Hidden Valley Ski
4 reviews for Hidden Valley Ski
For being usually fake snow in the Midwest, this place is good. I've been here to ski a few time and a place in KC to ski.
There's no way to compare it to places with real snow. But for being a "mountain" (hill) outside of a big city, it's not bad at all.
Sometimes they don't have all the runs open and it gets crowded quick. I came here as a boy scout and an adult.
They have a cafe to get snacks for those who aren't brave enough to face the cold (or sometimes the warm) air.
Got in trouble for skiing down big hill strait on and they made me take skiing lessons after I wiped out. Got people on lift above to scream if I was ok.
This place is as good as it gets mostly because there's nothing to compare it to. It's the only place to ski within a few states. And they don't do a bad job of making a series of midwest hills into a decent ski resort. This is actually the place where I learned how to ski before going to Colorado. I didn't think the ski mountains of Colorado were that much better, but then again, that's just my opinion.
They have their own snow making machine that they only bring out if the weather will hold snow for a week or more (so the temperature has to be under 25 or so for a decent amount of time). Depending on the winter, this may or may not happen very often in Missouri. Making plans to go here are often last minute.
Ski rental can be cheap or expensive depending if you go during the midnight ski times or if you go as a group. The midnight ski time is the best deal by far: under $50 for rental and admission.
I've been coming here since I was a kid, and while it most certainly pales in comparison to the offerings of Colorado and the like, we have to keep in mind this is Missouri. As in, cows, farmland, and a few hills thrown in. That being said, Hidden Valley is on the expensive side, which I assume comes from only being open for a few months out of the year. They have to stay afloat somehow.
I love the little lounge area where you can order hot chocolate and candy(all overpriced, though) and sit by the fireplace. I also like that they offer midnight ski passes for a bit cheaper. They manage to have a variety of skiing and snowboarding difficulty, and I'm glad some of the rope tows have been replaced by more modern apparatuses. All in all, it's a fun place to be on a winter weekend, falling on your butt and having a good time doing so.

Eh... this place isn't exactly cheap considering the size of the place and what they have to offer aside from skiing...barely anything. Weather around the area doesn't give you a lot of below freezing conditions very often, even at midnights, so you're stuck with slushy hills...but hey, what are you gonna do if you don't want to drive up to Wisconsin?
