    Situation
    - Dinner on a Saturday night with friends
    - Ordered Green Papaya Salad as an appetizer
    - Split an order of Gnocchi and a Grilled Seitan Shawarma
    - Ordered the Vegan German Chocolate Cake

    Pros
    - The Papaya Salad, it's not really a true salad as it's all noodles, but it is spicy and good.
    - The Gnocchi was delicious, but the portion size was a bit small
    - The Chocolate Cake is really good
    - They take credit cards
    - Service

    Cons
    - Grilled Seitan Shawarma, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't as good as the rest of the food

    Watch out everyone!
Don't let them 'green-wash' you because this place is about as fresh as frost-bite.
I let myself endure about a 1/10th of a soggy, halfcooked Portobello mushroom burger before I had to throw in the towel.

Really... how hard it is to cook a mushroom?

Every aspect of it was ill-prepared and awful..
actually 'soggy' would be a more appropriate adjective to describe my experience.
This place just oozes disappointment, and is simply inedible.

Food was brilliant. They got everything spot on and the flavors were great. We had the gnocchi and a hummus wrap. The service though was real bad. She couldn't even look at us or smile right, but was simply sloppy. Wish I could be nice but if you are looking for a quick lunch fix without bothering to sit and enjoy then go ahead and come here or else bring your friends somewhere else.

Herbivore food is what it is. The place is clean, neat and right in the middle of Mission.

I have patronized Herbivore between this location and the one in Berkeley, and I have yet to find any sort of dislike towards this restaurant. What I love most is the fact that they don't lack in plentitude of diversity on their menu. For example, satiating your hunger pangs for a plate of Thai or Armenian dishes can be taken care of here!

On top of proudly owning a heavily diversified menu, Herbivore also holds the bragging rights to supporting local farms, vegan breweries, and using organic produce when available. I'm all for these things, so I'd love to give a huge vegan ego-stroke and SF street-credibility to you guys.

So here's what "Jaye's stamp of approval" thus far:

    - sautéed mushroom with crostini: not too heavy on the sauce, perfect as an appetizer spilt between two people ($6)

    - ravioli w/ basil pesto & garlic bread: delectable and light, a great combination for those who prefer not to overload on creamy foods. Since it's off the  entree section of the menu, it comes with a side salad tossed in dijon mustard dressing. ($11)

    - curry coconut udon noodles: you have no idea how in love I am with any curry dish, and this one is quite consistent in flavor, so a huge thumbs up for that. ($8.50)

    - bbq seitan sandwich: basic sandwich, comes with a side of seasoned & straight cut potatoes & salad with dijon dressing ($9.50)

    - Indonesian noodle salad: has rice noodles, tofu, cucumbers, pineapple, orange, sprouts, red cabbage, sautéed oyster mushrooms, etc, you have a choice between tamarind or peanut dressing, I recommend tamarind! ($8)

The only trivial downside is the size of huge plates to amount of table space provided needs to be fixed.

Inspired menu. We started off sharing bruschetta, followed by Indonesian noodle salad: rice noodle, tofu, cucumbers, pineapple, orange, sprouts, mint, cilantro, red cabbage, onion, satuéed oyster mushrooms, and ginger. We chose tamarind dressing.

The newest Herbivore location opened in Berkeley shortly before I graduated / moved. Imagine my surprise when I moved to SF and learned there was a location nearby that had existed longer than the Berkeley location...

Coming here after years of curiosity could have been disappointing, but I was pleased by my dining experience at Herbivore. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice, and the back patio is particularly pleasant on a nice day. This place is veggie / vegan, and I'm not. But the selection of food and beverages doesn't feel lacking, and the "meat" is good enough for me!

Service is good here, and this is one of the restaurants you can go to on Valencia where you DON'T feel like you're getting the hole in the wall experience - but for a reasonable price. Sometimes classy, full service is what you want, and this is what you get at Herbivore Valencia. Vegetarian style.

I appreciate a casual spot on Valencia that offers good wraps and salads.  We had tacos to start, and our mains were the kale salad and falafel wrap.  Loved the tacos!  The salad though was a little bland and the wrap was good, but nothing special.

I'm sure we'll go back when we want to get more veggies in our diet.

