this isn't bad for he price. knowing you get what you pay for. it's old and raggedy but it's $40 bucks a night in san fran and good luck finding that elsewhere.
the breakfast is better than your average muffin and coffee. and if you ask for a smoking room you get one with a balcony and a view of the bay and the bridge.
it's a 15 minute walk to the wharf and there is great public transportation.

Oh my gosh, how do I even begin to describe this crack den of a hotel?! From the beginning, I guess...my boyfriend, his parents (who were visiting from England) and I decided to have a long weekend in SF. His parents wanted to treat us to the weekend, so they booked the hotel, and we set off on our beautiful drive up the coast.

We arrived at about 11pm - tired from the drive, and looking forward to crawling into a comfy hotel bed. We were told that there was guaranteed parking for all hotel guests, and of course, when we arrived, there was none - first strike. My boyfriend and I waited in the car, while his parents checked in. An hour later we were headed to our room. As we walked to our room, I actually said out loud "this place looks like it rents by the hour!" It was super sketchy, with weird people hanging around watching us. We get to our room, and the key doesn't work. Amazing. It is freezing out, and now we can't get in. Out of the shadows, a man in normal clothes says "your key doesn't work? I will go get someone..." As promised, a sweaty man comes running up to us and opens our door. Immediately, the smell of smoke, urine and regret hits us in the face. The lights go on, and the room looks like one from a movie - one where you die in the middle of the night. We go in, and decide that the smell is bad enough that we want to change rooms, and since our door is broken, moving rooms sounds like a good plan. The sweaty (but nice) man takes me and my boyfriend's mom down to another room around the back, which felt really sketchy. He opens the door, and quickly slams it shut, nervously saying "this one isn't ready for you. We will have to move you tomorrow." As soon as he left, I said "there is probably a dead prostitute on the bed..." I was only half joking.

We return to our stinky room, and just decide to deal for the night. I seriously didn't want to touch anything. I went into the gross bathroom, and lifted up the toilet seat, only to find poop in it. Lovely. Needless to say, I held it. We all quickly got changed, ripped the nasty bedspread off the bed, and got in. A few minutes into it, I look over to the other bed, and notice what seemed like an ant crawling on my boyfriend's dad'd pillow, nearing his head. I say something about it, and he pops up to look, and kill it. No joke, I think all its friends came to the funeral. Almost immediately, there were bugs everywhere. Bedbugs. BEDBUGS!!! WTF?! I took pics and video, it was so bad. There was also blood on the sheets.

We all jump up, and decide that something needs to be done immediately, since we are here for 3 nights at a non-refundable rate. I immediately try to get on the "complimentary" internet to find another hotel, but surprise, surprise, it doesn't work! It is now after 1am. My bf's dad goes down to handle everything, and i get on my cell to get us a new hotel. Turns out, every single hotel is booked up solid for the whole weekend, and we were not getting out of this. As dad came back, we noticed that our window was opened, and could be opened from the outside of the room. Safe. Get me the hell out of here.

Dad tells us that they are upgrading us to a suite, but it only has one king bed, and a single pullout couch bed. He also mentions that it didn't seem like they were surprised to hear our complaints at the desk. Whatever, as long as its clean. The key doesn't work again, so this time, they give us the master key. THE MASTER KEY!!! We could get into any room with it. Scary.

We check the entire room, no bugs in sight, and a new matress. The pullout couch is a joke, and is completely caved in. Three slept in the bed, and I slept on the small L-shaped couch, with a sheet over it so that I had no direct contact with the fabric of the couch. The next morning, we were switched yet again to the 2nd floor to the nicest room yet, which isn't saying much. The Cowhill Suite. 2 king beds, larger, and cleaner. We remain in this room the rest of the time, but spend as little time in the room as possible, and keep our valuables on us (in case others have the master key also!)

I would comment on the breakfast, but I would never even step foot in that room, let alone eat the food they offer. As we checked out, and walked to our car, something else amazing happened...there were 2 cop cars parked right behind our car - one was a regular cop car, and the other was an undercover car. The 2 undercover cops were walking two young guys with handcuffs on, out of our lovely hotel. They put them in the cop car, and the undercovers went back in. As they did, I said to them "this is the gnarliest hotel I have ever been in", and they said "that's why we're here..."

