We stopped into Hibachi the other evening when we were up in Westminster catching a movie.  It was Thursday night and there was a band playing on the patio at Rock Bottom next door.  I'm a big fan of hibachi restaurants so we decided to check it out.

First impression was that the name of the place is not very creative, but hey..

As already mentioned, you have several seating options in this large and open restaurant, it looked like there were 4 or 5 group tables with the grills, and then a full dining room.  Due to time constraints, we chose to sit at a regular two-top, the menu is the same either way.

We split the filet mignon from the grill and a roll.  The food was decent, but nothing to write home about.  There was a limited number of sauces for the meal, and they didn't have the sauce that I usually get.  That was unfortunate, but not a huge knock against the place because many places use different sauces.

They had a couple of interesting hot saki mixes that were pretty good.  The service was good and quick and we got out in plenty of time to see our movie with leftovers.  The portions were pretty large, but also a bit pricey.

All in all, the experience mostly renewed my desire to find a good hibachi place, I don't think this is the one, but it was a good re-introduction to the style.  It's about exactly what you'd expect next door to a Rock Bottom and the movie theater.

Last night, hubby and I went to one of our favorites called Hibachi Japanese Steak House & Sushi in Westminster.  We started with one of the specials called "New Style Sashimi."  It is served on a stark white platter with five thinly sliced pieces of yellow tail tuna.  Each slice has a shaved piece of fried garlic and jalapeño with a Japanese citrus sauce called Yuzu dressing.  It was light and fresh.

Next was the "Spicy Tuna Roll."  This was to die for.  Traditional sticky rice, tuna roll that melts in your mouth.  The tuna was so fresh I thought I was at the beach.  No after taste-just clean, fresh, tuna rolled with cream cheese.  Then we had the "Red Dragon Roll," crab, blanched asparagus, topped with spicy tuna and rolled in Panko bread crumbs.  Finally, we had our all-time favorite, the "104th Roll."

As many times as I have ordered this popular item, I am never disappointed.  The consistency and the fresh fish at Hibachi is why I keep coming back.  Roberto, the Sushi Chef that prepared our meal, is my favorite.  This dish is made with Albacore tuna, cream cheese, and avocado, cucumber, swimming in Panko bread crumbs, thick aged soy sauce, and Sriracha hot sauce.  It goes down like a dream.  I love eating finely prepared sushi because it is like art, you do not want to rush it.  You sit, drink good wine or Saki, experience, and then leave feeling full but not bloated and uncomfortable.

I have noticed in the last year the rolls are getting smaller at Hibachi but I don't care.  I am still going to there.  Isn't everything getting smaller in this economy?  I noticed the last time I went to Wendy's the burger and the buns are smaller.  We are victims of our own greed in America, and it's sad.  Our entire bill with two other items I did not critique and two alcoholic beverages, was $76.00 before tip.  I still think that is a good deal for what you get at Hibachi.

Yes, this is the sort of place where you have a cook grilling on a table in front of you as you are surrounded by several other strangers.  If you order something grilled up on the table, it's alright... nothing great.  And not worth the price.
If you sit on the other side of the restaurant, the sushi is decent... again, this is another restaurant near the movie theaters... it's a place I'd go to if I were out for a movie night, but not a destination restaurant.

I was craving sushi, and this place was close, so I crossed my fingers and went for it. I sat at the bar and saw Mr. Sushi Man slicing up a massive chunk of hamachi. "That looks fresh," I said. "Just got it right now," he said. "How about we make a sashimi lunch of it?" I inquired. He hooked me up with a nice portion of both the belly (hamachi toro) and "true belly" which is translucent, buttery, and slightly addictive. Now, if I just always know when they get the fish in, I'd be a fan.

Tried out this place for the sushi today, and I can comfortably say that I've had much better.

ordered some seaweed salad and shumai for appetizers - the seaweed salad was overly seasoned and the shumai was rather bland.

I also ordered iced green tea thinking it'd be unsweetened and actually brewed... I got a bottle of sobe green tea instead. really? for a "japanese" steakhouse.

the sushi was alright, it didnt seem that fresh or well prepared. we got the caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll, las vegas roll and philly rolls among other things, but none of these stood out to me compared to the same rolls at other sushi restaurants.

oh and i've never had to pay for an extra dish of eel sauce before.

would i come back to this place? only if someone else invited me, and paid.

(based on sushi alone, not the grill)

Watching the grill was fun, always is, but the food is just average at best. The first and last time I went with my gf, the cook used way too much soy sauce, otherwise the rest of the food was decent. The service is a little slow but very tolerable. I will say though, the cook did have some good aim at fling shrimp into peoples mouths.

Hibachi Japanese Steakhouse is amazing. I love going there. And because i go there so often they know me by name. Anyways the atmoshpere is nice and relaxing and big enough for people to move around. The people are okay there, most of them speak english. When you walk in you have 3 choices. 1st choice is to sit in the hibachi table area. Good for big groups and parties, you can meet some interesting people around your table. Downside is if your table is not full you have to wait for ever until they either fill it or feel like no one else will come. There is the chef who cooks your food infront of you. The show is ok depending on who you get. Its funny and entertaining a couple times after that it gets old. 2nd choice go to the sushi bar. I feel like sushi is being forced down my throat. You can sit all tables near the sushi area. You get quicker service and faster food and they don't annoy you with the show if you have already seen it. Good food and good times.

I've been to this restaurant twice and had wonderful experiences both times.  Our guests loved the entertainment and the food and plum sake are amazing.  Don't forget to order edamame as your appetizer.  YUM!