Went here for lunch today. I had the BBQ Sandwich which was ok but the grilled potatoes where not very good. They were rubbery and coated in way to much oil.

It is such a shame that this $12 lunch was not worth the money I spent.

Haven't reviewed this place in years, and it's time for an update. The Herbivore I patronized some 15 years ago(?) is back. I now happily go here frequently for brunch. Service and food have been good. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the physical environment isn't super comfy. Recommend for brunch without hesitation!

OMG!  Why is the average rating a 3-star?!?!  Maybe I came in on the perfect night!  I came here with my best friend and we had an AMAZING time.  This is what we ordered:

    Starters:
Brushetta (is that how u spell it?)
    Crisp Tacos

    Dinner:
We shared the penne pasta with a creamy lemon herb sauce; we also each got a glass of sparkling wine, which went well with the food.

    Dessert:
German chocolate cake with a side of vanilla bean ice cream
I got the Arabic mint tea to accompany my cake, and my friend got the latte.

Ok, seriously....EVERYTHING was amazing.  We did not leave any crumbs behind and my friend is super picky!!  The entree portions are very decent!  My friend wanted to share the entree and at first I was thinking..."um, hello??  girl, I can eat!"  But, it turned out to be perfect...especially since we also had appetizers, which by the way were amazing!!  The crisp tacos were delicious!!  The German chocolate cake---um this was literally the best chocolate cake I ever had, I couldn't believe that it was vegan!!

I am NOT a vegetarian...so for me to have enjoyed this food so much was surprising!!  I was stuffed!!  And it is not pricey at all, our total came out to be about $55.00 (not including tip).  Oh yeah, and our waitress, Jessie, was such a delight!!  She was super friendly and so accommodating, the excellent service was the cherry on top for me!  I am definitely coming back!!

What's with the hating in the star rating?Herbivore has great food and tons of options. Their green salad with soy chicken and dijon dressing is delicious, their carrot cake is amazing, and their orange soy chicken with rice and veggies is droll worthy. If you like vegan fare, or are just looking for a healthy meal, this is the place to go.

After a chilly Sunday in the park, all I could think of was how much I wanted a big bowl of hot soup. And because of the way life works, sometimes it's impossible to find a simple bowl of soup when that's the one thing in life you want. That's how I ended up at Herbivore though I'm not a vegan and wasn't particularly craving vegan eats. I appreciated that there was no wait to sit on a Sunday evening, and I really enjoyed our waitress, who was very friendly and helpful - excellent service!

As for the food itself, I wasn't too impressed. I got the sweet and sour soup with rice noodles and though I liked the hot broth warming my belly, I wasn't too excited about the flavors or the texture of the noodles. One of my friends got the special soup of the evening, a creamy zucchini, which she was a bit disappointed by, and the other got the almond starter, which really was a handful of nuts with a couple of slices of lime placed on top.

I feel bad giving it a three star rating as nothing was really over the top bad, but I guess in an area where there is so much selection I expected something a bit more special. I have to say the desserts on display looked impressive - huge cakes and cookies that made me wish I had saved some room.

The saving grace of this place for me was the great service but other than that I'm not sure I'd choose to stop by again.

Lunch with a side of breakfast.

Or perhaps it was the other way around. Either way the highlight was the excellent soy chicken burrito. Vegan sour cream. Guacamole. Beans. Wheat tortilla. Big enough for two meals.

House veggie burger was OK. Nothing memorable. Oatmeal was better. The hints of grilled banana throughout were a delicious move.

Our waitress was very friendly accommodating. Warm weather and back patio dining made the meal feel a bit like a vacation.

You can't go wrong with al fresco burritos.

I must say, I am SHOCKED at all the so-so reviews!  I walked in, asked the first server I saw if I could seat myself and she said yes!  From that point forward she was VERY friendly and even helped me pick out my meal!  I agree there is a large menu and it can be overwhelming... however, I have become somewhat of a foodie and figure the people working there are the experts and 95% of the time they steer me in the right direction.  This was once again the case here.  I had the bbq chicken sandwich with potatoes and salad.  The salad had a lot of flavor, the potato/fries were naughty but good :) and the sandwich was probably one of the best vegetarian sandwiches I have ever had.