Par for the course. Do not stay here.

This is the worst place I have ever seen. We checked into this place on Wednesday Oct 21 and was not even in the room for an hour before we left and found a different place to stay. It smelled, it stank horribly. We were afraid to sit on the bed or even stay in the room because we thought we would stink ourselves. The floor was sticky, paint was peeling off the walls, only 2 towels, the cobwebs on the ceiling was so thick that if there was a fire the water couldn't have come out of the sprinkler. The whole place was awful... the hallways were dirty and smelled awful as well. They may have free parking but take it from me, pay the extra amount and go to a better place.
We ended up staying at The Radisson on Fisherman's Wharf which we were very satisfied with!

I don't even know where to start with this place. My sister and her boyfriend decided to take a road trip to the Cal USC game... While there we had to visit our cousin and her best friend. My cousin surprised us with booking a hotel room so we could party in SF for the night. We were so stoked pre-drink than hit a night out on the town. Well we get to the hotel. No parking then as we are looking for parking I got to see a hooker with her ass out... then I decided since I was going to drive I would stay in for the night. As I am sleeping a big crawled across my face. I unfortunately have had to stay in some crappy hotels but this really took the cake, the frosting and the sprinkles. Anyways I moved rooms and the next morning more bugs. How this place is allowed to be in business I do not know. They lure you with a website called /http://www.lastminutet... and because it's located on Van Ness. You think you are getting a decent hotel they are rated 3 stars how I really don't know. I would have rather slept in the car but I didn't want a hooker for company. I now have a rash on the left side of my arm... Needless to say my road trips to NorCal will not happen for awhile and when it does I will make sure other arrangements are made... I wish I would have looked at the reviews before I agreed to stay in San Fran for the night... DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!

I was here with Vera T.

BUGS BUGS BUGS.

got to this poor excuse for a hotel/inn/motel around 2am. Early morning, I was woken up by Vera T. and her boyfriend making a ruckus in the bed next to us. Couple hours later, she wakes up her brother (my boyfriend) and says something to him in Chinese (which i didn't understand since I'm Korean lol)

Wasn't until we woke up from our slumber and I saw just some dirt and some PUBIC HAIRS in our bed underneath the pillows (and no it wasn't from US lol). Didn't think much of it til I saw a bug amongst our white sheets. I sprung out of bed and looked around the blanket and sheets a bit more and found MORE of those suckers.

Then I looked on Vera T.'s bed and saw MANY MANY MANY bugs. I don't know what they were, but I think they were TICKS. I spotted some red dots due to Vera T. and her fiance SQUISHING them in their sleep.

DISGUSTING. How could you possibly let this happen?!

Oh and like Vera T. said, the toilet was broken. I heard her and the fiance trying to fix it in the morning. lol...

The bathroom reminded me of those Chinese egg custard tarts...

DISGUSTING place to stay in.

I stayed at this hotel back in 2005 when I was in San Francisco for a weekend and wanted someplace inexpensive but clean and with a lock on the door - close to other areas.

At the time the hotel was a little run-down, but I had a great view of the GG Bridge from my window and my friend and I felt safe.

I went back to SFO this weekend with another friend and ended up choosing this hotel due to the price, the free (they say "guaranteed" on one part of their site and then don't guarantee on another) parking, and the fact that we would only be in the room to sleep at night. According to the website the hotel had been "recently renovated" so I went in with high hopes.

Before we even made the reservation my friend e-mailed the hotel about parking, with no response. After the res was made I e-mailed to let them know we'd be arriving late - again, no response (I ended up having to call them on the way down).

