Hertz Rent A Car
5 reviews for Hertz Rent A Car
I'm bumping up this a star after our experience there this past week. We decided to make another trip to Hearst Castle, and decided to rent a car again. Again, thank God for AAA, and the Hertz Local Edition, because those two factors saved us $30 a day.
We arrived on a Monday morning, and there was a fairly significant line--go figure, start of the week, and people are dropping off their cars to get worked on and may need a rental. No big deal.
We got to the front of the line and Phong helped us out. He went through what we requested in our reservation, and walked us out to the back to show us what was available--in our case, a Honda Accord. He then said, "With the coupon you have, you can upgrade for $12 a day additional to a Prius." Considering the price of gas, and the amount of driving we were going to drive, we jumped on it.
Great car to drive, and now I understand why the Prius is neat and the Bay Area has a proliferation of them. We were good stewards of the earth for our trip! (pardon me while I go hug this tree.)
So, moral of the story: use that AAA membership, search for coupons, and if you can, go to the local edition--it's worth it!

The guy working there was a total sleazebag, continually trying to jack up the price, throwing around quotes and then changing them later. Yet the pricing scale was clearly some FLAT RATES showing right there on the computer screen.
Don't go to Hertz Rent A Car in Sunnyvale. Go someplace else.

The guys working here are pretty scummy and try to pull pricing tricks on you. They even played good cop bad cop on me! They tried to put me in a compact for the price of a full-size. They tried to charge me for an extra day, and it took a lot of convincing for them to see their error. I got so angry with all the gouging they were trying to do that I ended up yelling (not something I do very often). After my outburst they finally made right, but it certainly wasn't worth the stress.
They really tried hard to sell me on the optional insurance, but keep in mind that many major credit cards provide supplemental car rental insurance, and of course your regular auto insurance probably also covers rental cars.

My one and only experience here was mediocre. The whole process to rent my car took 45 minutes. I know they were busy that morning because there were tons of people waiting in line, but the workers kept going in the back and disappearing for 15 minutes before coming out to the front again to help people.
The guy who helped me initially offered me a Ford Focus, which I really didn't want to drive. He then offered me a Mazda 3, which I accepted. He pulled up the Mazda 3 to the front parking lot and I went on my way.
The only thing about my car was that it smelled like a dead animal mixed with smoke the entire time I had it. When I was returning the car, I found a really old banana peel underneath my seat. Gross.
I had a really bad experience here last Winter. We had reserved a 4-wheel SUV ONE WEEK PRIOR and were told to show up at 10AM to pick up the car. Well, when we show, they of course, had no such SUV. The front desk person did not seem apologetic, she just said "well, we have this SUV coming in half an hour, it's not 4-wheel drive, but it doesn't matter" ad nauseum.
Wow. We ended up going to Enterprise Rent-A-Car down the street, who actually had a great SUV available at a fair price (a wee bit higher than we were going to spend at Hertz anyway).
A hex on Hertz until they get their sh*t together.
