I lived here for nine months during my first year of grad school and was so glad to be out of there. The apartment is OK but given the price, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Positives - my apartment was huge and I really liked the fireplace and built-in bookshelf. I paid extra for covered parking which was really nice in the winter (didn't have to clean my car from the snow). I lived on the third floor so the laundry was really close by and there seemed to be enough washers/dryers for the building. The gym and racquetball court were also really nice. I found the staff (especially Cora) to be very friendly. You're also a very short walk from the AATA bus line (although route 36 was always cramped and took forever to get to campus).
Negatives - My apartment was very dark and got very little sunlight (there were not enough windows). The bathroom and kitchen were very 70s (dark brown wood) and really needed to be renovated. The carpet and tile was very old and dirty. The paint job on the walls was very low quality. Overall, the apartment was very dirty when I moved in (nothing like the model I saw when I pre-leased it).
Maintenance was usually quick to respond but didn't do a very good job. I think it took them three or four visits to finally replace an old leaky bathroom faucet.
The apartment community is very very noisy (especially at night and on weekends) and I never felt safe. It is not well-lit and there were always people screaming and fighting in the building across from me. I could hear my neighbors fighting all of the time or hear their baby screaming.
The apartments lack character and are in desperate need of renovations.
Hidden Valley is also very far away from campus and downtown Ann Arbor.
