3 reviews for Hi Soon Yi
We have been going here for years, and love the changes. Yes, it has that slightly hole in the wall look, some very odd decor at times, but we keep coming back!
The menus now are in Korean and English, and feature pictures. If you go there enough, you will know which waitresses can explain the dishes better..(Joy is great), but they will all help you the best they can. Some of the more adventurous recommendations have turned out to be great! You will notice that most of the tables have a bubbling bowl of soon dubu soup. Delicious!
Sometimes people don't know the way in which Korean 'food is served (sides dishes, rice) and that's when some of the language barrier issues can come into play. Rest assured, your meal will come automatically with rice, and the price includes the side dishes they bring...it's fine if you don't want them or don't eat them.
I have seen many people ask for brown rice...they do not have it. You may ask for "purple rice" though, and they will gladly serve it. (Rice with beans, black rice, etc in it. Healthy, hearty and nutty tasting.)
We go there often enough, they remember our faves..they remember I like purple rice, and the rest of the family likes extra this or that. My other friends who go there often also get this treatment.
It's a wonderful, casual place. They have lunch specials, and also full dinner size meals that can easily be shared by two!
WAIT.."Hi Soon Yi" ? This restaurant name is Ho Soon Yi...don't worry, you will see it, blue roof, tiger picture on the sign. :)
When I have my cravings for korean food this place always comes to mind. They have very reasonable prices and I love their spicy tofu soup! My husband always gets their spicy bbq pork (dwaeji bulkogi), their pan fried mackeral is reallly good too! You get plenty of side dishes and rice to accompany your meal and we've always gotten nice service there. We've tried other korean restaurants in the area and this place still is number 1 in my book ;)
From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall. Once inside, however, I found it to be standing room only. It's no wonder...the food is excellent! There's Korean signs on the walls, the menu is written in Korean (with an English section), and the prices were comparable to other restaurants.
I was unaware of the serving sizes. They're more than ample. I also learned that the meals can be prepared without spices, mild, or typical 'spicy'. The server helped me learn about the varieties. It was nice.
The atmosphere is typical small restaurant - clean, cozy, and minimal.