Rather than go into an entire novel, I'll sum up the good and bad points:

GOOD:
Inexpensive (but remember, you get what you pay for)
Walking distance to Ghirardelli Square / Wharf Area
Nice views if you get a room facing the street
Room was warm

BAD:
Noisy - last night there the people above us did not sleep - they walked around so much we wondered if they were dealing drugs or something
Elevator is small and very noisy - we could hear every movement from our room
Noisy
Contintental breakfast was extremely basic
Had to ask housekeeping staff for additional towels and washcloths - which they did leave - but then took away the net day (?!)
Large stains on the carpet
Did I mention noisy?
Internet service did not work
Parking lot is limited and if you have a larger car - very hard to get into/out of certain spaces

If you can sleep through an atomic blast and don't care about little luxuries, then this place may work for you. However, it seems its bad points outweigh the good.

Spend a little more money elsewhere.  We booked this place and they messed up the reservation and we didn't have a room!  No apology and it wasn't until I called three times to complain they offered us a free night.

When we got there, the tv remote had no batteries in it - and no batteries could be put in it cuz the wiring was ripped out.  The place was clean but smelled strongly of mothballs.  Which I don't mind that much, but the shower had no shower head.  Just a faucet sticking out of the wall 5 feet from the ground.  I decided against the shower.

Front desk guy at night is rude.  Place is in an ok neighborhood.  Probably a good place if you aren't going to do anything but sleep.  You can shower but you probably wouldn't like it.  I suggest maybe trying the Holiday Inn down the street.

I wouldn't return here -- "tired" is really the perfect word to describe this place. Tired and stingy.  But the most important thing to realize about this place?  THIS IS A HOTEL FOR PEOPLE TRAVELING WITH A CAR -- it's  not in a pedestrian friendly neighborhood.  It's not near any of the interesting sites, nor the bart. This place is really designed for people travelling with cars and I wish we had realized that before we picked it for our stay last march.  Thanks to the kindness of some locals, we were lucky enough to discover the marina district about a 15 min walk away where we found some awesome brunch places.

Anyway, i wouldn't come back here.

"Vintage" and "tired" are understatements for this place. The pictures available for this hotel on travel websites are VERY misleading. The main lobby looks recently renovated with its marble counter and tile floors, but any touch of modernity goes only that far.

But first, THE GOOD:
- Free parking for guests--although limited.
- Continental breakfast is available (I didn't stay long enough to see if it was any good).
- It is on a main path in the public transportation system.
- It is close to Fisherman's Wharf, the Exploratorium, Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and Golden Gate Park
- Cheap price

THE BAD:
I had reserved three nights at this place. Almost as soon as I checked in, I checked out of the so-called hotel.

Getting to my room was confusing and SCARY. There were many dark corners, the hallways were poorly lit, the floors were uneven (I felt like I could topple over the balcony if I lost balance while walking to my room), and the stairs and elevator were difficult to find. I remember thinking, "If I get shot right now, how long will it take for somebody to find my body."

The doors to all the rooms looked like they were bought second-hand. They had scratches and discolorations. Many doors had holes bored into them and patched with poorly installed peep holes. However, it looked like the owner ran out of money for those because my door in particular was simply patched shut.

The seats in my room had stains all over them--as did my shower floor. The carpet smelled like 3-yrs worth of dust bunnies had accumulated on it. Have you ever vacuumed before without realizing that you need to replace the dirt bag, so the vacuum ends up circulating the dust instead of picking it up, and afterwards there's this metallic smell in the air? That's how it smelled in my room mixed with cigarette smoke (even though it was a non-smoking room). Of course, since my room's heater didn't work, I was too busy freezing my butt off to notice the smell that much.

I called Expedia soon after I checked in to inquire about getting a refund for two of my three nights. Unfortunately, I had arrived at 10pm after driving from LA. I was too tired to find some place else to sleep the first evening. Otherwise, I would have insisted on a full refund. I crashed at a friend's place for the rest of my weekend.

If you would like to reenact a scene from Escape from New York this is the place to do it.

I used to stay here due to its parking and location, but this place its straight janky. We were locked out of our room @ 2:30am (their fault) and it took 3 phone calls and 25 mins for anyone to show up.

Many of the rooms look like crime scenes. Indeed many of these rooms ARE crime scenes.

This place is tanking faster than the economy.

Pay a few bucks more elsewhere, you'll be happy.

