Aaw hereandnow.

I have many fond memories from touring with the troupe back in 1998 to 2000.

Wow. Makes me feel so old seeing that it was 10 years ago now!

hereandnow theatre company is mostly Asian American theatre troupe that has spawned a sister company, Teatro Nueva Alma, and is itself also multicultural and multiracial.  They've toured a couple of hundred different colleges, and create most of the shows from their own collective voices, occasionally producing full-length works like ROMEO AND JULIET PINOY/PINAY STYLE, fentor, and A NICKEL'S WORTH, among others.  Full disclosure:  I did fentor with them about ten or twelve years ago, so I'm not completely unbiased - I've got a soft spot in my heart for these guys.

But I also just love the kind of theatre they do.  They've got a couple of different shows running at the Armory Northwest in South Pasadena until the beginning of September, and we saw their NEW TRADITIONS last night - a series of vignettes created by the members of the company, expressing artistic director John Miyasaki's credo:  "Everybody's got a story to tell."

I love that, and the stories the told last night were like little gems, short stories that were windows into the souls of the characters and the actors.  I also love the KIND of theatre they do:  Spare.  A mostly empty stage plus the actors plus lights plus sound and music.  Simple.  Direct.  Moving.

Check 'em out before the end of August, or look for their shows whenever you can.