I don't give out 5 stars easy... but this was one of the best vegetarian meals I have had and it was like 10 bucks.   Sorry everyone else had a poor experience, but I had a great one!

I go for the Green Drink (add kale) and the kale salad.

The shwarmas are great as well as the basic rice, beans and avo option on menu. The fried rice is also yummy. I don't know what they use to season their seitan, but it is AMAZING. I recommend getting a side of it with anything.

Service is usually pretty good here. There are a few servers that have been there for at least the past year and they are very sweet and extremely attentive. I try to get in here for the yumminess at least once every few weeks.

This place might be scary for someone who eats meat at every meal though.

This place was great! I went with a meat eater and even he loved it. The waitress I wish I remember her name. She was so helpful and so kind. Everything she suggested was so bomb. I would go back there again, and soon. I had the ravioli with the basil, pesto sauce. It was heaven on a plate. He had a huge breakfast burrito. We split the spring rolls. It was a very pleasant food experience. Any vegan would love it here, and the meat eaters will also leave satisfied.

PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE DIVIS LOCATION:

OK, now...with such high hopes and born again vegan, I just moved to SF from Seattle last week. I went to Herbivore with the menu memorized and oh so excited, only,....TO BE LET DOWN COMPLETELY.

I approached the counter and the cooks kindly greeted me and asked what I wanted. I proceeded to order the portobello mushroom sandwich + corn on the cob + parsley (and a bunch of other things) drink. As the cook was noting what I wanted, the server arrived.

She printed my order, which was taken wrong and totaled $27. For lunch, that's too steep and there were add ons that miscommunicated from the cook due to a language barrier. The server proceeded to comment on the Latino cooks and wait staff in a very demeaning way, "that's why they shouldn't be taking orders."She then got my order, rung it up and told them it was "to go." As I'd never been here before, I didn't know it was seat yourself and pay later. She didn't greet me with a "hello, how is your day going?" or anything of the sort.

As I found a seat, she brought the condiments my way, still with no interaction or conversation. I asked another waiter if she was the manager and unfortunately she didn't speak much English either. The "unprofessional and unfriendly" waitress asked her coworker what I asked and when she said I was looking for a manager, she said "ok." All in all, I rushed to eat my food to get out of there, while everyone else was greeted with smiles and conversation.

I approached her and gave feedback and she responded with apologies over and over But by that time, I didn't care and will never be back nor recommend this place to anyone.

    So, so disappointed.

The idea of vegan and mostly organic food at an affordable price is awesome, and the food totally delivers.  I ordered the lentil loaf and it did not disappoint.

Our server, however, did, and thoroughly.  I am usually patient.  But I do find it annoying when it takes 20 minutes to get a bottle of Orangina (which, incidentally, came out after half of my food).  The other half of my food arrived, and I was never checked up on again, except to deliver a premature check before asking whether or not I needed a refill or cared for dessert (both of which I did, in fact, want).  When I finally did get the opportunity to ask for a dessert menu, it came out 10 minutes later. It would have made sense to clear my plate then, but the dishes weren't cleared until the German Chocolate Cake (which should be named "vegan chocolate heaven") arrived.

    Food: Awesome!
Service: Epic Fail.  Which is a shame because this place could have such a good thing going...

I stopped into herbivores after some Sunday afternoon shopping on Valencia. It was about half full and I got a good table against the wall. Te service was really fast and attentive.

I ordered a vegan burrito with jalapeños. I thought it was really good and I do get a little annoyed with burritos in the whole wheat tortillas (they get soggy or the don't bend right, ya know what I mean?). But other than that I was fairly happy with the meal.

It was cheap around $10. I didn't get anything to drink but they looked to have a good beer and smoothies selection.

So. If I had recently become a vegetarian and this was the first place I went to, I would go back to being an omnivore (maybe even a carnivore) faster than you can say "tofurkey"

When my friend and I first entered around 7:00 pm, all the tables were pretty much empty. That should've been a sign for us right then and there to seek another place to eat.