This hotel is exceptional for its price. I was impressed by many things, such as: the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from our third floor room, the quality of service provided by hotel employees, the simple yet filling continental breakfast, and the close proximity to multiple muni stops and "tourist destinations."

Before staying here, I was skeptical due to the unfortunate reviews. However, I am pleased to report that I found none of them to be true for my three day experience. I would certainly recommend this hotel to any inquiring friend or family member.

$39 a night in such a city as San Francisco would ordinarily mean DUMP. However, after staying at the Heritage Marina, I feel that there is hope for cheap rates AND quality.

All I have to say is GROSS GROSS GROSS!!!!!   DON'T STAY HERE.  We didn't want to drive home after partying in the city so we decided to rent a cheap room to spend the night.  Boy are we not going to do that again.  We actually had reservation at the Broadway Manor Inn (BMI), but some how they were over booked for the night.  So they sent us over to the Heritage Marina Hotel (HMH).

When we got to the HMH, the guy at the front desk was nice, but seemed a bit shady.  He was able to get us a room because the gal at BMI had called ahead and made a deal with him.  As he was checking us in, they turned a group of people away that actually had reservations  (just like what BMI did to us).  So I thought that was very strange.  How can these hotel operate like that.

Any how, when we got to our room, the maids were still cleaning, but we were in such a rush to get to our dinner reservation we just dropped off our bags and left.

When we got back to our room at 2am, it smelled like heavy duty clean supply and I was thinking, "At least they clean the place."

That night the toilet was leaking, not because we clogged it, but the pluming in tank was broken and water was spewing from the top and around the toilet flusher.  We had to catch the water with the garbage can.  We were finally able to fix it ourselves.  (I have to mention that had a very ugly yolk colored tub and toilet)

Any how, this wasn't the best part.  We woke up in the morning and I pointed out to my finance that there was a bug crawling on the wall and he told me not to look so closely.  Then he noticed that there was a fuzz on the sheet and he tried to pick it up, but it started moving.  We both freaked out and jumped out of bed.  We looked more closely and we found MANY creepy crawlers in the bed.  There were also blood stains on the sheets where we apparently squashed some of them in our sleep.  We then looked around the room and there were bugs everywhere.  Bed sheet, mattress, box spring, walls, curtains, etc.

We went downstairs to tell the lady at the front desk that there were bugs all over the bed and all over the room.  She basically was aware of the situation and tried to avoid any conversation about the bugs.  She offered us a free room for the future or anyone we want and we said NO THANK YOU.

I still have chills thinking about it.

this place is a hot mess...and by hot mess i mean it's a dump

i decided last minute to stop for a night in san francisco on my way down from portland...being a former carless resident of the city, i'm well aware of it's ins and outs and where to go and where not to go..location wise, it's not in a bad spot..it's walking distance to the marina and since you're on a main street, van ness, there are plenty of bus lines around to take you to all the touristy spots..if you do have a car, this place has parking but limited parking and when i came this place was full and i barely found a spot. if you have a large car, good luck navigating it through the parking lots.

we arrived rather late but there are people at the desk all the time..the ones we encountered were friendly..however, there was one that seemed like he was tweaked and/or coked out and seemed odd..whatever..turns out, the guy who checked us in informed us that the magnetic key cards for our room most likely would not work and asked if we had planned on going out for the evening...since we arrived closed to midnight and i had been driving 11hrs i said that we were going out because i had a lot of drinking to do. so, he had to walk us up to our room, open the door and told us to just tell the front desk person to come open it up for us again when we returned..obnoxious

the room was alright..nothing fancy...this place is far from vintage..it was dingy as everyone else wrote and it's outdated..OUTDATED not vintage..it's in dire need of a massive remodel..the only good thing was the view we had from our window..if it wasn't a hazy morning it would have been a perfect picture of the golden gate bridge and the pacific heights neighborhood in the distance.

other than all that, we had a hell of a time navigating through the stairwells to get to the top floor..they have a pool and i saw one person in it but really, outdoor pools in SF are usually unnecessary since it rarely gets hot enough....we didn't get up early for the continental breakfast so i couldn't tell you what that was.

