Simultaneously stimulating and relaxing - what a fun place to spend the day exploring, inside and out. Just an hour from Providence, I can't believe I'd never really heard about this place.
First, let's talk outdoors. "The living collection" of Heritage Gardens is everywhere. There is much to admire (the Cape Cod Hydrangea Garden, prized massive rhododendrons, flume fountain running through the trees and cascading in a pool surrounded by variations of lilies - with cool common names like "origami angel") but also so much to DO! A labyrinth path set in the trees, garden maze, walking paths and for me, the highlight of the whole place: Hidden Hollow. Set in a deep dip in the landscape, with great vantage points to look below (including a huge tree house!!), Hidden Hollow is a dreamy, artful nature play space for kids/families. I was vicariously 5 again watching kids use a water pump to fill galvanized pails and "cook" in the adorable woodland kitchen.
There are museums all through the grounds: a local history museum, Looff carousel to ride, folk art museum, and an incredible collection of antique cars.
I'm so impressed by how this place has evolved itself starting as a farm and a rich guy's collections of stuff to such a special, engaging place for any age to learn and enjoy nature.Listed in: Museums and Stuff

I really enjoyed my visit to this garden. It has lots of great photo opportunities, beautiful landscaping, and a picturesque flume waterfall.
They also had an incredibly interesting childrens exhibit (Hidden Hollow) with interactive activities ranging from painting to drumming to stacking logs to build structures. It was a place I would have begged to go back to as a child.
I am removing a star because there is a lot of walking up and down hills involved, and not a lot of warning about the amount of physical exertion involved in touring the garden. -

A magical place. Walking under their beautiful trees makes me feel like I'm in some kind of utopia.
I also enjoyed the auto museum very much.
The only downside is that you eventually have to leave.
Many thanks to the Lilly family for giving the public the opportunity to enjoy their collections.
The grounds of the museum are large, so grab a map.
Also, I think the cafe is only open seasonally. -

As if the Arnold Arboretum & Larz Anderson Auto Museum somehow suddenly collided, then landed on Cape Cod.
I hadn't visited since my childhood when class trips usually combined a trip to the Heritage and the nearby Fish Hatchery, a few weeks back we enjoyed the Cape Cod Scottish Games there, it is still well maintained as I remembered, nice place for photos, walks, etc. -

I don't know....having not been here since a class field trip when I was 8, I was expecting more. It was underwhelming in my opinion. Very nice grounds but nothing was in bloom yet(rhodies etc...) which isn't their fault but I think they have the wherewithal to plant different flowers to maximize bloom during the season. Indoor museums were nice but dated and other than the antique cars they would bore a child to tears. I had brought my mom who is in wheelchair thinking she would enjoy strolling around but found the place not really handicap friendly. The strolling paths are quite steep (again, not their fault, its the geography) but buildings were only partially handicap accessible and those that were looked to be done begrudgingly. Car museum was under construction and the constant buzz and dodging of landscape/maint carts and their gas exhaust on the trails were not a great plus either. Maybe we picked a bad day, but I can see why I haven't back since 3rd grade. Lars Anderson Museum in Brookline,Arnold Aborteum or many free state parks are better to be brutally honest.
