many less people with just as many people behind the bar be much slower. they have a board for you to write your own name down with either an 'S' for sushi bar, 'T' for table or 'S/T' either/or. being just 1 for the sushi bar i had no problem getting a seat despite the place being packed. as others have said, cash only so be prepared, and you might have to wait if you come in a sizeable group, but it's well worth it.
the prices are fair - not the sreaming bargain you can find downtown, but about on par with anything on 'sushi row' in the valley. my lunch, 2 pieces each of - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, squid, octopus, uni, salmon egg and the sweet shrimp, along with a small bottle of Hakutsuru came out to about $60 w/ the uni & amaebi being 'mkt price'
if you're like me and traditional japanese sushi is your thing, this is your place on the westside.
Good sushi for a really reasonable price. Not the best I've had but good quality that's close to work so it's a regular spot for me. Slow service so go with a flexible time frame and you won't get frustrated!
Yum, Yum, and YUM!
This is one of the best sushi places I've ever been - everything that I had was fantastic, fresh, and delish.
My favorite was the scallion/yellowtail roll but a close second was the albacore nigiri w ginger. The sashim was excellent as well.
The ambiance is just okay - nothing fancy - and a long line at 1:30pm on a Sunday afternoon. But its definitely worth the wait. The service was great as well - very friendly and knowledgable.
anyone who orders chicken teriyaki or anything other than sushi should just go elsewhere because they are wasting their time and more importantly our time in line. This is the place to go for reasonably priced fresh sushi. The portion size is generous and the sushi chefs are skilled. True the service is not the best but what do you expect for a hole in the wall basic sushi place?
Recommend the hamachi, toro, amaebi, saba, and anything the sushi chefs recommend. Love the ankimo. The sashimi pieces are huge and the ponsu tastes better than the bottled stuff I use at home. Their rolls - even their basic rolls - are huge - (i.e. the negitoro, spicy tuna, etc.) If you can get a seat at the sushi bar, you'll get the best service.
Cash only makes it inconvenient but I think it keeps the price low. They are also closed on Mondays. Parking can suck. It can be really crowded. So all you teriyaki and tempura eaters just stay out and leave this place for us sushi lovers!!
i love hide! i love yuji! but i am so sad that hide has started using artificial crab in their california rolls (and for that i must dock them one star). i've come to find that certain sushi places are known for certain items, and hide is no different. must "gets" include tuna, salmon, albacore and hamachi. i would pass on the toro and now, sadly, their california rolls. their yellowtail scallion and spicy tuna (get it without mayonnaise) rolls and tempura are great, and the miso soup is a steal at $1.50.
i probably eat here at least once a week and although for edo style/fish purist sushi lovers, i might recommend echigo or sasabune, this place certainly can't be beat for the price/quality ratio. come prepared to wait, especially on a weekend. and bring cash.
Hide is pretty darn good if you're looking for real sushi at reasonable prices. For a sizable meal that included some above-average items like ankimo, uni, the clam and scallop dynamite and the scallop special, I only spent about $35 including tax and tip. The food and service are good enough that you don't even mind the long wait to get seated or the fact that it's cash only.
The only reason why I wouldn't give this place 4 or more stars, and really rank it at around 3.5 is that while the sushi was good, it wasn't great. I could get way better fish at a place like Mori or Sushi Zo (although not at the budget prices you'll find at Hide). Also, the tempura, which looked really appealing and which most of the other diners were ordering, was quite bleh. I'll go back to Hide, but will just stick to the fish next time.
Nothing spectacular. This place has pretty solid tempura and teriyaki. Since I quit sushi, the only raw fish I eat has to be sashimi.
This place is crowded, even after the noon time rush. When I went here, I had to wait nearly half an hour and write my name on the whiteboard. This place does quite well for itself, business-wise.
Anyways, the cucumber roll was interesting. Interesting, because I cannot find another word to describe it. And it is not a good thing. It must suck to be a vegetarian in Japan. My aunt is vegetarian, and she didn't have much to eat. The veggie sushi was definitely not too good.
The other food was solid, though. So this place garners 3-star as of now. I have yet to try their fatty tuna sushi, so I hope that the sushi will wow me.
meeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