i probably wouldn't stay here again...only if it as the cheapest place to stay and the only place available..which is why we stayed there in the first place.

i booked this hotel for $39/night for the thanksgiving weekend.
at that price i was just hoping there were 4 walls, a locking door, and heat.  and that's what i got--plus a fully functioning tv with cable.
if you are looking for anything resembling luxury, look elsewhere.
if you are looking for a place to sleep between outings gallivanting around the city, a place that is in a safe location and is better than sleeping in yr car, then this is it.
take note: there is free parking, but despite what their website says, it is NOT guaranteed.  this was very unnerving to discover at 1am.  they just don't have enough spaces for every room on premises, and they aren't very apologetic about it.  found street parking, but we had to be up by 10 to move the car.

I am a little torn on this review.  I have learned that you get what you pay for in this world, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.  This place is a 50/50 proposition.  Good Prices, Free parking, free continental breakfast.  The best thing they had was Little Joe's.  They lost that when he closed.  The free parking and cheap rates might help, but the place is tired and needs to be revamped.  The front desk personnel really need to start cutting their medication in half, but the maid staff is very attentive.  The Pool was kept clean, and the breakfast was always fresh.  They would do better with a full service restaurant, but they stated they were now going to use that space (Little Joe's) for the breakfasts.  Don't expect the Plaza, and you will be alright.

If you are traveling or wanting to stay in SF for great affordable rates, this is it! The prices are as low as $93-WITH FREE PARKING! It's in a great location of SF-and yes there are pretty good views if you can catch them. The rooms were ok and clean-the only small small thing I would have to say is that my AC/heater didn't work, but it wasn't a big deal at all. It's not a fancy hotel, but it's got everything you need, especially if you are planning on not spending too much time in the room-low price, free parking, great location-all you need. I am staying here all the time!

Not 15 minutes after I had checked in to the Heritage Marina Hotel, I informed the hooded-sweatshirt wearing front desk attendant that we would not be staying there and I wanted my money back.

The hotel's website was entirely misleading and displayed pictures of nice, clean, and safe hotel.  There was supposedly "guaranteed parking" for guests which also turned out to be incorrect.

We were assigned a room on the 5th floor and since none of the elevators appeared safe or operational we were forced to take the stairs with all of our bags.  The dimly lit, urine-soaked stairway had shady, drugged up, sick looking locals in cutoff leather jackets and jean short-shorts hanging out smoking cigarettes around every turn.  Needless to say, my girlfriend was worried that we would either be mugged or have a needle jammed into our leg as we shuffled by, burdened by all of our bags.  They were looking at us like we were fresh meat.  Let's just say that lucky for us, I had taken appropriate preparations so that we WOULD NOT become victims....

The fifth floor looked typical of innercity public housing from the seventies.  The doors of each room were all of a different makeup and had been haphazardly hung on their hinges  There were more junkies hanging out on our floor in the hallway.  After trying the key in our door several times without success my girlfriend had had enough and decided that we weren't staying there.

We stopped at our friends room on the way back down just to see what we were missing.  More people hanging out in the hallway, offering their opinion.  It was the kind of room where you wouldn't want to take your shoes off in.  The bathroom door had a hole in it where somebody had smashed their fist through.  No toilet paper.  Yellow toilet and bathtub from the seventies. No wireless connection. All of the rooms balconies were connected, a disconcerting thought given the amount of tranny prostitutes (I counted at least three) walking up and down from room to room strutting their stuff.

We checked out (I was ready to cancel payment if I didn't get a full refund,)  and went across the street to the Comfort Inn and payed twice as much for a nice clean room.  The Heritage Marina Hotel needs to be condemned as a hazard to the publics welfare.  Frankly, I'm shocked it didn't charge for rooms by the hour.

My boyfriend and I stayed here recently, and we really think it's underrated... Yes, it's cheap, but it's got this great vintage feel to it... And they have a great complimentary breakfast... And their restaurant, Little Joe's is really cute and very homestyle... Their rooms are really nice, and are pretty large... And very clean...  If you're looking for a safe, quiet, and pretty nice hotel in SF for a few nights, check this place out for sure!