After looking over the menu, I decided on the half sandwich & soup combo for $7.95! I chose the coconut noodle soup and the grilled eggplant/pesto/sundried tomato sandwich. My friend got the mac & "cheese."
The food was OK. I quite enjoyed my sandwich, but the soup...eh...not so much. The broth didn't have a good taste, very sour :P It was supposed to be spicy (there was a chili pepper next to it on the menu), but it wasn't AT ALL. Good for me since I don't like spicy, but my friend had to ask for a bottle of hot sauce. My friend's mac & "cheese" was a little on the salty side and it was in a watery "broth." Um...since when is mac & cheese/"cheese" like that?? Since a dinner at Herbivore I guess.

The service was mediocre. Our waitress was talking to another out on the floor about personal stuff o.O

I don't know if I'd come back here. Maybe for the dessert because the little kid next to us was celebrating his birthday and he got a pretty sweet looking carrot cake.

I am not a vegetarian, but after eating here I realized I could be.

The menu is gigantic, with everything from sandwiches to curries to pasta.  I had the curry-coconut udon noodles with tofu.  The portions were generous, the food was hot, and I didn't miss the meat at all.

My gf had a salad with soy chicken.  I've tasted soy meat before, but this fake chicken was off the hook.  Perhaps even better than the real thing.

Plus, when I had a complaint later on, they were proactive in responding.

    All in all, great place.

Note to self: next time I want to take my girlfriend out for a drink and a piece of cake. Stay home, rather than go to this place.

We ordered two champagne cocktails (i think) which were great! It was all downhill from there. Who wants cake after a day of shopping? I DO I DO! So we ordered Carrot Cake which was AMAZING and a chocolate cupcake WHICH SUCKED WORSE THEN ANY CUPCAKE HAS EVER SUCKED IN THE HISTORY OF ALL CUPCAKES.

Being the nice person that I am, I asked the waitress about why it tasted like crap and could we have it removed from the menu. I got brushed off, while being told that they keep them in the fridge. FU LADY. NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN.

I am not a vegan and after eating here (forced of course by a friend who is) I realize that I could never be.

The food is generally sad. The tempeh is blah. The seitan is ugh. Everything was drowning in sauces. The noodles were squishy.

The service is okay but the prices are gasp! Definitely this is not where the poor vegans should come to eat.

I haven't yelped in a long time...a bit rusty on this whole experience.

I walked into Herbivore because I wanted a healthy alternative given all the crap I've been eating lately. The menu was fairly underwhelming; nothing out of the ordinary. My bf and I ordered the Coconut Curry Udon and the Indonesian Noodle Salad, and a vegan beer each. The salad was actually pretty good; I would recommend it. Fresh lettuce, bean sprouts, tofu, good peanut sauce.  The udon though...eesh. I know my udon and that was definitely NOT udon; it was more like linguini masquerading as japanese noodles under a slosh of curry sauce. Again, just a meh food experience.

What bothered me the most was the lack of knowledge from the waitstaff. As a specialty restaurant, the waitstaff should know their menu. That is a must. I had a question about why the beer was labeled vegan (good q, right? i didn't think beer was brewed with steak...??) and she had no idea. instead, she fell back on the "i'm new here" routine and gave some bs answer. of course, i googled it right after to find that honey is considered an animal problem. as is gelatin. and the coloring of beer? comes from insects.

anyway, I DIGRESS. back to my herbivore experience. to add insult to injury, the chopsticks we were given had some major typos and grammatical errors. this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, especially because it's hard to tell if they are being racist, ignorant, stupid, or just cheap in buying chopsticks from producers who also make pirated dvds.

in conclusion, i don't know how this place can last, except for the fact that as consumers, we barely ask questions about our food. we just assume that something is healthy because they told us it was. This place is NOT that healthy, peeps. and the staff needs some extra training foreals.

Dang it! As vegetarians, we really WANTED to like this place. We were actually headed to a different restaurant, but got pulled in by their appealing looking menu. Sadly, the appeal stopped there. We ordered a corn on the cob to start. It was pretty flavorless. Almost tasted like frozen corn poorly cooked to bring it back to life. For our entrees we had an Indonesian salad and the kung pow tofu dish. Just as the corn, both dishes were seriously lacking any flavor. We ended up getting everything to go and feeding a homeless person after. Irony was that he already had another box from the same restaurant that he was chowing down on. Only positive thing I can say was that their banana blueberry shake was decent. Don't bother with the smoothie (as I ended up with chunks of seed in it...ick).

After eating at Herbivore fairly regularly for several months, I had a significantly negative experience during dinner last night.  When I ordered my usual dish, I was informed it is in fact NOT GF, because it contains soy sauce.  Our waitress explained Herbivore uses GF soy sauce, but inconsistently, so that it is never clear whether dishes with soy sauce are actually GF.

Every time I place an order here, I double-check to make sure the recipe hasn't changed and the dish remains GF.  While I understand many restaurant employees do not understand what gluten is and is not, usually they do not assure me with confidence that my dish is GF.  In this restaurant, every time I ordered this dish, I was assured it was safe.

This restaurant is a vegan establishment, so they serve people who are used to having difficulty finding food that is consistent with their diet.  I am disappointed that they would disregard others' dietary concerns so carelessly.

Those of you with food allergies, I would urge you to think twice before you eat at Herbivore.

I really needed to update this review to let folks know that the Portobello Sandwich is possibly the best thing on the menu.

the coconut noodle soup is not.

    That is all.

Herbivore is like the Cheesecake factory for vegans. The menu is so large and so diverse, it's hard to pick. There are sandwiches, burgers, pastas and burritos, so matter what your vegan heart desires, you can have it.

I've yet to see this place ever fully packed, which can be a nice thing. I've found that after yoga, when I want something delicious yet not fried, I can come here for a semi-guilt free meal. My personal favorite is the marinated tofu sandwich, topped with dijon mustard and "veganaise." (Hint: Nayonaise, which is on the menu, is the same thing.)

The one miss I had was the bruschetta, which tasted a bit bland. However, carby appetizers redeemed themselves with their toasted pesto bread, topped with tons of sun-dried tomatoes.

This place isn't Cafe Millennium, but it's a wonderful vegan option in the hood, and perfect for the post-yoga workout.

What happened to the Herbivore I used to frequent and love so much?

    It is not the same.
Not sure if there is new management or what is happening.

Menu is the same, food does not taste the same at all. We usually stay for dessert but did not this time around.

Server was attentive, but not personable at all, basically did her job and that was it, no interaction other than taking our order and bringing the check.

Not sure if I will be back, very disappointed this last time.

One plus....the lemonade is still the same, super tart with pulp; just the way I like it.

I got the eggplant and sundried tomato sandwich to go. The service was excellent and the food was great, I recommend it to anyone who is interested in becoming vegetarian or vegan, this will win you over.

I really want to love Herbivore.  The first time I visited a few years ago I came for brunch and my dish was so great I could feel my body thanking me for eating such delicious and healthy food.  A few weeks ago my husband and I returned for dinner and I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed.  Perhaps my expectations were too high on account of my first visit being so fantastic.

I had the grilled portobello over creamy polenta with mushroom gravy.  It was fine.  Nothing spectacular although it was filling.  My husband had the char-broiled portobello mushroom sandwich and commented  that it was good, though a little over-priced.

I feel guilty not writing a spectacular review!  It must be very difficult to run a completely vegan restaurant. I love the idea of Herbivore and will continue to support it.  Perhaps their best meal is brunch.  I'll have to return soon to find out.

An excellent vegan restaurant with a great atmosphere, wide selection of dishes, and friendly staff. My favorites are the soy chicken, roasted almonds, and corn on the cob.

I really wanted to like Herbivore. But I didn't. I started out with a coffee, which was maybe one of the worst cups of coffee I've ever had. Even lots of sugar and soy milk couldn't save it. After that it was strictly water.

I had high hopes for the marinated tofu sandwich, but the "marinade" is actually just soy sauce. It should probably be renamed the soy sauce soaked tofu sandwich. Perhaps that's a little unfair since the rest of the ingredients in the sandwich and the bread were good. I'm always on the lookout for a perfect tofu sandwich...I had one once, long ago, but the place closed and I've never had a tofu sandwich that good since. I  might worry that I've built that tofu sandwich up in my mind over the years, but I know others who've had it and remember it to be as amazing as I do. But I digress...

Service was slow and unimpressive. Why two stars you ask? He ordered the fake chicken shwarma and really enjoyed it so I must give credit where credit is due.
